Battle Notes

In order to enter the battlefield you will need to bring a Star Orb, which is obtained by trading 40 Beastmen's Seals to Shami at (H-8) in Port Jeuno. When you are ready, trade the Star Orb to the Burning Circle inside Waughroon Shrine and choose to enter the battle The Worm's Turn.

Up to 6 people may enter and you will all receive a level 40 restriction. You have 30 minutes to win. You will fight Flayer Franz & 15 Flesh Eaters. Since they are worms, they are immobile, but unlike the other two BCNMs you have twice as many enemies to fight.

Both Flayer Franz & the Flesh Eaters can cast Stonega II, so it's advised to have a Bard use Horde Lullaby & Earth Carol constantly, as well as have a Black Mage use Sleepga to limit the amount of active worms.

our party
# Nov 01 2004 at 6:08 PM Rating: Decent
Our party consisted of a drk/war, rng/thf, 3 blm/whm, and whm/smn. We start off with 2 blm's using ES and sleepga, one on the right worms and one on the left worms. Than everyone groups together in the middle and just unleashes hell on the franz.

Once Franz is dead, we all regroup in the western area where you enter so we can safely heal and regain mana. Once we get full mana, one blm uses sleepga on the worms on the left and everyone else agas and attacks the worms on the right. We continue this until they are all dead.

It is seriously so easy to do. Took us three times to perfect this, and now we do it easily every time. You can drop me a question if you need something cleared up or confirmed. :)
jobs

ok this in my opinion (being a blm) is the easiet BCNM40 Basically the pt needs to be this:

1 Tank(NIN PLD WAR) 1 Sleeper(BLM or BRD) 1 Healer (WHM SMN/WHM BLM/WHM RDM) 3 Jobs that fight with Ranged Attacks(BLM RDM RNG SMN)

BST could be used at as ranged attack with jugs but other than that charming worms isnt very helpful.

Being a BST who does this BCNM weekly. I would just like to say "LOL".
5BST's and WHM with Erase is ideal. I do it with 4BST's and a WHM, we don't really care what the 6th job is (we've also done this with just the 4BST's and WHM, no 6th person at all). It doesn't matter, but we prefer it to be a healer (if we can't find another BST). Charm the inside circle of Worms, attack Franz, Stand back and wait (a good BST will know what to do from this point on with no further instruction). When the inside circle of worms are dead, charm an outside worm and use it to keep another busy, meanwhile the BST's go in to finish off Franz. We don't set records but we average 15 minutes.
Here's some bad day examples of the power of having BST's in there: 2 BST's (married couple) got DC'd during the fight. We still won with the 2 BST's who were left(10 worms needed to be killed). Another time, don't know how/why this happend, but, BOTH WHM's were killed very early in the fight (usually nobody EVER gets killed at all) 4 BST's won the fight (franz was already almost dead at the time).
We've never run out of time, but like I said, we don't break records either. I had to reply, though, when I saw what was written about not being very useful. I'm not "flaming" or anything like. I'm sorry if I came off that way. I just had to defend my fellow BST's! ^^

We did this the past 2 nights. Got some pretty good drops. We broke the record for this 3 times consecutively. Our best time: 18 mins and 30 secs.
Party was the following:
pld (me)
rdm (Chisai)
blm (Koral)
rng (Sirgoosealot)
drk (Durandana, no relation)
drg (Mysticrain)

we did 6 runs of this with 4 blm 1 rng and 1 pld. one of the blm would sleepga while 2 others nuked and the last one healed. we took out the boss first and then regrouped and took out the rest. It was extrememly easy. We got about 450k gil each, and would have gotten 500k if one of the ppl hadnt accidentally thrown away the scroll of erase.

Really doubt it was "accidently thrown away". He probably used or sold it behind your back.

To make the charge that the player lied about throwing away an Erase Scroll is shameful. How do you know that he cheated his teammates? It is a cheap shot from a very cynical player.

