Summary

You have been asked to return a dropped item to its rightful owner. The passenger should be on the next airship flight.

Walkthrough

Passing through Customs you run into Swift who says he found something that was dropped by a passenger on the airship and asks you return it.

  • If you agree, he shows you a picture of the passenger and asks you to make sure you've memorized the picture.

Once you board the Airship and it takes off:

  • You will find several passengers on the ship all wearing similar, but not exactly the same attire.
  • When you talk to the one you think it is, you are given the option of returning the item.
  • If you find the right one, he thanks you and gives you 500G reward.

You can also start this quest from the Airship Port in San d'Oria, Windurst, and Bastok.

# Apr 02 2006 at 2:13 AM Rating: Decent
How much does this raise your fame actually before you go to the next level? If it raises it slightly, then I'll just stay on the airship each time to finish the quest with ease and gain 500 gil per attempt and fame.

Also a tip I picked up and always seems to work for me. If you have a lot of time before Airship arrives, just view the person multiple times and memorize every minute detail. Especially for the Tarutaru npcs you have to find.

I have done this quest a few times in the Jeuno-Kazham (vice versa) flights and have a 95% success rate out of the 25+ times I've done this.
If you don't have a windower
# Jan 23 2006 at 9:02 AM Rating: Decent
i've found a really easy way to remember who you have to give the dropped item to:

First, is there a hat/cap? how many feathers?
Second, what type of body equip? color?
Third, what type of leg equip? how long?
Forth, what color are the boots?
Fifth, what color are the gloves? the gem (if there is one)?

so, an example is:

Cap, two feathers, harness, striped pants, blue boots, blue gem.

i've only had this fail me once or twice, and that was cause there was someone distracting me when i was trying to memorize the clothing.

I started as Discerning, I'm pretty sure you move up to Very Discerning once you have done the quest fore each of the 4 cities.

I'm now Extremely Discerning... I think this happened either because I have done it like 5-10 times for every city, or because I had a long string of successful matches. (I'm just guessing as to why, but those seem like the only likely reasons)

I just ran into this interesting quest today, and I thought of some helpful ways to not have to memorize the passenger for which you have to return the dropped item: 1) Take a picture using a digital camera with LCD (this way, you can instantly view him/her at will during the flight). 2) Use Prnt Scrn button on the windows keyboard on the passenger, then paste into Paint. (if using a windower for FFXI, you can instantly view a pasted pic of the screencap that was taken using the printscreen button)
RE: Ways to get around memorizing the passenger:

The windower is definitely better, all you have to do is Alt+Tab between FFXI and Paint and use CTRL+V to see your screenshot. Super Easy. If you have a PS2 well too bad, PS2 sucks anyway, worse graphics and TV resolution is terrible compared to a CRT monitor, mine is 21" so size is not an issue either.

If you want the windower just google it in.

Oh, FFXI for Xbox 360 WILL have best graphics and clock speed, the only limitation is the TV. So if you have a CRT TV you're fine. Cuz even HDTV is only (720p, 1080i)

So here is a question worth investigating:

If this quest raises your Outlands fame, and Norg is in the Outlands, then shouldn't doing this quest also raise your Norg fame?

If yes, then you could do this quest 50 times, make 25,000g and get Utsusemi.
RE: Norg Fame?
# Jan 16 2005 at 5:31 PM Rating: Decent
that would help if Utsusemi was worth 25k; on my server, at the moment, it goes for 250k

Um the poster is saying that you use the fame you got in Norg to do the quest for the scroll, and that the 25K is just a bonus.

So kazham fame only for this quest but isn't kazham part of windy as well since the nation is mithra and mithra in kazham do share their trades and info with the windurstians

tell me when ya found out this is windy fame to
RE: v
# Dec 06 2004 at 7:30 PM Rating: Decent
Actually, this quest does raise Windurst fame. Most areas referred to as "outlands" have links to major nations. I've repeated this quest over and over with level 1 fame in windurst and came back with level 4. Also, if you repeat it a certain amount of times, (I'm not sure how many times I did this, I lost cound)then you get the title Very Discerning Individual.

If you take the quest in Kazham, it builds your OUTLANDS fame.
Fame?
# Jul 22 2004 at 3:43 PM Rating: Default
Okay I have a (Possibly) stupid question.

I'm Bastokan, rank 3 (and poor as dirt, that's why I'm doing this quest repeatedly in Kazham instead of everywhere else-- no money to buy Airship pass and I'm not rank 5 yet).

I have low Windy fame (as far as I know, I've only done a few quests-- Does this effect Kazham fame? Cause my Kazham fame is in the gutter too ^^), level 4 Bastok fame and level 2 Jeuno fame. (I'm not so sure about Sandy fame, I don't travel there often and I'm trying to level to 30, so no plans to travel there in the NEAR future ^^;;).

If I do this quest a lot (which I *HAVE*, because 500g per 10 minutes sounds pretty darn good to me for playing an FFXI version of "Concentration"), where does this fame build up? Jeuno (because it's from Kazham TO Jeuno) or Kazham (because the quest originates there)?

Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank You!

It raises your Kazham (Outlands) fame. Each of the four airship docks that schedules flights to Jeuno has an NPC to start the quest. Each city's version of the quest counts as 1 unique quest for that area, and is repeatable.

The easiest way to check which place's fame is raised is in your completed quests history. 'A Discerning Eye (Kazham)' shows up in the 'Outlands: Completed Quests' tab.

The breakdown
# Jun 25 2004 at 11:00 PM Rating: Excellent
For those of you attempting this quest to make money, let me break it down.

