Summary

Gauntlets wrought by Borghertz, the legendary craftsman, lie hidden somewhere in Vana'diel.

Walkthrough

Note: You must have completed Messenger from Beyond - WHM AF1 and activated Prelude of White & Black - WHM AF2 to obtain this quest.

To start this quest, first speak with Guslam at H-8 of Upper Jeuno. The galka will tell you about a pair of old gauntlets seen in Beadeaux that might have once belonged to the legendary Borghertz.

Go to Beadeaux and obtain a Beadeaux Coffer Key. The following monsters drop coffer keys: Darksteel Quadav, Ancient Quadav, Platinum Quadav, and Sapphire Quadav.

Next, find a coffer. All eight spawn points where coffers can appear are located on the second map. The spawn points are at (K-7)(note: there are two possible spawn points at these co-ordinates), (K-8), (L-6), (M-6), (M-7)(note: there are two possible spawn points at these co-ordinates), (N-7). Trade your key to the coffer to receive the key item Old Gauntlets. You do not have to be a white mage when you open this coffer.

After receiving the old gauntlets, return to Guslam, who says the gauntlets are the work of Borghertz -- but that he cannot repair them. Head down to the Tenshodo shop in Lower Jeuno, where Yin Pocanakhu talks about a toolbox that won't open. Pay her 1,000 gil, and she says the toolbox is on top of a crate in Port Jeuno, in the auction house area. Find the toolbox and examine it, and the ghost of Borghertz appears. He asks you to bring him some shadow flames from Castle Zvahl.

Return to Castle Zvahl Baileys and examine the torch at F-8. A notorious monster bomb by name of Dark Spark will appear. Defeat Darkspark and examine the torch again to get the key item Shadow Flames.

Once you have the flames, return to Jeuno and examine the toolbox again. The ghost of Borghertz reappears, and he uses the flames to repair the old gauntlets. He then gives you your Healer's Mitts.

Key opening...
# Jul 10 2008 at 1:46 PM Rating: Decent
As many people in the history of FFXI have said...

Step one: Change into the job for the item you want to get. Then talk to the NPC to open the quest.
Step two: Change into what ever job you want to after that. (LV1-75 anything) and open the chest. Then you will get the key item...

Doesn't matter which job you are when you open the chest, just talk to guslam with your job you want the AF for.

if i dont have to be whm to open the coffer to get the old gauntlets then can i use my thf as a main and just open the coffer like how i can open chests?

To clear this up (Correction Sent)

1/ Its NOT, I repeat NOT Castle Zvahl Baileys Coffer. It is Beadeaux Coffer
2/ You must be WHM to start the quest, but you can open the Coffer as any job you choose (just did it as 75RDM)

Hopefully the guide above will get sorted out.
Beadeaux?

*******THIS IS WRONG*******

BF went to get the coffer for this quest at Baileys, opened coffer, got 8000g. Checked here, and saw it said Baileys alright, but checked here:

http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Healer%27s_Mitts

....aaand its a Beadeaux coffer. This guide says NOTHING about Beadeaux.

/sigh. What a waste of time.

Perhaps your boyfriend should have read what Guslam said, rather than following the guide.

I just got the Old Gauntlets for this today, I'm 57 whm, and tagged along with some LS buddies when a PLD was asking for help with the coffer. We went in with a 70 RDM, 75 PLD, 59 PLD (he needed coffer), and me 57 whm. We where chopping through and we got a key dropped off the first Ancient that we fought, and a second key dropped in maybe half an hour, mind you we didn't have TH1 or 2 (which I understand has no effect on rare/ex drops).

After that the 75 PLD had to go, so we disbanded, but I decided to go back and try my luck with grabbing the coffer, using my sneak and invis abilities. I was successful doing this in Crawlers Nest and the Citadel. So I go in and test out the curse since I didnt want to be silenced, and found it left me with about 200 hp and mp, which I decided was enough. So I went on ahead with sneak and invis, found the coffer at the 5th spot I checked, two Quadavs near it but looking the other way, quickly dropped invis and traded key and started warping out, got aggroed at the last second and smacked for 200 damage, fortunatly I had about 300 hp at the time, and I survived the warp out of there, with 9 mp to spare. Didn't even have to use any of the pineapple juice I prepared.

It was intense, great experience. Now I just need to do Dark Spark >.<

Anyways, thats my coffer experience, and thanks to Djbobby, Nukemffxi, and Doodee for helping me out. ^^
Two Jobs
# Apr 15 2007 at 9:54 AM Rating: Decent
I'm not sure if this is true, because i haven't been able to test it.

When I first got my DRK to 54, I did this quest and killed Dark Spark. However, when I went to do it for WAR, soloing on drk/nin, i clicked the Torch and it gave me the flame.

For Two jobs, you only have to do this once on another job, I.E. my DRK killed it, but my WAR didn't have to kill it.