Let's say he did lie. If he sold the scroll at the AH, then there would be a public record of the sale and he would be exposed as the liar he is. He could sell the scroll directly to the buyer, but this would be very time consuming.

Well I did my first BCNM as a BLM. Did this one. We did it 5 times, we won 4. I died twice.

Our party set up:
BLM (me)
BLM
RNG
RNG
THF
WHM

OK after the first one the THF had to leave, so we did it with 5. Then then WHM DCed during the middle of the second one (I think he was mad because he got a crappy drop on the first, and he didn't come back), so me and the other BLM fired off our 2-hrs and proceeded to aga the **** outta the worms. We one

Then to our (not so good) luck, a WHM was in Palborough mines. We invited her to join the PT, and she was a pretty bad WHM. She didn't cure very much. We lost the last one because of her - I got sucked in the middle and died. The other BLM got silenced and asked the WHM for Silena about 100 times. She didn't give it to him, then we all died.

ok anyway:
This is a LOT of fun, if you can do it right. I'd reccommend getting as many Rangers and BLMs as you can. All melee jobs here are pretty much useless. A bard could be could to use ballad, prelude, and sleep the worms. A healer isn't necessary, but the BLMs MP will run out really fast, and they can't keep healing duty.

OK as long as the Strongest worm is alive, you can and will get sucked in to the middle. Run out ASAP. If you get stun or bind you are in a ******** of trouble. The exit is to the West. Once the main one is dead, you won't get sucked in.

Take your time on this. Let the BLMs rest their MP up. Even on the round where I died, we raised 2 PPL (tractor doesn't work in here), and we waitied for weakness to wear off. We beat it with 4 minutes left. Tell the rangers to bring a lot of arrows. Drops are nice. I saw a party do this an entire Saturday. There were a lot of ppl outside that would use their orb to get the PT in, then they would pay them 50k and warp 2 that person out. They 5 manned it, I don't remember their PT set up, but they won every time.

Hey Killerme, i'm on Titan too, send me a tell sometime and maybe we can hook up to do this BCNM sometime. Kinda hard to find BLMs and RNGs that are willing to stick hours into this. I play every night from about 12am-4am CST, hopefully we can get together.
My two cents
# Sep 23 2004 at 2:54 PM Rating: Good
Having now done this bcnm 8 times over the last couple of days I have a few observations I've made that might hopefully help others.
1. Don't get stuck in a rut of we HAVE to have these particular jobs or we can't do it. I've done it with both the conventional pty (blm x3, rng x2, rdm ok so a whm would be the true conventional pty but with this setup rdm worked fine) and the unconventional pty (brd, blm, whm, pld, mnk, war, and whm) and haven't lost yet ^^ Not trying to sound self serving here but I think the one job that any pty should absolutly have is a competent blm. Sleepga is a must have for this guy. If everyone knows their job ahead of time and can keep their cool there's no reason that almost any party shouldn't work with this bcnm (barring any blatently stupid setups whm x6 >.<) Certainly some will work better than others (my conventional pty broke the Titan record last night with 7 min 35 sec :D I'd love to hear from other servers about the records there)but the biggest thing is relax and enjoy it. This can be a lot of fun.
2. Unless you're going for a record, don't forget that you can always pull back and regroup if things aren't going quite right. That's one of the beautiful things about this NM, he can't chase you. Don't spend too long back there though, that 30 min time limit goes by faster than you think. The chance to step back, clear your mind, and get it back together can be all the difference in the world though.
3. This is gonna be the longest part here, seeing as how I'm a blm this is where the bulk of my experience with this BCNM is gonna lie :P If you cast sleepga on Flayer to start you can hit EVERY worm with it O.O Once he's gone aim for the second one back directly in front of you, you'll sleep almost all of them and the few that you do miss will be so far back they can't hit you. This is where if you have a second blm or a brd they will come in handy cause they can pick up the spares. As was noted by the brd in my pty and in this thread, their Horde Lullaby just doesn't have the range for them to be trying to take on a whole side of worms. Also, I've found spamming sleepga to not work well either. Wait until you see a majority of the worms wake up before casting it again. This spell does not extend the sleep time on mobs that are already sleeping. Nothing sucks worse than casting sleepga and two seconds later ten worms wake up and here you are staring at the timer 23,22,21.... In this fight twenty seconds can be all they need to eat your pty alive. While you're waiting help the whm out by throwing in some heals if need be. Don't start nuking yet you're gonna want to save as much mp as possible. Which brings me to another point, Aspir is your friend, don't forget about it!!! If you don't have it go get it!!! Also my recommended food for this is Sweet Rice Cakes (MP +17 Vit +2 Int +3 Mnd +1 and most importantly +2 HP/MP when healing). I've done this with and with out them and the difference in your rest time is staggering. That +2 makes a world of difference. Not as much +MP as pies but the healing bonus is more than worth it. Also, I've never used anything except melon drinks and been fine. Last blm point, while worms are weak to aero I've consistently found that blizzaga will always out dmg aeroga by a fair amount but it also eats up your mp (57 vs. 82 almost the difference in dmg you cause). I usually just bounce back and forth between the two since I hate just standing there waiting for a spell to recharge.

