Summary

Ring the tuning fork of lightning upon the protocystal in The Boyahda Tree. A path will open to the trial that awaits.

Description

First, a few notes about Avatar in general fights. This is not the Trial Size quest, which is the solo fight, capped at level 20 (refer to Trial Size Trial by Lightning for that quest). Everyone who is involved in the fight must have a tuning fork of the correct protocrystal. There is no cap on this battle, although there is a 30-minute time limit (not that it ever seems to be important).

General level guidelines: 60+ for melee and 55+ for mages. Youll want a Black Mage for certain and a solid tank, but the rest is relatively flexible. A well-balanced party is critical, though. Youll likely want at least 2 of the following 3: Red Mage, White Mage and Bard. You will want one of the melee or the Bard to be able to cast Bar-a spells. Having the WHM or BLM try to cast them will be problematic. Our strategy for this was to have the RDM sub WHM and melee using the appropriate En-spell for easy Bar-a casting. Additionally, if you can buy an Enhancing Torque (usually much cheaper than corresponding Torques), that will add 2-3 points of resistance to Bar-spells. Additionally Mal-rings (from the ghost NMs in Gusgen Mines) can be helpful for the fight. You can buff up before entering the protocrystal, so feel free to do so and rest up while still outside.

Battle strategy for all six fights is pretty much the same. The battlefield layout for all six fights is exactly the same, although the coloration scheme for the battlefield will be different. The battlefield is shaped like a long path up the side of hill, with a switchback about halfway to the top. This topographical feature allows the mages to stand above the fight (and out of easy reach of the avatar) while still being able to cast spells upon the combatants. This allows for the tank(s) to have extra time to pull hate back should the mages draw it. It is ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL to keep the correct Bar-spell up at all times. Not doing this will result in multiple deaths when the Avatars 2-hour comes (at about halfway), and will likely produce a loss. Each avatar is also only easily susceptible to debuffs of the element they are weak to (i.e. Shiva can be Paralyzed). Whether they are susceptible to other enfeebles of very high level is not confirmed.

It is strongly recommended to fight each avatar on the day it is weak to (i.e. Shiva on Firesday) and even more strongly recommended NOT to fight the avatar on its day (i.e. Shiva on Iceday). Spells of each element are much stronger on their specific day of the week.

Each quest is repeatable, but only once per real life day. Once you have returned to the quest giver and gotten your reward, you have to wait 24 hours (some say midnight Japanese time) in order to get the quest again. At that point, you can get a new tuning fork. Each time you complete the quest, you can choose ONE reward from the list, which varies from avatar to avatar.

In order to get the Fenrir quest (The Moonlit Path), you have to have whispers (key items) from all six elemental avatars. This means that you cant turn them in for reward until you have all six, at which point you can give them to the Fenrir quest giver (Leepe-Hoppe in Windurst Waters). So, in order to be able to get Fenrir and all six avatars, youll need to fight each of them at least twice. Additionally, if you are a Summoner, the Evokers Ring is only obtainable through the Mama Mia quest in Norg, which would mean you would have to fight them each a third time.

If you cant get any of these quests, the problem is likely fame. Each quest giver is a taru who stands next to a non-taru warrior. If you dont have sufficient fame, the taru will just complain about being hurt a lot while his companion will discuss perseverance and not giving up. If you have sufficient fame, the Tarutaru will give you the fork. The non-taru will give you a Trial Size Tuning Fork if you have met the requirements.

TRIAL BY LIGHTNING

To obtain the Lightning Avatar Ramuh, first speak of Ripapa in Mhaura. If you have sufficient fame, he will give you a tuning fork of wind (key item). Mhaura fame is closely tied to Windurst, with a good measure of Mhaura-based quests thrown in for good measure.

To use the fork, you need to travel to Boyahda Tree (SE corner of Sanctuary of Zitah) and find the Cloister of Storms. Once in Boyahda Tree, follow the path to the first fork, take a left. Take the next right and follow that until you come to a large room with a huge tree in the middle. From this point forward, youll need to put up Sneak and only Sneak. Travel northwest through the big room and through a second big room until you get to C-5 and head up the tunnel. You will go up another level and eventually come out at E-6 of another map you will be in another huge room. Head SE as much as possible until you see an immense waterfall. It should be noted that there is a little waterfall that heads down on the west wall of this room dont go down that, as that will take you somewhere else. Walk under the big waterfall and down the passageway behind it. You will zone into the Cloister of Storms.

Try to fight Ramuh on Earthday, and do not fight him on Lightningday. Keep up Barthundra at ALL times. Ramuh really likes to both Paralyze and Stun. Let your WHM know to have Paralyna and Erase ready. You might want to make sure the BLM and RDM sub Paralyna for this fight. Ramuh sometimes likes to follow up his AoE Paralyze and Stun effect with his Astral Flow, and if Barthundra fades at that point before your WHM can remove Paralyze, there will be complications. Having multiple people with Paralyna and Barthundra would be particularly useful for this fight.

