Summary

Gauntlets wrought by Borghertz, the legendary craftsman, lie hidden somewhere in Vana'diel.

Walkthrough

Note: You must have completed Messenger from Beyond - WHM AF1 and activated Prelude of White & Black - WHM AF2 to obtain this quest.

To start this quest, first speak with Guslam at H-8 of Upper Jeuno. The galka will tell you about a pair of old gauntlets seen in Beadeaux that might have once belonged to the legendary Borghertz.

Go to Beadeaux and obtain a Beadeaux Coffer Key. The following monsters drop coffer keys: Darksteel Quadav, Ancient Quadav, Platinum Quadav, and Sapphire Quadav.

Next, find a coffer. All eight spawn points where coffers can appear are located on the second map. The spawn points are at (K-7)(note: there are two possible spawn points at these co-ordinates), (K-8), (L-6), (M-6), (M-7)(note: there are two possible spawn points at these co-ordinates), (N-7). Trade your key to the coffer to receive the key item Old Gauntlets. You do not have to be a white mage when you open this coffer.

After receiving the old gauntlets, return to Guslam, who says the gauntlets are the work of Borghertz -- but that he cannot repair them. Head down to the Tenshodo shop in Lower Jeuno, where Yin Pocanakhu talks about a toolbox that won't open. Pay her 1,000 gil, and she says the toolbox is on top of a crate in Port Jeuno, in the auction house area. Find the toolbox and examine it, and the ghost of Borghertz appears. He asks you to bring him some shadow flames from Castle Zvahl.

Return to Castle Zvahl Baileys and examine the torch at F-8. A notorious monster bomb by name of Dark Spark will appear. Defeat Darkspark and examine the torch again to get the key item Shadow Flames.

Once you have the flames, return to Jeuno and examine the toolbox again. The ghost of Borghertz reappears, and he uses the flames to repair the old gauntlets. He then gives you your Healer's Mitts.

Jadefox was helping me out with LB3 and we passed the coffer. She decided that we'd kill 5 coffer mobs just for the hell of it, and sure enough, on the 5th mob, the key dropped. My best coffer experience yet.

I (finally) plucked up the courage to go do this coffer yesterday... 62whm/31blm (escape is rather useful in places like this ^^;) Me and my BST ls buddy (level 65) both needed the key and have been meaning to get it for some weeks, but I've been daunted by the horror stories of bad-*** drop rates. Anywho, shouted for help, soon had a 71pld, 71nin, and two 60+ thfs, not entirely sure of their levels (sorry guys!) Anyway, headed off to Beadeaux, found a camp (small corridoor at K-7 on the second map) and began pulling Quadavs. Key dropped on... 5th kill maybe? BST let me have the first key (/hug) and then we continued to kill for maybe half an hour longer before his key dropped too. Got the coffer no probs, although BST died openeing his because I got DC ;_; He helped me open mine though, chucked a crab at one quadav, another linked on to it, and he /fight the one that aggroed me when I popped the coffer. (Blink)+(Stoneskin)+(Escape) <3. All in all, not a bad expereince, and I love my gloves^^ Thanks to all who helped, and especially Bob ^_^

pretty sure you can get the old gauntlets from anywhere (job specific) with anyjob. so you could get the old gauntlets from eld as rdm or from beadeax as whm and then change jobs to complete the quest. just be sure to be the correct job for the quest when opening the coffer in the desired area.

That's not true, this story happen to me today, because i misread quest name in quest list ><

My GF playing as WHM before and received WHM AF Gloves quest, but hasnt do it yet, and later I playing her character as RDM until 52, so I go talk to Guslam to received RDM AF Gloves quest, and after talk to Guslam, I thought already got the quest, because there is "Borghertz's XXXX Hands" quest in quest list (WHM one is Borghertz's Healing Hands, RDM one is Borghertz's Vermillion Hands ><) then go to Eldieme Necropolis with some friends and got the key, yay ^^ and began coffer hunting for 2 hour more, even try to go to Beaucedine Glacier side to check it and still couldnt find it, and finally found it in center of Eldieme Necropolis.
And when open the coffer as RDM, got 6000+ gil instead of key item. Thus, just realize made a mistake lol >< I must find new key. Later that day, go with other friends to Beadeaux to hunt for key, take 3 hour more for key drop, and coffer near there, open it as WHM, and got "Old gauntlet" key item, yay ^^.