Well, I don't think I've seen most of what I said there here before so hopefully it's all new information but more importantly I hope it helps :D

Sure he can't chase you but he has a job ability that pulls you into the middle beside him :P no regrouping till AFTER he is dead.

Uh, yeah. But theres this thing that all abilities, spells, attacks, etc have: its called range. If the party pulls back and rests OUT OF TRACTOR RANGE (which is actually right outside the circle on the bridge) there is no problem.
Although you are right about one thing... the time to rest is after Franz is dead. If a party finds themselves needing to rest before Franz is dead, they're doing something wrong.

This BCNM seem really interesting. I haven't tried any of them before. I'm hoping my link will finally be able to get together to do one, but I'd be willing to try with any party. As a Ranger/Ninja it's always tough to make cash so anything like this would be worth a shot.

Okay, so we are doing this BCNM ... we had something strange happen. About 2 minutes into battle the worms all go crazy.

What do you mean Crazy? ... well umm all 15 of the little worms (or 14 however many) decide to move. Dunno if it was a glitch or not, but they all relocated into one place, and ... well it was not near the boss. What did we do? Move to the other side, whipe out the big guy, and then take that Super stack of worms (all 14 were in one place together) it was kinda funny. I posted a few pictures on my website of the battle for laughs. To the 5 others I did this with, good times :P

Since my ls has no Bard over level 30, it's a pain in the *** to get Erase, I can never get a bard that will let me take Erase, they always say "You have to pay me 150k gil if you want it", but since I have less then 50k all the time, it's REALLY hard to get it... If any Bard is level 40+ and wants to help me out (for free), please send me a tell...

I was able to do this one five times the other night. None of us had ever done this BCNM before. In my opinion, this is a much better "starter" bcnm than Steamed Sprouts. Sprouts can get quite complicated and easily go wrong.

The party consisted of:

  • pld
  • whm
  • blm
  • blm
  • sam
  • rng (me)

  • We lost the first one because we had our order reversed and we sent the pld in before the blms cast sleepga >_<

After that, we got really good at this really quick. We didn't get close to setting any records, but we did win the next four in a row with very little danger. In all honesty, we slipped up and got the pld killed again, but we were still able to finish off the NM worm and get him [the pld] raised and back in the fight.

By the third fight, we were very comfortable with this. I would venture to say that we can probably do this now without food. I don't think anybody ever used a potion.

