Battle Notes

To begin, trade 50 Beastmen Seals to Shami at (H-8) in Port Jeuno in order to obtain the Rare/Ex item Comet Orb. Upon receiving the orb, make your way to the Balga's Dais zone located in the Giddeus dungeon.

Be advised that only three players can enter the battlefield, that their levels will be capped at level 50, and that there is a 30 minute time limit that starts the moment the orb trader enters the battlefield.

Upon entering the battlefield, you will find three treasure chests (Large Box, Medium Box, and Small Box) in the center of the room. When one chest is opened, the other two will disappear.

  • There is a 33% chance that you will choose a chest that, when opened, will result in completing the bcnm, and your party will receive the treasure pool from the chest.

  • There is a 66% chance that the chest you open will transform into a Mimic, and in order to complete the bcnm, the mimic will have to be defeated.

Strategies

The most common strategy in doing this BCNM is to utilize the roulette method, which is basically just to choose one chest and hope that luck is on your side, since popping the right chest will result in an instant win. If a mimic is spawned, the player will either try escaping using a Warp Cudgel, a Scroll: Instant Warp, or the Warp I spell, or, if using the method of going in on a level one job, just dying.

However, it is possible to beat the BCNM with a small group via killing the mimic spawned if the "lucky" chest isn't opened. However, this often requires planning and preparation ahead of time to win, as the group must go in with every intention of defeating a mimic should they fail to open the "lucky" chest.

Red Mage and Ninja method

A simple, straightforward method, though easily the longest one used, the Ninja will fight the mimic while the Red Mage cures and buffs the Ninja, while helping to enfeeble the mimic. The mimic's Death Trap ability as well as its Draw-in effect will often result in the Red Mage being hit a few times, so it is advised to keep Stoneskin, Blink, and Phalanx up as much as possible to survive.

Black Mage method

This method basically culminates a full contingent of Black Mages casting the Freeze Ancient Magic on the mimic soon after it spawns.

I did this BCNM yesterday. I picked the small chest(my friend has done this BCNM many times and he says everytime he picks the small chest he is right and gets something however sucky it is). I Came away with a scroll of Raise 2(160-200k jeuno AH) and a platinum ring(95k jeuno AH).

I went as my nin just so if i picked the wrong bow i could mijin gakure and not lose exp(i was too lazy and poor to get powders and oils to get a lvl 1 job there).

I just did this BCNM as my 24 DRK. It's Lightningday, I'm male Elvaan (not sure that that matters, but just going for completeness), I chose the medium chest, and didn't have to fight.

I got:

1 Astral Ring
1 Slayer Ring
1611 gil

Uhhh... You're very wrong. The thing is that you were doing BCNM40 in a PARTY, so the gil is divided among the people. This can be soloed, and does not require a job that is wanted for other group BCNMs. If you don't value your seals, this is a good choice.

This BCNM is the biggest waste of Beastmen's Seals if I've ever seen one.
I was in a PT that did 2.3 million in gil 5 runs.

200 total beastseals used = 2.3 million gil

bcnm40 worms turn 8)

has anyone fought the mimic? is it a true level 50 fight as hard as other bcnm's or is it impossible to do...

I tried this tonight. Took some silent oil and prism powder that I had left from my trip to get the utsusemi scroll. Changed my job to lvl 1 and sneak/invis'd my way through giddeus. I chose the left chest and it was correct. I walked away with a Trackers Ring (1K Value) and a Scroll of Quake (200K Value)

I tried it again 2 hours later and picked the middle. It was wrong, so I died. But not a bad chunk of cash for a 2 hours worth of running around.
I love this

I did this a few days ago as a BLM32, and figured I'd get all the chests. I cast firaga on the medium chest and got kicked completely out of FFXI and POL. when I restarted I got the "you didn't log out properly" message, and when I got back into FFXI, i was dead. So yeah, using an AoE to select your chest is not a good idea.

Just for the record, YOU DO NOT LOSE THE ORB BUT IT IS WORTHLESS. Throw it away. I'm sick of seeing you post I DIDNT LOSE MY ORB ILL DO IT AGAIN SOON LOLOLOL etc. You cannot reuse an orb regardless of the outcome of a BC.