So if u already has that quest in your quest list, u must finish it before u can receive a new one from Guslam.

Below is my theory, dont sure if correct or not, please make correction if u know it:
And if u think can go get RDM AF gloves after open coffer key and get key item as WHM, then u cant, I guess because Guslam will give u thing based on quest on your quest list

sorry for spell error and grammar error, my first post, Thanks ^^

took me two trips of 4-5 hours each to get one key drop. Both times there was a 70+ thf with us and thf subs on darks and what not.

Amazing how long it takes to get one measly key, WITH th2 the drop rate is horrible.

I might add the second trip was on 98% full moon on and we started on lightsday.

last night, i spent 1.5 hrs here. In this time, we got 3 warrior testimony's, 3 black mage testimonys and 3 beadeaux coffer key. I came here worried about taking 7 hours for a key but it turned out it didnt take long. We had 70PLD, 71 THF, 62 BLM and me, 60whm. Maybe it was the TH2, i dunno.
Coffer Locations?

Just for reference if yall are lost in finding the Beadeaux coffer locations just go to the 2nd map of this link and see all the coffer locations. A competent party should be able to get to these spots to use your/their key once yall are able to get one.

Hope that helps!

This site is great for coffers and chests as well. It's in english which helps out some ^.^

The link goes to the Beadeaux map section. Click "Coffer Map" at the bottom to pull it up. Also has what chests and coffers can give if you open them without quests for the contents. Also gives the mobs that drop the keys too ^.^

This key..is complete, total, and utter hell..makes the papyrus seem like a stroll through the park. We spent -7- straight hours in here pulling Quadavs nonstop - sometimes even 2 at a time trying to get 3 keys for our alliance. We had anywhere from 8 to even 12 people at times helping out, ranging from 57-68. We got two keys to drop in the 7 hours we were there before giving up. It took around 3 hours for us to even get the first key.. be prepared for a long, long night. The more people you can bring, the better.

On the bright side, once you do get the key, the coffer is very easy to get to..none of the Eldieme Necropolis style maze crawls. We opened 2 while we were there, though if you don't have a party, you may wanna bring a scroll of insta warp and have it macroed to use as soon as you open the chest.

Another thing that may sway people into coming along to help you out..the drops off these mobs are VERY valuble. I don't think a single person walked away with under 15k in loot, and one of our DRK/THFs must have made at least 250k easily. Our thieves were getting rich stealing gold beastcoins off the mobs.. they easily each walked away with a stack and a half of them, currently going for 75k a stack and 6k individually - you'll also get tons of these as normal drops off the quadavs. We also ended up with about 8 scrolls of Water III (7k each), a scroll of Flood (30k), and most importantly, a scroll of Water IV (190k!) - not to mention these things bleed black mage, warrior, and paladin testimonies if anyone is in need of those.

Actually, this was not that bad for me.

My static went hunting AF last night. PLD, DRK, SAM, BLM, RDM, WHM all at leveal 58. We needed 2 Eldieme Necrolpolis coffer keys which were not as bad as everyone says. We camped on the hill in the tunnel past the Humer Bones and pulled Tomb Warriors, Mages, and Spriggans. Got 2 keys drop in under 2 hours.

Then we moved on to Beadeaux where we needed 2 keys, one for me (WHM) and one for the PLD. We made our way to the area where the Quads that we needed spawn and cleared the area of the lower level Quads (Topaz, Gold, etc) and the Larva since we found out that they aggro when healing. We camped at the bottom of the 1st tunnel near the room where the Afflictor is and pulled from that room and the big room to the south.

A couple of times we caught links from pops but they were the weaker Quads and we were never in any real trouble. We actually got 3 keys in about 3 hours. The reason for 3 is that our SAM accidently lotted on the 2nd key (which should have been mine) so we had to get another.

