Summary

Somewhere on the island of Zepwell lie the remains of an ancient temple.

Walkthrough

You are to collect seven elemental fragments from Cermet Headstones scattered across Vana'diel. Four headstone will spawn Notorious Monsters upon touching. A balanced party of level 65+ can handle all of these except maybe the Sanctuary of Zitah one, which may need additional healers.

When doing these fragments, BE SURE YOU HAVE SELECTED "YES" to get it. Some people just touch the headstone but accidentally don't get the key item.

Headstones with NM fights

Thunder

Location: Behemoth's Dominion
Go to G-9, clear the area, and have one person touch the stone. Two Legendary Weapon NMs will appear. It is possible to pull one at a time if the person touching the stone has sneak. Pull either one and just kill. For some strange reason, one may despawn and you can get the fragment after killing only one (at least that's what happened for me).

Fire

Location: Ifrit's Cauldron
Enter Ifrit's Cauldron from G-6 in Yhoator Jungle. Sneak/Invisible everyone and head to H-8. Beware the bombs aggro to magic and detect by sight. After the map change, head to D-12. Then head to J-8. There'll be a Flame Spout before being able to go to J-8, either wait or use an ice cluster. You'll probably have to kill the bomb if you're using a cluster. Make sure to have Stun ready in case of Self-Destruct. After J-8, go to E-7, then G-7. There'll be 2 more Flame Spouts and there may be an NM named Ash Dragon at around G-9. It is possible to stick to the walls and walk past him. After that, head to the exit to Yuhtunga Jungle at C-7. Here's a rundown of getting to Yuhtunga Jungle from Ifrit's Cauldron: G-6 > H-8 > D-12 > J-8 > E-7 > G-7 > C-7

After entering Yuhtunga Jungle, go to K-7 through a one of the tunnels under the waterfall. The headstone is at L-6. Touching the headstone will pop two Opo-opo NMs, Carthi and Tipha. Both monkeys will aggro even with Sneak. If you trade a Garnet to the headstone you can get an Opo-opo Necklace.

Wind

Location: Cape Teriggan
Go to F-7 to a cave, then head to H-5 from there. This doesn't show on the map so just hug right all the way from F-7. A Shadow NM named Axesarion the Wanderer will pop after touching the headstone. Beware of Dimensional Death as this NM likes to use it. Have someone ready to sleep the goblin that wanders around here. Trading a Rain Lily to the headstone will give you a Flagellant's Rope.

Light

Location: Sanctuary of Zi'Tah
This is by far the hardest NM fight compared to the others. Go to J-9, then I-7(or to make it easier, just hug left from J-9). A flesh type NM called Doomed Pilgrims will pop. This NM can hit pretty hard, so make sure to have everyone heal the tank. This fight is MUCH easier with Ninja and/or Summoner. It is very weak to magic.

Non-NM Headstones

Ice

Location: Fei'Yin
Go to G-9 to head downstairs, then head to I-5 to enter the Cloister of Frost, the headstone is right behind the crystal.

Alternate Ice Method: If you have a level 15+ Summoner and sufficient fame for a mini-tuning fork of Ice from Northern San d'Oria, you can instantly warp to the Ice headstone, skipping Fei'Yin entirely, and then use a warp scroll/spell *or* defeat the low level avatar *or* suicide warp to get home.

Water

Location: La Theine Plateau
Enter the canyon in F-6 from the east side and go down to enter Ordelle's Caves at F-7. Make a left and go to I-6. Then head to H-9. After climbing all the way up, go to H-12 and drop down the hole. Then go to I-11. After the map change, exit at G-10 to La Theine Plateau. The headstone is at G-11.

Earth

Location: Quicksand Caves
Enter Quicksand Caves from Western Altepa Desert at J-9. Once inside, go to K-6 and drop down the hole and exit to Western Altepa Desert. Go to H-9 in Western Altepa Desert to find the headstone.

Upon finishing this mission, you will receive the message: You now have all 8 fragments of light!

Yeah definitely if you are too FAR from the headstone after you fight the NM, you will not get it, and you have a 15 minute window after ToD to get it, if not, you have to fight AGAIN

Setup for the fight in Sanctuary of Zi'tah

75 sam/dnc
75 bst (cactuar pet)
64 whm (me)

I heard this fight was hella tough so I figured I'd just help the sam tank since 75 pld wouldn't do much damage and this particular samurai happens to be awesome.

