Summary

Walkthrough

You must first complete Gullible's Travels and Even More Guillible's Travels.

Once you have received the scent from Even More Gullible's Travels, talk to the Opo-opo on the airship dock (Lulupp), then talk to Vuih Stecoppah. You must trade the following items to the corresponding Opo-opos in the correct order:

1. Lulupp - Bkn. Mithran Rod (Port Windurst/Fish.Guild)
2. Kukupp - Workbench (Woodworking/Amateur)
3. Mumupp - Ten of Coins (Outer Horutoto Ruins Mob:Ten of Coins)
4. Roropp - Sands of Silence (Castle Zvahl Baileys Mob:Demon Magistrate, Demon Chancellor)
5. Popopp - Wandering Bulb (FeiYin Mob:Utukku)
6. Bubupp - Giant Fish Bones (Temple of Uggalepih Mob:Tonberry Stalker)
7. Tatapp - Blackened Toad (Sea Serpent Grotto Mob:Brook Sahagin)
8. Kakapp - Wyvern Skull (Ifrits Cauldron Mob:Hurricane Wyvern)
9. Lalapp - Ancient Salt (Quicksand Caves Mob:Sand Digger)
10. Nenepp - Lucky Egg (The Boyahda Tree Mob:Knight Crawler)
The last 5 items (except Blackened Toad) on this list are Rare/Ex, so you can not purchase them from Auction House.

If you trade the correct items in order, the Opo-opos will make you their king and you will receive the Opo-opo Crown.

This is from the wiki entry on the Personal Hygiene quest:

Quest Completed Too Soon

* If you complete this quest before starting The Opo-opo and I and need to reapply the scent, it is still possible to do so.
* The Rafflesia flowers can be respawned by killing the Jammer Leeches. For each Jammer Leech killed, one flower will respawn.

So you have to kill the jammer leeches to be able to reapply the scent to flag the quest again. Here is the link to the full page: http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/Personal_Hygiene

Breaking The Mithrian Rod
# Dec 10 2006 at 5:27 PM Rating: Decent
To break the Mithrian Rod, I found that it was a very quick fix to take the sinking minnow lure and head to The Boyahda Tree, since you have to go there anyway. In any of the ponds there, we did it at (D-4), just fish and wait for the !!! Impossible message and try and reel it in, it'll break every time. I broke 2 rods here within 5 minutes while I spent hours on the boat trying to break them. I had no fishing gear on, and fishing still is 19.3. Good Luck ^^

just to make it more clear, if not enough.
The order post here is correct, and btw its right the same order as they appear in widescan.
so take a look at it to be safe.

To the question of those who do not recall which Opo-opos they have given items:

If you have already given an item to an Opo-opo (correctly), they will greet you with "Opopopopo! Opo-opo! Oppo! Oppo-opo!" and a bow. Those you have not given an item to will ask you a question w/ a prompt.

Hopefully this will help some people :)
Lets clear up some questions...

Ok, I hope this helps ->

1. Can you leave Khazam once you have started trading items to the Opo-monkeys?

*Yes, you can leave Khazam after turning in items. They do not have to be turned in on the same day or anything. However, they do need to be turned in order. The order that is listed on this website (right up there) is correct. Don't forget to have four inventory slots open once you turn in the final item (Lucky Egg) because you'll recieve the crown and three pamamas.

2. Where is Vuih Stecoppah's location?

*Well, she only shows up in the cutscenes as far as I know. She mentions that you should come and talk to her if you need help or something during the first cutscene where the game forces you to speak with her. However, she doesn't mention where she is. I've tried to locate her with widescan and I she isn't in Khazam.

3. Does it matter what order you trade it in?

*Yes, yes, and more yes. The order matters. You must talk to the monkey and hear what it wants before trading any items. And if you are having trouble finding these monkeys, sub RNG or BST and use widescan.

4. Why am I getting the message "Opo...opo..." or something?

*Because you traded out order or you are trading the wrong item. Also, make sure you are trading the right item. I've seen people get bent out of shape because they are trading Firesand instead of Sands of Silence.

5. I turned in all of the items and got the final cutscene and they ask me "Opo-opo? Opi-opi?". What do I choose?

*I've read that it doesn't matter because you will still get the crown either way. I went with "Opo-opo?" because in their language "opo" is a positive thing while "opi" is negative.

6. How do I know if I turned in the right item?

The monkey will praise you with a bunch of "Opo-opo!Opopopo!" kinda stuff and bow to you politely.

