Battle Notes

In order to enter the battlefield you will need to bring a Sky Orb, which is obtained by trading 30 Beastmen's Seals to Shami in Port Jeuno. When you are ready, trade the Sky Orb to the door of the Ghelsba Outpost hut and choose to enter the battle Petrifying Pair.

Up to 3 people may enter and you will all receive a level 30 restriction. You have 15 minutes to win. In here you only fight 2 lizards: Kilioa & Kalamainu.

  • The lizards will use Secretion at the beginning of the fight.
  • They will then use Baleful Gaze at full TP.
  • The lizards are possibly immune, or at least mostly resistant, to all Sleep - type spells.

Strategies

One of the most common strategies involves a tank, a DD, and a kiter (usually a RDM/BLM). The tank can be either WAR/NIN or PLD/WAR. DD's are usually a WAR/NIN with a Great Axe or a DRG/WHM (for self-curing while the RDM is Gravity-kiting the other lizard). At the start of the fight, buff, eat appropriate foods, rest to RDM's full MP, and then go after the brown lizard (the one on the left) as the RDM starts Gravity kiting the white lizard on the right. Don't forget, tanks, to unlock target and turn your back to the lizards as soon as you see them ready Baleful Gaze, to prevent being petrified. Once the brown lizard is dead, go and kill the white lizard while the RDM rests up and heals.

Has anyone received an avatar belt on this BCNM? That's really the only reason that I have to try this battle....

we tried this today 3 times... with rdm/blm(me), rdm/whm, and pld/war... petrify on the pld did us in both times, as well as the white lizard getting unbound quickly, even with ele seal/bind... thinking the trick is to keep one liz bound while trashing the other... any suggestions would be helpful...
What worked for us
# Sep 04 2004 at 8:33 AM Rating: Decent
Well I did this twice the other day with a 50/50 success rate. We went in with a pal/war, rng/war, rdm/blm the first time. And we got one down to about 40% before it all went south. Next fight is the good one rng went to nin sub instead (big help). We went in and buffed up the rdm scarfed back pumpkin pie and melon juice pal drank melon juice meatbobs all round. Bind works like a treat like everyone says ele seal is optional. I found it stuck most times regardless. The big problem here is when the tank gets petrified. I would recommend stacking on all the protection versus Petr. they can get cuz this is what will ***** you. In the end our pal died just as the killing blow landed on lizzy 2. Drops were crap and generally not worth our time sadly. We got 2 belts, a liz skin, and absorb-int. Not a great haul.

We tried this today a RDM/BLM (me), RDM/BLM, PLD/WAR...

We all buffed and get rdy to battle I use Elemental Seal-Sleep (Bad idea) sleep failed so I thought it just missed so the other rdm tried the same thing and also didnt work.....well PLD voke the ont lizzy and we all start pounding away on it we get about 50% of his life taken away and PLD uses 2hr and we the RDM are curing. Bind works really well on these guys...little to late for us..PLD gets Petrified then all hell breaks lose the one rdm dies then I died then they just attacked a PLD that could do nothing. Dont use sleep it will never work use elemental seal-Bind it will work wonders! Umm we died in maybe 2 minutes

This probably won't break any records, but here's what I'm thinking.
WAR/NIN (tank) using an Au Lait drink, and Meatkabob.
MNK/SAM? (DMG) using Meatkabob, maybe Icarus Wing for instant TP?
WHM/BLM (Healer) Have Elemental/Divine Seal available. MP regen Drink, MND + food?
Have WAR and MNK get 300% TP. Usual pre-battle buffs. Have the WAR/NIN put up Utsusemi, Attack Kilioa first, activate 2HR, Berserk, MNK/SAM comes in and starts hitting, Smash Axe --> Shoulder Tackle + WHM can Aero Burst with Elemental Seal, MNK does 2 HR, kill first lizzie fast as possible, then everyone can focus on 2nd liz. Goal in this strat is to kill Kilioa as fast as possible, because 2 lizzies hitting is harder than just one. When WAR and MNK get TP back, they can either do the Fragmentation Chain again, or Using Raging Axe and Combo, just depends.
Tell me what you think about this strategy.
Thanks!

i just tried this and got totally owned. it was a thf/drk (me), mnk/sam, and war/nin. we decided that when we went in, i would aggro one and Perfect dodge, then we'd triple team the other with our 2 hrs. sadly, our monk lagged and got petrified as soon as he used his 2 hour, so it was me and the warrior. i miss sneak and trick because warrior wouldnt stay still, so i flee with mine after perfect dodge wears off, and run around the arena for a while. we brought one down to a quarter of its health. all in all, a pretty lame attempt, especially without a mage.

