Summary

An adventurer has been attacked while on an investigation to Xarcabard -- and the attacker is said to be none other than the Dark Knight, Zeid! Report to the President's Office for a briefing on the situation at hand.

Walkthrough

Accept the mission from a Bastok gate guard. Then go the president's office in the Metalworks. Talk to Iron Eater for a cutscene!

After the cutscene, head to the Throne Room in Castle Zvahl Keep for a BCNM fight against Zeid. Volker will join your party in battle after a brief cutscene when Zeid is at roughly 65 percent HP. You lose the fight if Volker dies in battle.

Battle notes about Zeid:

  • Zeid can use all great sword weaponskills up to ground strike, which he uses often. He also casts absorb spells.
  • Zeid uses an AoE weaponskill called Shockwave that can sleep everyone. Melees can avoid the effect by staying far enough away. Melee may want to use poison potions.
  • Zeid uses abyssal strike -- a ranged attack that causes stun -- and abyssal drain, which is comparable to the normal drain spell.
  • Zeid appears to have TP regain.
  • Zeid will spawn two mobs called Shadow of Rage, which are as strong as Zeid but have very low HP. They have the same attacks as Zeid. The shadow mobs can be killed with a single -ga spell, but Zeid can recall them later in the fight.

After the fight there is another cutscene. Then head back to Bastok and talk to Iron Eater at the president's office in the Metalworks to finish the mission.

I beat this last night with my PLD 65. Party Config - PLD, RDM, RDM, BLM, MNK, SAM. Took 3 attempts in all, I died the first two times. The Earth Staff seems vital for PLD in this. In the winning battle, after I felt secured with aggro, slipped off Mermaid Ring and put on Chrysoberl Ring in its place (giving me 2 Chrys Rings). When the Shadows appeared (and this seems critical) I popped Invincible... the Shadows were gone maybe 4 or 5 turns later. The mages then did some sort of Light skillchain, baddaboom, Zeid goes down for the count.

Oh, and it's not good to engage Zeid as a PLD... just gives him TP -- you don't want this. Just stand there and hit him with vokes, Flashes, and your usual rep.

First stage mobs: One Galka DRK, Zeid.

Second stage mobs: Zeid & 2 spawned shadows of rage.

A party of 70s is recommended but healers can just about get away with being lower level. A high-level PLD tanking makes this alot easier.

The party must have a solid main tank, an alert and quick-voking backup tank, 2 healers (WHM and RDM ideally) recommended and 2 strong DDs.

The first form is easy to take down... he'll use powerful weapon skills but just keep plugging away at him.

After the second cutscene, DO NOT ENGAGE him and give your mages a chance to recover their MP. Volker will engage on his own after a while so be alert and try to pre-empt him - one WS from Zeid will eat a good 60% of Volker's HP, and Zeid WILL open up with a WS. Have your WHM concentrate on the main tank and your RDM/other backup healer concentrate on volker.

Zeid goes nuts on your tank at the start of this fight, busting out nasty weapon skills such as shockwave (AoE sleep, mages keep out of range) and ground strike. So don't cast Regen III like I did, PLD was regened but sadly dead very quickly on our first try thanks to that mistake >_<

When he spawns the shadows, dispose of them ASAP (RNG and BLM are useful for this, the shadows only have 300-350 HP) and make sure that either one or both of them ARE NOT on your main tank. Why? Because Zeid can use 2 weapon skills in a row. If one of the shadows uses a WS on your tank he will follow up with some GSword WS that I forget the name of to make fragmentation, then he'll use Ground Strike to create a Light skillchain. Don't let him do that, it hurts alot. If it's just him on his own attacking your tank, the best he can manage is fragmentation.

PLD may want to wear Earth staff for this. Ours did and it seemed to make a considerable difference.

The key to winning this BC is having a good solid tank, keeping the shadows off your main tank to prevent the light skillchain, and putting Zeid down before your healers run out of MP. Besides that, standard party stuff.

This BC fight is a cracking good challenge and your 100K, rank 10 and Bastokan Flag reward will feel well-earned.
How we did it

My alliance of 18 (lvls 59-71) all gathered at the Throne Room entrance and separated into teams. It took several tries and several party configs to win. The first winning combination was:

BLM, BLM, WHM, WHM, PLD, MNK

Cutting Zeid down to the cutscene is cake. The part where things go wrong is when his two shadows come out. This, along with keeping Volker alive is tricky. As you can see from the first winning party, they had a healer and backup healer for both the paladin and Volker.

WHM, BRD, PLD, DRK, DRG, WHM

This team had proper healing and good damage dealers. I don't know how they beat the shadows so don't ask. lol.

WHM, NIN, SAM, DRK, BLM, BLM

My turn finally! Our ninja used ninjutsu that made him weak to ice, and our black mages exploited that weakness.

Rank 10, 100 grand in my pocket, and I can have any mithra I want. Pimp.

One side note, remember that if you've got to enlist help from someone that just fought Zeid (victoriously), they have to complete the mission to come back and go again ('-')

I went straight back in again several times after my party won the BCNM. I didn't have to go to Bastok first. Whoever told you that... they were either mistaken or were making an excuse to get out of risking their neck by helping others do something which they themselves no longer need :)

#Anonymous, Posted: Sep 02 2004 at 11:41 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I was jus wondering... why did Zeid become a bad guy? Please whoever have done this already tell me ><
RE: why?
# Sep 06 2004 at 1:35 PM Rating: Default
Zeid is not really a "bad guy." When Volker was made Captain, Zeid took offense because it should have been him that got promoted, so he split town in disgust. This makes Zeid popular among the galka because they can identify with him because of all the hume oppression and greed going on. In this mission, Zeid is portrayed as a bad guy because the state wants him brought in. I won't spoil the rest ('-')

Just out of curiosity, what battle music is used?
Awakening?
Belief?
Or just the regular BCNM Boss Music 1 or 2?

Knew I'd forget something. When you complete this, the final Bastok Mission, you of course receive 100,000 gil and the RA/EX Bastok Flag (Bastokan Flag? I'd have to log on to check and I'm not at my own computer right now) whichs grants Moghancement: Bas. Conquest when you place it in Layout.