I might add more if needed, but please feel free to add more information. Thanks a bunch and good luck getting the coolest looking hat in the game!

mithran rod
# May 08 2006 at 6:44 AM Rating: Decent
The post below is correct. Break the rod by casting off of the south cliff in Qufim Island using sliced cod. You will need about level 25 fishing though.
The fish you are after will come with 3 exclamation points and be very difficult at 25+4 to pull up. The first one of these you wear down is just about guaranteed to break your mithran rod.

If you want the easiest way to break a Mithran Fishing rod. Have a friend who is leveling bonecraft make some fly lures (trust me they will be happy to get rid of them) for you. Step out to East Ronfaure and move down to the river and fish. The target is actually Arrowwood Log which the Rod will snap 75% of the time (100% when I tried it). You might catch a couple Cheval Salmon or Shining Trout but that Arrowwood Log will ruin your rod fast.

Hope this helps.

Ok well heres how my story with this demon pole works =P

for a few hours i was convinced i could break it myself... ( i had never had trouble with unfortunate things like breaking a rod or sometin)

so i tried fishing in the Sea Serpent Grotto Lake, no avail

then i tried fishing on the selbina/mhaura fairy for one trip... no avail

a friend was telling me that i need about 80 fishing skill to break the rod but at the time it didnt make sense to me. (wouldnt it be best to break a rod as zero fisherman, that was my thoughts)

however, your fishing skill does infact help/kill ur chances of breaking a rod in certain locations... like the ferry... heres how

for the most part, the fish that break mithran rods on the ferry are the legendary fishes... in order to have the greatest chance of breaking the rod... u NEED to reduce the stamina of the fish as if u were gonna catch it... down to zero... otherwise 99% of the time ull get a regular line break. at lower LV fisherman u wont be able to reduce the stamina of the fish enough to "reel it in" for the break

im not saying u cant break a mithran rod on a arrowwood log or w/e with max stamina... all im sayin is ur chances are less likely

as 37 fisherman i didnt have much luck with breakin at all... however a guy with 96+fishing gear told me he'd break it for free for me ^^;

first cast, boom bam crack gone... thank you sir ^^;

just my 2 cents, i wish i woulda known some of this info earlier

Really easy for me, had level 0 fishing skill. Grabbed a Mithran rod from the fishing guild and a stack of little worms and headed out to Kazham. Fished up maybe three Pamtam Kelps and then rod broke. While it would have been nice to fish up something worthwhile, it didn't take me long to do.

Now for a ten of coins...200k on Shiva *sigh*...

Well, based on some of the posts here, I've been lucky. I got the sands of silence and the wandering bulb last night with my husband and a friend who also needed the items. (He got his crown last night. {Congratulations} Bigby!)

I couldn't find a broken rod on the AH and besides, it was going for 100K on Odin and, for that price, it reminded me that I like to do some things from scratch {/grin}.

I was fishing lvl 1 and I hopped on the ferry with some crayfish balls and tried my luck. Several hours, .5 skillups, a bronze box, a lost shrimp lure and several caught nebimonites later, I still had one intact rod.

My husband, who is fishing lvl 26, tried for three days straight to break that rod on the ferry. .1 skillups (what is up with the fishing leveling?), a bronze box, lots of caught fish and some aspririn later, he still had one intact rod. At least he doesn't curse out loud anymore about losing his catch under the updated fishing system.

We decide to go to Sea Serpent Grotto to get our Damp Scrolls for the NIN scroll quest. We've each got a Mithran Rod now and crayfish balls. I'm now fishing level 2. :P The lake is located at J-12.

Fourth cast, I get a Damp Scroll (40K each on Odin). Run to Norg to list it. Meanwhile, my husband, Deanmond, is catching and "regretfully" releasing Damp Scrolls right and left. It seems that mid-20's fishing level is ideal for catching Damp Scrolls, or he was just incredibly lucky. But I digress.

In less than a half hour, I had broken my rod (you get a message about the catch being too heavy, but no other indication until you try to fish again). Dean breaks his less than five minutes later. He doesn't want the crown, so he sold his broken rod (100K - 25K cost of rod = 75K profit minus fees).

So in about 2 hours, we both got the chest keys and the Grotto map, fished one set of Damp Scrolls to sell and one set to finish the quest, and broke both mithran rods. Good times and not bad gil considering all we got done.

For you Clue fans, it was Stravia in Sea Serpent Grotto (at J-12) with the crayfish balls. Fishing level doesn't make a difference. Good luck, everyone. I hope you have as much luck as we did ^^.

