Summary

Trade an Oztroja Coffer Key to a treasure coffer in Castle Oztroja to receive your Warlock's Tabard.

Description

You must have completed The Crimson Trial - RDM AF1 and activated Borghertz's Vermillion Hands to start this quest.

Head to Castle Oztroja and obtain a coffer key by killing yagudos on the top floor. Mobs that drop coffers include the Yagudo Assassin, Yagudo Flagellant, Yagudo Prelate and Yagudo Conductor.

Once you have the key you will need to find the treasure coffer. The coffer can spawn in five places in the corridor leading up to the top floor, at I-10, H-9, G-8, F-9 and F-8. On the top floor, the coffer can spawn at four points at H-9, H-8, G-7 and H-7.

Trade your key to the treasure coffer to receive your Warlock's Tabard. You will only receive your item if you open the coffer as red mage.

Quest Series

This quest is part of the Red Mage artifact armor series. See the list below to find out which quest comes next.

Oh man this was a pain yesterday, a 72BST/WHM helped me with my search of Castle Oztroja for my AF Tabard. So this old 60RDM/30BLM headed out there with the big bad wolf 72BST, his courier Carrie and his awesome 65NPC. needless to say the killing for him was no problem but i managed to die enough times to delevel down to 59. but we fought for over 2 hours with no drop, we had done
Garliage Citadel Coffer just a couple weeks before for my Gloves. Well anyways when i deleveled i started looking for some help for us. Found 75THF/NIN who came up and helped for.....oh I'll say 15 minutes later the key dropped along with many scrolls, testimony's and the judgement key.

So moral of the story is, pay a 75THF to come with you and anything is possible. Lol
correction please.. or what did i miss?

Tip on getting any coffer keys fast
# Feb 28 2007 at 3:46 AM Rating: Decent
Here is a tip on getting a coffer key: have a thf use thf tool on the coffer chest. 50/50 that thf will spawn a monster chest and it is a 99.9% drop rate. I did this trick on helping LS members getting their coffer keys within afew minutes(more like within 1 minute since some of the LS is lvl 7x on other job).

If you don't want hours of killing mob then use this tip and you will see it is FASTEST way.

Did this tonight with this lineup:
RDM59/BLM29(ME)
DRK75/??
BLM??/WHM
THF/??
PLD67/WAR

got to top pretty smoothly. otw to top found the coffer chest but no key. started fighting the yags, got lots of nice drops(brd test, blm test, nin test etc...) then about 20mins into fighting key dropped. by this point i was low on mp and yags everywhere, i had enough mp for 1 invis, the chest was in same spot it was in so i ran down there, and right in the leech room, invis started wearing with no mp!couldve converted but was like **** it alomst to chest.i ran around the corner and saw the chest, i was about 10 feet away from chest and invis wore. agroed 5 yags, got to chest, had trouble trading the key bcause my heart was pounding so hard. finally got chest open, got RDM AF body. and died 10 secs later with 45 exp to spear b4 d-lvl. lol. close call. all in all it took 30mins to do this. very easy.

well, just in case someone else is looking up for this info:

>> talk to the guy inside lower jeuno magic shop and trade him 10k so he can erase you memory from the AF quests youv'e done

>> from this point forward follow the normal guides for AF, but remember that, you cannot obtain a AF piece that you still hold on you, so, drop the AF piece you have before getting the new one (wich will be the exact same one).

you don't have to upgrade all the AF to get and do these quests.. tho some guides say you do, you just have to drop the ones you didn't upgrade so you can re-gain all the pieces.

Just got this last night with some Linkshell friends. I had hunted the key for a total of about 3.5 hours before I got it. Found the coffer and got my Tabard. /cheer

Funny Story: Once I got the key I was extatic (sp?). Then my internet went out and when I logged back in, I was being attacked by a Yag and had to Chainspell + Escape out, ha. Came back in and found the coffer.