These Quads were surprisingly easy and the drop rate for us was not too bad. The great thing about the camp we chose is that Coffers spawn in either of the 1st 2 big rooms you come to so we got the keys and our coffers before we left.

Now we just have to kill Dark Spark for the 2nd time, but that wont be to bad either... we owned him at Lv56.

I think that part of the difference is having a static PT to do all these AF with. That way you dont worry about people leaving after they get there key or something else coming up. They are there to help you because they know you will be there to help them.

This key is easy to get...I was in a skillup party leveling divine magic and club skill with a 63whm/31smn a 73drk/36thf and a 55blm/27whm and me, 50whm/25blm having deleveled from dying 5 times from failed bcnm 'cause of an idiot brd. we weren't even looking for keys and one drops, I ask what job need it and they tell me whm so I lot, win, yay! a couple more quads yay, another key! the blm lots even though she has a level 65ish thf >.< just to annoy me (She did it to a chest key too) Lucky pt I guess. It started out as a papyrus pt for a rdm in our group, got that in 3 lich kills, needed my yagudo holy water, got that first yagudo abbot kill :) I rawk

Ok I am in a static party and we have been opening coffers and getting keys for the past week. The pld, rng, and blm have their key item gaunlets. Now they want to go kill dark spark. The problem I have is that if I go with them can I get the flames without having the key item? This would be very helpful casue I heard my next coffer is hard. >< Please answer my question and if it has already been answered just ignore me. =D

Here's a cautionary tale:

We took a small (8-ish) alliance to Zvhal Castle for the Dark Spark fight. Not everyone had their key item, and were just helping out in the hopes that this would serve them well when they did have the item and needed to do the fight.

DS was popped, killed, and the person who had the item got their shadow flames. And then someone who did not have the gauntlets touched a torch.

We were immediately beset by 9-10 demons from nowhere. I don't know if touching the torch did it, but they sure got to us fast, and someone died. That's when a BLM cast escape and 5 of us got out of there (leaving the other bits of the alliance to die there).

In short, you won't get the shadow flames if you have not yet opened your coffer. In fact, you may cause something very very bad to happen to your DS party.

I think what may have happened is that someone got too close to the wall... I heard they have eyes. You probably had that train trying to get to you before you killed DS. I didn't have my quest for this and touched the same torch as the person doing it to test, no huge train came.
I guess we were lucky. oo;

Well, I'd been dreading this key for a long long time. After reading all the stuff here, who wouldn't? x.x Yesterday, some friends and I decided to go AF hunting.(Me: Hey, lets go to the Necropolis to get my bell! Them: Yay!) First bell dropped in a matter of minutes, but the Redmage lotted on it and won just to annoy me. >>; But I digress. After that, the Drk in our group was all, "Hey, lets go to Beadeaux to get my Quadav Blood!"(Us: Yay!) After about two hours of hunting, we got the blood. But right before that, we got a tell asking to form an alliance so some key hunters could get the benifit of the two TH2's we had in our group. So, being the nice people we are(plus, one of the THF's was a friend of the person asking~), we agreed. About three minutes after the alliance, lo and behold, a coffer key drops(Us: Squeee!). I ask if I can lot on it(being the Whm I am an' all), and they say yes. I lot, win the key, and feel kinda bad. ^^; But, my group decided to go help the peoples, so all's good. Anywho, after some tank swapping, we got down to bid'ness. We moved around a bit, and eventually ended up in the four-door room. We pulled from there and, to make a long story short, got a total of FOUR(4) keys in about 2.5 hours(plus my coffer, which I died getting! :D). We had about 9-10 people in the alliance, with two Thieves, and party levels ranged from 57-61(I think.. there were some anon's). Party lineup was something like this: 2 Whm, 2 Drk, 1 Pld, 2 Thf, 1 Mnk, 1 Blm(sorry if I'm forgetting someone. ><).

I'm not trying to say this wasn't/isn't a hard key... I'm just saying that it apparently IS possible to get lucky and get a bunch of keys in a comparitivly short amount of time.