I am not sure if someone else fought it before me, because I was helping with a SAM test and a coffer key. If anyone can test this before I get SAM to 50, reply please^^.
Finally

Woot! Just got my healing mitts at 64 Whm. It was hard to find people to help me. Finally, a 75 Bst and 75 Mnk helped me get the key, took about 3 hours for it to drop during full moon. The coffer was easy to find even though another pt was after it too. For the DS fight I went with the 75 bst and a 57 Thf and it took about 2 mins. Good Luck guys! ^-^

I have read on several webpages that you can just go solo dark spark, die, wait for de-pop, then reraise and grab the shadow flame. I really dont trust any other site other than Allakhazam. Anyone know if this is true?
Question!
# Feb 04 2007 at 4:11 AM Rating: Decent
No ones been able to answer this for me yet, figured I'd ask here.

I previously started "Borghertz's Harmonious Hands" for my BRD AF, but then never really wanted to do Castle Zvahl key/coffer and left it unfinished.

Do I need to complete this quest before starting Healing Hands, or is it ok if I talk to him on WHM will it start the WHM version of this quest.

thanks^^
Question!
# Feb 04 2007 at 8:23 AM Rating: Decent
No, you must first complete the brd af qst before you can recieve the other... I had to do the same thing for drk

Ouch. Okay I was afraid of that, but thank you for the reply. ^^,

They make the hard part sound easy and the easy part hard.

The first time I went for the key me and a 72 DRK died after a link. I went a few days later with 75 NIN, THF, WAR and a 58 WAR. We got 3 keys in around an hour. I got mine and left.

That was easy.

As for Dark Spark. You have to be carefull not to get aggro so much. I went with a 75 MNK. We died getting to DS by him trying to clear the area before the fight. We tried again, this time I popped DS, he 2 hour'd it. This guy is solid he took the mnk's 2hr and had about 30% of it's HP left. Then it happened... The entire castle aggroed me and him. about 20 demon soldiers came at me and killed me in a few seconds. They vanished after I died so the mnk had time to kill DS with about 100 HP left on him. I reraised and touched the torch, then casted escape.

The last part was faster... But had more death. >.> I love my gloves.

Key yes, please

I just got the Beadeux &%*¨*¨*&(*&()¨&%¨%$%$ key, it took me "only" 7 hours, with the help of 3 pld lvl 70 who were after testimony, and a rdm 75 from my LS. Not even god knows why they make it so hard to get this drop.
Nice
# May 02 2006 at 9:51 PM Rating: Decent
I got lucky i guess.. went in with WHM59(me) RDM66 THF67 TF57 and MNK56 (who also needed key)

My key dropped on the first kill.. It's like the Quadav just handed the key to me.. Unfortunately we didn't get the monks key as it was 3:30am and THF67 had Dynamis >.<

not done Dark Spark yet gonna attempt that tomorrow i guess..
At last its over

Started to shout for help with the key and coffer then got invited into a party of 2 lvl 75 players who was going nere farming for kinred seals.

Manage to get the key and the coffer was not that far away from the drop.

Did another shout this time for help killing DS.
Someone replyed asking for a reward.
Told him there was no reward. (if I can't help ppl out with out asking for a reward then why should ppl help you out)
Some one else was aslo after DS too and we manage to get a lvl 72 nin.

This thing tock a lot of beating but it was not too hard to kill.
Kept casting Bio III alot on the nin.
Then it did self distroct, all I can say is thank god for stoneskin.

Checked the touch again.
Got item went back got gloves.

Now I'm Fully AFed out XD

Maybe i had dumb luck with this quest, i dont know, but i went to beadeaux, found a couple people farming and asked to join their party. After talking with them and helping them for about 5 minutes or so, the key dropped, and not more than 5 minutes after the key dropped, the coffer popped right behind us. From there, i went to jueno, recruited a 75RDM from my LS, and headed for castle zhavl(spelling) to fight Dark Spark. All in all, after a total of about 45 minutes, i was the proud owner of a pair of Healers Mitts. ^^ Now if only i could be this lucky and fast leveling my sub.
YAY I finally got it!

I just got this quest and i have only completed AF1 and AF2 for whm. i have done no other AF quests. Anybody know why i get the AF6 instead of the AF3 quest from Guslam? and if i complete the AF6 quest will i then be able to get the AF3 quest?

sorry if this is a stupid question... Please help me out if you can :) thanks in advance.

Though you may have already figured it out. Guslam gives you the quest for the AF hands, but is also unlocks AF3 and 4. Both of those are coofer hunts in Garliage and Crawlers nest respectably.

edited because I can't spell ><

Yea, just a casual note that no one has seemed to post here. If this is your second AF-Hands quest, you don't need to pay the npc an additional 10k to find the box.

Yea, it sounds stupid and all, but it wasnt posted anywhere. Plus, it made my day (woo).
Notworth it.

This is the only AF I haven't completed and I've heard the horror stories, as their are for almost every AF (oh no the bomb exploded me!)and many other quests. I tried thsi one and spent a total of 6 hours with no drop, then I had to leave for sleeping. The next day I spent all day trying to get a party with no go. Getting a party for the body AF wasn't even that hard.
SO what I have decided to do as one of the unlucky ones, is to save up my gil and buy the Marine Female Gloves which are infamously 2mill on Garuda, after having doubled sence I got wind of them -.- They are expensive but a nice choice to have, and perhaps considered the cowards way out. This means I can't get any other job's AF but I'll worry about that when I'm lvl 75.
They are totally out of my price range for a farm-for-silk type like me but I'm 1/4 of the way there after a week of constant farming (when im not at school) Still it's nice to have options
