Summary

A piece of samurai artifact gear lays hidden in a coffer inside Temple of Uggalepih.

Walkthrough

Note: To obtain this quest, you must have completed The Sacred Katana - SAM AF1 and activated the quests Borghertz's Loyal Hands and Yomi Okuri - SAM AF2.

Head to Temple of Uggalepih and farm an Uggalepih coffer key. These drop from Hover Tanks, Temple Bees, Temple Guardian, Tonberry Dismayers, Tonberry Maledictors, Tonberry Pursuers and Tonberry Stabbers.

Next, find a coffer. Coffer spawn points include I-7, I-10, J-11, H-8, G-8, G-7, G-10, G-9, E-8 and E-7. Be careful of doll mobs, which agro to magic. If you need to open a door to check inside a room, ry to hug a corner, which will make it more difficult for tonberries to see you.

Also note, the spawn point at E-8 requires an Uggalepih Key to access, and the E-7 point requires a Prelate Key.

Well, I had a nice evening in Temple Ugg last night.

1st trip in was met with some difficulty, as one of my 2 Siamese cats distracted me while I was looking at my map, and I dropped papers off my lap. When I finished retrieving them, I noticed a Tonberry had noticed ME. Warp out. Tonberrys 1, Tarmus 0.

Round 2: I had my wife with me to run cat interference, and help me with my maps, and she wanted to try the door near the "Kitty Kat" (Coeurl). Well, we did, and lo and behold, my coffer was inside!

Obtained: Myochin Domaru

For the record, mine was at G-9

Just found my coffer last night after the usuall nightmare that is associated with this task. The thing I found odd was that the Coffer was @ I-7. I had thought I had all the spawn points marked on my map but I never heard mention of this spot on any map or post that I've seen. I may have just overlooked it but just in case, I want to post here and make everyone aware of this spawn point. This spawn point is beyone the Temple Guardian, who seems to get picked fairly frequently on my server. Once you enter the room, go down the hallway to your left. (the only points I had found were to the right and right hallway) The hallway will wind around a little and open to a large rectangular room. The coffer spawns all the way in back on the left.
Sorry if I have posted duplicate information, but if so, I have not seen it.

Square Enix probably got the name from history. There was a Myochin family in Feudal Japan (I know because I just finished a research paper on it) and they had armor very similar to this, with large plates and everything. Even some of the details of the armor are like that of the real thing. I think they have a preserved version of the armor in museum or something. But that's my two cents.

Anyway, back on subject. I'm getting the entire AF set for Samurai once I get it up in level. I don't care if people don't like the armor, I think it looks cool.

Total, full-on ownij on this one. I had heard stories about the big, bad, scary "temple of doom" aka The Temple of Uggalepih, home of the Tonberries. Whatever. All it takes is the right team, a good leader and a concise battle plan. First, I organized a huge party to storm down and get coffer keys. Got four keys for four different people. First step done.

A red mage from the coffer key party showed me the way to the floor with the coffer treasure chest. This floor, like all the others, requires being invis. Couldn't find it that time, used warp scroll to get out.

Bought some prism powders for invis in Jeuno. Went back a few times just to get a feel for how the Temple works after learning the floor plan from maps. Finally memorized the places where the treasure might be at. They are E7 E8 G7 G9 G10 H8 I10 J11 G8. I set out tonight to check some spawn points. On the way to the "temple of doom" I ran into a cool Japanese Red Mage who knew some English. Cool, I won't say the name of this player so they don't get swamped with begging players. If you go, it is a huge help to have a 70+ to open the doors and stuff while you are invis. VERY LUCKY - GOOD KARMA from my helping many other players before this. Bam! - first door right near the zone in after stairway we see COFFER TREASURE CHEST i am lucky soooooo lucky and I guess it is just good karma from helping people.

The domaru itself is quite the work of art. It is Samurai armor done in red and black. On a gulkan, it has a very menacing effect. Samurai armor is usually based on using platelets - instead of one large, solid metal armor asian armor is made up of many smaller, individual plates (of course Europe had that awesome armor known as chainmail - made from interlocking small ringlets which was an amazing invention and often worn under the main armor). Anyway, the domaru is cool - good defense, awesome on a gulka, and it's free because i found it in a treasure box in a tomb of death.

I wish other people luck on this. If you have to go beyond the locked granite doors, get the keys off Tonberry cutters.

Grimlok ownz temple of doom. The end.

Well I said I was done with this hellhole but I went back to make one last attempt. No one on the way there wanted to help me so I still went. Well I go to the area where the coffers were and two high lvl JP players were there fighting rumble crawlers. I asked them and they agreed to help me. Well I went into area (J-10) looked in there was no coffer in sight so we were about to leave and when they opened the door we aggro'd a Temple Guardian. It was quickly taken out. Then we headed to the room with the NPC tonberries and there is was. I was so excited I blitzed over to the chest quickly traded my key and got my crappy body piece. At least I look good.