Sam used a tavnazian taco. Fight went smoothly, basically the bst popped it and they duo'd it while i hasted and regen II'd...I think I used 1 or 2 cures, total, with the sam using his /dnc abilities to cure himself occasionally. For a while the cactuar pet was tanking, very well, though i didnt check its HP.

No deaths, including bst's pet. Fight lasted maybe 5 or 10 mins, tops.

Also, I found the most difficult one to get to was the yuhtunga jungle one...I died twice on the way because of my own stupidity/sneak wearing, but I wasn't stupid enough not to have RR2 up. :P

NOW ON TO ZM6!!! :D

Good luck to you.

The trickiest one was Cape Terrigan for us. Duo'd that with another RDM(who was way better geared than I was. Dalmatica, joy, etc). There is a bandit that pops a bit from the stone, but there is also a Goblin Mercenary that will pop there too. So you can slept that one. I imagine this to be very tough solo :/, the NM gets harder and harder as it's close to death and DD wipes all shadows(could have sworn it was 1 shadow..it was taking all of hers). Plus the adds.

Ifrits was only bad because of the Ash Dragon. The opos have enparalyze lol but hit like girls.

ZM6, trio'd this with BRD, NIN RDM(me). ES sleepga will help, and it appears they can be slept well without ES afterwars. I had no problems with crowd control.

Axesarion the Wanderer
Pretty straight forward fight. Shadow uses Dimensional Death. Should take a party of at least 3 75s. tank, DD, healer. Careful of the goblin bandit that may spawn behind you before your done. During our fight a goblin popped up behind, and then the Redmage casts Sleep II. Further down 1 Paladin uses Invincible (we took 2 paladins because one needed supplies quest). DD monk steady and surely takes him down, careful not to take hate as the DD attack can take down someone without decent defence quickly.

setup:
2pld/war 60+
rdm/blm 73
mnk/war 75

We took it down easily, however the Monk (myself) did take a lot of hate and ended up dieing, had he had /nin he would have lived. We finished the fight with the mnk weakened (scary), then everyone took the fragment. In hind sight the rdm could have went /whm for more healing and teleport. Thanks to the Goblin bandit that awoke while the monk was weakened the whole party fell to his bomb toss. A lovely screenshot was taken of the 4 bodies laying in front of the headstone, how fitting.

good advice for the zitah nm: take a ranger with you! mob is weak to light so holy bolts are the key! did 280 dmg a shot and slug shot for 1700. it was down pretty easy and i tanked to most time
soloing this
# Aug 18 2007 at 9:54 PM Rating: Decent
Well I have started on a personal quest to solo this whole mission, so far..hehe as a 73nin/war

First to go down were the weapons in qufim island. And they were a complete and utter joke, I wish I could have fought the other one for fun becaus the first one didnt have sh*t on me. Couldnt hit the side of a barn if it wanted to once debuffed even its whirl of rage attack (only used twice, usually used smite of rage) never took more than one shadow due to its accuracy. Next one I went to was Axesarion the Wanderer (NM shadow in cape terrigan)

The fight with axesarion took about 13min (used zerk 3 times and 3rd wore off rigt before I killed so 5+5+3)

The gear for both fights so far was I went for heavy evasion setups to be safe since I didnt know what to expect. I could have swapped out a number of pieces for DD on the dancing weapons but for the shadow it was valuable due to the chance you could lose 3 shadows at once to a DD so being able to keep Ni on reserve was very handy.

fudo x2
scorp harness
gold earring+1 x2
yasha tekko
bomb core
sniper's ringx2
amemit mantle
warwolf belt
chivalrous chain
ninja hakama (for evasion)
fuma sun-ate

started fight at around 16:00 game time but meh, I think I could of dropped the hakama for my ryl khts pants and still been ok but it was very nice to be able to straight tank him using ichi only with the occasional need for Ni when he gets lucky with dimensional death. For food I ate sushi just to make sure I hit as many as I could so acc was capped (almost never missed)

One thing is the gobs can be dangerous, I fought him back behind the stone so with being high level and I think having stealth (ninja attribute) worked a lot in my favor becayse they did not agro me, their respawn time is only a matter of minutes and there are 2 spawns that are kind of close to the stone so be careful.

