Battle Notes

To begin, trade 50 Beastmen Seals to Shami at (H-8) in Port Jeuno in order to obtain the Rare/Ex item Comet Orb. Upon receiving the orb, make your way to the Balga's Dais zone located in the Giddeus dungeon.

Be advised that only three players can enter the battlefield, that their levels will be capped at level 50, and that there is a 30 minute time limit that starts the moment the orb trader enters the battlefield.

Upon entering the battlefield, you will find three treasure chests (Large Box, Medium Box, and Small Box) in the center of the room. When one chest is opened, the other two will disappear.

  • There is a 33% chance that you will choose a chest that, when opened, will result in completing the bcnm, and your party will receive the treasure pool from the chest.

  • There is a 66% chance that the chest you open will transform into a Mimic, and in order to complete the bcnm, the mimic will have to be defeated.

Strategies

The most common strategy in doing this BCNM is to utilize the roulette method, which is basically just to choose one chest and hope that luck is on your side, since popping the right chest will result in an instant win. If a mimic is spawned, the player will either try escaping using a Warp Cudgel, a Scroll: Instant Warp, or the Warp I spell, or, if using the method of going in on a level one job, just dying.

However, it is possible to beat the BCNM with a small group via killing the mimic spawned if the "lucky" chest isn't opened. However, this often requires planning and preparation ahead of time to win, as the group must go in with every intention of defeating a mimic should they fail to open the "lucky" chest.

Red Mage and Ninja method

A simple, straightforward method, though easily the longest one used, the Ninja will fight the mimic while the Red Mage cures and buffs the Ninja, while helping to enfeeble the mimic. The mimic's Death Trap ability as well as its Draw-in effect will often result in the Red Mage being hit a few times, so it is advised to keep Stoneskin, Blink, and Phalanx up as much as possible to survive.

Black Mage method

This method basically culminates a full contingent of Black Mages casting the Freeze Ancient Magic on the mimic soon after it spawns.

I'm currently 2/2 on this NM for the astral ring. I guessed right both times, as a low lvl bst each time (<15). The runs were about a month apart, but I went in as the large taru and picked the small box: fencer's ring and astral ring. Second time was minstrel's and astral rings, but picked the large box this time. Apparently, it seems to be random and box size doesnt matter.
BS!!

I tried this recently when I was bored on my main character and my brother's old character.

Small Mithra -> small box -> YAY!
Medium Hume -> medium box -> YAY!

Unfortunately the drops both times were practically worthless. ; ;

According to my luck in this area, I don't even know why I tried. I guess I thought that maybe I'd actually be able to be successful in a BCNM for once.

I'm that guy that gets to use the orb on the only unsuccessful run in a bcnm fight. Or I'm that guy that gets to use the orb on the first try which always seems to fail. This has happened over 10 times.

So why did I try this? I don't know. But my luck didn't change. I did the "your height -> mimic height" thing and lost. there goes 50 seals...there goes exp down...why do I have this type of luck?

Had 50 seals, was having a crappy day. Saw the BST LV50 ring and saw that it goes for a measly 3k on the AH. Wanted one, none up on AH, so... seeing as how there are so many other nice drops, figured I'd try my luck.

Went as 54WHM/BLM. Buffed up with stoneskin and blink, made Warp macro. I'm a small taru, so I chose the small box (after much deliberation... I tend to have bad luck when it comes to things like this). Almost hit my warp macro, realized I'd won.

Drops: Drake Ring, Astral Ring.

I have 2 Astrals already from soloing BCNM20 on my Hume character, so I'll sell this one. However, there are 8 on the AH so... fooey. ;3 They're going down in value. Was hoping for the Sorcerer's Ring but dayum! Won't be pushing my luck to try again. ;3 Good luck!

I've done this BC about half a dozen times now, and have posted a couple of my ideas already. And so far both were wrong. I am unable to discern a pattern, and as far as i can tell picking same size box on first try increases chance of succes, but doesnt guarantee. and after first attempt it's pure chance. GL everyone.
surprised...
# Feb 19 2006 at 3:43 AM Rating: Decent
Wow... I was seriously skeptical about this whole box size having something to do with character size but I figured why not try- worth a shot, eh?

Small hume, picked small box and no mimic o_O;;
(didn't get what I wanted but hey got a 400k ring which is better than nothing.)

Second time tried medium though a mimic.. ;[ Oh well still won once~ So I say if it's your first time go ahead and try the theory about character size and box- it doesn't hurt and has actually worked more than not it seems~
wtf

if i'm reading these replies right, then char body size = size chest you choose....large galka > large chest....why the **** do i keep getting the ******* mimic....4 goddamn times now and i've tried different chests

Lets say I pick the wrong box and spawn a mimic. If I have 5 other people doing this with me and we beat the mimic, would I get treasure?

I was 51 when I did this. (Quite awhile back).

Alright, I figured I needed an Astral Ring for my White Mage some day so I looked into my inventory and safe.

197 seals. 3 shy of 4 runs. So, I went with some higher level friends for about 3hrs got 5 more seals and decided to give my luck a try.

1st) Got an Astral and Ronin
2nd) Mimic
3rd) Quake and another Ronin
4th) Astral and Wyvern

Small Mithra and I picked Small on 1st and 3rd try. 4th I chose the medium. The Mimic I chose the large

Did this BC 2x last night. BLM went first, he's a medium sized tarutaru. he picked medium box, got Freeze:scroll, Guardians ring. About 15k collectively. PLD went second. Large sized hume, picked large box. Got astral ring, and kampfer ring. astral worth 2.8m on shiva, kampfer about 5k.

