Summary

The Rhinostery has developed a new "mini" tuning fork of fire. Ringing it upon the protocrystal in Ifrit's Cauldron will open the path to a one-on-one battle with the beast that awaits inside. However, only summoners are allowed to take up this challenge.

Walkthrough

Things to remember:

  • This is a solo battle.
  • There is a level 20 cap on this battle.
  • There is a 15-minute time limit.
  • You can only use Carbuncle.

Speak to Dodmos at (J-9) in Kazham, standing next to Ronta-Onta. You must have at least level 3 fame in Kazham before he will allow you to do this quest. If you meet the requirements, he will present you with a Mini Tuning Fork of Fire.

  • This is not a key item, like the Tuning Fork of Fire, and therefore requires a space in your inventory.

When you have made your preparations, trade the Mini Tuning Fork of Fire back to Dodmos. He won't keep it. Trading him the Mini Tuning Fork of Fire will warp you directly to the Cloister of Flames for the fight.

Try to fight Ifrit on Watersday and do not fight him on Firesday

Upon defeating him, you will receive the ability to summon Ifrit to your side.

Does IFRIT have High DEF???

umm yeah...
I had the same problem some others have had dealing w/ Ifrit and the issue where he is only taking about 50-100 dmg on first 2 SL's.
All other avatars i have fought i have gotten about 200+ or near that on first two instantly killing them w/ a 3rd (when successful on 3rd lol...and not forgeting something as has been the case with Ramuh). Hmmm. SMN magic skill capped at 63 and fought him on Watersday.
Incidentally the others i have beaten were Garuda and Titan on Lightsday and Shiva on Firesday.
Any insight would be helpful :-) Regrouping for tomorrow's battles hehehe.

UPDATE:
Just fought Ifrit on Lightsday...would have killed him w/ 3rd SL if i hadn't hit wrong macro and timed it faster...rather b4 he readied Fire II, cast it on Carby, and took him down in one hit. (don't understand why readying SL didn't put aggro on me...but i think it might be b/c he started to cast FireII a few seconds b4 i commanded Carby to do SL...o well)
So my advice is fight Ifrit on Lightsday(or any avatar that seems resistant to SL on their "weak" day...b/c then SL inflicts more dmg.
Using the 3 SL method has worked extremely well for me and IMO makes these fights easier...it is all about timing. Shiva, Garuda and Titan thru this method and almost Ramuh (if i had remembered to use an ether, D'OH!)

UPDATE (again):
Just beat Ifrit on Lightsday :-) w/ 3 SL method - although i had to use Dia on him to get the last 3-4 HP he had left and let Carby hit him twice...
so...even on Lightsday tho significantly weaker to SL u must be ready to end the battle with a spell of ur own...just a word of advice-might sound easy but it can be very nerve wracking when u have little HP/MP and Carby is about to die and Ifrit still hasn't 2HR'd...GL to everyone hope my experience can help someone
ITEMS USED:
Yagudo Drink x1
Ether x2
Boiled Crab x1
WHM SPELLS CAST:
Protect
Aquaveil
Dia (at the end)

It seems there's a lot of confusion about the avatar battles... Here's the deal: you go to the NPCs as a smn of 20+, they will give you the tuning fork and tell you to trade it to them when you are ready. When you do this, they will ask if you want to be teleported, saying yes takes you to the room that houses the Protocrystal of whatever avatar you're about to fight. You then trade the fork to the crystal and select "Mini-Size Trial by XXX" to enter the battle. At this point you have as much time as you like to buff/rest etc. (except for the 15-minute timer, which shouldn't be an issue) You then run up the L-shaped path and do battle. This is NOT exclusively luck, although it plays a large role. Carbuncle's 2 hrs Can and WILL hit for 1/2 damage (105 instead of 210) I'm not sure why, but I guess it's just like all magic, that has a large range of damage, usually hitting on the bottom or top end. (my blm's thunder does from 55-110, rarely ever 60-100, though). This happened to me twice in one fight with Ramuh, resulting in me being owned after I ran out of MP. Then there's the fact that after hitting the 2hr you must not move much to make Searing Light hit. If they decide to bust out level 2 nukes at this point you're in bad shape and better have a hi-potion ready. Also, about 3 minutes through the fight, usually around the second 2 hr, the avatar will bring out their own 2 hr, if you're not clear when they finish charging it's all over (280+ damage). So, luck does play a role, but it is possible to prepare for these situations, take at least one extra of all your items, I also recommend au lait drinks to heal you without using potions, staying close to full has saved my life in these fights, when stone 2 takes me down to 40 hp. Also, I recommend Physical Earrings (25 MP -> HP) wearing two increases your max HP by 50 and your MP will be 0 immediately after the first searing light anyway. Last, and possibly the most important thing, is to relax, if you get too stressed you'll miss thing and make dumb mistakes, got me hit by Titan's 2hr once. Try this: once you get to the protocrystal room, just sit there and talk with your LS for a few minutes before entering, helps you to calm down, and all you have in these fights is your brain and 44 MP :) Good luck to everyone, and give those Primes a 2hr for me!

