Summary

Twenty years ago, a small nation was destroyed by the flames of war, and many died without reason. Your assistance is required in holding a ritual to send these troubled souls to their proper resting place in the afterlife.

Walkthrough

Note: You must have completed The Sacred Katana - SAM AF1 and waited until JP Midnight to begin this quest.

First, head out to Norg and talk to Jaucribaix at K-8. He says a feather from a rare bird is needed for a ritual to guide the lost spirits of the dead. Next, head to J-8 and talk to Washu, who needs a piece of Giant sheep meat, a Frost Turnip, a Bastore Sardine and a Hecteyes Eye to make bait for the bird. Bring her all four ingredients, and she gives you the special stew needed to lure the bird out.

Now, head out to Labyrinth of Onzozo. Stick to the left wall, all the way, until you see a hut, similar to the Ghoul huts found in Maze of Shakhrami. There should be a ??? there at (F-8). Examine the ??? and choose the option to lay down the special food to lure out the bird. An NM bird called Ubume will pop. This NM bird will cast horde lullaby. Once you've defeated Ubume, re-inspect the ??? and you will obtain a key item feather.

Return to Norg with the feather, and speak with Jaucribaix. He will accept the feather. Wait until after the next Japanese Midnight, then talk to him again. He will say that he has finally forged the katana, which he named the Yomotsu Hirasaka, for the ritual. You will receive this katana as a key item.

Next, travel to Valkurm Dunes and head to the hidden beach in the upper northwest corner of the map. Once you arrive at the beach, search the shoreline for a ??? spot. Wait until nightfall (20:00 to 4:00), and click the spot and choose to initiate the ritual. BE WARNED: Two VERY hard Notorious Monsters are going to spawn: Doman, a shadow, and Onryo, a ghost. After defeating both NMs, re-inspect the ??? spot to get a Faded Yomotsu Hirasaka (Key Item).

Take this back to Norg and talk to Jaucribaix again to receive your Myochin Sune-Ate.

For the Onzozo NM, I took a party of 75BLM, 68PLD, 68RDM, 56SAM, and 55SAM© We didn't use any 2hr's, and the battle only lasted about 3-4 minutes tops© It wasn't bad at all© In fact it looked to me like the 75BLM could have solo'd it with no problem©
NMs are weak

Regarding the first part of this quest:
Facing the hut at F-8 you will be standing in a tunnel WHERE A WIND ELEMENTAL POPS FREQUENTLY.
This is VT to a lvl 56. The thing popped on my party TWICE while we were clearing out gobs. First time the only person that had Escape (If your party is not 6*55 at least forget about killing it) conveniently got silenced and we had 2 casualties.

Facing the hut, to the left of it there is a dead end which makes for a decent place to kill this NM. However; if you can not kill the 3 goblins that spawn there fast, and with little downtime start the NM fight they WILL spawn on you during the fight. My party actually had 4 goblins spawn on us during the fight and luckily we all lived. EP-DC to a lvl 56 but getting hit for 60 (Go figure) by an outside source while fighting an NM is not good.
PT setup:
60 rdm/blm
56 rdm/blm (me)
56 pld/war
54 war/nin
50 sam/war
49 thf/war

The NM bird itself didn't give us much trouble. It's just a hostile enviroment.

easier than reported

As long as you've got a group of competent players, this is easy and doesn't require nearly as much help as stated.

We went with the following:

60 rdm/blm
56 rdm/blm
56 pld/war
54 war/nin (me)
50 sam/war
49 thf/war

It was a long fight, and a lot of fun. We had four goblin pops during the fight, but we all lived and the Samurai and myself (also a level 50 samurai) got the key item.

It was a way more fun and exciting than having a few 70+ players hold our hands through it.

The big bird fight actually took longer than the elvaan/bogy one for me. For the bird I had me, another SAM (who I think was level 57), a level 65+ THF, a level 60 RDM and DRG, and a level 50-something pld. The bird cast Horde Lullaby right off the bat, which made things go MUCH more slowly.

For Doman, I was sure after reading this walkthrough that I'd need a TON of help. 60WHM, 60DRG, 60PLD, 55NIN, 50DRK, and me all went out to Valkurm Dunes last night to spawn the baddies. The fight lasted about 15 seconds. One 1200-damage Penta Thrust from the drg was enough to do major damage to Doman, who I finished off with a Tachi:Koki (I did between 250-350 dmg with that WS and I'd recommend it for this fight because of it's light-based properties, if you've reached 55 to have it). The bogy was a bit tougher, mostly because he cursed all of us, but he went down in a hurry and I was left feeling very silly for getting so much help together. That fight is not nearly as hard as the posted walkthrough makes it out to be, although I suppose we got lucky for not ending up with Dimensional Death.