RDM/WHM, RDM/NIN, BLM/WHM is the worst combo ever, don't do it.

My LS did, died in less than 15 seconds.

Party: Sam/War, Thf/Nin, Whm/Blm (me)
Goal: To beat them without resorting to 2hrs

Our general plan was for the two melee to concentrate on one at a time. I'd buff us prior to engaging and elemental seal+bind the unengaged lizard. We were all relatively well equipped and took in food appropriate for our roles.

The first time.. Well, let's just I am very rusty in my healer job. I did a downright bad job of healing the Samurai.

The second time around I was a bit more collected:
  • Eat a rolanberry pie (1300g) for +50 MP (I'm Elvaan, that MP was totally necessary)
  • Sit and heal to full, Samurair meditates
  • Protectra 2
  • Regen Samurai
  • Barstonra (doh! >,<)
  • Melee engage a lizard
  • Regen Thief
  • Elemental Seal + Bind the lizard the other lizard
  • Debuff engaged lizard with Paralyze, Slow, and Dia
  • Stoneskin
  • Cure2..
  • Cure3..
  • and keep curing..

  • It wasn't too long before the other lizard was no longer bound and came after me. The stoneskin helped a lot in this respect to prevent whatever spell I was casting from being interrupted. Samurai voked it off of me with only a slight amount of damage taken by myself. The two melees managed to nearly finish off the first lizard when I fumbled again.. The thief had gotten petrified at some point. :-/ And I started fumbling while trying to figure out what I should do.

I do believe this is duable by our party. After the rolanberry pie, I believe I had nearly 350mp. When I died, I still had 50 left. If I had popped my Yagudo Drink early on I am certain I would have had enough mp to last the entire fight. Using the wrong BarXXX was bad. Towards the end I was starting to worry about how everyone's hp was starting to get low. (The primary thought for barstonra was thinking that the element of petrify might be earth and it would help us resist the stat. This is a proven tactic that has been discussed in the white mage forum.) I should have debuffed the bound lizard after debuffing the primary, too. The bind idea worked wonderfully. I should have tried to rebind the lizard after it broke free. To that end, being Elvaan, I should have worn some +INT gear. I loaded up on +MND gear to make sure all my MND-based debuffs would stick, which they did.

All in all, it was a great experience for us, despite losing ~1000-1500 experience points from the two losses. Good luck to all!

    Peace
    WT

PS: Only one person needs to trade an orb, which will gain access for all three people in your party. When that person trades the orb to the door, they will disappear and all three will receive the level cap. Then the remaining two people open the door and they'll be given the option to enter the arena.

PPS: A link mate pointed out that you can see the battle going on over/through the fence behind hut. Very cool!
    3 orbs for 3 players?
    # Aug 08 2004 at 4:17 PM Rating: Decent
Do you need 3 orbs for each player in the pt to enter? Or can you do it with just one orb?
    TP/Buffs
    # Aug 04 2004 at 4:08 PM Rating: Decent
As of 8/4/2004 when we zoned in TP & buffs go away. I don't know if this is a change, since the latest patch, or if others that posted here just didn't notice TP cleared.

However the fight doesn't start till you move forward and attack them so you can buff and rest to full to your hearts content, before you move forward and attack.

I knew that buffs went away but this is the first I've heard of the TP. This has been a change, I saw the buff removal in the patch information for one of the June or July patches.

We just scraped through this battle fairly comfortably on Fairy (once I got over my panic of first BCNM and remembered I had to heal myself to hold hate *blush*).

We had RNG (don't recall sub), BLM/WHM and PLD/WAR. All buffed and used food and drink after we got in, rested to full and went for it. Battle plan was to sleep the lizzy on the right, but sleep didn't stick.. used 2-hour (for safety's sake) but I believe I was the only one. Got a little low on hp at one point as I was petrified and the Ranger was taking some hits from the remaining lizzy ~~; Came around in time to Provoke it off him and throw out a Cure III. Set a new record on Fairy (around 7 minutes if I recall) and recieved Shield belt, Gunner's Belt, some sort of broth (I presume for BST) and a lizard skin. Could have been better, we were aiming for a scroll or two... but we survived and our strategy seemed to work, so we may attempt it again soon.

