Summary

Gauntlets wrought by Borghertz, the legendary craftsman, lie hidden somewhere in Vana'diel.

Walkthrough

Note: You must have completed the quest Sharpening the Sword - PLD AF1 and activated A Boy's Dream - PLD AF2 before you can get this quest.

To start this quest, head to the armor shop in Upper Jeuno and speak with Guslam the galka. He tells you about a pair of old gauntlets, crafted by the legendary Borghertz, that might have been seen in the Eldieme Necropolis.

Head to Eldieme Necropolis and get an Eldieme Coffer Key. The keys are dropped by Haunts, Spriggan BLMs, Spriggan RNGs, Spriggan THFs, Spriggan WARs, Tomb Mages and Tomb Warriors.

Next, find a treasure coffer. Coffers spawn in the main, ground-floor chambers at G-6, G-7, F-8 and E-8. If you drop down from the main ground floor at G-8, you can access coffer spawn points at M-11 and M-10. On that same map, coffers also spawn at L-12 and L-9. A coffer can also appear on that map at E-6, which is accessible from a part of Batallia Downs only reachable through Beaucedine Glacier.

Trade your key to the coffer to receive the key item Some Old Gauntlets. You do not need to be a paladin when you open this coffer.

Go back to talk to Guslam. He will say the gauntlets are work of Borghertz, but he cannot repair them.

You then have to go speak to Yin Pocanakhu in the Tenshodo shop in Lower Jeuno. She talks about a toolbox that won't open. Pay her 1000 gil, and she tells you the toolbox is on a crate outside of the Duty-Free shop in Port Jeuno. Find the toolbox and examine the ??? for a cutscene, in which the spirit of Borghertz appears and asks for Shadow Flames from Castle Zvahl Baileys.

Go to Castle Zvahl Baileys and examine the torch at (F-8). A notorious monster bomb by name of Dark Spark will appear. Kill Dark Spark and examine the torch a second time to get the Shadow Flames.

Return to Port Jeuno and re-examine the ??? at the toolbox for a cutscene and your Gallant Gauntlets.

I believe that its not your AF1 that's required (namely your weapon), but your boots (AF2).

If you don't have your boots done or at least started on, you don't get this quest, I'm pretty sure of it.

My friend, a RDM, had his boots buried and ready to be picked up when Guslam offered him this quest. He was level 50, so I'm pretty sure that if your boots are started or near completed, it should be enough to start on this one.

Well, after a month of being level 54 I decided to finally try to find help with the Eldieme Coffer Key. After 3 hours of searching in Jeuno here is the party I was able to assemble:

60PLD/WAR (needs key)
54PLD/WAR (me & also needs key)
54PLD/WAR (needs key)
54BLM/WHM (needs key)
61PLD/WAR
68BLM/WHM (needs key)
62WHM/BLM
54RDM/WHM (needs key)
56PLD/WAR (needs key)
54DRK/THF (needs key)

Overall I thought there was no chance of me getting a key when practically everyone needed one. We make it to the Hume Bones room, and start pulling. After one hour 2 keys have dropped, and I lost both lots. Another hour pasts, and another key drops (lost again). People start leaving one by one. I finally get my key after 5 hours of constant killing. Out of the eight keys we needed to get we got 6 total (only the other 54PLD was left w/o one). I felt bad for him, but I could not stay up any longer.

Also about halfway through a 58THF/NIN joined and the drops seemed to speed up so TH2 did seem to help.

I would like to complete Arislan coffer chest spawning points by adding one more place. You can also find the coffer chest (where I found it last night) near the Hume Bones room at either (M-10) or (M-11). You can stay in the Hume Bones room without sneak because there's no monsters that spawns in that room (except for an Earth Elemental that pass by sometimes) but use sneak to check the other two places I mentionned. Thank you for all the information you posted on this quest Arislan.

Okay I tried doing this tonight. I was down there for maybe 3-4 hours can't really remember. Anyway it sucked. We had one lvl 70+ person with us and he was a JP PLD. We had almost a full alliance with mainly lvls 54-62. Nine ppl needed the key (including me). Only 3 ppl got one. About half the alloiance left and eventually we got wiped out by a tomb warrior, tomb mage and a haunt. I had to HP and lost a little over 1k xp. (Thank God for Moghancement Experience)

Im level 50 and have done my AF1.