Did this last night with 74thf/37nin 54whm/27blm, 62blm/31whm and 50rdm/25blm (me). Thf tanked the mobs and we buffed cured meleed etc. and got skill-ups as well. Key dropped within 30 min or so. We were also looking for Blm scroll but thf died trying to solo a Blm yagudo >.< Thanks Neolyn for your help. I'm on Shiva if anyone wants help to get their key.

Shouted in jeuno, in about 20 mins got a full pt of about 65-70 who wanted just skill ups.

After about 10 or 15 yags, it dropped, total time about 30 mins of killing. The coffer was right down the stairs and 1 or 2 turns, easy.

Yeah right! Had a great party set up, even found a THF in Oz that didnt mind helping, all the kills where quick and no other pts to compete with....5 hours later no drop. Decided to ask LS how bad this key drop has been lately. Last RDM in my LS that tried this had to come to Oz for 3 days straight before 1 key even droped. Lame as hell when you consider on any given day I can go to Garalage Citadel and get about 5 key drops in under an hour. Not sure if this is just an issue with my server or not. But I did notice for the first time the drap rate started to suck when SE screwed with the coffers and took the astral rings away from it.

The up's and down's of Rare/Ex items.
# Nov 20 2005 at 7:57 PM Rating: Decent
When it comes to Rare/Ex items needed to advance the game, some people get them easilly, with little to no stress. While some other people endure hours of frustration and dissapointment. I endured about 5 hours of coffer key hunting in Castle O before my pt got wiped out. Not to mention to hours of countless shouting in Jeuno, and asking friends and ls mates for help.

This was the party set-up:

Rdm/Blm 57(me)
Smn/Whm 64
Thf/Nin 64
War/Nin 57

We started with this set up, which after about an hour of slow kills became this set-up:

Rdm/Blm 57(me)
Smn/Whm 64
Thf/Nin 64
War/Nin 57
Thf/Nin 62
Brd/Whm 69
Nin/War 74

OMG what a set-up eh? High level ninja tank, two TH2's, a Bard, plenty of healing, and plenty of damage. With this set-up we cleaned house and we're actually waiting for spawns. And I was the only one in need of a key, and there was a coffer staring us in the face the whole time. In short, picture perfrect scenario. Except the lacking coffer key.

This picture perfect scenario only added to the frustration of the key not dropping. And I think all the kills ended up turning against us. Because we killed so quickly, and switched from camping to wandering. We found ourselves surrounded by about four pissed off Yagudo that were fresh spawns, who proceeded to off us one after the other.

I'm not here to complain. I was pissed off afterwards yes, but I have come to terms in this game. Those terms are that some nights, the rare/ex item your after is just not going to fall into your gobbiebag. I honestly believe we could've stayed another three hours, and still got no drop.

I know there are people who have spent way more than five hours without a drop. My point of why this sucked so bad is because of the rarity of scenario that I was so blessed with. But I know in the back of my head, I just have to suck it up and go back to Castle O. Almost the same thing happened to me during G1 with the papyrus. Endless hours of killing with no drop. Then on a later night I ended up getting it after 5 or 6 kills.

Hopefully I have little better luck next time around.

Peace, and happy coffer hunting to those needing this.

Edit: Finally got it! And opened coffer same night. I went 2 more times after my OP. Second time spent 2 hours, no drop. Third and final time spent 4 hours, and two keys dropped back to back towards the end of the night.

The other rdm in my party/alliance offered me 100k to just let him have the coffer. I turned it down and said lets /random. I rolled higher, then he upped his offer to 400k lol. I still turned it down, I even went 2 out of 3 with him and still won. I just think it was finally my night to obtain this AF. And now way, no how, is 400k worth 11 hours of frustration.

Cheers.