# Jan 06 2006 at 11:13 PM Rating: Decent
My perma and I have been slowly gathering pieces for this crown (since our bard needs it anyway we all decided to get one... there's 5 of us)

So far everything has went fairly well... with some outside help we got the drop on the ten of coins... about 1 per hour. Sands of silence were impossible for us to get for some reason... 0 in 1 1/2 hours... but we bought on AH for 4k each afterwards XD.

The real @#$% was the Wandering bulb... only 3 of us got the drop the other 2 decided to camp AH and pay 120k+ for it... we were there fighting uttukus for 1 1/2 hours with THII + about 6 hours with 2 TH1s ... 3 bulbs ... what a nightmare. x.x Just figured I'd tell anyone expecting a quick in/out operation... not happening

I was so lucky and got the items within..like a 2 day span with the help of some friends. I got every rare/ex + the bulb and ten of coins card within the first 20 mins of searching I'd say.

All I have left is to break a mithran rod, and its driving me INSANE.

Good luck to all becoming king ! :)

just wondering, what if you start up the quest and a year after the quest has been started want to finish this off. this should be without a doubt, no problem. my main issue is what happens if you don't recall the last item you traded in? is there a way to find out where you left off? like talking to an npc and getting a clue? i'll reply if i find anything on this for others future help.

if you trade in the wrong order you do have to start all over again and you don't get the items back. You'll need to get them all over again. I just did it by accident on the second last item and I lost everything.

so don't be an idiot like me and make sure you get them in the right order :P

I accidentally skipped an Opo-opo (Bubupp, Gigant Fish Bones) while doing this, and tried to hand the fish bones to the next one on the list (Tatapp, Blackened Toad). Tatapp refused to accept it, and I was able to find Bubupp and trade in the Fish Bones, followed by the Blackened Toad to Tatapp.

I have not yet finished the last two items on the quest, and it doesn't completely answer your question (what would happen if I tried to give Blackened Toad to Tatapp, thus giving the right item in wrong order, rather than wrong item).

Me and a friend of mine recently finished this quest, and i must say it's the must grueling quest i have yet to come across - at least for an impatient taru like me =P I thought i'd describe my experience with the quest and hope it helps with a few questions or so.

We both had our Lucky Eggs already from just messing around fighting Knight Crawlers camping Aquarious one day, you can easily get this partying in Boyahda Tree levels 53-57 i guess. You can eat it so careful =\

The Wyvern Skull i thought we'd have the most difficulty in getting, found out just the difficult part was just gathering people willing to go and actually getting to camp. Ifrit's Cauldron is pretty intimidating, but if people know what to do and where to go (plus carry prism powders and silent oils please!) it's not such a bad place. We took a party consisting of 5 level 70+ members a NIN, WHM, BLM, BST, and BRD. We got up to camp around H-6/H-7 I-6/I-7 on 3rd map and found the only real safe spot to pull Hurricane Wyverns and fight them... should be a ledge where a raptor and a bomb is in the back, so i guess watch your back and keep your distance. I'm so glad our BST friend could come a long cause this is somewhat of a must need, they would charm Nightmare Bats and cast invis since BST can sic their pets and no come un-invis'd. So they'd pull back a wyvern to camp safely. Vouivre was also up at the time but we didn't really bother with the NM no true sight or anything. Nice to have the ninja or any tank face the wyvern away from mages cause of radiant breath if you have never fought wyverns before his move can scare pretty much anyone - i suggest mags carry echo drops with them for radiant breath, and for BLMs light nuke please - don't want to get a lot of hate with wyverns =P The skulls dropped fairly easy i thought they'd had bad drop rates but didn't so we got enough skulls for everyone.

The Ancient Salt wasn't too bad, took awhile for them to drop. You want to make your way to i'm guessing D-12 in Western Altepa Desert through hidden tunnel entrance to Quicksand Caves. Through here you'll need some people to help with the weight sensors to get through a couple doors. If anyone has done Zilart Mission 12, you'll want to head to the ??? where you fight the NM Pot. You'll enter Quicksands and you want to make you way to a weight sensor at L-8(?) go through the doors and you'll come to a square pathed room. Keep going till you come to another weight sensor and go through - at the end of the room will be well quicksand with a hole to go down, drop down at I-8, should be a ??? (WARNING: If you are currently on ZM12 and don't have a suitable party for this don't click it!). This will be your area to camp the Sand Diggers. There are about 4 in the whole area here 3 of which aren't surround by antica or scorpions, the other one should be hanging around with them. Not so much strategy... i mean they're worms.