This has to be the worst coffer in the game. So many people including myself have died to find the coffer. I died 3 times in the span of a hour trying to locate a coffer; as well as a lvl 70 Blm. It ended up that my coffer was behind the Granite door in E-7. Which needs a prelate key. In an effort to get a prelate key the lvl 70 BLM dies, I was too far ahead to see it happen. The 75 JP THF that was with us tried to fend them off. But it did not work. So I have officially given up on this coffer. Its a joke anyway since Square-Enix gives Samurai's the crappiest AF body piece for all that trouble. It is not worth it. I will be using a Master Gi until I can afford a Haubergon. If you have this Body piece I have nothing but respect for you.

My Story...

Ok, going with the flow of some of you, here's my story ...

All started two days ago ... I decided I would go get my armor, thinking it can't be as bad as everyone else said, man was I wrong.

First I tried random asking ppl for help ... if any of you read this, I am so sorry for bugging you, and yeah, that didnt work. So then I start asking for help ... thanks again to Yasuyuki, Ducc, Sho and Kaisha on Asura Server you guys rock!! ... but to somewhat of a stand still.

So I decided I'll go to the temple and check it out myself. Once I get there I do a search and low and behold, 2 lv 75 Thiefs are killing things there .. so I ask them if the come across a coffer key if I could have it. Ding! 30 mins later they get one and I lot! Ok, so I think. 'Now what?' No problem, pop into Jeuno again grab 2 stacks of prism powders and silent oils and back to the temple I go.

Since I didnt have a map, I drew one from BEB's site < www.ffxi.blueelephantbrigade.com > if u havent gone there yet, do - they have good maps. Now I'm wandering about for about 40 mins. and then I say '***** this, I'm gonna camp one location and hope I get lucky' ... failed that one too. B/c while I was camping that spot I was asking High Lvls walking by to look for coffers.

Well to my luck, a High Lvl says 'Found one ... behind the prelate key door >.<' and minutes later another Samurai logs into the same room I'm in telling me that the coffer has been in that room behind prelate door for 2 days now. <sigh> So now what?

Waiting some more, I use my broken Japanese to ask for key help from a 75 mnk/nin and 75 war/nin ... and in 20 mins. they get me the Ugg. Temple Key AND prelate key. They would have helped me get coffer for sure, but they died killing some NM i didnt see. So stranded again inside them temple I say '***** it, I'm doing it w/o help' and head to the prelate room. Make it passed the wooden gate with no problems, passed the Ugg. Key door no problems and into a room with, yes, 8 Tonberry's >.< So I wait, invisible in a corner for them to move ... oh but then invisible starts to drop. So I try to find a decent spot to use item, nope I get aggro'ed. So I run for it ... towards the prelate door!! I use the key, open the door and frantically hit the TAB key trying to find the coffer and BINGO there it is behind the throne. So now I have every tonberry, bee and whatever at my heels and Im running for the coffer. I make it there, open the coffer, get the armor and try to run out. The 16+ Tonberry's saw that I didnt go far, but what did I care, I was doing my happy dance b/c i got the armor!

I am never going back to that place EVER again unless I am Lvl 70+, but yeah thats my story. have fun guys!! ^-^v

Finished this confounded coffer tonight, probably due to sheer luck, having previously died 3 times earlier today, I wasn't in a particularly happy mood to be dealing with a bunch of cranky tonberrys'

Having managed to get the coffer key off the Zilart mission run my LS was running, helped them killed the NM a couple times, though I wasn't a huge contribution to their Zilart run.

Anyways, after they finish up, I ask for some high level help, no dice, I gotta go it solo. So I just ask for the directions, and head to the area with about 4 and a half stacks of prism powders. I also now regret not leveling Ninja to 9 and getting Tonko: Ichi...but oh well.

After the first 3 or so tries of running into the area like an idiot, and aggroing some of those tonberries, I get things straightened out and start to properly look for the coffers, the first mini room (empty), the safe room (empty), the second mini room (empty) the other ones looked to be a pain to get into so I just ran back to double check what I already knew. Now that big room next to the "not so secret, yet pretty safe to hide your *** in" room, I tried to take a quick look into, managed to get aggro and zoned again. Went back, got a better look, and it sure as heck wasn't there. Tried to check the back corner room with those npc tonberrys' no luck, nothing came up, and I wasn't feeling bold enough to run in there to check. So that leaves all the coffers checked, excluding the 2 behind the Temple Guardian and the locked doors.

