Rahal wants you to gather information regarding the attacks on the Royal Knights.

This quest requires a bit of running around to get started, just like AF2.

First, speak with Rahal in Chateau d'Oraguille for a cutscene. Then speak with Ceraulian in Port San d'Oria. This will trigger another cutscene in which Brugaire asks you to find the helmet of the last Dragoon for him in Kuftal Tunnel.

Next, head to Kuftal Tunnel and find a Kuftal coffer key. The keys drop from Cave Worms, Deinonychuses, Haunts, Recluse Spiders, Robber Crabs, Sand Lizards and Scavenger Crabs, which are fished.

Coffer chests spawn on the first map (with the zone to Western Altepa Desert) at H-7 and H-6, and on the larger second map at K-11, G-9, H-9, J-7, J-8, I-4, F-6 and D-9.

Open the chest to receive a key item, Challenge to the Royal Knights. Bring this back to San d'Oria and speak again with Rahal. After a cutscene, go talk to Balasiel, the NPC that gives you the PLD flag quest, in Southern San d'Oria. After speaking with him you must go back and speak to Rahal one more time. At this point Rahal will tell you that you need to find the helm of the last dragoon, and that your wyvern should be able to sense where it is.

Now you need to gather your alliance and head to the Temple of Uggalepih in Yhoator Jungle. Something to note before you go, you will need your Wyvern out to spawn the NMs, so to be safe I recommend not calling it till you are ready to spawn the NMs, just incase you die. Make your way to F-10 and walk through the granite doors into a room in F-11 (this room is not on the map). Only Invisible is needed to make it to this room safely, but you may find it easier just to clear the tonberries on the way. If you do this, call for help as you fight them so as to not build hate with them (as the more hate you have the more their move "Everyone's Grudge" will do). Clear out the tonberries, bees and doll in F-11 and then you are ready to spawn the 2 NM shadows. Have everyone get a good distance away from the ??? (the one of the floor, not the wall, as this one is "just a beehive"), Call your wyvern, get a Sneak and hit the ???. Your wyvern will react and Cleuvarion M Resoaix and Rompaulion S Citalle will spawn. Run back to your alliance and single pull the shadows for a real easy fight.

After the shadows are dead, all the dragoons in attendance need to touch the ??? again, which will start a cutscene (best cutscene I have seen in the game so far). At this point you will receive your Drachen Armet and the title of "Paragon of Dragoon Excellence."

On a side note, returning to Ceraulian in Port San d'Oria when you are done will trigger a short cutscene with Brugaire. Its not necessary, just another part of the storyline that I found interesting. Also next time you speak to Rahal he will once again thank you for solving the mystery behind the last Dragoon.

Has anybody noticed a problem with Sneak not working in this quest? Tried this last night with a couple friends(probably not my friends anymore though...we all died). Called my Wyvern and used a Silent Oil then went to check the ???. Then BAM, instant agro through my Sneak (still had Sneak icon on so I didnt know they agroed me til i got back to party and they hit me).

Did SE change how the NMs react in this quest with the last update like the bastards so like to do with stuff or did I find one of those freaky game glitches. Gonna try this again tonight only I'll have a mage hit me with Sneak spell instead of using Silent Oil. Maybe Oil isn't good enough. Anyway I'll let you know how it turns out so others can avoid this potential problem in the future.

Tried this again and it turns out that the NMs can detect you through Silent Oil but not Sneak spell. So for any of you other Dragoons doing this make sure you have a mage spell you and don't rely on the Oil. This might be a glitch so I'm gonna submit it to SE and see if they can do anything about it. This might be happening in other cases too.

Got my Armet this time through too ^.^ wooohooo
easy fight

ok this NM is SUPER easy w/ correct planning.
Pty set up:
58 drg/rdm (me)
55 drg/war
59 nin/war
60 smn/whm
we had to fight them twice for both me and the other drg, but both times we cleared the room, casted sneak and spawned the NM. and had the smn carby pull.
first time:
Ninja tanked VERY well. only got hit a few times, easy fight, shadow went down easily. np at all.
second time:
well first off we all died thanks to a dumb mistake made by yours truely (lol) so i had a 75 pld friend come down to raise our asses/help us second time, so pld ended up tanking next fight. we cleared the room, other drg snuck and spawned the shadows, smn carby pulled. ect ect.
well let me say mighty strikes hurts BAD. Pld's hp got into the red when me and the smn got lagged up. Luckily he didnt die, but that fight was MUCH easier w/ a 59 ninja compared to 75 paladin. Migthy strikes takes its toll if you lag enough.
In the end, very very very easy fight if planned well.

This nm hits hard so bring a tank thats prepared also id recommend no lv lower then lv60 to tank. Also I recommend taking the secondary nm first because it kept disappearing on us right after we killed the war and the cs didnt happen for me but it did when we killed both. Well good.
Fight once

Helped a friend do this on the weekend, as this is not a key item fight, you only need to pop and defeat the NMs once for any number of dragoons to get their AF. Just have one check the ??? first, fight, then have them all re-examine the ??? and they will get their cutscene.

