Summary

The spirit of Curilla's father Rainemard seems to be trying to say something.

Walkthrough

You must have completed The Crimson Trial - RDM AF1 and Enveloped in Darkness - RDM AF2, and activated Borghertz's Vermillion Hands to obtain this quest.

Start the quest by speaking to Curilla at I-9 in Chateau d'Oraguille. She will ask you to continue your investigation on what had happened to Raimenard, her father.

Next, head to K-6 in Southern San d'Oria and speak with Sharzalion. He says in order to communicate with a spirit, you must throw an old coin into the fountain in the ruins of Fei'Yin. Fei'Yin is located on the far north end of Beaucedine Glacier.

Head to Fei'Yin. Entering with the quest activated will cause a notorious monster ghost named Miser Murphy to spawn at H-8 on the first map, in the room with the large fountain. Head to the fountain room and kill Miser Murphy, which drops an Antique Coin. Trade the coin to the point at the north end of the fountain, also in H-8, for a cutscene.

After the event, return to Southern San d'Oria and speak with Sharzalion. Then speak with Daggao, the Galka down by the stage to the right. Daggao says he found a strange box in Garlaige Citadel that could possibly be opened with a Nail Puller.

Head to Garlaige Citadel. You need at least four people in your party to get through the first banishing gate. Just past the gate to the left is a room with an oaken box. Clear the room, then examine the box. A notorious monster called Guardian Statue will spawn. Kill the Guardian Statue and it will drop a Nail Puller. Trade this to the oaken box for another cutscene.

Return to Northern San d'Oria. As soon as you zone in, you will receive a final cutscene and receive your Warlock's Chapeau.

In the final cutscene where you get the Warlock's Chapeau, the NPC who gives the order "The enemy is here! Knights, to arms!" and who warns Prince Trion about Curilla is Ferdechiond. Ferdechiond does not appear as an NPC entry in current day Vana'diel, but is the quest NPC for "Bad Communications" in Abyssea - Vunkerl. Nice to see he survived Abyssea to become a leader of the guard.

just solo'd this as 75 Smn/Whm
had a practice match earlier with Miser Murphy to see what it's like
fought it on a lightsday with fenrir, and got it down to 5% health before
running out of mp and having to zone. ...So, realizing that the problem was mp
I went back to town and re-planned accordingly and compensated for such:
brought with me 2x super potion, and 1 pro-either.
then went back and fought miser again on a watersday and beat it
without much of a problem. ...now, all that's left to deal with is the doll fight. *ws*

miser obnoxious drain hp move which only took around 280 hp from fenrir
...so, it wasn't too bad considered eclipse bite was doing around 955-1300 dmg to it. But still somewhat annoying though.

Attempted to solo Miser Murphy as 73 nin/rdm accompanied by a 75 rdm/whm. Murphy didn't cast any aga spells when I fought him, however his attack rate is probably 1.5 times greater than an average ghost, which I really didn't expect it when preparing for him. He is incredibly resistant magic, particularly dispel which is dark-based, which pretty much leaves his ice spikes up the entire fight. Nuking was **** poor compared to melee atks, so rdm did nothing but paralyna me from ice spikes or throw out a cure. Slow II landed no problem, which helped me big time keeping up shadows with haste on. His accuracy is pretty decent as well, so any attempt to solo this dude will have to be exclusively pushed to thf or nin with capped evasion (to prevent the 500 hp drain per hit) or maybe smn. His hp drain doesn't proc all the time, probably one in three hits is my best guess when I was vulnerable for his multi-attack streak. Not an incredibly difficult fight, but his massive hp drain requires a blink tank or a massive healing support for non-blinkers.

As for the Guardian Statue, his attack rate is probably the same as Murphy's, except he double attacks about 1 out of 2-3 hits. He never used Meltdown in this fight. He has a vast array of TP moves, which the most annoying one is the sleep move that passed through the shadows. He hits like a truck when shadows are stripped, probably 160 damage, however since I was on evasion setup, I didn't get hit much. I had a much easier time killing him when his berserk was up. Alot of damage dealers is a plus to this fight on any setup, otherwise haste is needed for blink tankers that doesn't max out their evasion.
omg too easy

This is totally soloable by a 75THF and no need to have capped EVA. Both NM fights were easy as pie to solo.

Just completed both Miser and Guardian with a NIN75 friend and myself as RDM50 (LOL). NIN/RDM and RDM/WHM for Murphy. NIN/WAR and RDM/WHM for Guardian.

Recommend NIN uses WHM, RDM or even BLU on Murphy for those times that other ppl get Sleepga'd, and cures themself when mage(s) are down on mp. Other than the extremely annoying Ice Spikes and a few random Blizzaga IIs he used, Murphy wasn't very tough, just took a few min to kill. Only got into trouble once where NIN got down to 200hp when I was slept.

