SummaryGauntlets wrought by Borghertz, the legendary craftsman, lie hidden somewhere in Vana'diel. WalkthroughNote: You must have completed the quest Sharpening the Sword - PLD AF1 and activated A Boy's Dream - PLD AF2 before you can get this quest. To start this quest, head to the armor shop in Upper Jeuno and speak with Guslam the galka. He tells you about a pair of old gauntlets, crafted by the legendary Borghertz, that might have been seen in the Eldieme Necropolis. Head to Eldieme Necropolis and get an Eldieme Coffer Key. The keys are dropped by Haunts, Spriggan BLMs, Spriggan RNGs, Spriggan THFs, Spriggan WARs, Tomb Mages and Tomb Warriors. Next, find a treasure coffer. Coffers spawn in the main, ground-floor chambers at G-6, G-7, F-8 and E-8. If you drop down from the main ground floor at G-8, you can access coffer spawn points at M-11 and M-10. On that same map, coffers also spawn at L-12 and L-9. A coffer can also appear on that map at E-6, which is accessible from a part of Batallia Downs only reachable through Beaucedine Glacier. Trade your key to the coffer to receive the key item Some Old Gauntlets. You do not need to be a paladin when you open this coffer. Go back to talk to Guslam. He will say the gauntlets are work of Borghertz, but he cannot repair them. You then have to go speak to Yin Pocanakhu in the Tenshodo shop in Lower Jeuno. She talks about a toolbox that won't open. Pay her 1000 gil, and she tells you the toolbox is on a crate outside of the Duty-Free shop in Port Jeuno. Find the toolbox and examine the ??? for a cutscene, in which the spirit of Borghertz appears and asks for Shadow Flames from Castle Zvahl Baileys. Go to Castle Zvahl Baileys and examine the torch at (F-8). A notorious monster bomb by name of Dark Spark will appear. Kill Dark Spark and examine the torch a second time to get the Shadow Flames. Return to Port Jeuno and re-examine the ??? at the toolbox for a cutscene and your Gallant Gauntlets. Quest SeriesThis quest is part of the paladin artifact gear quest series. ok dirty secret, if you activate quest you get old gauntlets with thf main and open chest with thief tools, living keys or skeleton keys, it drops every time^^ gl

Me (PLD54) and a LS mate (WAR75) decided it was time for me to clear this quest. As i need to get DRG AF, i need this gone.
Anyway, we get into Eldemine (however u spell that) and we go into drop A, according to http://www.ffxi-atlas.com/maps/eldieme_necropolis/treasure/. We started off fighting Fallen Knights until we realized they don't even drop the key. Then we moved on to fight Tomb Warrior/Mage's. We killed one after another, very easily. He voked, i enguaged, tried to stick a few enfebles (i had RDM sub for sneak/invis). When his shadows went down i casted flash and he got Ichi up. Arround the seventh kill and the key dropped.
We looked arround, checked every spawn point for the coffer, once again according to ffxi-atlas, and didn't find it. We got a tele from a friend and went up to the Beacedine Glacier entrance, and coffer was not there either.
All of this yesterday, and i was tired. I went afk in Eldemine and got some sleep. I woke up this morning and checked for the coffer; no luck. I went back into the main entrance, checked all spawns; no luck. I went for about 2.5 hours until an old friend (as i found out after talking for a while) poped it and took the coffer. I stayed on for abother 45 minutes, failing to find the coffer, and gave up for the moment.
Overall: Key, but no coffer.
And to think that i'm only clearing the friggin quest....

Okay, so I'm on the hunt for my AF gear. All of it. PLD50, and I want to get it done, so that I can go and just worry on leveling.
I got lucky on getting coronet and leggings.
Thing is, no help. Last year, I stopped playing for unknown reason. Fast forward to a year later, LS is gone, all friends gone. And no real help. Everytime I shout in Jeuno, there is like 1 or 2 willing to help... For a price. I don't buy gil, and it's kinda hard for me to pay someone for help when I need to worry about getting the right tanking gear.
So if there is anyone on Asura willing to help me in atleast getting the rest of Coffer keys, it'll be appreciated. I'm a broke PLD trying to have fun.. Not stress on trying to get gil for someone to help me out.

