Summary

Visit two of the eight active thieves gathered by the Tenshodo, and confirm the signatures of the people who originally wrote the documents in the "letter from the Tenshodo."

Walkthrough

Note: You must have completed Thick as Thieves - THF AF2 to start this quest.

Head to Windurst Woods and talk to Nanaa Mihgo to receive the key item Cat Burglar's Note. She requests two more thief signatures.

Go to the jewelry store in Lower Jeuno and speak to Yatniel, who asks for four Quake Grenades. He is outside the shop on the bridge. Gernades drop off Goblin Miners in LoO or can be purchased for 7k from some guy in Norg and Bastok or you can purchase them from the AH for around 5k. Trade Yatniel the grenades for his signature.

Next, go to Mhaura and speak to Hagain, who is upstairs in the Sailor's Stay. Hagain gives you the key item Bomb Incense and sends you to the Garlaige Citadel to kill a bomb NM.

Head to Garlaige Citadel, bringing at least four people to open banishing gates in your path. You must check a series of ???s in the zone. They are at:

  • I-9, near the first banishing gate.
  • H-9, just to the west of the first ???.
  • F-9, through the first banishing gate.
  • F/G-9, across the hall from the last ??? and to the east.
  • G-8/9, back toward the banishing gate.
  • G-7, to the north of the last ???.

The final ??? is at I-6 (east of the last ??? on the above list near where the drop off is after the 3rd Banishing Gate.). Clicking it will cause a notorious monster bomb named Chandelier to spawn. The bomb will self-destruct immediately if he aggros before he is claimed. HE aggros sight and magic so be sure to only use ranged attacks or provoke.

IF THE BOMB SELF DESTRUCTS, YOU WILL NOT GET YOUR NEEDED ITEM.

My strat: (me, Israel)75NIN/WAR, (Alora)66THF/NIN, (Studly)75DRK/SAM, (Jocie)75RDM/WHM~(Icemanx)75WHM/BLM(Dual boxing characters). We stood around the corner while THF went and popped and used hide. I used Tonko: Ni then ran up and voked. We raped it pretty bad. He didn't use Self Destruct at all and the DRK had Stun on macro ready to use. When you kill Chandelier, the he drops your Chandelier Coal.

When you get your coal, go back to Mhaura and speak to Hagain. Trade him the Chandelier Coal and head back to Nanaa Mihgo in Windurst Woods. She'll ask you a question, the answer is "BLANK." She sends you to Ordelle's Caves. Before you go, pick up a Pickaxe because you'll feel like a dumbass when you reach the ??? and don't have one. Go through Ordells Caves like you're going to hunt the Brown Belt NM and Stroper Chyme. Zone to La Theine Plaeau. Stay left and you'll reach the ???. Trade/use your pickaxe and walla! You'll get a cutscene and your Rogue's Poulaines.

(Walkthough through Ordelle's Caves: Go to the hole at H-11/12 on the same map as when you first entered the caves, and drop down the hole. Head east to the tunnel at I-11, being careful to not fall off the cliff. After some stairs, take a left at the intersection at I-6. Turn into the tunnel to the right at H-9. Follow that tunnel to zone back into La Theine Plateau.)

I've got a question. Can you just go into Garliage and examine all the "???" by yourself(except the last one). Then come back when you're ready and just examine the last "???" to spawn the bomb when you're ready with an alliance? Or must you do it all in one trip, with a whole alliance following you around -.-

Note, I know you will need people to help to get thru the 1st banishing gate, just asking whether or not zoning in between examining the "???" will affect anything. Thanks!

nope, won't work, if you zone out, the ???s will reset and have to do them all over again. What you can do however is have a friend shout in jeuno, you do the ???s and when the alliance comes, just invite them when they reach garlaige.

I did this with 70THF/NIN and 74RDM/WHM. It was cake till I got hate and took about 3 of his hits for 600+... Couldn't touch the thf but got hit 2 times and he was already in down to 40hp. I cure him quick and NM never touched him again lol. Well I died from curing him, but my thf friend killed him. Well in a way the NM blew up around 20%HP, BUT he drop the item!!! Thf passed and I got the item :D. Just make sure your tank is either a NIN or a THF. You can't risk taking dmg even as a PLD cause he hits too hard or you're going to need a lot of healers. I guess I can say I was lucky cause he drop the item and I got a Raise from a ls member. Good luck for you other THFs you are going for this quest.