This was BY FAR the easiest AF coffer/quest I've done yet. I got it by pure luck. I was farming in Rolanberry Fields when a SMN proposed a deal to me. I help his party get their testimonies and in exchange they will help me get my AF (Castle Oztroja)key AND coffer. I felt that this was an awesome proposition so I accepted. Took the KFC express out to Castle Oztroja and we got their testimonies in about 15 minutes. While we were fighting off the demonic versions of Big-Bird the coffer popped in the room behind me. It took about an HOUR for the key to drop -_-;; but no one was coffer hunting, so it was still there when I finally got it!! Got the key, walked through the doors, took a screen shot of me cheering the coffer on, a little trading with the coffer and BAM! Warlock's Tabard! Now all I need is Warlock's Tights and Warlock's Hat! That and lvl 58...

Did this today with an alliance of 8.

70 Mnk/War
70 Blm/Whm
70 Thf/Nin
65 Blm/Smn
65 Drk/Nin
65 Thf/Nin
60 War/Mnk
58 Rdm/Blm <-- me

Before all of us even made it to the 4th floor, one of the Thfs got aggro and linked 5 Yags. A rather bad mistake that killed us all, but luckily there was a 75 WHM in the area to Raise III us all. After we regrouped, the fighting began. We fought nearly 100 Yags over the course of 4hrs, getting everything but the Coffer Key, including over 1.5k exp from only 8-15 a battle. Since the drops were nice (tons of Testimonys, a bunch of NIN & BRD scrolls, and some BLM scrolls as well), everyone stuck around for the entire thing. Skill Up was nice and each battle was only about 1-2 min, but after the first 2.5hrs, it became very bothersome. Needless to say, I finally got the stupid key and found my Coffer in one of the Torch rooms on the same floor. It was guarded by 2 Yags, and I had to stand there for nearly 15min waiting for them to turn their backs to me. I quickly dropped Invis, opened the Coffer, and Warped out just as I got hit with Thunder III. One would think having Treasure Hunter 2 x2 that the key would drop relatively easy, but this certainly was not the case. Now I just need 1.5 lvls until I have to try and get the hat, and I'm not much looking forward to that either.

I completely disagree and am totally bummed Astral Rings arent obtainable from these coffers anymore. Yes getting RDM AF in Castle Oztroja was a royal pain and took a couple days. However, the price of Astral Rings has now shot into the stratosphere ; ;. I'd rather be able to buy Astral Rings at a reasonable price and have to camp coffer for awhile for the RDM AF. I suppose it all depends on how healthy your pocket book is and it is nice that the upcoming RDM's will have an easier time with AF.
Hallelujah!!!

WOOTers,,,, just got this yesterday in that dang castle!!!!!

And man it is nice^^

here's my story on it:
It was actually really easy due to some of the posts here saying that a party 55-60 could get some decent exp, I decided to do just that. Got a PT together 57-59 and decided to head there. The hardest part was lighting the torch. I had everyone wait by the door while I went to a room that seemed to have less yags. that room for me proved to be the southwest torchroom. Three yags in there, waited till they were looking away and dropped sneak, targeted the torch selected it then me to recast sneak, as I did that though I realized that there is a widow that comes up and asks if I want to light the torch....crap. So i stop casting real quick and hit the torch again, as I do all three of the yags start to turn towards me...eep. I select "yes" real quick and start to cast,,,,thank heaven for quickcast trait, got it on before they could see me and the rest of the pt was in camp. Now for the best part.

While we were resting up and getting ready the PLD stated, wait a sec these are only conning VT to me, are we even gonna get any exp here.....
I said yea we will get exp how much I dont know but we will. Needless to say he was upset that we were there and not in the Valley of Sorrows(understandabley so).

We are all healed up now and ready for our first yag, a conductor......owned him no prob...and a >>>>KEY<<<< drops. WOOT, problem though, the DRK in the party needs it...shoot...so we lot.....
My lot>>>335~~~eew
DRKs lot>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>13~~~whew
WOOT I get the key, oh and another thing the Coffer was right there behind the code statue..woot.

This Red Mage has a new piece of armor^^.

