Battle Notes

To begin, trade 50 Beastmen Seals to Shami at (H-8) in Port Jeuno in order to obtain the Rare/Ex item Comet Orb. Upon receiving the orb, make your way to the Balga's Dais zone located in the Giddeus dungeon.

Be advised that only three players can enter the battlefield, that their levels will be capped at level 50, and that there is a 30 minute time limit that starts the moment the orb trader enters the battlefield.

Upon entering the battlefield, you will find three treasure chests (Large Box, Medium Box, and Small Box) in the center of the room. When one chest is opened, the other two will disappear.

  • There is a 33% chance that you will choose a chest that, when opened, will result in completing the bcnm, and your party will receive the treasure pool from the chest.

  • There is a 66% chance that the chest you open will transform into a Mimic, and in order to complete the bcnm, the mimic will have to be defeated.

Strategies

The most common strategy in doing this BCNM is to utilize the roulette method, which is basically just to choose one chest and hope that luck is on your side, since popping the right chest will result in an instant win. If a mimic is spawned, the player will either try escaping using a Warp Cudgel, a Scroll: Instant Warp, or the Warp I spell, or, if using the method of going in on a level one job, just dying.

However, it is possible to beat the BCNM with a small group via killing the mimic spawned if the "lucky" chest isn't opened. However, this often requires planning and preparation ahead of time to win, as the group must go in with every intention of defeating a mimic should they fail to open the "lucky" chest.

Red Mage and Ninja method

A simple, straightforward method, though easily the longest one used, the Ninja will fight the mimic while the Red Mage cures and buffs the Ninja, while helping to enfeeble the mimic. The mimic's Death Trap ability as well as its Draw-in effect will often result in the Red Mage being hit a few times, so it is advised to keep Stoneskin, Blink, and Phalanx up as much as possible to survive.

Black Mage method

This method basically culminates a full contingent of Black Mages casting the Freeze Ancient Magic on the mimic soon after it spawns.

This BCNM is all luck, and i had it ^^
# Jun 12 2006 at 1:00 AM Rating: Decent
I had 300 seals, i seen this BCNM and thought i'd try it, first time go in, i picked the middle one, got the right one, i got Scroll of Quake - 400k and some cheap drk ring. i'd thought i'd test my luck again, i go in, get the right one, this time i got the Brd ring - 1.4mil and a ebony log, i go for a 3rd time, this time i hit gold, Astral ring ^.^ - 1.8mil. then my next 2 times after that were fails. So there is no pattern to this BCNM its either your lucky or your not.
Maybe

Don't you think it is possible to get all three as mimic because that would be a messed up.
O.O

When I read some people say they are 1/15 on that, that they lost 700+ beastmen seals WOW. Just WOW. You would think they understand it's not worth the risk but no they keep on wasting beastmen seals. I tried once. Lost once. Never tried again. Just do other bcnms jeez people <.<
chipped...

Of my poor bs savings I run to Giddeus with high hopes... only chipped off a rogue's ring (400k (-_-))

I'm now 1/2 and all I got was ~1.4k gil, Gold Ore and Medicine Ring... not really worth my efforts..

(btw, I picked the middle crate both times)

I attempted my third try at Treasures and it ended in Failure, making my record go to 1/3. First time I chose Small, and got RDM Ring and Quake, 2nd, Chose Mid box, Mimic, and this time I tried the Size rule (Being a Large Hume) and backed it up with the Large Box being the only one I haven't picked yet... Should have remained that way; It was indeed a mimic.

Perhaps it has something to do with what job/level you attempt the BCNM at. Only a guess. First times I went as my RDM (56), but going in as my BLU (21) this time. Next time I get 50 BS I will attempt Either Small or Medium again.

Chosen Box - Size - Job - Level - Results
Small Large 56 Red Mage Correct!
Medium Large 56 Red Mage Wrong!
Large Large 21 Blue Mage Wrong!

For a couple months, I played as a Hume BRD/WHM and lusted after a pair of Astrals. I went in tonight to this BCNM, my friend told me to "glitch the camera" and look inside the chests. There wasn't a bit of difference, so I just picked the Medium one.

Got Astral Ring, Guardian Ring, and 1066 gil.