Died Trying to find the Chest >_<
# May 02 2005 at 10:18 PM Rating: Decent
Well I went last night I died twice in Kuftal Tunnel looking for the chest >_<
1st death: Forgot Tigers Agro to sight >_<

2nd death: Guivr popped and started running in my direction, I dont think I got agro from her, I was just out of range, but i still ran my *** off anyways, I freaked out so much that I didnt notice Sneak wore off... and um yeah, 10 crabs linked.. -.-

Best thing is that I only lost 600xp in total from both deaths, I love Raise III ^_^

So I went for another run again and the rock that pops near where the tigers are, popped just as i walked through, now im stuck and i had to log >_<

{/sigh} I'm logged 10 feet away from lvl 70+ Tigers... -.-

I think S-E is out to try and kill me cus I died twice in 30 mins and only lost 600xp...

75 NIN, 75 SAM, 73 RDM, 60 DRG
Guess which one is me.... ok well, we get there, the nin has already cleared out the spot. I'm like should we sneak pop it, and they're like nah... and i'm like.... um.... ok w/e. So the 75Sam/Rng takes the 1st one down in about 30 seconds. (2 hour is fun). Then the nin doesn't even get hit, while me and the sam take down the 2nd. Good times... Took 3 minutes. Repentance for being screwed over so many times already.
Different Job?

Hello, I'm wondering if another DRG pops it, could I go as my PLD and still get the completion CS? Thanks in advanced, I really don't wanna have to get someone else to tank if I can. =P

This fight is pathetic.

I am only a 59 pld/war and both of these guys were only doing 60-70 dmg to me per a hit.

Consider DRGs lucky as this is REALLY easy.

Now finding a party is another story...

Just did this quest. You don't even need a full party. Mine was:

DRG/RDM 59/27
RDM 64
RDM 6?

Enter the temple where it is labeled on the Yhoator map (J-11, up the ramp, behind the tree). This will put you on the first map on this page:

at I-6. Simply go to the black square (f-10, through the granite door at f-11).

We did what many of the posts here said, snuck me, I clicked the ??? and ran back to the group, we carby pulled the WAR. We killed the WAR with 0 problems. I never needed to popa healing breath. The PLD used invincible when the mob used Mighty Strikes.

The THF despawned while we were fighting the WAR. I went up and clicked the ??? again and got the cutscene. ^^

Well I did this yesterday with a group of my friends and we had no trouble getting there or killing the NMs, but when I was viewing the cutscene the scene just froze! I could /tell people as normal, everything was fine except I was stuck in the cutscene. So I got a friend of mine to call a GM, who tells me "Alright, you're free from the cutscene. It happens sometimes, but you're gonna have to do the quest again."

...Total BS. I mean c'mon! We did everything, we went all the way to the temple, fought the things, and we have to do it again. Now I've gotta wait longer ...
easier said then done

RE: hmmm...
# Apr 02 2005 at 1:55 PM Rating: Decent
it isnt a quest therefore it wont show up under quests--->artifact because its not a quest lol
i think its really hard because of the bombs aggro'ing to magic and the tricky map. I got key in 20 mins and coffer in 1 and 1/2 hrs.

Did this with 1 PT

Pulled 1 at a time, very easy fight~ This is certainly one of the easier AF3s. Let the NIN tank DDs carefully and u got no problems.

Did this again last night with 6 people, so simple. I'd say another 2-3 min fight. The longest part was waiting for PD to wear off since we had no blm. Easiest AF3 that I've ever done.
My Experiance
# Dec 19 2004 at 7:39 PM Rating: Decent
This fight is SO Easy, its like repentance for all the **** Dragoons have to go through. I myself took a party of 6 on this fight, lvl 75 BLM, 64 PLD, 60 NIN, 58 WHM, 58 DRG, and 56 DRG (me). Now we were planning on using the sneak trick, but the other DRG pulled & they both aggro'd, probably because he didn't run back until AFTER they spawned, but we still won without much difficulty, a couple 2hrs were used yes, and after such the WHM died (sorry), but other than that, these NMs are pitiful, I swear the Cutscene afterwards lasted longer than the fight. We had a lvl 60 SAM that was gonna come along too but we ran into problems with him not getting invisible so he had to disband & we condensed to one party.

RE: room?
# Oct 28 2004 at 3:56 PM Rating: Decent
That black box around the room is the one you want. You do not need a key to enter this room. It is a granite door. Depending on the levels in your party you will likely have to clear out the tonberries outside the door as well as inside since you need to drop invis to open it.

Did this last night with 4 people over 58 and highest at 62 i think, the rest were mid 50's. I think we had around 13 people.

Quite easy, neither fight was much of a challenge. Took all of 3 mins to kill both NM's
Finally Finished This AF

It was funny how we finished it. We had an 18 person Alliance, which was funny, some were high lvls and some around my lvl. When we got to the room, we wiped out everything for TP. Even the crawlers we wiped out b/c they were Rumbler Crawlers. Our Alliance surrounded the spawn and we just went head on like there was no tomorrow. We killed Cleuvarion M Resoaix first and somehow one of the Dragoons died, which was odd. After that shadow died, Rompaulion S Citalle was next and had only 1/2 HP left. It was mass overkill and carnage. Plus, fun too. Hope u guys that are doing this, have much fun as I did.