One more thing: there were two low-level parties on the secret beach at the time; I recommend shouting to warn them to back off lest they get hit with the bogy's AOE curse effect. And hey, if nothing else, they can watch you beat an undead Elvaan that they wouldn't see until much later in the game (or if Marchelute broke loose).

anti sleep trick
# Sep 14 2004 at 7:22 PM Rating: Decent
A little trick for the Bird, have the melee's and tank all use a poison potion at the pull, when you are poisoned, you cannot be slept, and the potion is weak and does very little damage, This worked great, and no one was slept. Needless to say the bird died very quickly.
What I used.....

Mad props to:
Sigma - 75 BST/WHM
Strov - 75 PLD/WAR

1st part...........Labyrinth of Onzozo
party:
75 BST/WHM
51 SAM/WAR (me)

Sigma sneak'd me through to the ??? where the bird appears. Along the way he charmed himself a Torama (a high lvl couerl). After he cleaned out the 6th tier gobs there, we prepped for battle.
He made the Torama his familiar and put up some buffs than i spawned the bird.
It very quickly used Horde Lullaby but not before the Torama engaged him. Ladies and gentleman, this battle was one-sided ^^. The bird never did any dmg to me or the BST and didnt even manage to knock the torama's health down to 3/4. I sat back in awe as that BST frigin Pwn3d that bird, it was incredible.

Returned to Norg and waited a long, long time for him to flag 2nd part of the quest :/

2nd part...........Valkurm Dunes
75 PLD/WAR
51 SAM/WAR (me)

I sneak/spawned the 2 NM's, Strov pulled Doman and began poundin the hell out of the poor shadow. I think Doman might have hit him once or twice, i know he got off an aspir, lol.
Once Strov utterly destroyed Doman, he moved into the water and engaged the ghost. I waited a bit for Strov to build enmity, than i ran in and 2 hr'd it.
While the ghost was much harder than Doman, he still didn't put up much of a fight to "Gilgamesh's greatest NA PLD". It got off an AoE curse spell and another spell that did alot of dmg to me, be careful fighting this guy in a group.

Returned to Norg and got my AF2 boots \(^.^)\

Do you really have to wait 24 earth hours to fight the 2 NM's in Dunes? If so that sucks, I want my freaking boots!

Pushover.

Was a complete and total pushover. Very Easy.
Party was
69 RDM/NIN
63 WHM/?
52 RDM/?
52 SAM/WAR (me)
RDM Could have soloed the bird easily. No one died..the 5th tier goblins adding on was kind of a pain during the fight..but besides that..very easy.

SAM AF2
# Sep 07 2004 at 11:04 AM Rating: Decent
Did the first part last night. Party Configuration

65 PLD
75 WHM
50 RDM
52 SAM (me)
54 SAM
51 SAM
51 SAM

Difficult part was clearing the gobs in the room cause there was an air element around which conned IT to me at 52. The RDM got aggro and ran which cause one death, Sleepga helps alot in this task. As soon as you clear the gobs hurry up and spawn the NM before they spawn again. PLD just kept hate while RDM refreshed and Nuked, WHM took care of healing. The SAMs just kept spamming Tachi:Enpi >> Tachi: Jinpu. At about half life the SAMs 2-houred and that was all.

Good Luck!

Well after searching for about a week or so, i finally got the help i was looking for to fight this bird. Now before the succesful fight, a lvl 75 Nin in full AF2 claimed that he would solo it for 10k. I thought that was a very good price but i warned him that he most likely couldnt, but he declared he was the "No.1 nin on the server" and uhh he got owned. He got the bird to about 1/2 health before he 2 Hred and blew up.

Anyway after this i new that i needed more help, so i offered a lvl 75 pld, lvl 75 whm, and lvl 75 mnk 10k each to kill this thing for me. They were all from the same ls, so they agreed. And they just destroyed this bird. (Note i use a FFXI log parser and when i looked this bird had 6,139 hp, and they killed it in about a minute and a half). After i thanked them and paid them they said so we going to the dunes now to kill the other ones? I didnt realize they were going to help me with that too, and i explained i had to wait till after midnight JP time to do the second part, and so they agreed to help tommorow. Im sure that this will go even more smoothly, but man 30k sure can buy you a lot of help from the right people ^^

If you paid 30k, it's not them helping. It is them working. You don't get paid to help. You get paid to work. ^.^

Wierd Occurance
# Aug 23 2004 at 10:42 PM Rating: Decent
Howdy, just finished this quest today (yippee!) but had a "weird occurance" that may or may not profit you. 1st part, took out the Bird with 59pld, 61whm, 61nin, 61drg, 61rdm, and 50sam (myself)... was a complete pushover if you have the firepower. Everyone stayed behind it, except PLD, and we pwn'd it.