A level 75 whm friend and myself 55 PLD went to try and get a key.
He led me to a spot where we started to fight with a tomb Warrior; things were ok UNTIL another one decieded to join the fight seein the whm was in yellow at the time. We killed the first one; I had provoked the second one to me and Covered the whm so he could get off some spells
Still doing ok til a Tomb mage saw the low hp and decided to cast Tornado which hit me for over 800 pts then the mage hits me and im dead
My Freind kills the other Warrior and the Coffer key drops .. My freind ends up dying .. now time to find the coffer

Well this mornig at 9am me (75WAR), and 72 BST + 62 RDM (friends) decided to go get me my key for PLD AF, anyways we get there and for about 20mins its all fine, no coffer key yet but we're cool with waiting it out.
30ish mins after our arrival at the hume bones, an ENTIRE Jp HNM linkshell turns up (30+ people) and just stands right in the middle of the room with all the coffer mobs absolutely spamming voke on anything that pops. We get the odd 1 or 2 claims but its not gonna happen so after 3ish hrs we call it a morning and go get on with our days (no key).
Anyway, me and a 75 RDM friend went again just now, and after 2hrs (at least) we got it!
anyway, long story short drop rate is appaling, allot at least an entire day or be very very lucky.... Good luck

I've been trying to get help on this quest for a while now, but to no avail!
I have the coffer key, but need the chest and to kill Dark Spark. I'm levl 56, so I also need the head piece. I'm on Odin, and if anyone could help me out, that would be MUCH APPRECIATED!

Ok just helped a LS member get this and here are the locations of spawn points of coffers 4 on main floor G-6, G-7, e-8, f-8 on second floor there are 5 more and to get to them u have to drop through various hole or tele to vazhl here they are (1)drop through hole at G-8 and they located at M-10, M-11.(2)Drop down hole in area g-9 this drops you into area L-12 wheere the coffer should be very close in that area. (3) to get this one drop through hole in area G-6 wich puts you right in reaching distance of coffer at area L-9. final coffer is located at upper Necropolis through the Glacier and it is in area E-6 (watch out for Nm spawn here) this run takes patience and at least one other person to open doors for you, also make sure you sneak your self and buddy and have invisible for being around the bombs by the door levers. this was a very frustrating thing to find and took like 4-6 hours to actually get completed after this is all done you are ready to go kill Dark Spark for flame it is a lvl 55-55 NM and you should bring help to kill it at least one other person if you are lvl 55 more people if lower id suggest. hope this helps alil cause trust me i know how frustrating this can be also this is a great site for chest and coffer locations for future refemce http://www.speakeasy.org/~sticks/ffxi/treasure/title.html

Got the treasure yesterday, here is a lil story about what happen. Me and some other ls m8s helped me get the key, some died through and 1 de-leveled *cough* got the key after 30 mins or more. (Couldn't remember, cuz it was over a month ago) they leaved after i got the key, maybe they thinked i could handle it by myself. I tryed solo it but died alot haha. Hold a lil break after that. I returned after a month and got the treasure thx to a war58(eng) and a smn65 with a thf41(jp) omg i own a japanese rofl.
Anyone from seraph that could help me with AF head equip? plz send a /tell or send a msn. :)

I was in a party of 6, we camped downstairs and killed about 70 Tomb Mages/Warriors and Haunts. This took about 4 hours... And Guess what! ><
NOT 1 SINGLE COFFER KEY DROP.
i don't know what was on the go, but the drop rate last night was pathetic.
Yeah, sorry, this is a pretty unuseful post haha. But i just couldn't believe it!

This was not as bad as it all was made out to be at all. I got a few LS mates to help me get the coffer key one night then found a 70blm to help me get the coffer chest the next night. And today had a 70rdm and me beat Dark Spark, no big explosion or nuttin'. I got a bigger one of the azures in Eldieme Necropolis^^; Just need to be patient for it and it will come, gl to everyone who does this next!