After another few minutes of my futile efforts to double check the bigger rooms, I convinced a high level rdm to open some of the doors for me, it only confirmed that the coffer was for sure either behind the locked doors or the Guardian, he soon left after that thanks to massive tonberry linking, he did very well handling it all, though with 4 tacked onto him, he had to escape and I can't blame him for that.

By now, I was ready to just sit my *** down in the safe room and wait the grueling long time it would take for someone to go and open the coffer, and hope it spawned somewhere...accessible. Thanks to my curious nature I did a search and came up with a PLD and a WHM who I know well enough to start conversation with, both were lvl 74 and 75 respectively. Them and their group were headed for a leviathan run, which meant they'd have to clear out the Temple Guardian to get there. So I asked to follow them. Worked well enough, they nuked the Guardian in less then a minute, and I charge in, seeing that the coffer wasn't directly behind the door, but there's the small hallway in the back. At this point, my connection lagged, and my invis ran out, 3 tonberry's immediately start kicking the crap outta me, defeated, I just withdrew and died. Luckily the WHM hung around (along with the rest of the group) and gave me a Raise III, the PLD kindly informed me that the coffer was in fact in that hallway, so, I ran up in my weakened state, hoping to get outta there sooner, but we're not apparently allowed to open chests in that state. So I wait the few minutes, get the Myochin Domaru, and warp outta there. I for one, do not look forward to going back there, and I certainly don't think I'll be getting a map yet either, another poor sap needs that coffer more then I need a map of that accursed place.

Anyways, hope you guys had a good read, felt I needed to share, plus I'm very happy right now ^-^
Sorry for the length of the "story" >.<;

I also tried the (tab-key/F8) thing, that did nothing useful for me. I more or less had to try and angle the camera so it got stuck in the wall and allowed me to tab through that way...which only worked some of the time anyways.

Tab key
# Dec 02 2004 at 4:57 PM Rating: Decent
Just a note about the "tab-key trick" (tabing through targets to find the coffer).

This trick will not work if you are standing near the coffer and a wall/door separates you. This trick works only when you are in special spots in the map. Where these 'hot spots' are are any person's guess. Being that this is sort of a glitch due to Square's clipping engine and environment creation, glitches are like that. While you are running about, constantly be pressing tab and watch your target pane for green lettering. Eventually, if a coffer is there to be found, tab will fall upon it.

I found my coffer this way. It was in the room with the doll, and I found it using tab-key while I was in a hall way /very/ far away. Almost out of target distance. I managed to keep within range until I tracked it down. My inv was full and I got agro while invis was down (trying madly to clear a space) and died, but I got my AF piece. :)

Good luck!

I dont see why ppl waste gil on prism powder. go lvl ninja to 9 , get tonko ichi and use that as subjob to hunt coffers here....same for castle oztroja. 8k for 99 shinobi is alot cheaper than 6k for 12 prisms :)

Just wondering if a THF could pick the locks on the 2 doors where u need the Uggalepih key and the prelate key with a skeleton key? would this work?

I have 4 prisms left and i have no clue how i'm going to get out without training the nice jp pt that cured me and saved me a few times..anyway i'm not sure what to do...i'm running real low on prisms should i chill in safe room or use up what i have trying to find coffer?

Long positive story...

After reading all the different post I was really concern about this quest. So I started looking at web sites for hints, maps, everything I could check about it. I decided to wait until I was level 57 or 58 before trying to get the item.

Everything changed last night when three linkshell buddies who knew I had to do this decided they wanted to do it now. A RDM75 (who knew all the coffer possible locations), and THF63 and a PLD58 or 59 (don't remember right now).

We started out trip to first get the coffer key. After about 10 kills we get in one drop (coffer key, prelate key, unlit lamp). RDM decides to go check the "easy spots". With me invisible and he opening the doors, we check all the possible places. He even killed the guardian to get to the other "not so easy spots", but no luck.

We decide then to get the Uggalepih Key to access the hard areas. We tried in the same location with no luck as the coffer key. At this point the THF had to leave. We move to a different area to kill cutters). We got the key after 6 or seven kills.

So we start again checking all the easy areas with no luck, killed the guardian (he did ^^), check the not so easy areas, no luck either. Only two places left to check.

He uses the Uggalepih key, no luck in the first area.

He says that is going to be hard, the last area to check is a death trap. We plan for him to get all the aggro and warped out while I tried to get to the coffer. At this point I am tired, sleepy and shaking...lol

He opens the door, and we get in. No problems yet. I see the coffer and start running towards it, he then invis himself and stays close to me. The coffer is alone with a mob close by. I remove invis, use the key, get my prize! A mob just move beside me but it is not looking at me!!! My friend keeps telling me to warp out, but I forgot to equip my warp club and need to wait 30 secs before I can warp. So I decide to use invis (prism powder) again.

