Walkthrough

If you are not already on a job over level 30 then change to a job that is at least level 30 to start this quest. Go to the Merry Minstrel Inn in Lower Jeuno and talk to Mertaire then to Bki Tbujhja who will tell you what to do in this quest. Head to the Auction House and buy a parchment (listed under Leathercraft) or you can craft one. Take it and trade it to the Song Runes near the entrance to Bibiki Bay in Buburimu and receive a "Poetic parchment". The quest is complete and you recieve a small amount of gil and you are ready to start the 'Path of the Bard' quest to unlock your advanced job now.

Bard's Quest

1. Find Mertaire, at (I-8) of Lower Jeuno. He should be in the Merry Minstrel .

2. Talk to Bki Tbujhja behind the counter. She will inform you of ancient bard lyrics written on a stone somewhere in Buburimu.

3. Buy a sheet of 'Parchment'. Then go to Kolshushu, head down to Buburimu.

4. Located at Khoonta Dunes at Buburimu, a Song Ruins. Click the ruins for a cut-scene, after the scene, trade the parchment, you'll received a "Poetic parchment".

5. Head back to lower Jeuno, trade Poetic Parchment to Mertaire again for another cut-scene plus a 2100 gil.

6. This time go to Valkurm Dunes at B-7...way back to C-6 its a secret beach.

7. Click on the the Song Runes at B-7 for another cut-scene, you will obtain
3000 gils plus a completion of your quest. You are now a Bard.

When I tried to do this, I kept trading the parchment to the song runes in Buburimu peninsula, and it didn't do anything, so I went back to Jueno, talked to all of the people in the inn 3 times, then went back out there, it still didn't work... Then accidentally double clicked the runes... zomg cutscene and then tried trading, worked fine, need to include the song runes' cutscene in the walkthrough, so much wasted time XD
The quest is not complete

The quest is not complete...After you receive the "Poetic parchment" go back to jeuno and trade the "Poetic parchment" to Mertaire for one more cut scene with Lewenhart an Mertaire after that you will get the 2100 gil and now the quest is complete an you can start the 'Path of the Bard' quest.

I think you get a title before the one listed. I was checking my stats after getting the cutsceen in buburimu and my title was "Researcher of Classics."

Shhhh {secret}

You can make Parchments by using a lightning crystal and a flute. If you are from or in bastok, you can buy a flute from the music shop for less than 100g.

Face SW, do it on watersday, bring a few lightning crystals and desynthesis may result in a number of failures.

Typically, i can get 3 or 4 parchments per stack of crystals, crystals on Remora cost about the same for a stack as a single parchment.

Of course, this may or may not be worth it depending on whether you have a mule in bastok, or are going there for some other reason anyway.

(lvl 2 woodworking)

Hope this helps.
A small correction

Just to clarify as well Parchment is in the AH under leatherworking and Bast parchment is under woodworking. I just didn't want anyone to get confused and try looking for parchment under woodworking. Or worse, buy bast parchment thinking thats what they need lol (Hangs head in shame and looks guilty of this crime.)

Due to the fact that something is wacky with these three quests and how they are worded all ways I am going to give the COMPLETE bard quest.

Path Of The Bard (Flag Quest):

Find Mertaire, the bard in (I-8) of Lower Jeuno. He should be in the Merry Minstrel. He will ramble on about love and the one he has lost...

After, talk to Bki Tbujhja behind the counter. She will inform you of ancient bard lyrics written on a stone somewhere in Buburimu. Knowing this info, head off to Bubu! BUT, buy a sheet of 'Parchment' before you go! NOT bast parchment. (It is found in /Materials/Woodworking)

Once in Buburimu, head down to the western shore of the Khoonta Dunes, and through the shallows to find song ruins. Click on the ruins, and after the cut scene, click on them again. You should get a hint about parchment. Once you do, trade the parchment to the ruins, and then go back to Lower Jeuno, with your "Poetic parchment".

Talk to Mertaire again, and after the cutscene, go to the Valkrun Dunes (you do NOT need a parchment for this trip).

Travel to the secret beach, and click on the 2nd set of ruins, after the cutscene...you will be awarded with gil, and the ability to become a Bard.

Important to mention: you must trade the poetic parchment to Mertaire, I know this may seem like an obvious step to some, but I had someone ask me today "I followed blah blah blah on Allakhazam and I can't get this guy to give me the cutscene", all because he thought you only had to talk to the guy the second time and didn't realize you have to trade him the paper.

A possibly silly but sometimes important piece of information to remember

Thank You Karmakina,
I did just that. Thank goodness for warp cudgels and OP warps. If I could ever get out of this default status I would rate ^up^ .

True, I almost traded it to the guy and thoguht it commonsense to do so but didnt cuz the guide didnt mention it and the other chick still mentioned I should go to valkurm. I gotta learn to follow my commonsense more often. Just wasted a whole lotta time :(

Contradiction?

Just wanted to point out...
This post says:

Grants gil: 2100

". After the quest is over, you recieve 5100 gil (more than enough to buy some beginning bard gear and songs)."

I am sure it is just a typo or something. =D
RE: Contradiction?

Nope, doing the first half of the bard opening quest (EG this particular piece) grants 2100.
WTF!
# May 15 2005 at 4:22 AM Rating: Decent
It just so happens that the Bard quest is ripped up into three parts... why?

Someone needs to put the pieces together please!

Just so everyone knows, this is the Bard Flag Quest. Even though it doesn't say there's a reward, there is. Being a Bard.