I'm sure this part has already been stated in various other posts, but here is a quick summary of what we did:

  • important: start a timer (you have 30 min and the method we used can actually cut that pretty close)
  • buff,eat,and med
  • blm #1 - Sleepga
  • blm #2 - Sleepga
  • pld - Provoke NM worm
  • whm - keep pld alive
  • rng + sam - Pummel NM worm with arrows
  • blm #1 & #2 - re-sleepga often
  • damage dealers - finish off NM worm
  • all non-ranged - run back out of harm's way and med
  • ranged attackers - pick a worm and kill it (repeat as necessary)
  • pld - fire at will
  • blm #1 & #2 as long as there are more than 7 worms, sleep them, after that start shooting off your most powerful AOE spells
  • finish them off and open your chest!

  • Just a few notes and observations:

  • If you are going to be dealing most of the damage (usually a ranger), you are going to get drawn in. Don't panic, just be sure to sub ninja and keep your shadows at full
  • Ranged attackers should really consider bringing bloody bolts and a crossbow. It isn't great for damage, but will save the whm precious MP if your HP starts to get ragged from being drawn in
  • If the NM worm pulls you in, the way out is WEST, you won't be able to see much so just run west and you will get out of the circle.
  • I brought all my lucky charms with me (wild rabbit's tail, 4-leaf mandy bud, lucky egg). I ate the lucky egg about half way through the fight with my orb so that it was active when I opened my chest. Erase dropped :-)

  • And finally, the complete drop list for all four battles:
    Fight #1
  • lost it. no reward

  • Fight #2
  • nemesis earring
  • earth mantle
  • spirit torque
  • vile elixir
  • ice spikes
  • absorb-str

  • Fight #3
  • peridot
  • turquoise
  • spirit torque
  • gold beastcoin
  • refresh
  • fire spirit pact

  • Fight #4
  • turquoise
  • spirit torque
  • refresh
  • fire spirit pact
  • garnet
  • ametrine

  • Fight #5
  • erase
  • ice spikes
  • gold beastcoin
  • spirit torque
  • goshenite
  • ametrine

  • Well, I hope that maybe there was something half interesting in all that junk that maybe hasn't already been stated a hundred times already.

    edit: formatting -_-

I did this one a few times myself. Party was rng, rng, blm, blm, blm, whm. 2 blms concentrated on sleepga, the rngs picked targets, the other blm helped them kill whatever target they picked (obviously, flayer franz first), and the whm just healed people. Mainly those who were drawn in by Franz. Remember, run WEST. If you don't, you... well, die.

Hey folks, wanted to let you know that we have a group on Carbuncle that does this frequently now. We all have echo drops, and potion macros, and we all know our jobs. We don't try and rush, and we have survived PLD death. We are now 8/9 we had a problem on the 3rd try, but we have been doing great ever since.

Are you a BLM, WHM, or PLD with some seals you would like to convert into money?

Our allocation scheme is: Person with the seals gets the "Small change" loot. The big money items are sold and the money is distributed.

    The Worm's Turn
    # Aug 15 2004 at 4:28 AM Rating: Excellent
Did this BCNM today with 2/3 successes.

    Party Config:
    WHM/BLM
    PLD/WAR
    RNG/NIN
    RNG/NIN
    BLM/WHM
    BLM/WHM
    Worked exceptionally well.

Strategy is straight forward, but must be executed with some degree of coordination.

    Basics:
One member of party trades star orb to burning circle in Waughroon Shrine, and selects BCNM "The Worm's Turn", then the rest of the party checks the burning circle to enter battle. Food effects stay, all other buffs are lost when you enter the battlefield. Down the hall from where you enter, the enemy layout is in a circular room as follows:

        01 02 03
      04 05 06 07
    08 09 FF 10 11
      12 13 14 15

15 Flesh Eaters, lvl 40 Worms
1 NM Flayer Franz, lvl 45 Worm

Flayer Franz has a special ability to "pull" anyone that aggroes him into the very middle of the room, which also aggroes all 15 worms. They will hit you with bind, rasp, silence, stone II, stonega, and stonega II.