As for other things he only got 2 attacks through, one was a luck dimensional death where all the hits hit and i only had one shadow left. dealt me 170dmg, then one more with a lucky dbl attack(which he doesnt do often) hit me for another 150 or so. drank two hi-pots I had just to be safe but in the end it didnt matter. Just keep your debuffs (para/slow/blind, especially blind) and he will go down easy. good luck :) Both these times I had zerk up so in the end he really doesnt hit that hard.

I did however notice him getting a little more...fiesty near the end. When he was like <10% or so he seemed to hit faster but in the end it wasnt much of an issue just kept him debuffed. Oh and I did try it out since it said he was weak to fire, our fire ninjutsu dealt little dmg, even debuffing with the weaker ninjutsu first it didnt do much more than one katana swing so I stopped trying. Now I suppose if you had some gear swap macro for +int and ninjutsu skill you might be able to get decent dmg from it but I dont think its necessaryt, just stay calm and pay attention you will do just fine.

due to a stupid mistake a made, unrelated to this mission I burned my 2hour, so will be trying the other two tomorrow, guess we will see just about bad that bag of flesh can be >.>

*edit* added more info about Axesarion fight.

trio'd the zitah nm as 68rdm/33nin(me), 75rdm/37nin, and 75whm/37smn.
pretty tough fight.. took 7-10 minutes.. We ended up killing it , at one point its double and triple attacks got me down to 94 hp.. i took hate with a 523damage spirits within. other rdm converted while i had hate. he took hate back and i converted for fun. just in case we needed more mp.
the nm in cape was easy same trio.
and the 2 weapons we too easy too. had same trio plus a 75 nin with us.
just need ifrits cauldron now.

ZM5 Quicksand Caves Cermet Headstone
# Dec 17 2006 at 3:54 PM Rating: Decent
This information was helpful until I got to the Quicksand Caves part of the instructions. I know others have had difficulty with this as well so thought maybe this would help. Says to drop down hole and exit to West Altepa, go to H-9 in West Altepa to find headstone. NOT! There is alot more!

After you zone back to West Altepa subsequent to dropping down the hole:

1. Do not go back up to desert
2. Go to I-8 where you'll see Ruby Column.
3. Enter there and follow path to an open square.
4. Head south in the square and go through open doorway and you'll come to opening at I-8.
5. then head west, then south to H-9 where you will find the Earth Cermet Headstone in an alcove.

Hope this makes things a little clearer and is helpful

Ok I didn't have time to read all the posts--because i'm at work XD, but anyway, was just wondering if anyone else noticed their title change while doing ZM5?

Here's what happened: I only did Altepa headstone before I started the NM fight headstones. We did Behemoth's Dominion, then Ifrit's Cauldron, Cape Terrigan, and last Zitah.

After we killed the Zitah NM, I noticed my title changed to "Bearer of Memories from Beyond" Is this title granted after defeating all 4 ZM5 NMs? I'm not sure, but it seems this is the case. My title before this was Dark Resistant and I did not do any quests/missions before I did ZM5. Did anyone else experience this? It's kind of interesting because I can't find anything on alla or wiki about this title. Just FYI :D Later.

This fight is easily duo'd. Just finished this with lvl 73Rdm/blm <me> and lvl 75 War/nin. The hardest part is getting through Ifrits Cauldron. Once we got to the headstone we built up tp to 300 each. I cast sneak on myself and deodorize. I pop the monkeys. Tipha popped in front of the headstone and Carthi behind the headstone.

War quickly voked Tipha and drew it back towards the waterfall. Tipha went down fast with full tp and Rampage. Went back to claim Carthi and took it out np the both of us.

Went back to headstone got my fragment and my opo necklace as well.

Good luck

Most of these can be soloed by a Ninja. Well, with the help of a healer NPC, but at least you don't have to beg for others to help. I soloed the Tipha/Carthi fight last night (71NIN/WAR), and then for fun went and took a shot at Doomed Pilgrims as well (I posted this in the Doomed Pilgrims thread, please forgive the multi-thread posting).