The Orb is not Useless Trade it in to the guy you got it fro and he gives you Jeuno Fame.

You get fame for just particapating in BCNMs. I imagine you get more fame for turning in your orb. I know this because before I did 6 worm BCNMs in 1 day, I did not have my mahogany bed quest, and I could not get Gobbie bag 3. After completing them I a) Got the Moggle bed quest on a wednesday
b) Got the gobby bag 3 and 4 quest (haven't finished 4 so I don't know if I can do 5 yet:)

Now, when I did this, I only had my orb (which I did turn in when I was done). So I did it 5 times w/ the other pt members (I was the only 1 to open the chest:) thereby the only one to "Complete" the BCNM fight (since I was a thf I could run back and we could restart the fight faster while mages healed).

Anyways, it appears that there is fame for just completing it. I will not for a second discount the fame for turning in the orb(I always turn mine in).

Hi guys. Haven't tried it yet, but had a thought, wanted to see if anyone else had tried it yet.
I was reading in another area (Garliage Citadel section) about an area where there can be three coffers, but two are Mimics and the third is the real deal, in the description for that they say to have a ranger or beast use widescan to make sure that the one you are at is the coffer and not a Mimic. T
his got me thinking. Has anyone ever used widescan on this BCNM to see if the two mimic's pop up or not? It would be a sweet little guaranteed win if it worked that is for sure! If I have time I will try this tonight and post. If anyone already has info on this, it would be greatly appreciated!

UPDATE
Unfortunately, there is no map function in the BCNMs so no widescan. On the plus side, I went with the small chest and got lucky. Astral Ring, Sorcerer's ring and enough gil to cover the transportation costs. Net result over 540,000gil. Not a bad return on 50 seals if I do say so myself!

Actual Mimic fight

Unicorn Server

Out of curiosity I wanted to actually see if a party could beat the Mimic and take the treasure. Being that there was only one monster, and there are no note to the contrary a few LS members and I assumed that it was a 3 person battle. We went with:

WHM/BLM
NIN/WAR
DRK/WAR

all of which were level 50. When we went in the first time we picked the small box and got a platinum ore and a Conjurer's Ring (~19k and ~10k respectively)

The Second time we went in we picked the large box and pulled a mimic. Pre-Battle we all had our food (Orange Kuchen, Tuna Sushi, etc.) and buffs (Prot III, Shell II, and Haste) on.

The NIN tanked it and found that the mimic missed a surprisingly high percent of the time. The DRK hit for ~47 points of damage when he connected. By the time we died the mimic was half down and the WHM's MP was also about half down. The big problem was the WHM kept getting drawn in - which interrupted casting and caused massive damage. With a little practice I think a similar party could manage it.

The poison was also pretty hard to deal with because the mimic will poison and stun the party on occasion ensuring that a lot of Poison damage is done by the time the WHM can remove it.

One quetion though - This battle has a 30 min limit - is it actually a 6 person battle?

If you bring a poison potion and drink it, you`ll induce yourself with a smaller poison [1 HP/tic] and the mimic`s poison will not effect you.

I have NOT done this BCNM... but that`s how we do it vs. Serket

Middle Chest. (Medium)

Saeriel wins: Tamer's Ring, Platinum Ore.

Total Loot = 30k at best. Terrible.

But at least I didn't die.
Give it a try

I tried this today.

I went in, put protect, shell, blink, stoneskin, aquaviel and all that lovely stuff on. Made myself ready to cast warp then went up to crates.

I selected the small crate and cast banishga on it. I did damage to all three, and they all vanished. They were replaced with a armoury crate where the small one was. More than likely I chose the right crate, but if you were worried you'll always get the mimic using AoE, I can now confirm you won't.

Now all is left to prove that even if you do pick the wrong crate and use AoE you won't get mimic. (Dreaming on)

edit - I forgot to tell you my drops. Platinum ring (50K) and darksteel ore (8K)