    Strategy:
    Phaze 1:
PLD charges into the middle of the room and provokes Flayer Franz. Immediately when he gets "pulled" toward the NM, each BLM Elemental Seal + Sleepga's one half of the room. BLM's make sure that the flesh eaters stay asleep with Sleepga while PLD keeps hate, WHM heals PLD, and RNG's use ranged attack to kill the NM as quick as possible.
    Phaze 2:
As soon as the NM is dead, the hard part is over, so the whole party should disengage to a safe distance and heal/rest to full MP. RNG's can continue to use ranged attack and start picking off the flesh eaters one by one. BLM's (and WHM) can start nuking, RNG's can continue ranged attacks, and PLD should sit quitely in the corner, because his work here is finished. When you've defeated the last of the flesh eaters, you can break open the treasure crate and celebrate!

    Suggestions:
The best gear <=40 for each player.
3x Yagudo Drink for each mage
3x Potions for each RNG and PLD, just in case
Echo drops for each mage, just in case
Bloody bolts for RNG, to save on healing

Blizzaga and Aeroga for BLM AOE
    Banishga II for WHM AOE
    Aero II for BLM Nuking

In phaze 1, it is utterly imperative that PLD engages the NM and takes hate first. Flash + Provoke works very well.

In phaze 2, choose a target and keep it engaged until you kill it it. If you disengage, it will heal to full HP very quickly.

    Closing Remarks:
Although this is a very technical battle, it can be very rewarding if undertaken carefully and correctly. Good luck!

    new record on sylph.
    # Jul 30 2004 at 2:55 AM Rating: Decent
today my pt set the sylph record of 8 minutes and 58 seconds. the record we broke was 10 minutes and 59 seconds. and we got erase, utsuemi ni, refresh, nemesis earring, fire pact scroll. so yes why go after the steamed sprouts when you get the same items as the worm turns.
we had a brd/whm, 2 blm/whm, rdm/whm,2 rng/war.. well me being a blm i wasnt annihilated. it was a toss up between me and one of the rng being tractored in. i didnt have alot of problems. need to start off by having blms seal+sleepga than have one blm nuke while other keeps track of sleep timer. kill the nm first. after nm is dead blm nuking takes a break to regain mp. and switch back and forth. i will say this and yes i know what your thinking. after nm is dead have blms use their AOE spells.(what about all of that hate?) they are worms and cannot move..the best they can do is ooo stone2 and rasp you to death lol. so have your blms do what they always wanted to do.... NUKE to hell and back. people using the standard bcnm pt formula cant beat our time. too many targets. so hope this helps out anyone who is trying to defeat this bcnm. oh yeah when the fight starts buff... but no need for protect tho.
    Standard Setup
    # Jul 23 2004 at 5:06 AM Rating: Good
Waughroon Shrine BCNM 40 - The Worm's Turn:
I still don't understand why anyone would want to try "Euler's strategy" with the WHM casting banishga and keeping hate/tank.

    Standard Setup - PLD, 2 x RNG, 2 x BLM, WHM
Firstly of all, Food/ProtectraII/ShellraII and Barstonra - PLD goes in and tanks Flayer, WHM keeps PLD alive, BLM sleeps worms either side and RNG's attack Flayer. As soon as the PLD goes in, his HP will almost go in the red from all the attacks from all the worms. The WHM has to keep the PLD alive with support from the BLM's. The role of the BLM initally is to sleep the worms and nuke them when Flayer has gone down. Once Flayer goes down, it's relatively simple. RNG's attack the worms one by one whilst the mage rest up for -ga spells with the PLD acting as the main healer.

With "Euler's Suggestion", a banishga would not get all the worms, just half. So the other side of the worms would have to taken of - another WHM, BLM, BRD? The PLD cannot sustain their HP with their own MP - it takes up all of the WHM's MP just to keep the PLD alive in the standard setup. The worms cast bind/rasp/silence as well, which means either you carry Echo Drops which are expensive or you add a further duty to another mage to cast silena. With so many worms attacking, spells would likely be interupted all the time. The worms really do heavy AOE damage for the party, if they are not slept.