On Guardian, relatively easy, keep an eye out for Kartstrahl (sleep + dmg). Never once had the doll use Typhoon or Meltdown, but I kept up Barfira just in case the whole time. Patience is key here, since it will take about 7-10 minutes to bring down the doll with just NIN killing.

Good luck to all aspiring RDM wanting their pimp hats!!

I'm 0/2 on the first NM, and haven't tried the second yet (obviously). The first time was an accident, I was with friends killing Shadows for a Teleport-Vazhl map for myself and we didn't realize he was there. Got aggro and after deciding we didn't want to risk dying by trying to kill him (rdm56ish, blu57ish, whm60ish, pld66ish) we ran...but didn't have a map and ended up dying after he cast Sleepga.

The second time was planned, and I went in with 59SMN, 60RDM, 71SMN, 74RDM, and 75DRG, but we underestimated him. I just did my healing and refreshing, being as my melee is...poor, to say the least. We were doing fairly well until we got him down to 30-50% health or so, despite the drains. That's when he brought out Sleepga >_< The higher RDM and DRG woke up, but the rest of us were asleep until they died and Miser came after us. By the time I woke up he was at 10% health or so, but by the time I died a minute or so later he was at over 50% health.

I think we could have won, but we underestimated the mob. Two of us could have had RR up, but neither did (they both thought it would be a breeze), and I half think we should have pulled Miser out of the main room so that when we all died and he respawned we could have simply raised ourselves rather than HPing, and then taking another stab at him. Lastly, after the fight the 71SMN apoligized for taking Miser for an easy mob--he only had Carbuncle out (using his Carby mitts) and if he comes again said he'll use Fenrir.

I'm doing the fight again tonight, with any luck, and hopefully we'll do much better :D

Tried again last night, and beat both Miser Murphy and Guardian Statue. The setup was RDM60, BLU60, WHM63, PLD68, SMN71, and BST75.

The WHM had RR2 up, and we went after Miser and had no issues this time, it went smooth as could be. No one had anywhere they needed to be, so when I asked they offered to help with the second NM as well.

I wasn't sure if we would be enough for him, but it went even better than Miser Murphy. The AoE attack was pretty nasty, but I think the lowest anyone got in health was me, going from 780 to 280 (after a few of them, mind you). We just spammed Curaga/CuragaII/Healing Breeze and it was a piece of cake :)

After only intending to get the Garlaige Coffer done during the day, I'd ended up getting both that and this quest completed ^^

Story, as with most Garlaige Coffer hunts, starts at the first banishing gate. After a couple of hours messing around waiting at the third gate with only 3 people, I eventually met up with 2 people who would help, and we managed to get a 4th through shouts (and would you believe it, it was not one person, but an alliance of /anon's looking for their Genkai 1 drop who eventually kind of helped - Gilsellers anyone??) We stumbled through the third banishing gate, and that was it, at last I'd gotten through that gate!

Two of us needed the coffer (Darkrein and me), and we decided to roll for it if we found one. Sure enough, we found a coffer behind the gate, I won the roll (with 992 ^^), and took the coffer whilst the 3rd person with us (a 75 WHM named Turtleman) zoned any aggro. I'd already said I'd help with the last coffer and I stuck to my word, waiting for the repop behind the banishing gate. 35 mins and no pop, so the 3 of us ran to the second gate, and found someone else there who needed it open. Quickly through, and we got the coffer no trouble. Warlock's Tights obtained!

~

On to this actual mission now, and Darkrein had already mentioned they were doing the last AF quest later, and invited me along. First up was Fei'Yin, and the party was 55RDM (me), 75NIN, and 75MNK (called Saube, thanks for the help). On the long run there I managed to get the help of a 72SMN and another MNK who were there for the Shiva fight (thanks to Yunon and the other guy whos name I cant remember)

Miser was a doddle with the setup we had, killed him twice and got the cutscene for us both, then left to get the scenes in Sandy.

Back in Jeuno again, and more help had been recruited for the Garlaige fight. Eventual setup was something along the lines of 75WHM 75NIN 75NIN 75MNK 55RDM and 75RDM. Easy fight no troubles, Silence actually stuck (even from me, the lowest level in the party), and we killed him 3 times for everyone who needed it. Got the cs, and after everyone'd done it was back to Sandy again for the last CS (which is quite funky actually), and the Warlock's Chapeau!

Thanks to Yunin, Turtleman, Potter, especially Darkrein, and to everyone else who helped at all :-)

The best part of Final Fantasy XI is its rich storyline. It separates this game from other MMORPGs. I chose to give my character a storyline that goes along with the game's storyline. I find that this is a more fun way to play the game. Playing the game just to fight in the endgame and collect elite equipment is very boring and is totally missing the main objective of the game, which is to guide your character through the storyline which is to save the world.

