Description

First, a few notes about Avatar in general fights. This is not the Trial Size quest, which is the solo fight, capped at level 20 (refer to Trial Size Trial by Ice for that quest). Everyone who is involved in the fight must have a tuning fork of the correct protocrystal. There is no cap on this battle, although there is a 30-minute time limit (not that it ever seems to be important).

General level guidelines: 60+ for melee and 55+ for mages. You’ll want a Black Mage for certain and a solid tank, but the rest is relatively flexible. A well-balanced party is critical, though. You’ll likely want at least 2 of the following 3: Red Mage, White Mage and Bard. You will want one of the melee or the Bard to be able to cast Bar-a spells. Having the WHM or BLM try to cast them will be problematic. Our strategy for this was to have the RDM sub WHM and melee using the appropriate En-spell for easy Bar-a casting. Additionally, if you can buy an Enhancing Torque (usually much cheaper than corresponding Torques), that will add 2-3 points of resistance to Bar-spells. Additionally Mal-rings (from the ghost NM’s in Gusgen Mines) can be helpful for the fight. You can buff up before entering the protocrystal, so feel free to do so and rest up while still outside.

Battle strategy for all six fights is pretty much the same. The battlefield layout for all six fights is exactly the same, although the coloration scheme for the battlefield will be different. The battlefield is shaped like a long path up the side of hill, with a switchback about halfway to the top. This topographical feature allows the mages to stand above the fight (and out of easy reach of the avatar) while still being able to cast spells upon the combatants. This allows for the tank(s) to have extra time to pull hate back should the mages draw it. It is ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL to keep the correct Bar-spell up at all times. Not doing this will result in multiple deaths when the Avatar’s 2-hour comes (at about halfway), and will likely produce a loss. Each avatar is also only easily susceptible to debuffs of the element they are weak to (i.e. Shiva can be Paralyzed). Whether they are susceptible to other enfeebles of very high level is not confirmed.

It is strongly recommended to fight each avatar on the day it is weak to (i.e. Shiva on Firesday) and even more strongly recommended NOT to fight the avatar on its day (i.e. Shiva on Iceday). Spells of each element are much stronger on their specific day of the week.

Each quest is repeatable, but only once per real life day. Once you have returned to the quest giver and gotten your reward, you have to wait 24 hours (some say midnight Japanese time) in order to get the quest again. At that point, you can get a new tuning fork. Each time you complete the quest, you can choose ONE reward from the list, which varies from avatar to avatar.

In order to get the Fenrir quest (The Moonlit Path), you have to have whispers (key items) from all six elemental avatars. This means that you can’t turn them in for reward until you have all six, at which point you can give them to the Fenrir quest giver (Leepe-Hoppe in Windurst Waters). So, in order to be able to get Fenrir and all six avatars, you’ll need to fight each of them at least twice. Additionally, if you are a Summoner, the Evoker’s Ring is only obtainable through the Mama Mia quest in Norg, which would mean you would have to fight them each a third time.

If you can’t get any of these quests, the problem is likely fame. Each quest giver is a taru who stands next to a non-taru warrior. If you don’t have sufficient fame, the taru will just complain about being hurt a lot while his companion will discuss perseverance and not giving up. If you have sufficient fame, the Tarutaru will give you the fork. The non-taru will give you a Trial Size Tuning Fork if you have met the requirements.

TRIAL BY ICE

To obtain the Ice Avatar Shiva, first speak of Gulmama in North San D’oria, near the exit to West Ronfaure and the Watchtower. If you have sufficient fame, he will give you a tuning fork of ice (key item).

To use this, you need to travel to Fei’Yin and find the Cloister of Frost. To travel to Fei’yin by foot, you must walk through Ranguemont Pass and then travel through Beaucedine Glacier to the very north end. A map of all of these places is highly recommended, but Fei’Yin in particular. Sneak is all that is needed in Fei’Yin until you get to the very end and see Weapons.

To get to the Cloister of Frost from the Fei’Yin front door, take a right out of the first room and follow that path for awhile. Keep straight when you have a choice, and eventually you will come to stairs at G-9. Go down the stairs (check the bats at the bottom – they are a lot harder than those at the top). Take the first left you come to beyond the stairs and once you come to a room, take the NW passage. Follow that path for a bit and take the first left. You will come to a large room full of Utukkus, Golems and Bats. Follow the right wall in the room north until you come to another passageway – take it. You will walk through a couple of rooms with Spectres and you will eventually see some Weapons. Put up Invisible for these and run by them. Shortly past then you will zone into the Cloister of Frost. The Protocrystal is right inside the front door – as is the Cermet Headstone for ZM5.

Try to fight Shiva on Firesday, and do not fight her on Iceday. Keep up Barblizzara at all times, if you can.

Once you defeat her, you will acquire the Key Item: Ice Whisper. Return it to Gulmama for your reward, or hold onto it. If you have all six whispers simultaneously, you can give them to Leepe-Hoppe in Windurst Waters to gain the Moon Bauble – which is basically the Tuning Fork of the Moon – the ability to fight Fenrir. If you are collecting items for the Evoker’s Ring, you will want the Rust ‘B’ Gone.