Once you defeat him, you will acquire the Key Item: Lightning Whisper. Return it to Ripapa for your reward, or hold onto it. If you have all six whispers simultaneously, you can give them to Leepe-Hoppe in Windurst Waters to gain the Moon Bauble which is basically the Tuning Fork of the Moon the ability to fight Fenrir. If you are collecting items for the Evokers Ring, you will want the Elder Branch.

Fighting Ramuh [RDM/NIN solo]
# Nov 04 2008 at 7:09 AM Rating: Decent
What you need:
Warlock's Chapeau
Jack-o-lantern (+10 Acc, +10 Eva, +10 Racc, -10 CHR)
Sword (almost any will do)
Shield (Reccomend Genbu's Shield or Tariqah(+4 Acc, +4 Eva))
Scorpion Harness or Narashima's Vest

Spells you will use:
Phalanx I/II
Stoneskin
Protect IV
Shell IV
Utsusemi: Ichi
Utsusemi: Ni
Barthunder
Barparalyze
Enstone (not necessary)
Slow I/II
Bio II/III (not necessary)
Haste
Refresh

To start I want to mention that because each avatar has an elemental attribute and weakness they can be and very much are sucesptible certain enfeebling magic. Ramuh being of the thunder element (which is weak to earth) Ramuh himself is sucesptible to Slow, which is of the earth element.

In order to succeed at this fight you will want to pay very careful attention to when your buffs (most importantly shadows) go down and how much damage your Stoneskin is taking. Try to keep all your buffs up at all times. The tricky thing is to recast Stoneskin even if it hasnt gone down yet. If you take two or more hits to your stoneskin, the very next time you put up a fresh set of Utsusemi shadows, recast your Stoneskin by manually dropping it. This is important because if it gets too weak and Ramuh decides its time to use Judgement Bolt you can be in for some trouble.

The only weaponskill you really need to use here is Spirits Within or Savage Blade if you have it. If you'll notice all the gear/food I reccomend are for Evasion+, having capped evasion helps but avatar's have pretty terrible accuracy at any rate but they do hit hard.

Around -40% if you need to convert do so but make sure your shadows and stoneskin are fresh. Thunder IV ignores shadows which is why Barthunder and Phalanx are important though I would like to note its more than possible to do this fight without Phalanx, Enstone, Slow, Barthunder or Barparalyze.

All in all fight will take about 20+ minutes. Good luck.

u can only get ramhu if u have max out fame. i got him at lvl 2 for smn and i use my 61whm/22 blm with my friend Fongshu and he was a 75nin/37drg and we duo all of them. it was easy all u have to do is stand back keep bar spell up, haste him/her, and make sure u bring alot of juices for refresh. i also got grauda with a 75pld/37war (Coltengrundy) and a 75rdm/37nin (Stephenjd). in order to get them u must have max out fame after that ur all set. just remember do not use thunderspark in the dunnes or anywhere unless u want to get ur whole pt killed. good luck and have fun =^,^= MEOW!!!!!!!!!!

Just want to point out two things:

First you dont need MAX fame you just need Fame 4 in Windurst to get the Mini (Lv20 Solo fight) and Fame 6 to get this Prime fight.

As for Thunderspark, something most dont know you can by all means use thunderspark in party. Even if it hits other mobs if you dismiss Ramuh right away the mobs will not come after you or any other party members. I've done this repeatedly in Yhotar Jungle around lizsy's and in Crawlers Nest around lizzy's. May just be my luck, dont have to take my words for it but i know what i saw cuz thunderspark does some amazing damage ^_-

My fame in Windy is 9, my rank is 8 (yes I know it has nothing to do with getting forks), and I tried talking to the npc with my SMN (which is only at 7), and my RDM (which is 75) to get the Prime fork for Ramuh and he just babbles about being hurt.... wth can't I get this damned fork?

Ramuh solo'd
# Dec 18 2006 at 1:56 AM Rating: Decent
I solo'd Ramuh last night as a lvl 71 Summoner.
The fight took around 20 to 25 minutes but was pretty easy.
The key is to carby kite until he is around 50% and then finishing up with Titan and nuking with stone IV.

When I began to nuke I used astral flow to keep my mp up.
I did have my rdm friend (as she needed ramuh) to keep me refreshed so it was a partial duo, only as a walking yagudo drink though.
It is possible to solo on summon as a lvl 70+ summoner. With the exception of Garuda and leviathan as they can heal themselves.

The only problem is beating them in the aloted time.
30 mins can be too little and you run out of time.
But it can be done easily.

So.
Go kill an avatar for Jesus.

Who wrote that you need a full party of 75 or so..??
A friend and I decided that we would do an avatar cos we were bored. We picked up Ramuh. Was about to make a party to go beat him up but she said that we could duo it. Then we go in, she as 74 RDM/WAR and me as 65 BST/WHM. Went down to 20% i think. Not enough mp, she dies, pet dies...and i die.
We don't let down, we go back in as <she> RDM/WAR 73 (yeah. + a level down...) and <me> 65 BLM/WHM. Too easy. TOO EASY. A peace of cake. Ok i had to use manafont but it went great. Spam stone, stone II, stone III, stonega I and III, bio II.
Really, you don't need a full pt of 75..... ;)

fame and battle
# Nov 01 2005 at 8:50 AM Rating: Decent
min windurst rank to get this prime fight is lvl 6 windy fame. I tired to get the forks (khazam and mhuara) every time I raised my fame a lvl, all in all I traded ~150 cornettes (forgive the approximation as I had a mule in bastok that I'd load up and then transfer all to main in windy.