I was terribly afraid of this quest after reading this forum, but I guess I got lucky as usual, here is my story : we went to Eldieme at 4 people : pld53(me), pld61 (Amandarius), rdm61 (Lepton) and thf70 (Pantherdark). We went to the camp near Hume Bones and we got the drop on the 4th mob we fought ^^. We fought an other tomb warrior to skill up and we got aggroed by a tomb mage during the fight, it used a lot of ga spells and wiped us out. Before we all die, the tomb warrior went down and droped a key (wow 2 in a row).
I came back the day after to look for the coffer, I was alone so I had som problems with the doors. After 10 minutes of trying to find a way, I found the coffer behind a door's lever ^^.
Now I just have to fight Dark Spark, but this quest was a piece of cake until now ^^.
Thanks again my friends for helping me with the key. I'm in debt with you.

I'd like to thank Raiden and Randain, among others, for their help in my acquiring the key. I died a couple of times and even deleveled, but I did get it on my first trip in.
Thanks to Tito for helping kill Dark Spark. Major thanks to my twin Aayliah; anything you need, I got your back. When the coffer popped, Skull of Wrath popped right near me simultaneously. It took her drawing him away and keeping him busy while I healed up to prevent every undead in the zone from going aggro on me. Popped an oil and opened the coffer. Unfortunately she didn't make it away from Wrath ;_;

i left another AF hands quest open, and this will not activate. I have done the AF1 sword quest and yet he will not yield me this quest.

I doubt this reply will help you as it is very late from your post but the answer to your question isnt listed here so i'll post it for others with the same question. Yes, you do need to complete the AF hands quest with one job to start it with another. Thats how I got my pld AF Legs done sent out a shout in Jeuno and a 75 whm that passed over his AF hands need to complete it to get pld AF done(Thank god for procrastination {most likely spelt wrong}) Any how, I hope this post helps.

All I got to say is it took me (52 Pld) and two of my friends ( 75 BRD and 75 NIN) 4 hours to find one key. About to go back in by my self to hunt for coffer.

Yea, just a casual note that no one has seemed to post here. If this is your second AF-Hands quest, you don't need to pay the npc an additional 10k to find the box.

Well finally after like a good month and like 4 failures of different parties, I finally get another party today w/ 3 70+s and a lvl 50 rdm out of the goodness of their hearts b/c I don't pay for help, cuz I do the same w/out reward, well got down there, killed one, someone brought two in, well we basically gettin our asses handed to us, one lvl 70+ died, and I saw the others going so I went Invincible, grabbed the hate of the mage, they killed the warrior, I thought all was fine till it casted Flood, I died and dlvled to 54, and turns out the mage dropped the key, I was raised and lotted, thank the gods lol, but now I'm stuck w/ finding coffer chest on my own, anyone know any good maps?

There's no better site, and it's in English. The only thing they don't tell you is the miscellaneous items you can get from chests/coffers, but for AF and RSE that's not really an issue. Enjoy. ^^

Well I about 2k tnl from lvl 54 paladin just reading up on this af3 even though Ive hadnt had any help gettin the af2 yet, but w/e wanted to check it out, lol just got the boyada coffer key, during my travels as PLD, I seem to have some luck on collecting keys, so far I have like 8 keys including this one, good 4 are coffer and others are treasure, after reading this I sure hope that the Af3 coffer key is in my storage lol, have fun and good luck guys

I know that people hate farming the Eldieme key, and I can't say I'm very fond of it either. However, here's something to keep in mind when you're trying to get anything (keys, items, w/e) to drop:
Every single fight has its own random chance associated with it.
That's right, just camping a key or w/e longer does not improve your chances any more than they were when you initially got there. Every kill gives you the same chance for a drop, and I honestly think that SE made all coffer key drops have the same low random chance.
I've gotten 2 necropolis keys so far, the first one dropped for my DRK AF hands on the 3rd skele, and the one for my PLD AF hands dropped on the 10th or 12th. Anybody's "bad luck" with key drops is just that: luck. If you camp for 3 hours and don't get it, and somebody got it on their first kill, don't think they have a secret. Other than TH2 which slightly improves your odds of getting rare items, it's just random chance. Suck it up and come back another day, because the game doesn't hate you, your luck was just bad.
Be patient and above all have fun.