After I got it they were all excited for me and I told em I used to get me the key, apologized, they laughed and congratulated me, WHM ported us to Altep and we commenced lvling in Valley of Sorrows.

All in all it was fun. Can't wait to get me Pimp Hat now^^.

So if any of yall RDM out there need help getting ur tabbard and are on Titan hit me up, I'll help ya!!
OOO its' mine!!!!

Syn. your the lowest I ever see or encounter... Tricking the exp party is the worst. I hope they added you to their blacklist. We all doing AF quest but there is no need to lie or tricking people like that. If you need the coffer key, do like everyone else. Stay in Jeuno and shout for help.

Shame on you that is all I got to say.

I've been to Castle Oztroja on 6 trips since I hit lv 52. Time ranges from 1 hr to 3 hrs each time. AND GUESS WHAT ?? the 12++ hour of killing... only 3 keys, and guess who got the keys? 2 BRDs and 1 other RDM... this drop rate is pathetic!! God dammit! I don't have enough time to play this darn game as it is, and wasting them all on this damn key... ARGH!!! I just want my AF Body... /cry. sick of shouting and begging people to help or skill up... I can only take so much of it...

*update* Got it on my 8th trip!! w00t!! was shouting for like ever, had a 75 ELV BLM who was nice enough to help since he was gonna skill up Staff. Big ups to Onimenokyo!! 1st it was just 2 of us and I suggest we duo the mobs. He was reluctant but said yes anyway. Did a /sea oztroja b4 heading out and found a 62 THF there alone so I send him a tell asking if he would help. To my surprise, he said yes without any hesitation. Thanx Goldfish!! Then we debated that we don't have enough DD or a tank, so I shouted for a {meat} {shield} for 50k. A 72 DRK responded, he brought along a 67 MNK for free. Bouncerz and Ahirusanto you guys rock! When we got to Castle Oztroja, the MNK ran into a THF friend there who was /anon and he said he'd tag along for the fun too. I forgot his name but he rocks too! Man, I can't believe how lucky I was. After about 10 kills the Key finally dropped and I was 1 happy RDM with no one to compete for lot! We continued fighting for about 30 mins after that but got a bad train of about 4 Yags. BLM escaped but the MNK got left behind. ; ; luckily he had a warp scroll and managed to escape. Thanks again guys!

Warlock's Tabard

109 posts
Prerequisites:
You must complete RDM AF1-1 and have started RDM AF1-4 to open this coffer and successfully receive a Warlock's Tabard.

Objective:
Obtain a Castle Oztroja coffer key and locate a Castle Oztroja coffer chest.

Targeted Mobs:
Yagudo Assassin [NIN64-72]
Yagudo Conductor [BRD63-67]
Yagudo Flagellant [MNK62-66]
Yagudo Prelate [BLM65-69]

Notes:
Yagudos aggro by sight, so Invisible (spell) and/or Prism powders is recommended. Like other beastmen, Yagudos also aggro to healing, so try not to rest near them. Leeches here aggro to sound if your level is low enough, however they only appear in certain spots. Casting Invisible on yourself while Invisible is still on will overwrite the previous Invisible spell, thus allowing you to keep a continuous Invisible effect on yourself without being detected (as long as your MP allows for it).

Suggested Party:
A full, balanced party of Lv55-60 can kill these mobs and earn decent experience points at the same time. Yagudo Assassins will be the hardest to kill because of being a NIN-type mob, using Utsusemi:Ni (also making it more difficult to sleep if it links) and generally being a higher level than the other mobs.

Finding Camp:
You can use this map as a reference for the following directions. On Map#1, head to the Bronze Door at (I-8). Depending on which of the 2 levers you turn, you will either open the door or trigger a trap door (if you fall down, you'll be on Map#7 and will have to follow the path back up to (I-10) on Map#1 and return to (I-8)).