I fought Axesarion the Wanderer around lvl68, so he was a bit tougher. I probably would have died if the goblin had seen me but luckily he never wandered close enough to the Cermet Headstone to aggro.

Tipha and Carthi were the easiest. Together they eat shadows somewhat quickly, but once I got the first one down the remaining one never hit me.

Doomed Pilgrims was very very difficult. Check his thread for my other post on that one.

I didn't attempt to solo the weapons in Behemoth's Dominion, but that's because my LS slaughtered them after a Behemoth camping. Keep in mind that in all of these, when I say "solo", I mean with the aid of my lvl64 NPC in healer mode.

Best of luck to everyone.
Fire Fragment Story
# Aug 06 2006 at 9:24 PM Rating: Decent
Ok, this started out a total disaster. We go through the cauldron to the tunell, a noob gets agro for the first time and kills 2 of us but we raise ok and go on..... Then a noob rdm (lv 62) gets agro at the flames past the ash dragon and kills the whole pt besides me cause I managed to get to zone (we were just going to get to the headstone then ><). So we get a whm to come and raise, but it took exactly an hour so a lot of people were forced to hp. The WAR who was helping us (ty^^) and the noob rdm both hped and came back together (the other 3 left)...... The RDM gets agro AGAIN on the way and dies so I booted him at that point, lol. So at this stage we were left with 4 people. MNK, WAR, me (DRK) and RNG. We zoned and built 300% tp. and then popped the nms.... with no mages :O I had npc to cure me tho (lv37 XD).

Anyways the WAR dies on the first nm fast (we were all below or at lv70), so I pull a Blood Weapon + Souleater combo and SA + Cross Reaper; overall that took the nm down over 2k, so that one was owned. Then we took the second NM with the 3 of us and won somehow, lol, and got the fire Fragment :D I was like omg, lol, it was amazing. It was an easy fight, even though it took us 3 hours to get to do it after all the drama, lol ><;

NM Opo-opos can't be slept

We found this out painfully, when we were trying for the fire fragment in Ifrit's Cauldron. A blm 73 and a rdm 63 with dark staff tried to sleep one with elemental seal so that we could handle the other opo-opo, but no joy.

We were able to win the fight with no deaths, but because we spent several seconds trying to sleep one of them, our melee people got into the red.

As mentioned below, I suggest spawning the two opo-opos, let a mage bind one of them, then pull the other opo-opo away to fight him. Gravity would be good, if thats available.

We did the fight again for some other LS members and that strategy worked fine.

The real problem was getting to the headstone in the first place.

Janaka.
ZM5 can be duo/trio
# May 09 2006 at 2:21 AM Rating: Good
I just wanted to say that the ZM5 can be completed without a large amount of ppl. Indeed, after being bored of shouting in Jeuno for 3+ hours, we decided to try by our own.
Ifrit part : rdm74/nin blm73/whm. Blm put sneak + desodorize on and pop the NMs. Only 1 monkey poped (O.o, dunno why) so it was a piece of cake for the rdm.
The sanctuary of Zhita(sp) : rdm74/nin blm73/whm blm70/whm. This one took about 30 minutes to kill. The basic strategy was kiting + dot. The NM is easily bindable and we saved gravity for emergency. We just kited it by running around the 3 rocks near the headstone.
Cape terrigan : war75 blm73 sum75 sam73 whm75. Okay...nothing to say here, that was overkill.
Behemot's dominion : blm73 war75 whm75. This one was very close. Blm try to sneak pull with dia... wrong choice, cause weapons probably aggro to magic so we ended up with fighting the 2 weapons at the same time. Blm was kiting the warrior one (wrong choice again), when war + whm fight the rdm one. After 1 minute, blm die while war+whm just finished the first weapon then proceed to kill the second. After a few close calls (warrior's hp going to 100- a few times), he eventually beat it yay !

Apparently you can only use the Mini Tuning Fork of Ice shortcut if you've not *already* beat the Shiva mini-trial.

This seems pointless, as almost nobody will have a SMN 15+ that doesn't have mini-Shiva beat. Maybe the lucky few who actually beat Shiva as a higher job, but.