PS: Much thanks to the various people involed with this. ^^ Thanks again to the Whitemage for raising me so many times. >< I still feel dumb. Made lotsa mistakes~
Very hard key

I spent a total of like 15 hours and 5-6 different parties getting this key. I didn't even get it until level 67 WHM. If you're planning for this, bring coffee.
Evil evil key >.>
# Jun 13 2004 at 2:32 PM Rating: Decent
I got my key yesterday. It was hell ; ;
We had one full party for the most of the time, at some point we were five. I was WHM52, and the others were PLD58 PLD60 DRG58 RDM56 RDM57 (one RDM replaced by a BLM later, prolly lv58 or so too), or something like that anyways. As you see, not much dmg dealing and no high-lvls. No THF-subs. We needed three keys.
I was Carbuncle-pulling which actually went quite smooth.
The first two keys, for the PLDs, took us about three hours. Not bad for two keys.
After that, we spent four (from 3 to 7am -.-) hours there for my key ><
By the time we left, I (6 lvls lower than the highest lvl) had gotten more than 7000exp. XD

Activiate the quest for AF 1-2 (Boots) and then talk to Guslam again.
...
# Mar 23 2004 at 2:36 PM Rating: Good
This is not AF4 or AF6. This is the third coffer AF, or the Dark Spark AF.

AF1-AF3 refer to actual AF quests (that actually appear in the quest log). In the case of the White Mage, these are the weapon, the boots, and the body armor. The other three AFs are just known as coffer AFs, because in the case of Garliage Citadel and Crawlers' Nest, there is no actual quest associated with them. If you ask a Japanese player for help with AF4 or AF6, you will just get a blank stare. I couldn't tell you why the Dark Spark AF isn't considered AF4 since it is a mini-quest, but it isn't.

Anyway, what I really wanted to mention is that this key was a pain to get for me. The Quadavs that drop the key con Tough, Very Tough, and Incredibly Tough to me at 60. If you're going to be doing this with a level 60 party, you'll need a real exp party, because these are not easy. That said, I did this with some friends (4x LB 60, and 2x LV 75, including a LV 75 THF), and we were able to kill the Quadavs in pretty short order, yet it still took me 4 hours to get a single key drop. I talked to two other people--one person said it took them 4 hours to get a single key, and another person said it took them 8 hours. Either way, it seems like this is a miserably rare drop.

Just wanted to warn you. Good luck.

At 60 you will need a full XP gain party _at least_ to be able to fight the needed quadavs...especially because they spawn very close to each other and link like crazy.

My suggestion is to form a skillup alliance. Get shouty in Jeuno for an hour, requiring a certain level (60+) to come along and get as close to 12 people as possible. Set a deadline for leaving so you aren't waiting all day (e.g. 'at 0:00 on Firesday we are departing for Beadeaux'). Make sure everyone brings a variety of weapons with them and silent oils/echo drops all around for getting by the afflictor machines.

Take the alliance to the junction room at M-7 of the 2nd map of beadeaux. Then pull 1-2 quadavs at a time into the room and repeat that process for as many hours as it takes to get your key/level people up to the weaponskill of their choice. In my case it took 3 hours to get 2 keys, and 4 people learned level 175-200 WS in the time. Mind you this was 3 hours of almost nonstop killing of quadavs, in pulls that brought along 2-3 each time. We must have killed 60+ Quadavs (no lie) just to get 2 keys. Fair warning. The good news is that the coffer spawns are extremely close to that junction room, so whoever gets a key can cash it almost immediately.

It was agony waiting for the second key to drop, but eventually it did. We had a 72 THF in our party. I can't imagine the pain of getting this drop in a 6-man party without a THF of any kind...

the hand AF is exactly the same for every job, you talk to same npc have to beat same NM, except you get coffer at different place but rest is all same. so once you get the coffer, its quite easy to put a group together to kill the NM, its not hard a group of 55ish can defeat it, but make sure you know how to get the gate and use sneak invis to avoid fights, you will be overwhelmed by easy preys if not careful