-edit: Carbuncle's 2hr can also miss, in addition to doing half damage, not sure why. I was fighting Ramuh, and my 3rd 2hr failed to fire completely, Carby charged up... nothing. I thought maybe he was paralyzed, but it never said it in the battle text, and it didn't just deal 0 (under 44 MP it will hit, but for 0) It just never happened. Anyway, the 4 hi-potions I took lasted long enough for me and carby to beat him to death with my Holly Pole.
I highly recommend summoning carby once and let him fight until he dies before using your 2hr, gives you time to relax and get set up, also if you get hit and aren't feeling good about getting aggro while carby charges, you can just hold off one more summon, until it's going the way you want it to.

No, the problems with his 2hrs firing come either from either MP below the minimum needed for searing light or by a stun attack, paralyze, or him being killed prior to using it. My biggest issue was having it resisted more than once in a fight, it would usually spell my doom.

Kazham runs off of Windurst fame. You need lvl 3 fame to get this quest (like all the Mini fork battles)

So first, you hafta have hella fame in ALL 3 CITIES?
Then you go to Kazham, talk to an NPC near the Home Point, and he'll just GIVE you the mini-tuning fork?
Then you trade it to the PRIME AVATAR NPC dude, and he'll warp you to the spot?
Then you trade the the fork to the crystal, and boom, you're in?
It's that easy (apart from the fame and actual battle)?
RE: Am I reading right?
# Jul 24 2005 at 9:04 AM Rating: Decent
umm... yeah. You get the mini tuning fork from the guy, trade it back to the guy and you get warped to the battlefield entrence, then trade the fork to the protocrystal.
Eh?
# Jul 07 2004 at 11:11 AM Rating: Decent
I hear people saying that you must trade the fork and don't just enter the battlefield without doing so.. But whenever I talk to the crystal without trading the fork, it just says something like "It's a giant crystal", it never asks me to enter the battlefield.

You need to have received the full "Trial by Fire" quest to be able to enter the battlefield that way. That's the 60+ level party battle... 60+ to stand a chance that is. You can enter alone as a 20 Summoner, just be prepared for a quick and painful death.

I defeated Ifrit yesterday and set the record at 4 minutes and 12 seconds on the Shiva server, which surprisingly was only at 9 minutes and something before. Here's what I did:

I fought him on Lightsday. I was a 20 SMN/10 WHM with a SMN skill of 60. I purchased x2 Hi-Ethers, x1 Hi-Potion, x1 Yagudo Drink, and x1 Apple Pie. Before entering the battle, I used an Apple Pie and casted protect, then rested back up and entered the battle. I then ran up the stairs until I could see Ifrit, used the Yagudo Drink, casted Carbuncle, used Astral Flow, sent Carbuncle to attack, then got close to carbuncle and used Searing Light. I then waited a second to make sure Carbuncle would hit, then ran all the way down the stairs. The Yagudo Drink will keep Carbuncle active even after using Searing Light which bought me some time to get away from Ifrit. By the time I got down the stairs, Carbuncle died. I then used my first Hi-Ether and recasted Carbuncle, waited for Ifrit to get close and used Searling Light again. Once it hit, I ran all the way up the stairs while Carbuncle continued to fight Ifrit with the little MP I had gained from the Yagudo Drink. By the time I got up the stairs, Carbuncle died. Once up the stairs, I used my Hi-Ether, recasted Carbuncle, and waited for Ifrit. I then used Searing Light one last time and deafeated Ifrit. Searing Light did over 200 damage each time.

I used the same stragegy to defeat Ramuh as well. And I never even used the Hi-Potion. I also recommend using macros for everything; potions, ethers, yagudo drink, searing light, astral flow, and carbuncle's basic pet commands. Good luck everyone! Hope this helps.

you must be able to get a tuning fork whenever, i saw a SMN12 with all the avatars, because he had a level 72RDM, so does this mean you can get the avatar with any job, just as long as you have SMN as your sub. Can you have partys to defeat these?

Ummm, these are the mini-avatars that a smn must solo and the level cap is at 20. That rdm fought the real avatars and fighting the real avatars is the only way to get Fenrir, sprobably the best summon in the game so far.

Don't under estimate!
# May 11 2004 at 12:41 AM Rating: Excellent
I'd just like to share my stories.

First I tried it with a few yagudo drinks and like five potions. I go in, he beat me... I used Astral flow and got it off once, got him down to half... (Didn't really know what to expect first battle)

Next time I go in, I have about 10 potions three yagudo drinks I get him down to a sliver and he killed me... I was kind of irked because I've spent like 30k...

Third time I bought 7 high potions, 2 potions 4 yagudo drinks, I got him down to one or two more carby melee attacks before he got me.

What I've gathered from this... from experiance...

Make sure your summoning skill is atleast 55+ (you might get lucky)

Watch out for FireII it does about 230 damage...

Make sure you bring one either! Just in incase astral flow wears off and you can't do searing light anymore.

DO NOT HAVE A MAGE AS SUPPORT JOB! THEY HAVE NO! DEFENCE! (I suggest Ninja, because you can dual wands and it helps a lot if you HAVE to melee...)