Not positive but i believe that size of character is first pick, opposite size of character 2nd pick, then the third size. I will test again this weekend and post results later.

lol good question

i did this again and picked large box, this time was mimic. my new pattern is...1st pick go with same size, 2nd pick (even if first was med) pick med, 3rd pick pick the one you have not tried, 4th repeat process.....again i will keep testing, my 2nd should have been med, my 3rd i will try the small...will post results later.

Well i ran in after reading this, i am pretty sure i am a Small tarutaru, so i run up attack the small chest and get a mimic.. I know for sure i am not a large, being in was in a party wirh a taru today and was smaller tham him and i know i would not have picked large, i have almost 150 more seals and no time to organize runs with parties, so i might as well try again, i just hope i don't die this time ><
The best BCNM lol
# Jan 15 2006 at 12:54 PM Rating: Decent
omg this is the best bcnm on ff11. lol. I did this bcnm last night, hoping i would get some excitement from a mimic. Well i go in on lights day, 3 ethers, 2 yag drinks, and a steamed crab. I go in as smn also btw. Well i go in buff up (blink, aquaveil, protect, etc) then i rest, and while im restng i rememberd in the beginning of the game that we had to choose a size: small, medium, and large. So i go in summon carby and have him attack the small chest. I thought it was a mimic at first but...no it wasnt lol. I got a astral ring and a trackers ring w/o any fighting. So to rap this all up, i think the chest that is right the first time you go in is the size you chose in the beginning of the game. Well gl to all you out there doing this awesome bcnm ^^

Astral ring sells for 3.7mil and the trackers ring sells for 1-2k on phoenix server. not sure if im keeping the astral ring or not.

Well I just did this as a level 30 paladin. walked in, picked the middle chest, and bam, astral and rogues ring. luckily, i have my character on Asura, home of the worst economy in the game. I never thought id praise it but I did just this one time, astral selling for 3.3 and rogue ring for 350k.

My friend has done this 5 times though, and is now 5 for 5, never had to fight the mimic, and he picks a chest at random, and has tried all 3, and neither of us pay attention to the moon or anything like that, i believe its just dumb luck.
easy

I may be the luckiest guy ever.....

1st attempt, small chest, Raise II (Boooooo)

2nd attempt, small chest Astral!!!!! (Yayyy)

3rd attempt, small chest Sorcerers Ring (Booooooo...... or so I thought, checked ah and 1.3 mill!!!) Yayyyyyyy!!!

I swear by the luck items, Im not after a debate on this, I have the space so I choose to carry them, also got the mill desk.

Just as a point of interest though I get nice claim rates on beasty seals and kindreds in ptys. one pty I got 6/7 beast seals...... a friend (This is NOT my maths) worked this out as a 1 in 55,987 chance...... may have just been my night I guess!

Go to Giddeus, the zone to the BC is easy to find, just run to the bottom-left of the first map. You don't need to drop down any holes or hug any ledges or anything like that. I went in the fight as WHM/SMN, and I selected the small box on the left. It was a mimic, so I'm 0/1 now; however, escaping was easy as WHM/SMN. I was concerned because death = lvl-down for me. Equip warp cudgel when you enter, cast stoneskin/blink/aquaveil/protect/haste, call Avatar, and go for it. The mimic landed 6 hits before my cudgel activated but all were absorbed. #1 Levi (died on first hit), #2 shadow, #3 shadow, #4 stoneskin, #5 stoneskin (wore off), #5 shadow) so I was easily able to disenage and macro warp cudgel before I took any damage. Stoneskin wore on 2nd hit and the mimic did double-attack once, so be ready for your buffs to wear fast.
This BCNM is basically a solo 50-seal gamble unless you want to assemble a pty to actually fight it. If you dont want to die soloing it, just stack buffs and bring a pet and you should have time to get out if you pick the wrong chest. I'm going to try again later so if I get it right this time I'll edit this post :D
Good luck everyone!

Edit: Ok, ran it again and won. I choose the middle box. Got crap though...Ronin Ring and Mithril Ore. Overall, if you have seals to burn go for it and cross your fingers for that Astral, but don't be suprised if you burn 50 or more seals and don't have a lot to show for it! XD

# Nov 03 2005 at 12:25 AM Rating: Decent
1st try astral (still use it) and darksteel ore (medium chest)
2nd try quake for 500k 8) and Trackers ring for 1k(medium chest)
3rd try Darkstell ore and tamers ring 3k(I tried the small)

whaa whaa whaaaaaaaa...

I got what I needed and I'd rather do a BC60 for some real drops.
Currently:saving my seals.
ripped off
# Oct 28 2005 at 1:27 AM Rating: Decent
I've done this a total of 4 times on my own now. found the crate 3 out of 4 times and have been jipped 2 of those times... worthless drops for the risk involved...

1st time armory crate
--- I got an astral 1.3 mil
--- dragoon ring 5k
2nd time mimic
3rd time armory crate
--- about 1500 gil
--- petrified log 17k
--- ronin ring 1k
4th time armory crate
--- about 1500 gil
--- warrior ring 1k
--- Raise II 70k

My conclusion would be there is 1 Mimic, 1 crap crate 1 good crate, after talking to people that do it, I'd just say I got ripped off royally, and that there's likely 2 mimics.

From what I have found, the Center chest has better chance of being the armory crate, matter of fact, 2/4 of my times it was the right chest

*edit: stupid typo's

If I'm not mistaken by the description at the top, if you kill the mimic you get the treasure. Okay, so go in with a party of 50s and kill the mimic if you dont get the right chest and dont waste your seals. If you just warp out and call it a loss...it is.
It just seems ludicrous to me that some people complain that this can be a waste. Well it can be...if you try to solo it.

but the mimic is known to be an IT+++++ monster, and no strategy on killing has ever been derived to my knowledge. It would be very tough