I talked to Guslam and all he says is "head to the counter for assistance" or something to that extent.

There are several places to camp for the Tomb Mages and Tomb Warriors that are the easiest to kill for the Eldieme Coffer Key... I'm gonna be referring to spots on the following Map of Eldieme Necropolis so you might wanna have that open in a seperate window.

What to bring with you:
- Map of Eldieme Necropolis (duh)
- No less than two pt members who can Sneak/Invis
- A couple of ppl with Curaga and Blindna
- Party of 5-6 54+ preferably (too many and the AoE drain special from the tombs will be annoying as hell)
- Good damage, preferably a MNK or two, but SAMs and DRKs work well too
- A person w/ SMN subbed to pull w/ summon if you want to save time

Camp: Tomb Camp Ledge *NEW!*

On entering Eldieme, sneak up make your way to point (C) on map #1. You may need to hit the East Plate once to get the passageway open, but only once should be needed because you should have a clear path to the large West Room.

When in the room, drop down one of the square graves to reach point (C) on map #2. Reapply sneak if needed then head to ledge located in (K-11) on map #2. There are 4 tomb skeletons available here for pull, and the mobs below the ledge shouldn't be a problem as long as you keep your hp out of the orange-red. If there is an emergency, the zone to Batallia is also behind you off the ledge and is easily accessible.

I used this camp the other day and we got 3 keys in less than an hour. I think it had less to do with where we were camping and more to do with the fact that we were extremely lucky, but this was a great camp nonetheless.

Camp: Hume Bones Room

To get there, you need one sneak/invis person to go to the door switch @(H-8) (East Plate) (Map #1 in link). Have the rest of the pt sneak up and break for the door at the SE corner of (G-8). Have the door switch person hit the East Plate as many times as it takes for the others to get into the (G-8) door and then your pt will need to use the switch inside (G-8) to allow the remaining member free passage to the pt.

When the entire pt is in center room at (G-8), drop down the through the floor (square of gravel) to (L-10) on map #2. Get to the room @(M-10) w/ the hume bones and you should be able to camp here safely. Kill the lich and the 2 fallens in the room east of you (unless you brought a SMN) so you can pull Tomb Mages and Tomb Warriors safely from tunnel in (N-8) through (N-10). There are also Dark Stalkers around that your WHM will need to kill for their AF so you can pick those off while waiting for Tombs to re-spawn.

Sidenote: If your pt can take them, haunts and Sprrigans also drop the key and spawn in the tunnel w/ the Tombs

Camp: Ahtu Tunnel

There is an alternative camp that provides access to 4 more Tomb spawns. There are less spawns, but it is very close to a zone in case something goes wrong and your pt needs to run. Have that person go to the East Plate at (H-8) in map #1 while the pt breaks for the junction @(H-9). Hit the East Plate until the entire pt has access to the large southern room on map #1. Then have 1 person use the South Plate at the north side of the room to allow the East Plate person free passage to the party.

Once everybody's gathered in the south room, drop through the center grave and you should be at (L-12) or map #2. Head east until you end up on map #3 then head to the stairs @(I-6). The four tombs spawn in the rooms you passed at (I-7). Be careful, there are possible adds at this camp, but the zone to Batallia is just past the top of the stairs (J-6) and is quick to get to.

Be patient, this key is an awfully infrequent drop so don't bring too many ppl who need it along and expect everybody to leave happy. I have a PLD buddy who has camped this key off and on for 6 weeks and still hasn't seen a drop ><.

Hunting the Coffer Chest
Good news is the chest isn't too hard to find, and you can use the followingTreasure Map to find the chests. The two places that I have seen it spawn before are at the switch in (G-9) and the spawn off Beaucedine Glacier (where I got mine). Unless you're going for through the glacier, make sure to bring two ppl who can sneak/invis to operate the door switches. And also, the spawns on map #2 are accessible by dropping through the floor in the north and south rooms of map #1.

Good luck hunting!
where?