Too bad I switched back to WAR. :P

last night i went in with 5SMN and myself NIN i ran up to the box. and was debating which one to chose. so i say hey what the heck pick the big box your being greedy so i assumed no luck there. med box i though wellll im med char thats the rumor which is a crock of ****. so i decided ill do a small box. so i smacked the box. to my great thoughts a mimic popped. well guess what! shadows were up i parry 2 hits in a row! evade the next then he takes a shadow. by that time the SMN's all 5 astral flow. 800-900 each. mimic wasnt dead -.- 1 smn had hate and stoneskin was up. others rested that smn died. goes after others i try for hate but nothing, then WHAM!!!! 4 more Astral Flow the mimic dies. to my supprice, BRD ring, Astral Ring, 2 darksteel ores, quake, and something else, i almost **** my pants!!! we defeated mimic, and he dropped all these drops. from my conclusion of this.
i am stronly a believer that if you beat mimic he drops random drops but VERY NICE ONES at that. and i believe picking mimic is better if you can defeat him, also another thing. to sum it up people say 1/3 chance to get something good welll yeah but you have a 2/3 chance for mimic. because there are 2 mimics i think. anyone every try an AoE on the boxes? im gonna try to see or have 3 of my buddies all shoot at same time. because boxes didnt disappear for a few seconds. . .

well i wanted to quit and still do but im sitting NICELY minstrels ring sells for a NICE SUM astral is at 3mil now woot ill be doing this again with my SMN crew.
Meh

I'm just curious to know if anyone has actually fought the mimic to win? Is it possible to beat it and if it is, what jobs are the best to use?

When my son first told me about this bcnm I just thought it was crazy: waste of seals and with a big risk. (And he got eaten very fast on his one and only try.) But since I had collected seals from the first day in Vanadiel (always have to check if things are useable before I throw them) and having some solobcnms in mind for later my stacks of seals started to grow (more than my moghouse could take). And when I started leveling Summoner I started to think an Astral-ring would be nice and maybe a light spirit pact (the only one I was missing of the pacts) and you could get both doing this! So I decided to gamble with one of my stacks, after a lot of persuasion.
It was either luck or size, according to what you read here, but I really didn't (and in some extent still don't) believe that the sucess of this was anything more than pure random, but it doesn't hurt to do whatever you can in your own favor, does it?
I went in as 20THF/WAR on a beautiful fullmoon-night. I had a 4-leaf mandragora bud and a wild rabbit tail and I put on my Rabbit charm (even if it doesn't have anything to do with luck I feel kind of lucky for getting it (after many many sleepless nights running around Ronfaure, yeah right: if those other things are lucky-charms this is my damn Never-give-up-but-continue-till-your-eyes-bleed-charm)). My son had bought a Millionairs desk but was disappointed with it so I borrowed that too (and now I'm gonna buy it from him!).
I was kind of nervous, had a macro for Perfect Dodge and a Instant Warp ready, but hesitated once I got there and helped some guys (italian I think) to do the dragon-mission-fight. Had to run all the way around. Forgot that you come out on the other side of the mountain, hmm. These guys were jokers and asked me if I was a gilbuyer. I had a few other things on: Travelers Mantle, Beestinger, Bounding Boots, everything else +1. Well I didn't feel like telling them how hard I have worked for every little piece, camping for weeks, hours and hours of solo-farming, so I let them believe that I had some highlevel helpers or whatever. Lol. Didn't want to scare them from the game.
I still got aggro from the strongest Yagudos so I barely got in again but just made it. This time I went in without hesitating and shot a bolt on the middle medium chest (being medium hume).
Drop! Yay! But not an Astral and no spirit pact but a Minstrel's ring and a Quake-scroll. Well, ok, I thought, I sell them and maybe the money would be enough for at least the scroll. Surprise! The bard-ring seems very rare and could give more gil even than an Astral here on Fairy. (But I am bad at those things, no patience for gil-dealing, and may sell it cheaper than that in the end, I believe more in a steady income.)
And well, from the beginning I had decided to try this twice, whatever happened, and I always stick to my plans.
Second time I picked the small chest (don't know why) and, w00t, now I got my Astral Ring plus a Platinum as a bonus.
Smilingly on my way to Jeuno!
Wow, this was easy o.O

After checking this page out yesterday, I decided to try this BCNM. I had enough beast coins to try this twice, in case I didn't get anything the first time. On my first run, I did what everyone else who wrote something about this did. I put up stoneskin and blink, then ran up to the chests and picked the medium chest (I have a medium character). Got it first try =D But only got Raise II (400K on Bahamut) and some ring that was only worth 8k.

I got another orb, went back and, recast my spells, and chose the large chest. Got it again. This time, with a ring for ranger (1k on my server) and an Astral Ring (2mil) =D

Now I'm pretty sure that I had done everything fast enough that there was probably no one that did this BCNM between the two times I did it. So I have 2 theories on this BCNM. It may be that it starts off (for the very first time done) as the chest that goes with your size, and every time you come back in (using your orb), it goes to the next (i.e.- medium, large, small, medium, etc.), or, maybe it is going in that same patern, but instead of each individual having that pattern, it goes through this pattern every single time anyone goes into this BCNM.