My question is, am I able to re-use the Sky Orb for a 2nd time, or must I buy a new one with beastman seals? The reason I ask is because the orb has remained in my inv. after we completed the BCNM. I know that if you fail, the Orb becomes useless (our RNG found that out, so I had to go buy another) but what if you succeed? Can it be used again? Thank you, and good luck if you try this, it's not too bad. ^^

I WAS THE RANGER!!!! ranger/ninja baby hehe we didnt just "scrape" through though :P good job to you and next time dont forget the cures

LOL, hullo Wevan.. hey I know we rocked those lizzy's.. just didn't want to make people feel too bad, y'know? Gotta be modest. ^^

So, do you know if I can use this orb over again... or must we buy another? hah, why am I askin' you here... might as well just log in and /tell you! ^^

P.S. Only reason I forgot cures was because I was a little nervous... ^^ Next time, it'll go even smoother.

Just did this BCNM last weekend for the first time using the job combination described above - RNG/WAR, SMN/WHM, and WHM/BLM (me) and we didn't have too much of a problem with the lizards. Unfortunately all we got was some lizard skins, a chestnut log, and Absorb-VIT scroll (might wanna add these items to the list above). Ended up being enough to cover the cost of my Yagudo Drink and chocobo/teleport fare over there :)
    What about this set-up?

We broke the record on Bismarck last night (about 7.5 min) with the following configuration:

    Ranger/Ninja - me
    Red Mage/White Mage
    Paladin/Warrior

The fight pretty much went like this:
We get in, buff with spells, eat, and med to full. I ate a Meat Chiefakabob and had a Persikos au Lait. The PLD had a Fish Chiefakabob and a Yagudo drink. The redmage had a pumpkin pie and a yagudo drink. I open the fight by using Barrage on Kilioa. It misses (/cry) so I take one more shot before I try to refresh my shadows. The lizard get off a double attack and messes up my shadow recast so I'm a bit worried at this point. I go ahead and unload Eagle Eye Shot. As this is happening, the PLD provokes Kalamainu and pounds on him while the redmage uses chainspell and unloads debuffs on all the lizards. His rationale was that he wouldn't waste good healing MP on debuffs. I thought that was a great idea. Some of the debuffs stuck (slow and bind), others did not. Since my shadows were gone and my DEF is like that of a white mage I had to use two high potions very quickly to avoid death, but shortly after, the first lizard went down. Just as we arrived to assist the PLD, the second lizard paralyzed him. It was ok though because he had accumulated so much hate by then that the RDM could heal him while I pounded the lizard. RDM never had to use Ether, but did have to med for just a sec (thank you yag drink). We finished off the second lizard with relative ease.

    Drops:
    --------------------
    1xLizard Skin
    1xDrain-AGI
    1xSteel Ingot
    1xSong Belt

All told, the drops could have been better, but selling the song belt should cover our costs. I'm still looking for Utsesumi: Ni and a Sarashi. I hope to do this again soon with the same configuration. I will sub thief next time since the ninja sub didn't do us much good in this particular battle.

    Good Luck!

they cannot be slept...we went in as a PLD DRK and RDM...first thing i do is Elemental Seal+Sleep on the left one...i had about 44 INT and elemental seal on when i casted and that damn lizzy still smashed us..the drk was throwing hits like 60-70 dmg with one of them Inferno Swords they were actully doing good on health will pld sentenial and me healign him untill i noticed...the lizzard that i had failed to sleep was attacking me now from the back...then i had to heal myself the DRK couldnt get drain off in enough time it petrified him and then basicly it was me and the PLD against 2 lizzards..i just wish i had a eremites wand and all those things that bring spell interuption down....becuase i had plenty of mp to use but the luzzard kept hitting me..when i died i had about 200 mp lft out 260 the pld had about 70/130 and the drk was nearly full...if we were able to get out all our mp we could have won but that didint happened..it was our first time and for a nice party id suggest 2 PLD using Berserk to end it more quicly before whm runs out of mp and a WHM one pld to tank each lizzard o and the whm better have soem good mp and be ready to through one Beni right before you know your gonan die if you do becuase that is what i feel what would work and i will try it later with my WHM sub so i can use Divine also i will bring a Yagudo Drink and stay farther back this time ^^