Airship rides last 3 minutes. Sitting around waiting for the airship to take off takes 2 minutes, so 5 minutes total, and you make two runs, Jeuno to Kazham & Kazham to Jeuno (so, a round trip). Doing the quest on Kazham to Jeuno nets you the 500g (assuming you getit right). So, a round trip lasts 10 minutes, and nets you 500g. Therefore, 2 trips gets you 1000g, and takes 20 minutes, which means 3000g for 3 round trips, and 1 hour.

10 hours? 30,000g. 100 hours? 300,000g. Spend a week and a half, doing this quest from lunch until 10, and you've made yourself 300,000g. If you push it and play 14 hours a day, you can do it a week (give or take an hour).

Now, for some tips.

1) Memorize the style and colour of the EQUIPMENT. Head, body, hands, legs, and feet. I've done this loads, and I'm yet to see any two passengers whose only difference was the hair. Memorize the equipment. That's the biggest tip. Even just quickly. Something like "Okay, red hat, robe-y thing, some mage-y gloves, a subligar, and some kyahan. Check" you will get it every time. Remembering the hair style can be helpful if you're worried about getting it done in time (which there is no problem not doing, by the way), as it lets you instantly disqualify people, however, the same thing applies to every piece of equipment as well.

2) Memorize the locations of the passengers. There's one in the room you spawn in, 3 in the captain guy's area, 2 on deck, one underneath the cover at the back, and one up by Oslan or whatever his name is. Get a line down. Check the guy in the first room, run into the captain's area and check the 3 there, then up the stairs, to the guy at the front. Then head to the back, checking the guy in the middle on the way. Pass below the guy up top, and then around and see the one at the back. That's everyone, and it takes no time at all.

And that's it, really. Not much to it. Remember, memorize the equipment, and get the line down, and this is a cinch.

Happy discerning!

Disabled or Broken
# Jun 03 2004 at 10:58 PM Rating: Default
It seems as though this quest has been disabled, I have done it many times to include while the airship is taking off. I went to do it today and Swift only says that he is in charge of looking for suspicious characters entering Kazham.

Edit: I am a liar, or at least mistaken. I fell in the water in port Windurst and ended up at the airship dock after standing under the airship when it took off. Anyway I have the Windurst equivilant quest and I am going to have to find a way to clear this up myself.

If you accept the quest and either fail to make it onto the Airship or forget to talk to a passenger, the quest will be disabled until you talk to the same quest giver again.

He should say something about having to leave the item with the airship authorities instead, and you should be able to get the quest again after that.

This quest is simple.. just study the hat closely *colors and whatnot*
Ive done this like 15-20 times at least *I travel a lot* and have only messed up twice
If it doesn't look like the passenger is wearing a hat look realllly closely, because there are times where there is only like 1/4th an inch of bandana showing
If you do this quest enough times *im guessing 10-15* your title becomes "Very Discerning Individual"
If you can't find the right Passenger
# Mar 11 2004 at 11:40 PM Rating: Decent
This quest has a twist.

One time I couldn't find the right passenger, and while I was running around looking at everyone, the ship arrived and I missed my chance. I continued on to my final destination. On the way back, the NPC who usually gave me this quest said he was "looking out for suspicious people arriving". All the passengers on the airship expressed concern about shady travellers.

If you don't deliver the Dropped Item, you won't be able to do the quest again until you return it to the NPC who gave it to you (has to be the same city). He thanks you for your help and says he "will hand the item over to the airship authorities". Talk to him again and you'll get the quest like normal.
Passengers

I have found passengers in the fillowing locations:

1 - Cabin you start in
2 - out by the door you entered the airship on
3 - in the pilots cabin (right side)
4 - 4 or 5 standing near the rails or easily visable on the main deck
5 - 1 up in the bow of the airship
6 - 1 up on the lookout cabin
7 - on the deck behind the look out cabin by the stern

So far I have been right 3 of 5 times... 1 time the passenger had 2 rings on her ponytails not 1, the other I messed up the feather in the cap had a red tip, it was not pure yellow... other wise they were identical... look close.

The quest starters, one for each airship city (the quest is only available going to Jeuno, not from it):
* Eddy in Port San d'Oria at H-6
* Pygmalion in Port Windurst at M-7
* Grin in Port Bastok at G-7
* Swift in Kazham at H-7

There are usually around 8 different "Passenger" mobs on the airship, although that can vary. You have to find the one who looks identical to the picture shown when you get the quest; make a note of the hair (color of hat, if any, and such), gloves and boots/shoes on the passenger, as those are the areas most likely to be unique.

if you have time to kill while waiting for a party up in kazham, this is a good way to do it. as long as you dont leave the dock you will only have to pay the 200 gil fee once and can do the quest as often as you want. just talk to swift (on the dock) and get on board. claim your 500gil reward and a bit of fame. get back on and head back to kazham, rinse and repeat.
Discerning Eye (San D'Oria)
# Mar 02 2004 at 9:02 PM Rating: Decent
I think this must be one of the new quests from the Feb. update. I found it the other day and was going to send in an e-mail about it as I didn't see it listed here on the site (an invaluable resource I might say).

The quest giver's name in San D'Oria is Eddy. You can't miss him as you're on the way to the dock.

I gave the "Dropped Item" to the first guy I saw and I got 500 gil. After that I saw a zillion other very similar looking guys and I wasn't sure if I did the right thing. I think maybe that was just a consolation prize. If anyone gets anything else let us know.