Regardless of what the quest walkthrough says, this thing is anything but a pushover.

74 BLM.
70 SAM.
66 WHM.
59 PLD.
59 RDM.
59 SMN.
59 THF.
57 RDM.
57 DRK.
54 MNK.

The first time, we got the floor mopped with us. It was hitting our Elvaan (high Vitality!) Paladin for 300-500 a hit. It was hitting a level 70 SAM for at least 300-500 a hit. I managed to get the MNK, THF, SMN, and myself (RDM) out with Chainspell + Escape when people started dropping like flies.

The next two times, it exploded immediately after spawning. As a tip? Use Steal to pull it immediately after it spawns. Have the rest of the party wait around the corner, the THF Steal, and everyone else run in once it's claimed.

The fourth time, we managed to win. And here's why. The WHM/SMN and the SMN/WHM kept Blink and Stoneskin up almost the entire fight. I honestly believe this is what saved our butts. After we settled on this strategy, the fights went very well.

In short: He hits like a ton of bricks, but he drops like a fly.
You dont need an alliance... or lvl75's...

Did this today as

60 THF/NIN (me)
60 BRD/WHM
60 WHM/BLM
60 BLM/RDM

NOTES: THF- capped evasion & marksmanship, around +34 evasion with food, +26 ranged accuracy (yeh yeh know it’s not the best equipment -_- )

{What's the battle plan?}

*Clear the area of skeletons, everyone get some tp, THF must have 100%+ tp before the fight.

*Everyone regen up with bard songs. Whm BUFFS+BARFIRE up. Then everyone except THF invisible up. (It will blow up if it sees anyone after popping, the info from here http://www.bvvp.com/gaming/ffxi/thfaf.html)

*Make sure everyone is ready. THF targets the ??? and precharge [Sneak Attack] + [Utsusemi], then pop the nm. As soon as you pop the nm and I mean as soon as, use [HIDE] immediately. (or spam hide macro after u press yes to popping the nm.)

*Get behind it and let off your SA+DE to hold hate, WHM [Haste] the THF, BRD uses Soulvoice(2hr) and sings double [Mambo] songs (evasion one)

*Everyone can start attack, THF strictly use bolts for attacking/damage (I used acid bolts, was doing 80-140dmg a shot) DE as soon as you get TP and keep your blink up. Keep haste and mambo on thf and continue fighting it this way until its dead

*Enfeebles, paralyze, blind, carnage elegy(slow2) and other enfeeble songs, the whm can even flash and holy safely mid fight.

*BLM don’t nuke too much or use very long casting spells as he/she needs to be ready for stun. BRD can also stop bombs with sleep but will need to be sharp.

Comments: I didn’t get hit once it missed most of the time and blink was kept up the whole time without problem, infact the whole party took 0 dmg the entire fight, which lasted 8-10mins. For us it only tried to self destruct once when it was about 10% hp left, the blm took care of it. All in all it wasn’t such a bad fight. The hard part was clearing the skells, man piercing really sucks on bones.

You don’t need a massive alliance or very high levels for this. You just need a bard, stunner, buffer and of course yourself ;)

I just tried this with:
70 thf/war
70 pld/war
69 drk/thf
69 whm/blm

Paladin was taking 80-150 from regular hits, it never had a critical on him.

Unfortunatly the hate seemed a little weird, he did invincible early in the fight and I SA for 1k dmg, then the drk SA for 1k. The drk gets hate and dies. I do a TA/dancing for 1100 and go behind it, somehow I get hate right after that and die.
I thought it would be easy so I spawned it early, whm didnt start fight with mp and pld wasnt full.

This thing completely served a RDM75. Only job that could take this thing is ninja... it uses berserk like every 5-10 seconds, double attacks a lot, and gets criticals a lot. Nin70+ should have no prob solo'ing this though... dunno about any other job.

75 RDM / NIN
75 BRD / WHM

I'm sure a Nin/Whm or Rdm/Nin can solo him. I did not take any damg. while fighting him. Good luck XD

You have to go up to where the holes are, it'll look like four round rooms on your map. When you enter the room, take a left and drop down the hole in the room that follows. I'm not sure which room it is on the map, I'm pretty sure it's the bottom right one.

http://www.speakeasy.org/~sticks/ffxi/treasure/img/ff11/drinnen/Ordell's_Caves_01.gif

You'll find yourself on a raised level, head up to the stairs in the corner and take the up. The map will change and you will eventually hit the exit.