We then headed to Temple of Uggalepih for some Giant Fish Bones off the Tonberry Stalkers. Out of all the times i've been here and fought a lot of tonberries i've never seen these drop so i was kinda wary about the drop rate. Some people on other posts say they've got them rather quick but it took us a nice while >.< took my friend another day to get her's as we were both tired near the end of the day. We can confirm that we got the bones near the entrance of temple and up a level on temple with Stalkers (near Temple Gaurdian).

Next stop was Outer Horutoto Ruin in West Sarutabaruta entrance at F-10/11. If you've done Windurst Mission 6-1 you'll know the next area to camp. The Ten of Coins card can be bought but i'd figure i'd rather camp it. First time i camped it was sometime ago just to have for quest and sorta gave up on it cause it wouldn't drop. This time i came there were a couple people camping it, i decided to log there and camp next time i logged in. I log back in and camp probably close to 6 hours with TH2 and no drop >.< finally i beg my friend to come help me with these and as she is on her way one drops, and then another as she enters lol i swear she is good luck. Each card takes about 15 minute spawn or 6 hours Vana'diel time, probably won't get a Ten of Coins pop every group though =\ so that kinda bites.

The Sands of Silence was pretty easy to get, dropping off Demon Magistrates, we fought Chancellors as well but, both drops we got off Magistrate. You might have to be pretty good with your pulling unless you fight through every demon in the room, thre is however a lone Demon Magistrate pop if you drop from the Yagudo side of the castle in th tunnel. So you can fight that if you have trouble handling 4 of the demons all at once.

As i went to Sea Serphant Grotto to try and purposly break my Mithran fighing rod (Was never successful) with another friend, decided to get a Blackend Toad off a Brook Sahagin - couldn't believe it dropped off first one, i've also seen them drop pretty commonly before so shouldn't be too hard.

The Broken Mithran Fishing Rod was probably the most frustrating part... none up in Auction House so thought we could break our own. We were told that using meatballs on the boat ride/ferry Selbina-Mharua - Mharua-Selbina would be best. Don't even try to fish it up just when a fish bites press the command to reel it in. We tried that a few times with other bait in another area and only our lines kept breaking. When we went to go to the boat, we checked AH one last time and found to our surprise 3 Broken Rods in stock so we bought them quickly. So the damn fishing patch almost pissed me off quite a bit cause i couldn't break this damn rod. So if you can't find in AH try meatballs or the boat ride or a high level fishing friend to try and break it, only advice i got =(

At this point i was kinda frustrated so i decided to buy the Wandering Bulb from AH wasn't too bad cause i wanted the crown so much ;-; Utukku in Fei'yin should drop this fairly commonly i'm assuming like Demon's with Sands of Silence.

And of course Workbench probably easiest out of them all to obtain, low level woodworking craft plus pretty cheap on AH.

I wish anyone good luck with the quest it gets really frustrating at times, takes from a couple days to months for help but i must say it pays off =) Oh and and please be careful with the quests you have going on at the time just to make things run smoother... if you have Personal Hygiene going at the same time as the Opo-opo and I, don't finish Personal Hygiene - just gotta do more running around =\ quest and completion order should be: Gullible's Travels > Even More Gullible's Travels > Opo-opo and I > Personal Hygiene. If i have giving wrong positions or something i'm sorry =( feel free to correct me, Good luck! ^^

Insanity...
# Jun 16 2005 at 8:19 PM Rating: Decent
I am Rank 7 Bastokan with "hero" status in Windurst and Kazham, and I've finished the Gullible's Travels and Even More Gullible's Travels quests to receive my dreaded stench. I then moved next door to talk to the Mithra to receive the Personal Hygeine quest, thinking that had to be finished before I flagged The Opo-Opo and I quest. I rid myself of the stench and a couple friends and I killed the leeches while we were there for fun. Went back to Kazham and got my Mithran Stone for Personal Hygeines' completion. Went to talk to the Opo-Opo Lulupp to receive my quest and nothing. Just annoyingly shouts "Opo-Opo!". I have tried everything from trying to kill the Jammer Leeches a number of times to desperately going around Kazham and speaking to every NPC. If anyone has any clue as to what I need to do to get this quest flagged, please send me a message. Before insanity takes me...

Edit: I've found out what to do if any of you ever wash the stench before flagging the Opo-Opo and I quest: Each Blue Rafflesia can be successfully examined, (you get a message saying you find nothing inside, or you get a jar of rafflesia and the flower spits the mist out at you), each in-game day. It took me about 8-9 succesful examinations to regain the stench. I hope this info helps anyone with the same problem I had.