2nd part, my 61rdm friend from earlier was getting cocky playing his 61rdm/25nin and said he would solo the 2 NMs. We go out there, he buffs up (stoneskin, phalanx, utsusemi, barcurse, enfire, etc.) and I spawn the undead with Sneak on. Pulled Doman and we proceeded to give it the beatdown (rather easily I might add, only one Dimensional Death got through for almost 300 dmg, but not even his lvl 2 nukes did much.) Just as we kill Doman, the ghost monster DISAPPEARS. I'm like "omg wtf 60dd4mn n3wbz0rz" and RDM just says we will give it another try. I inspect the ??? again, and I recieved the Faded GKT key item. Went to Norg, and got the boots. So, this could be a weird glitch or something, but just wanted to let people know that it happened ; ;

Exenor
50sam/30rdm/28whm/27war/25thf/25rng/ oh i give up.
Awesome!

ok this summary is super helpful but one question remains on my mind is the shadow elvaan like the shadw that spawns at nite fall by the wildflowers? guess not ^^ but i dont worry to much my main concern is the AF5 sounds uber difficult but ill manage thanks to hese summarys ^^
easy.

Hmm.

I have only done the first part of this atm.. however.. i must say the bird is NO PUSHOVER. take a high level tank 70+ pld, or nin is best. A 60+ DD or 2, and a 60+ mage. I personally had a 70 pld, 75 whm, and 64 sam as well as myself a 52 sam.. have the mage stand back so that the birds foe lullaby doesnt hit him(he casts this often). As a note, the bird has huge defense and hp, but very low attack.. so a blm as a DD would be excellent.. however.. a set up as listed above shows no difficult task in defeating the bird. Although the battle is somewhat intense and long from the huge defense and HP. Just keep your wits about you and keep knocking him down, with his low attack the mage should be able to keep up with heals quite easily. this NM is great bird, job bard, approximately lv 65+ and i believe his name was Ubume.
corrections to the guide
# Jul 20 2004 at 3:44 AM Rating: Default
correction 1.) u do not i repeat do not have to wait 24 hours to go back and get your GKT Key Item. i went back 5 hours before the 24 hour time was up and got it. I'm thinking its more along the lines of after midnight japan time you can go get it like in RDM AF2.

Correction 2.) then name of the undead elvaan NM is Doman

other then that this was a very easy quest we did it with a single pt lvl range 50-58 no trouble at all.

I just finished the second part today, with some LS help. I spawned them with sneak on, and we just pulled them one at a time. The Dark Elvaan guy is a pushover, but the Ghost takes a lot more work to kill. I had 73pld, 50whm, 63rdm, 53sam<me>. They both were dead in under 1 minute, extremely easy with the right help.

Good luck to those who still need to do this.

Hello, I am on the Shiva server. If anyone reads this and you are on my server, I would appreciate any help you could lend to me. I find it very wierd that alot of the high lvl people charge outrageous amounts of money for help. I found out that some 75 plds charge 50k, that is just stupid, I mean anyone that high should know that everyone will need help with their AF quest, just goes to show you how greedy some humans are, I mean I have np giving a reward, maybe 10k-15k at the most. Well, if you cna help me, please give me a tell if you are on during these times, I would really appreciate it.

me and my LS just worked Doman and Onryo. config: 52sam(me), 53thf, 51brd, 64rdm. we did like one person said and used sneak when spawning them. just pulled them over and beat them down. Doman is a pushover, just watch for Dimensional Death. and Onryo ended up casting Tornado (which my Tachi: Hobaku couldn't stun for some reason), but the thf had nin sub a Utsusemi up. not quite as hard as everyone says it is. good luck fellow samurai. I finished this last week.

The ostritch was attempted with
52Pal 52Blm 52Sam 51Sam 51Whm 50Rdm
We did fairly well ont he 1st attempt despite the Pal dieing about 1/3 into the fight, but ended up wiping in the end.

For the 2nd attempt we added another rdm for healing power and completely whooped it. The hard part about this Ostritch at this level is putting up with its damage output long enough to kill it. It hits fairly hard, and does some triple attack skill thats did about 400-500 damage to the Pal. The reason he died the 1st run was because the whm couldn't keep up with the damage output from Triple attacks and normal attacks. With 2 healers it was easy. Make sure you have the pal stand in front of the bird and EVERYONE ELSE BEHIND. That way only the pal will get sleeped and since hes tanking, he'll get instantly awakened anyway.

The 2nd part was insanly easy. First off...
USE SNEAK.
Trigger the quest with sneak on, the mobs won't aggro you and you can pull them one at a time. Once you do this, its just killing 2 average XP mobs really. They weren't hard at all.

You can do this quest without needing higher level help. Just a decent party who has thier stuff together

Had 7 people, includign 2 70+s thief and a bard.
First part in onzozo was unbelievably easy it's just you have to pay attention to the sleeps.

Second part I only had 5 people and everyone was 54 or lower. Main thing we didn't know, ghost will cast ancient magic and it will seriously hurt. I'd recommend a bard being there to lullaby them or else you could lose a member or two to death like I did.

Overall this quest isn't nearly as hard as people had made it out to be. It was slightly difficult but nothing out of the ordinary for an af, we had more trouble killing the af2 mobs for bard than this.