Taru's can go down relatively easy due to their low HP at the capped 40 and it's not unusual for the PLD to die as well. At level 40, the WHM has the 2nd best defence with Holy Breastplate Armour, behind the PLD. The key job for this BCNM is the BLM and also a WHM because they are the only job at the capped level to have Cure III. But if you didn't have a WHM, 3 mages all curing the PLD would work as well with Cure II.

We did have a battle, where one the BLM taru went too in, ahead of the PLD and got sucked in - he died almost immediately. With only one BLM sleeping one side, everbody took heavy damge. When we finally managed to put Flayer down, there was only me, WHM and one RNG standing. But we took a chance and I raised both the BLM's, and succeeded in turning this battle into a victory with a time of 24 minutes.

The problem with trying a different strategy if you fail, is the potential loss of your 40x Beastmen Seals which are difficult to get, even using a low level job; potential loss of the drops (between 50k-600k) and also 500 exp per person.

at the end of the battle a treasaure chest spawns and someone has to run over and open it up.
a number of items will be placed in the treasure pool.. usually 1 or 2 good items a couple items worth 1-5k and a couple worthless items.

usually someone is decided before hand to take all the treasure, put it up at AH and split and send gil out to the party members when it sells.
    RDMs?

Are RDMs pretty useless in this? I'd love to do one due to the fact that I still need Phalanx, but I'd hate to be the reason the party fails, as well. Let me know, thanks.

Did this last night 4/4. Once I got too close before a sleepga and was sucked in. All those worms at 1 time = death for a mage. Instant, painful death. Very easy with good tactics, but my group certainly wasnt out to break records, 13 minutes was our best.

Did this last night and went 6 for 6 pretty easy except for one time we struggled. PT was Bard (me) 3 rangers, 1 blm, 1 whm. Whm casts barstona i sing kinghts minne 1+2 for uber defence. Me and the blm go in and sleep the front couple of rows while 3 rangers fire away at Flayer Franz. Make sure rangers bring some decint arrows...no woodens. He is key and must die first! With buffs myself or the blm can survive being sucked in middle temporarily. Once boss is dead the rest is simple. blm can start using D. seal waterga and whm can use D.Seal banishiga. I keep peaon 3 on raqngers with hunters prelude when i have time and keep ballad + peaon 3 on mages. If all goes well this battle is cake. The one time we had trouble was when boss sucked 2 rangers and whm in at different times and worms around them got lucky with a few criticals. We almost panicked but me, blm, and last ranger cut a path killing worms to the whm we was smart and casted reraise before each battle. Slowly but surely kept raising each dead member using a few Yago drinks was helpful. Our times were 12-15 minutes and the trouble round took 28 minutes. Only got one erase but 5 Phalanx's. Pretty nice each member got between 200k-450k of drops. Good luck to you all and I hope this helps.

Just tried this with BRD (me), 2 RNG, 2 BLM, 1 WHM. I was only able to hit two worms at a time with Horde Lullaby, which wasn't enough to help people survive being sucked in. We lost the BLM sleeper early on, and it was all downhill from there.

Had a fun time with this today. We did it three times in a row, and no one died. We didn't even use our 2 Hrs until the last time around, because we wanted to break the record (didn't).
The party was: 3 BLM, WHM, RNG, PLD.

Basic strategy was, each Black Mage took turns Elemental Seal + Sleepgaing the main bulk of worms around Flayer. The Paladin just ran in and took it like a pro, while the WHM kept her alive. After we had it all set up, we nuked Flayer from a distance until it died, and usually around this time the worms are waking up from the third Sleepga. Then we retreated into the cove on the west side and rested to full MP. The RNG was plucking away at what she could, until we went back and Aerogaed everything to wormy doom.

All in all, I thought it was pretty easy. Black Mages are a worms natural predator :)
We used the rules that person who used the Orb got first pick, and the rest lotted, each getting one item. I ended up with Utsusesmi Ni, the RNG got Phalanx, and the PLD got Erase. Productive day!
