Summary

Bring back three gold beastcoins if you want to learn how to rid yourself of the Tonberries' rancor.

Walkthrough

Talk to Magephaud to start this quest. He will offer to spill the beans about the dangerous Tonberry attack "Everyone's Grudge" if you trade him 3 Gold Beastcoins. Buy them at the local Auction House or bring them with you to Norg. When you trade them to him he will tell you how to reset the damage done by "Everyone's Grudge" and give you a key item: Tonberry Key.

Take this key and some gil (up to 6,000) to a sealed door at (F-11) on the first map of Temple of Uggalepih (see this map for reference). Talking to the Tonberry Priest inside gives you the option of resetting your accumulated tonberry hate to zero for a price and thus minimizing the damage done by "Everone's Grudge' for a price, depending on your tonberry hate.

Your tonberry hate is essentially equal to the number of tonberries you or your party has killed since the last time you reset your hate, so doing this quest is essential for surviving later Zilart or Nation Rank missions, or if you ever go coffer-key hunting for Summoners and Samurai.

I have been trying to trade this npc the 3 gold coins for a day now.
One at a time 3 at a time.
Talk to him, rezone talk again, try trade again . NO LUCK!!
He keeps saying ask him if I have trouble with tonberries,
but then he says
something like "you look like your doing fine on your own". >.<
I have done ZM3, and have killed ton berries,
including the NM Soza, and Have a paint brush. So what gives.
I know I need to reset hate but seems I can't.
Any one have any help out there?

you have to have Tonberry hate in order to do this quest. Go kill lots of tonberrys then he'll give you the key.

just in case you dont know yet F-11 (for those with no map) is a doughnut shaped square the door you need is on the wall of the "doughnut Hole" not on the side walls. when you target it, it has no name

And you should see an NPC Green dot on your radar when you get close enough. I am a thief so i also see mob dots, so I don't know if all jobs get to see NPC dots.

I was doing a ZM mission that involved fighing 3 Tomberrys. I had a level 75 Ninja friend that would tank for us and within 1 min of fighing the first Tomberry while the others were slept my friend drops dead and soon after we all died.

Everyone in the party was like O.O , ROLF or OMFG. so I check the history and see that Everyone's Grudge hit him for around 35000 Damage!

He used to farm the Tomberrys alot and didn't think he needed to clear hate becuse he had shadows to take the hits for him.

After seeing that much damage knowone cared that we got creamed.

I've seen Fenrir take a 57k one. Also, I assume it is Everyone's RANCOR, not Grudge. Rancor does about 10x the damage of Grudge, and only Grav'iton uses it I think.

I myself tried soloing some weak tonberries earlier and got grudged for 860 damage.. I imagine it's time I did this quest >_>.

I'm now on ZM4 but I've never even seens a tonberry let alone killed one. lol I'm a lvl 60PLD so I havn't yet killed for coffers here. Question: Should I go out and kill a tonberry just to get hate just to get the key just to reset hate if I have to kill a tonberry during zm4? I know this sounds so stupid.

And to make sure this kill isn't the same thing you get from the cheifest in Kazham "Sarcrifial Chamber Key"?

If you have not killed any or was in a party that killed any Tonberries then there is no need to reset your hate. No kills means no hate. Previously mentioned in another post...If you do fight them and you (or your party) do not want the drops simply call for help. Calling for help on a Tonberry makes it so you (or your party) do not get any hate whatsoever.

So dont waste your time or gil reseting hate until you actually killed a bunch of Tonberries.

I think he/she was trying to say should they acquire some hat just so that they can do the quest so they have the option of reseting hate in the future. If thats what you are asking i would say not to bother because after the first few ZM's you don't have a hell of a lot of reason to go there so your hate will not matter.
So how does it work?
# May 27 2005 at 11:45 AM Rating: Decent
Do you have to physically kill the tonberry to get hate or just be inside the party? So for example if it was a White Mage there, would he gather hate if he never struck the tonberry?

if you are in the party, you get hate.

if you don't want hate, call for help before it dies.

I had only been one or maybe two coffer key hunting parties at the temple and I still got one-shoted for 1,587 dmg when doing ZM4.
So, reset the hate beforehand or you are committing suicide.Smiley: banghead

Here is a humourous yet sobering example of why this quest really must be done.

Doing ZM4, we asked our level 72PLD tank if he had done the quest to reset hate mid-battle. He said yes. Moments later, he was dead-- struck down by a 14k damage attack. He had done it...but never reset.

So please... Respect the tonberrys. >_>

I was unable to get this quest today, and i had tonberry hate. It turned out i didnt have enough Norg fame. I had done SAM quest, and ZM1-3 but not much else. I did the zinc ore a couple times in bastok and turned in 72 yagudo necklaces in windy and i was able to get this quest.

Keep in mind if you call for help on the Tonberry
it will not count towards your hate so when your running to den of the rancor to do zm4 just call for help if someone gets aggro^^

I would have to say no. I have reset my hate since doing ZM runs, and everytime I fight Tonberry's, I always call for help. I tested out to see if it actually did anything once, and I only took 5 DMG (killed one Tonberry to see if the DMG would be there). So, I would say that /help still applies when you don't want to accumulate hate.

The quest itself is over once you get the key item "Tonberry Key" by giving the guy 3 Gold Beastcoins. It also hands out the title "Honorary Doctorate, Majoring in Tonberries".

Once you have that key item, you can reset your Tonberry hate at any time by going and paying gil at that one place in Uggalepih. You don't need to redo the entire process each time you want to reset hate.

And yes, it does cost more gil the more Tonberries you've killed, but suffice it to say that if the gil cost is hefty (like the previous example of 2500 gil), you'll be glad you reset your hate because "Everyone's Grudge" would probably one-shot you.

Minimum cost is 250 gil (unless you have absolutely no Tonberry hate because you just reset it, in which case he says as much and doesn't charge anything).

Technically only really necessary for tanks, but it's a good idea for anyone who suspects they may ever get hate.

Also note that you cannot start this quest until you have some Tonberry hate to begin with, so go out to Yhoator and kill a wimpy Tonberry there before trying to start the quest, if you've never killed any Tonberries before.

(And you don't get any hate for killing called-for-help Tonberries. If you don't want something they drop, call for help and save yourself the hate.)

Be warned, this quest charges you GIL based on your tonberry hate, i did Zilart mission 4, 3 of us had to pay 250 gil, and the pld (who helped with smn coffer key) had to pay 2500 and so did the samurai

thats not that bad, shelling out the 3 gold coins will be the only remotely costly part, then again, a chocobo in fenrir has known to cost upwards to 3k sometimes =/