I wish I had more beast coins to figure this out =/

Went for T&T because a LS friend of mine had just tried it and died, and I had done it two times before and died each time... so why not give it a shot and probably make it three deaths, huh? Worth a shot at that astral ring.

Ran in (RDM43), all the buffs in the book, chainspell and warp ready to go. I spent a good minute just examining boxes, and there is definitely no discernable difference (and I am a very discerning individual). Picked the middle box for no particular reason, ended up winning! So the drum roll for the reward...

Ended up getting a reraiser and a sorcerer's ring. Immediately thought, "ugh, well, there goes 50 seals down the drain..." Checked the price on sorcerer's ring in Ragnarok, and the price is a healthy 2 mil+. Quite suprised and happy at the results.

I went and tried this BCNM today. Went by myself as a level 8 RNG incase i died. Used powders and oils to get to the burning circle. Traded it my orb, went in and popped the middle chest. Lucky me, walked out with an Astral Ring and a Platinum Ring, a nice 1.3mil for me. ^^

This is for those of u who want to do this quest and not die if u chose wrong... all u need is either a 46+BLM/23+BST OR a 36+BST/18+BLM. make sure u have jug pets... simply call ur pet make it attak the box (NOT you) and if it's wrong warp away ^^. Don't bother taking risks like puting up blink/stoneskin, this way u won't even have ne of the hate.

Might I remind you jug pets are BST only? There are many methods to get out safely, PLD Invincible, THF Perfect Dodge.. but all in all If you're not there to defeat a mimic if it happens to be one, just use a job you don't care about losing some EXP on.

True, the pet will stay alive long enough for you to bail out. Sure it's a waste of 50 seals if you happen to pick the wrong box but hey, it's not like Bst are short on seals usually ;P
this has absolutely nothing to do with size
# Apr 03 2006 at 11:11 AM Rating: Decent
it is an absolute fact that i have now spent a total of 750 beast seals on this. I am a small taru, that is another absolute fact. i am ONE out of FIFTEEN on this bcnm (i got some **** drk ring and Quake on the one win). it IS COMPLETELY random. The only one i have won on is the large box, but i have picked it a total of 5 times (losing FOUR times for those who can't do the math). i am ZERO of 5 on small, ZERO of 5 on medium. this does NOT mean it's the opposite of your size. this does NOT mean it is your size. just because you walked in once and won once, does not mean you figured out the secret to this one......here's the frickin secret: you have to be lucky.

yes, i carry the 3 luck items. no i do not eat them. no i have not bought a millionaire's desk. yes i sub thf. these things do not in anyway have anything to do with it either, in my opinion.

The entire time I've played this game, I've had minimal gil and less than optimal equipment. I decided to do this BCNM on a whim (after seeing a RDM60 friend fail it three times), just to test my luck. I even ran into one EP Yagudo on the way to the Burning Circle. Inside the circle, I spend two minutes carefully examing the boxes, then eventually decided to just grab the middle one. Bam, Astral Ring and Drake Ring. My WHM31 is a very happy camper, so is my upstart SMN.

I am a medium Mithra, but I don't know if that rumor is true.

Just did this today for the third time.
I am a large hume who has failed at this twice before. The previous two times I tried the medium and the small.
THIS time I decided to go with what some posters here are saying and pick according to my size:
Large box, picked up a Shinobi Ring and Platinum ore.

My GF and I both grabbed a comet orb last night and I went as 75 NIN and she was 75 WHM. We went in she put up stoneskin and I put up my utsusemi. Both naked of course.

I told her to set her menu on Teleport Vaz so we could port out quit and outpost back for second orb if mimic spawns. I think on it for minute then punch the large chest. I'm a Medium Hume. Get Astral Ring (1.6M) and Minstrel's Ring (2M).

We leave run back around and it's her turn to trade orb. She Trades her orb and same drill she puts up stoneskin and I do shadows and she is on her teleport marcro. I asked her which chest she wanted? She decided small and punch it and we have treasure again. This Time Sorcerers Ring (5M) and a Gold Ingot (100k).

Not bad pay for about 20 Mins of just running around.

BTW - She's a small mithra... I seriously doubt your size and chest size mean a darn thing in this... I think it randomly is one of the 3 chests and you have a 1/3 chance of getting the right one.