Well.... I did this battle over the weekend. I had a 62 MNK, 58 BLM, 60 RDM, 60 THF, 63 SAM, and myself a 56 WHM. We got owned. Everything started off great. We pulled her a back a bit. The mages used Posion Poitions to help prevent sleep. Half way through the battle she used her 2hr. Killed one, and really hurt another. The BLM Firega II really pissed it off. Needless to say. Once I tried to heal the remaning tank and after the BLM was killed, we knew we where dead.

Second time around, things where a littl better. I had a 58 DRK, 75 MNK, 65 PLD, 61 BRD, 62 RDM, and me again 56 WHM. The PLD started the fight. I was at my camp and we where waiting for the PLD to pull. I don't know what happend, but SHE KILLED THE PLD with no problems. He got suck where he was, and I couldn't get close enough to him. We won the battle because of the MNK. He sat there and took the 2hr attack well everyone else ran at the 1/2 way point. Hit him for 400, that was it. Battle was over a little after that.

So to Answer your question... I would say you have a decent chance of winning. But, I would recommend getting a MNK for every Avatar Battle. They might not hold the hate or do to much damage, but they can surive the 2hr. Be very careful, her Sleepga attack can cripple the group. Use the posion potions on each group member to block the effect of it. Also, Blizzard IV hits any party memeber for 700+.
Beat Shiva earlier tonight...
# Apr 24 2004 at 5:10 AM Rating: Decent
Not nearly as hard as everyone makes it out to be, beat her in 7 mins 12 seconds with no deaths.

Party makeup was:
58/25 brd/whm
60/30 whm/blm
61/30 nin/war
61/30 nin/war
62/31 blm/whm
64/32 war/thf

The 2 nins took turns with tanking as the war/thf sa/ta off them. With Ice Carol and Barblizzra up Ice Defense was at 115 from 0. Blizzard 4 did 60-80 damage, 2 hr only 160 damage.

Bard and White Mage with approriate carol and bar spell while not mandatory make things a hell of a lot easier.

Good luck ^^

Wow, good job!
#REDACTED, Posted: Apr 13 2004 at 10:29 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) If you intend to just run away and hide, you're not being very useful to the group and I highly doubt they'll even want to take you, much less survive. GEE WE CAN TAKE A L70 MAGE WHO CAN CAST SPELLS AND HELP US *OR* THIS L30 PERSON WHO WILL JUST HIDE.
Survive?

Is it at all possible to survive this battle at 30? lk if you run away and stay out of range. what is the arena lk?
RE: Survive?
# Apr 20 2004 at 10:14 AM Rating: Decent
I would say you could do it at ~40 as either a BLM or RDM, because while you can cast spells that will help kill the avatar, you can stay out of range of the AoE and probably won't get aggro over the level 60+ in the group. You can possibly even do it as WHM, but for that, I'd imagine closer to 50+. As melee, don't even bother unless you are 60+ because you will have to be right in there, and unless you can do a good amount of damage, healing you will be a burden for the group. Mind you, all the lower-level estimates I gave are really only if a group is going to fight the avatar and is one person short and feeling generous...but if you've convinced a group of high-levels to help you get the avatar (linkshell, etc) it doesn't really matter what job/level you are, because I imagine you *could* just hide and stay away from any AoE.

But who knows, you might get lucky...if you're really determined to get it at level 30, try sitting outside Fei'Yin with your party flag up and a search comment saying you're looking for a Shiva group.

I'm not sure of coordinates off the top of my head, but I'll try to explain. If you enter North SanDoria from South SD, stay to the left as if you're going to the second "guild" section of North. Make a left as if you're going to the West Ronfaure Gate (or the Tower part that overlooks Ronfaure) and Gulmama is standing right there with an elf. (Before you'd turn left to go to the HP crystal.) Hope that makes sense.. and good luck!

Now there is no limit to how many times an avatar may be defeated in a day, And avatar can be fought every 10 min, or every 30 min by the same party. (Fixed for the Fenrir Avatar Quest)

Required Fame
# Mar 01 2004 at 2:16 AM Rating: Decent
To recieve this quest from Gulmama, your fame in San d'Oria must be level 7 Fame. This means that when you talk to Namonutice, South San at K-6 in The Lion's Spring Tavern, he must say to you:

"Hello, (your name). Practically all of the kingdom has heard of you now. What's more, your reputation is stellar. I look forward to even greater things from you !"

No you don't have to use your SMN job to fight her. But whatever job you do use, needs to be at least 60+. Lower than that and you will never survive the fight. The AE spells alone will take you out.

As for getting people to help...just remember that the only people that can go in and fight with you are people who have the tuning fork...IE. they must have the quest also.

Actually this isn't exactly true. I just received this quest with level 6 San D'Orian fame.

Namonutice told me: Muiradayi! I would venture that much the kingdom has heard your name! And your reputation sparkles. Indeed I am proud of you. And to think I first knew you when you were a new recruit!

Good luck, all you summoners!

Shiva is HARD you need to be at least lvl 60+ to live(If you fight) you best chance is to be lvl 65-75 and have 70+ help you same with all other avatars. Oh, and don't fighter her on Ice day, you'll get your a** kicked. And saying that never fight an avatar on there elemental day (IE: Don't fight Infrit on Fireday) I don't know if you fight them on the day of the element they are weak against they'll be weaker. But if so try to fight her on firesday(like at 0:00) so you have plenty of time.