But lvl 6 was the key. Shouted in Jeuno to get a pt together and salvage the night after xp broke at 2k tnl /cry. Anyway picked up 65 smn, 68 blm, (me) 69 thf, 74 blm, 75 whm, 75 pld. We came, we saw, we conquered (4min 13s). All I can say is I have new found respect for Blm's, they kept their composure on the roast and toast, pld only lost hate once during the fight when a couple aga 3's came out, but a quick SATA SB put it back in place, and it died before melee could bring it back to the top ramp area. We went in on ice day.
This fight went much smoother than my Shiva Prime fight, I just hope ifrit and leviathan go as smoothly.
and then there was 4

well heres what happened. ill say to start it that we did win (in 18 minutes) but u'll find out.
we started out with me as 50mnk/25war, 51whm/20blm, 75whm/37blm, 60whm/30blm, 75rdm/20-37nin and i think a pld or war.
well me the 2 higher leveled whms and the rdm had fame to do quest prob was other 2 dident so we left them in windy to work on there fame when we got to the lightning protocrystal we went in me and the lower leveled whm waited 4 ramuh to 2 hour then we go in and fight i used powered up chi blasts and did bout 200 damage while we waited.
well after it 2 houred i 2 houred and attacked it well i did bout 1k damage to it with my 2 hour and it died eventally. to my surprise i killed it with chi blast ^^ so i got ramuh

thx to my friends kool and pina for killing it

I've been battling the lvl 20 Titan Ramuh and Shiva for almost 3 mounths now (yes i really suck) mostly i do them once every 2 weeks, or whenever i'm bored. I got to 60whm and got Garuda with party. My problem is that when i try to pick up the key item forks for Titan, Ramuh and Shiva's 60 prime fights, the little taru dudes ignore me.
Questions:
~Once you pick up the lvl 20 mini forks, are you unable to collect the lvl 60 key item fork?
~Is there a way to trade in the mini forks for the key item forks?
~Do the lvl 60 prime fights need more fame then the lvl 20?
Here's the stupid question:
~Are you allowed into the lvl 60 prime battle field without the key item?

No. Well, not as a group, but I have heard of level 20 summoners entering the battlefield solo by not trading their tuning fork first, so you might be enter solo, but not as part of a party.

Quote:

No. Given enough fame, you should be able to have both of them, I believe. From what I understand, the guy standing next to the Rhinostery taru will give you the mini-fork and the taru will give you the full fledged tuning fork. I have never done the mini-quests, so I can't attest personally, but this is what I have been told by relatively reliable sources.

~Do the lvl 60 prime fights need more fame then the lvl 20?

Yes. A lot more. This is almost assuredly the issue here. More fame is probably needed.

Just putting this out there; not to toot my own horn, but I was taught a highly effective method of defeating the mini-fork battles at level 20 by a wonderful high-level summoner, Rydiablossom. If anyone on Caitsith is having trouble with the level 20 avatars, feel free to /tell Randir, I would love to help you out. I know how frustrating it can be; I wasted so much gil on fighting Shiva before I finally turned to Rydia for help. >.<

1/1 Titan; 1/1 Garuda; 1/5 Shiva (ouch); 1/1 Ifrit (beat previous record); 1/1 Leviathan; 1/4 Ramuh (beat previous record)

Nope after the first fight the only prize for beating a trial-sized battle is a scroll of instant warp and the fun of the fight. Consiquently if you can make it back from the cloisters with your smn it is a good way to get a free scroll (works best if your alc lv is high enough to make ethers).

RE: Having an issue
# May 04 2005 at 9:33 PM Rating: Decent
I want to start by saying that I'm not lv 50 yet so I can't start the AF3 quest......

That being said you might want to cheack your fame lv. Many people I talked to said that if your fame is high enough and you are 50 or higher you will get the AF quest then if you talk to them you will get the fork. This is what happened with me and my AF1 (Bastokian Smn with lv 9 fame) so that would make sence. This is all so what happens with Leepy-Hoppy and the Fenrir quest (tuning in/out>>>Moonlite Path). By the sounds of it your fame is lacking for the second quest and our stuck with just the Carbuncle Debacle(sp?). Hope this solves the problem...

You can't obtain Thunder Spirit Pact like this.. From what I understand, it may only be obtained via a BCNM 20 fight. And if you think by "Lighting pact" they mean the actual summon itself (i.e. Ramuh), look at the last item on the list...

You can get spirit pacts also by defeating the elemental of the spirit with an avatar. This includes getting the elemental down to low health by other means, then finishing it with the avatar.

you only get one...most people obviously get the avatar first then the gill if nothing else is needed, i suggest when you get close to 70 you go and do all the fights again and get the quest items so you can get the evokers ring ;P