# Nov 04 2004 at 2:03 AM Rating: Decent
Somebody set this straight: If you were to engage the bomb and then it explodes, you would not get the drop, making it different from all other bombs?

Otherwise, wouldn't it be possible to solo it?
RE: Solo?
# Nov 13 2004 at 3:21 AM Rating: Default
To answer my own question, Yes, you have to kill Chandelier without it exploding to get the drop. Oh, well, THFs can do most of their other AFs completely solo, so I guess this is only fair. ><

4/6 to be exact. one u must steal from a quadav some quadav stew, the others are castle zvahl coffer, castle ostroja coffer, and monastic caverns coffer. and it costs money to pick those coffers, not to mention conquest points for the warp scrolls in case of mimic, which happens quite a bit. it took me 6 skeleton keys to get the monastic cavern coffer, 3 for the ostroja coffer, and ive yet to try the zvahl coffer. at 40k+ a stack thf af is not cheap, id rather fight nms for every single one
not so easy

Just a note...from reading some of the posts here they make it sound like it will be easy for a group of 55+. This is just not true. I don't know if it spawns harder for some and easier for others, but we had an alliance of 15. 3 members were killed 1 was a level 67 PLD and another 60 + DRK. This guy hits very hard...criticalled the PLD in full AF for 600+. So, I don't know if people just like playing a cruel joke or what, but be very prepared for this guy.

I went to the Ordelle entrance at F-6 & ran all around the place but couldnt find the room, could someone post a picture of the map or something a bit helpful to tell me exactly where to go ; ;

I ended up in the room where the coffers spawn in 3 corners ( i think the PLD quest room)

This NM is hella overrated. It's so easy to fight it without getting it to explode. I fought it twice (another thf besides myself). All I did was stand and wait, the Pld voked, and it didn't even try to explode. However, it does hit HARD and FAST. A ninja will fair only slightly better vs this NM than a Pally. Since it's insane double attack will tear thru utsusemi no problem. My pally died during the first fight becuz it scored a double critical, that was just instant death. However, myself and the other thief Dancing Edged it's *** for over 1k dmg each, that brought it to its knees. Oh btw, it helps to bring along a high level whm for raise 3, just in case. With raise 3, u will only lose like 200 exp.
I did it
# Jul 29 2004 at 6:35 PM Rating: Decent
Okay , the previous post about ??? location, is perfect, thank you very much. When NM pop, i tried steal macro, failed, twice. So, my party come to a idea, let pld spam voke, drk, spam stun, I run back spam range attack, befor it appears, and it worked. I think it's the stun, that's stopped him. Anyway, this plan will work for sure, cause we had 3 thf in party, it worked 3 times in a row. Not for nothing, thf AF quest, has too much travel to do, too much, I am off to ordell cave right now, to get my BOOT.

famkes site mentioned a new way of engaging it safely.
A few days ago we had a big alliance do this quest for 5 thieves and this method worked:

/targetnpc
/Ja "Steal" <t>

once the THF hits yes , he has to start spamming that macro. chandelier will spawn about 5 secs after he hits yet. Chandalier will not explode if the thfs spams the steal macro fast enough (note: he doesnt steal anything, he merely engages chandelier safely and runs back to the group)
another thing we noted: DONT CAST MAGIC BEFORE ITS ENGAGED. my group did that and he exploded right after that killing 3 ppl ><
oh and make sure to have utsusemi/blink on the thf who spawns him >< he hit me for 580dmg lol i was so glad the tank voked quickly enough :)

so I'm not a high level thf myself, but I did help our LS thf do this quest, and we definitely had this thing explode on us a couple times before getting it right. how we eventually got it to not blow up is:

1. thf spawns the NM, while alliance waits back from the ???.
2. thf immediately runs back from the NM, towards the alliance.
3. (this is what we did, you may have to extrapolate if you have no rng. any ranged attack is prolly ok) rng then engages the bomb via a ranged attack.

This was the only way we were able to successfully engage it without it blowing instantly. Stun failed, and the thf engaging it directly failed. Hope this helps all the thieves out there ^^.