After that we just walked (I mean run) out of there with no one following us. It was great!!!

Thanks to my LS friends for helping me with this.

Gather round boys and girls, and listen to the story of a pissed Samurai.

Right, well start off this AF coffer i so f***ing hard its insane, much respect to those who have got it. I spent 100k just getting the key. A lvl 75 JP Thf named Vaha helped me get it. 3 Fights and i got it. Then comes the hard part. I ask her to help me find the coffer and she says ok. We go looking, luckily she knows every spawn cause i didnt. (knew a couple) We look for a little, even get past the one door with the Temple Guardian. Nothing, no chest at all. So im like ok ill come back later and try. Several trips and stacks of prism power later i still dont have it. Been about 3 weeks since i got the key. I live in Florida and with all the hurricanes keep losing power so thats why its taking so long. First couple trips in i get aggro and just barely make it out with my warp scroll. I recently bought a Ryl Army Mantle so im running a little low on cp. I went back today, now having the trick to open door without aggro. As soon as i zone in i do a single shout, i keep a tell saying "Aight give me a sec" i meet up with them and they realize they misunderstood me. They thought i needed some other door open and were trying to get some Wespe drop for their friend. So i keep going thinking "w/e". I check all the doors and double check a few. i am sitting in the safe room and i asked the person who sent me the tell how to get past the door with the Temple Guardian, knowing theres a couple in there. She says i need to kill it... i am 58 atm and the chances of me soloing a VT are VERY slim. To end our story i am sitting in the safe room talking with my ingame finacee and LS saying this is pissing me off when i get aggro... I guess i was too close to the door. (was in the middle of room) I warp out and end another horrible trip to Temple of Uggalepih.
~End
MWAUHAHAHAHA... their never is an end to anything. Sooooo.. lets continue where we left off. I was lvling my thf to sub for sam and some sam comes up to me and said he got a good laugh outta my story. He asked me if i ever got it and unfortunately... i didnt. BUT there is a happy ending.. i got a Haubergeon sooooo F*** you you god **** mother ****ing coffer. =)

OMG, this AF was a nightmare. Took about a week to get the coffer key cause help was a pain in the *** to get. And another week to get help to the coffer, we needed both keys, was me 57SAM and a 75THF was kinda enough to help me. But in the end he died trying to get me to the coffer alive, so i'm feeling kinda ****** bout that I wonder how much exp he lost cause he HPd. anyways got this in 2 weeks of searching for help, was hell though too cause theres mobs everywhere. Alls i did to help was print out every map on the links in an above post, and went to the area where they spawned and shouted for help and/or searched for people in there to help me, most of them were "too busy" to run around helping me open doors. Eh o well I got my piece and im happen, now to get AF3 :x

i just went in with my 55thf/nin to pop a coffer for a map since i need to do my af here for smn and a ls friend needs it for sam too. . its not really that hard. you just wait till the mobs not looking drop invis and recast then highlight door and open it before invis finishes beieng cast. (the tonberries have horrable site) the guys directions above is pretty good and the layout is pretty simple in there. i think somepeople make this way harder then what it actually is. even when i went to pop the coffer i stood at it till the tonberry gaurding it was looking at the wall beside me then. opened it, turned around cast invis, open door before casting finished and then waved goodbye to him ^^ and continued to look around some more ^^

This coffer is givin me such a freakin headache. I went to go get the key with a 55 NIN, 56 DRK, 57 SAM (me), and a 51 WHM. We hunted the key for about 2 hours since it took us about 5-8 minutes to kill off bees and the occasional tonberry. We finally got the key to drop and decided to try to find the coffer. OMG! This place is a freakin nightmare! We spent the next 6 hours searchin, trainin, and dying. I got stuck in the room with the Manipulator since I ran out of powders and was hiding in the corner like a scared puppy. My whm friend couldn't invis me since he decided to go check another spot and the door closed on him >.< So after another hour of waitin for someone to open the door, I decided to warp back and give it another shot in the morning. So wish me luck....

I found my coffer the other day finnaly after many painful days of trying. I would sit in the "safe room" (H-8) most of the time and hope for the coffer to pop. Since I was solo and couldn' get anyone higher then 60 to help opening the other doors was a pain. I finnaly found the coffer in (G-8) and used the run in suicidly method argoing 3 tonberrys, opened the chest and and used my warp scroll with 3 tonberrys and 2 elemental pets hitting me, I ended up back in Jeuno with 201/1139 HP.

Anyway this coffer is a pain yes, but can be found solo. Odd I got the key when I was 54 and finnaly found the coffer at 58.