I cant get this quest to start.
I have the fencing Degen, and the boots.
I have talked with curilla, and Sharzalion, and the npc behind the bar counter. I just get the "you went to the chapel and talked to a ghost how impetious of you" line. I also have talked to guslam in juneo, and have gotten the coffer key for garliage (dont have the tights yet). What am I doing wrong?
Do i need to get the tights bc I have the key? Do I have to have the sword and boots equiped to start the quest?
Any help appreciated.

The quest, again begins with Curilla in Chateau d'Oraguille.
She will ask you to continue your investigation on what had happened
to Raimenard, her father.

LIES!

Starts at Sharzalion. Curilla just tells me to sod off.

You must have talked to her after you finished the boots quest and forgotten about it. I just did it, and Sharzalion wouldn't tell me anything until I went to Curilla, who asked me if I would continue to investigate her father's death.
SMN

Just thought I would share my experience to this quest as a 75SMN to give another perspective.

~Fei'Yin with Miser Murphy. I was able to find MM waiting at the fountain <G-8>/<H-8>. Doing this solo, I was able to bring it down to 20-30% before I ran out of MP using Predator Claws. Also, it's Drain did 300-400 on my avatars so kiting with Carbuncle wasn't worth it. Luckily, I ran into a friend of mine and his party and myself took it down. It's also possible to duo this with someone that can stick Gravity well and then BP & Release to conserve MP + Refresh if your with a RDM. I tried using Leviathan's Tail Whip, but it missed or didn't stick Gravity well at all. It's moves consisted of Drain, some black magic spells including AM, and added effect Drain. Trade the coin to the dry well before leaving.

~Garlaige Citadel with Guardian Statue. I found the Oaken Box at <G-8>, the first room to the left after passing the first Banishing Gate. I put up Reraise, Stoneskin, etc and summoned Carbuncle. As soon as I clicked the box, Guardian Statue popped and Carbuncle auto-attacked. With Carbuncle Mitts and other equipment to make Carby free, I soloed this NM for about 15-20 mins, going to the corners and waiting for a resummon, basically staying in the area with the multiple rooms and Banishing Gate #1. Finished off with Meteorite at 1% and got the Nail Puller. It basically used a single target move, an AoE attack, and Gravity Field, which I assume is a Gravity effect that's AoE. Try to stay away from the statue if kiting. Trade to the Oaken Box before leaving.

And that's it. I hope this will help and open up other possible strategies.
Where do you get old coin from?

Everyone is saying how easy it is and hard it is but what i need to know is where do I get the OLD COIN from? I have finished all parts and have talked to dude can it be any old coin? Like a beast coin or something? P;ease help me with this information. Or does it take a while to spawn? Do I have to actually trade a coin to it? Or is it an automatic spawn when you enter the room and it take a while to spawn?

It's quite simple, really. It's stated in the above description as well. Kill the NM, Miser Murphy, in Fei'Yin and you'll receive an Antique Coin. Trade the coin to the ??? on the North end of the fountain, and you should get a cut scene. Good luck with getting your hat!

Okay, just did this AF and found out that Murphy is a cake!
Statue was a basterd! Our lineup was: 75PDL, 75WHM, 75SMN, 65RDM and 60rdm/blm
i'd say that Statue had one bad *** resistance, ES debuff's didin't go in, but i'd say that Statue is a cake when you pull him close to 1# banishgate and have your mage's stand a bit back since *******'s AoE hit me like 200dmg a shot with rdm defense on and 600~ with no defense's and thats bad if you're lil' tarutaru like me! my max HP is like 700~ (O_o). So as long as you pull the ******* near 1# gate and have your mage's away from AoE range it's a cake ^_^
Good luck to fellow redmage's doing their AF's
Ps. i feel your pain!

Miser can definitely be soloed by a rdm with a little luck. I give full credit to Neolirian's post (in here somewhere) about how to solo the hat quest.

Went there as 59rdm/29blm and pulled him with gravity (buffs were Protect 3, Shell 3, stoneskin & blink). He immediately started casting AM so I legged it for the zone. I think the time it takes to cast the AM caused me to lose hate pretty quick 'cos I had to go back & get him. Once he was at the zone I started zoning in, casting DoT, zoning out etc. You need a little luck at the start as you get used to how long to wait before zoning back in - I zoned out near the start with 69 hp after I zoned in to find he'd already slept me! My DoT's were Poison II, Bio II & burn (with relevant ele staves macro'd in). I hit some bad luck when a couple of ppl zoned in as I was zoning out. I went back in to find they'd run off with him. I was lucky enough to find him again, but unlucky in that he'd regened to full.

I pull him back to the zone again and get him down to around 40% when more ppl zone in. He'd already taken a swipe at a thf trying to zone out and by the time I was able to start casting again...he had full hp!

Anywho, 3rd time of asking I get no interference, DoT him to within a sliver of his life then 2hr, a couple of Cure IV's and he's dead XD

You need a lot of patience to do this, but it feels good knowing you've won on merit. Not sure if I'll try the 2nd one solo though!