And the thing I want to say the most... DO NOT UNDER ESTIMATE! THEY ARE A LOT STRONGER THAN YOU THINK!

Unless you are trying to beat the record,i suggest using carbuncle to attack the avatar over and over till the avatars hp is down at least one quarter to one third,THEN use astral flow->searing lights.it will only take 2 of them to finish the avatar.i was using the fast searing light stratagy for the last 2 weeks,i only beat Titan,i was getting beat constantly, the avatars used their 2 hour on me and the chances of Carbuncle missing his 2 hour seemed higher or he didnt hit fo the total 210 damage to the avatar .
Using my stratagy today,i beat Shiva,Ifrit and Ramuh,in a 6 hour period.i cast Carbuncle 4 times before using the 2 hour,he took the avatars HP down enough.
i suggest using a pumpkin pie for extra MP for the Carbuncle fights.remember, you have 15 minutes to complete these solo fights,i suggest you use it.
Good luck.

1st off I can say those who had Summons before Mini quest. I understand if they are upset. I have max fame for every town in preperation for those quest. However these fights are tough and with 2 slight mistakes your dead! And they are very Fun!

2nd I'm happy they have released them so I can have my WHM with Auto Regen and level my sub job with fun of being more useful than WHM backup.

Ok I have beat Titan and Ifrit so far. With 6-8 Hi-Potions *Not all used*; 3 Melon Juices; 2 Ethers; and 1 of the HP drinks for regen. Failed Ramuh 2 time due to mistakes but will work on Him. Others I'm not sure of.

Used Juices @ Start and Hi-Potion when HP below 200.

Go in Cast Carb > Attack > 2 Hour> Searing Light>
Either> Recast Carb> MP Drink> Searing Light>
Either> Recast Carb> Searing Light = Victory!

I am thinking about using Fishkabobs they would probably help a lot! Max MP is worthless Searing light drains all MP. Garuda I faught on a normal day and only got HP 1/2 with 3 landing Searing Lights. Ran out of Hi-Potions about the same time.

Time 4:23 and was record on *Bahamut* for Titan.

On their weak day 3rd Searing light will kill them it seems and Hope I'm right on this.

Repeating Data once again fight on these days!
Day > Weakness > Avatar
Fire > Ice > Shiva
Earth > Lightning > Ramuh
Water > Fire > Ifrit
Wind > Earth > Titan
Ice > Wind > Garuda
Light > Carbuncle is strong can fight any with good chance! I beat Ifrit on Lightsday.

Fire > Ice > Air > Earth > Lightning > Water > Fire

If there is a Fame requirement for these trial-size battles, it's very low. My fame in Bastok is at the most level 2 (I haven't checked it) and I got the mini-tuning fork of earth as a level 16 SMN.

That's not a very well thought out fib considering you can't get any of the mini-tuning forks regardless of fame unless you are a level 20 summoner.
Anyway, Ifrit is strong against light, the element (obviously) of Carbuncle's Searing Light attack. On all other avatars SL did 210 dmg for me, but on Ifrit one of them only did 50 or 60 something. Therefore I strongly recommend fighting him on light day and using dia or light threnody (sub whm/rdm/brd).

Obviously this is something you haven't actually tried personally. You can get the mini tuning fork and try the battle any time after level 15 SMN (you simply don't have much of a chance until level 20). I've gotten massacred by Titan Prime three times now at level 18. (It's a good way to learn the layout of the arena and is a fast way to death warp back to Selbina)

Avatar Battle - SOLO
# Apr 25 2004 at 4:34 PM Rating: Good
Hi, Ok here is the deal with these solo quests..

This Is a CAPPED Quest, *(Max Level is 20)*
Your MAIN Job must Be SMN to enter.

-- And NO, you cant win with any level lower than 20.

----

Dodmos is the NPC Quest Giver,
He is standing next to "Ronta-Onta" who is also a NPC quest giver.

*** Both Located In Kazham ***
By the Kazham -- Home Point --

Ronta-Onta the taru
= Tuning Fork of Fire (Key Item)
Dodmos
= "Mini" Tuning Fork of Fire (Inventory Item)

The NPC who gives mini-fork is always next to the NPC who gives the standard avatar quest.

-----

Once you have enough fame (same as standard avatar quest) he will talk and you can accept the quest.

To fight avatar:
1. Trade Mini-Fork with "Lacia the NPC"
2. He will ask you to accept, if YES
3. THEY will -Warp- you to the Procrystal.
4. Cast Buff Spells and get ready
5. Run Up the Stairs
6. Avatar waiting at the Top

Tell that to all the lvl 18 people that completed this quest.

Its harder when your not 20, AND more expensive...but its hardly impossible.

Would i recommend going in below 20? Hell no. You are gonna end up spending much more, but then again, its a bigger challenge, and i suppose you can walk around Valk unleashing avatars on Pugs before you head to Quif.

Wanna try this trial before 20?
If your answer is: "I like taking gil and using it as toilet paper."....then go right ahead. However, it can and has been done.