After proceeding through the Brass door, you'll be on Map#2 at (J-8). Proceed to the next Bronze Gate at (G-8) with the four levers. There are typically a Yagudo Lutenist [BRD44-49] and a Yagudo Zealot [MNK42-49] guarding this gate (both con Easy Prey to Lv58). The 4-lever handle is used to open this Brass Door. You will need to toggle to levers correctly in a combination that will open the door. The correct combination changes each Vana'diel day, so you can either accomplish this by trial-and-error, or by going to (I-10) through an unmarked door to view the correct sequence on the wall.

Beyond this point, you will be met by Yagudo Abbots [WHM53-59], Yagudo Chanters [BRD50-57], Yagudo Inquisitors [BST50-58], and Yagudo Sentinels [MNK50-56]. You can either fight your way through the 10-12 spawn points, or just Invisible yourself/the party through this area. Follow the path onto Map#3 (you have no choice but to go straight here) at (F-9). You'll pass a room with a pond in the center at (H-9). Avoid walking near/on the leeches (they aggro to sound) in this room and continue forward to (H-11). This will take you to Map#4 at (H-9).

Your targeted mobs can all be located on this map. The safest camp is behind the Brass door at (H-7). To enter this room, you need to light any one of the four torches located on this floor at (G-7), (G-8), (H-7), (H-8) and it will open the Brass door. Once inside, you can use the lever to open the door from the inside so the puller can come in.

If this camp is taken, another manageable camp is near the stairway between (H-8) and (H-9). If this camp is also taken, you can try going through the Brass door room. Once inside, enter the 3 correct codes and you'll be dropped into the area where you can do GK3 for the Yagudo crest. Coffer mobs are also located here.

Finding the Coffer:
After obtaining a Castle Oztroja coffer key, it's time to locate the coffer chest. Fortunately, the coffer only spawns in 9 spots all relatively close to one another on Map#3 and Map#4.
http://www.speakeasy.org/~sticks/ffxi/treasure/Fr_Castle_Oztroja.html

In addition, after one of the more recent updates, the contents inside the Castle Oztroja coffer have been altered. In Lamen's terms, Astral rings are no longer found in these chests, so the competition to find chests here has dramatically dropped since. Finding a coffer spawn shouldn't take too long as long as you keep Invisible up.

Comments:
A PLD66/WAR33, RDM72/BLM36 and THF66/RNG33 can easily kill each of these mobs without any difficulty. You can skill up on these mobs till @200 skill with your weapon. These mobs con Decent Challenge, Even Match and Tough to a Lv66 player. These mobs also drop items such as a Ninja's Testimony, Scroll of Tornado, Scroll of Aero III, Scroll of Goddess Hymnus, Scroll of Warding Round and other goodies. Gold beastcoins can also be stolen from these mobs by THFs.

Happy hunting!

Edit: Fixed some grammatical/spelling mistakes.

whats the difference between a coffer chest and a treasure chest?
RE: Question about coffers

You can think of a coffer as a "higher level" chest. Coffer keys are generally harder to get than Chest keys. For THFs, a Coffer is much more likely to go mimic or be trapped than a chest in the same zone. Coffers also typically contain "better" prizes than Chests in the same zone and are usually harder to get to and/or surrounded by higher level monsters.

In terms of AF, there's a big difference. You won't get yur AF from a chest if that's what you're thinking.

I read in the new update:
"The contents of the treasure coffers in Castle Oztroja have been changed. Accordingly certain items will now be obtainable through different methods."

Hopefully it will remove some coffer campers.

The Astral Rings that used to be obtained soley from this coffer were moved to a Burning Circle battle.

Since then, Castle Oztroja has become barren in terms of people trying to make quick cash. While farming a key for a buddy, we found his coffer in about 20 mins (roughly the spawn time). So basically, this coffer is now as hard as any other coffer. You just gotta compete with other people doing AF and few THFs that are popping open coffers for gil (which not many do, since there are faster ways to make gil as a THF).

Man I wish that update had been applied before I had to spend a month (casually) trying to beat the campers for my THF AF.
