Battle Notes

To begin, trade 20 Beastmen Seals to Shami at (H-8) in Port Jeuno in order to obtain the Rare/Ex item Cloudy Orb. Upon receiving the orb, make your way to the Horlais Peak zone located in the Yughott Grotto dungeon.

Be advised that only three players can enter the battlefield, that their levels will be capped at level 20, and that there is a 15 minute time limit that starts the moment the orb trader enters the battlefield.

Upon entering the battlefield, you will find a large Sniper Pugil flanked on either side by a smaller Archer Pugil. The Archer Pugils have less hp and are generally weaker defensively and offensively than the Sniper Pugil.

  • Neither the Sniper Pugil nor the Archer Pugils perform any tp attacks, as their attack repetoire consists of ranged water based attacks with a powerful knockback effect.

In order to spawn the armoury crate, all mobs in the battlefield must be defeated in the allotted time.

Battle Strategies

The most common strategies for winning this BCNM involves one or more Summoners, the Ramuh avatar, and the Astral Flow two-hour ability.

Solo Method

The first method involves one summoner soloing the BCNM (Preferably on Lightningday and not on Watersday), and is decidedly more difficult than a two summoner method. Upon entering the BCNM, run up the pathway until you are in visual range of the pugils, while making sure to stay outside of their aggro range. After buffing up, use a Yagudo drink and then summon Ramuh.

  • Because Ramuh is a Thunder based avatar, he is strongly resistant to the Water based attacks of the pugils, and his Judgment Bolt bloodpact is especially powerful against them.

After summoning Ramuh, activate Astral Flow and have Ramuh assault the Sniper Pugil. As soon as Ramuh strikes the pugil, have Ramuh use Judgment Bolt and then use an Ether to restore your mp. Then retreat Ramuh and run towards the exit until just prior to the recast time of your Bloodpact Rage resets, in which case have Ramuh re-assault the Sniper Pugil and have him use Judgment Bolt again. If all goes well, the two Archer Pugils will be killed by the second attack and the Sniper Pugil will have very little hp left. At this time, retreat Ramuh again and kite the pugil back up the hill until the recast timer is up, then have Ramuh assault again and use one last Judgment Bolt (or Thunderspark) to finish off the Sniper Pugil.

Duo Method #1

This duo method involves two summoners and is noticeably easier than the solo method. Upon entering the BCNM, run up the pathway until you are in visual range of the pugils, while making sure to stay outside of their aggro range. After buffing up and using Yagudo Drinks, both summoners will then summon Ramuh.

After summoning Ramuh, both summoners will activate Astral Flow and then have their Ramuhs assault the Sniper Pugil. After they both strike the pugil, have the Ramuhs use their Judgment Bolts, killing off the two Archer Pugils and severely weakening the Sniper Pugil. At this time, pop an Ether and wait till the Bloodpact recast timers reset, then finish off the Sniper Pugil with another Judgment Bolt or a Thunderspark.

Duo Method #2

This method is similar to the first, but with notable exceptions. Unlike the first method, only one summoner will use their Astral Flow, while the other just uses Thunderspark. Upon entering the BCNM, run up the pathway until you are in visual range of the pugils, while making sure to stay outside of their aggro range. After buffing up and using Yagudo Drinks, both summoners will then summon Ramuh.

After summoning Ramuh, one of the summoners will activate Astral Flow, then both will have their avatars assault the Sniper Pugil. The Astral Flow summoner will have Ramuh use Judgment Bolt while the other summoner will have Ramuh use Thunderspark, leaving all three pugils below 50% HP and paralyzed due to Thunderspark's additional Paralysis effect. The Astral Flow summoner will then pop an Ether and, once the Bloodpact recast timer has reset, will use Judgment Bolt again. At this time, if the Sniper Pugil is still alive, the other summoner can finish it off with a bloodpact or just allow the Ramuhs to melee its last bit of HP.

I'm a 46 smn and i tried to solo this last night for a friend who came as a 21 blm. I had already suceesufully soloed this twice and was confident i would win. I was doing great got off 2 judgement bolts the 2 sub NMs we4re dead and i was chugging a hi-ether preparing for my final judgement when the archer pugil magically got a 30 dmg increase and went from doing 4 dmg to 34 at the same distance and murdered ramuh. He came after me i was blown out of the clawed area then my friend mumblejumble nuked the last bit of health out of it.
Almost kicked our asses we came out of it with red health and a slight bit richer. Can anyone tell me how the archer pugil magically got the 30 dmg boost?

We went with 2 smn and a sam. The sam had the orb, we smn's just went to kill the pugs. We entered battlefield and ran up and we smn's summoned Ramuh inched our way close enough to send them to attack. After Ramuh's had aggro-ed them, i used Judgement Bolt, the other smn used his Judgement Bolt, it was over. Sam just watched. (We did get hit with one of the water attacks that push you back, but no one was in danger at any moment.) Very easy.
Bad planning

I was tryin to get my mannequin peaces and found a summoner to help me do this BCNM. I thought that we had this in the bag because even if Ramuh went down I would have already got a bit of hate on all the Pugils. (Provoke left, Shield bash right, engage middle.) Then when it got sticky I'd just hit invinsible. Wrong!!

I based this on the assumption that they fought like regular pugils, and only used that water attack on occasion, relying mostly on melee. All they use is that water attack and it goes right through invinsible. Needless to say I died right as Ramuh did and I hit my 2 hour.

I was shocked, I make it a point to get all the best gear just for these situations. Lizzie gear +1 Stamina rings +1 and Power sandles, and they still took me to red in seconds.

So to sum it up, these things cannot be tanked. I don't know how they behave against a blink tank, but a pally WILL get waisted.

I'm gonna see if I can get two summoners to help me and just bolt these guys into fishie heaven.

Thank you for your time.

Hi. I've done this one 3 times now, beat it twiced. (Lost once cuz it was watersday.)

I just wondered how much the mannequin body and thunder spirit pact drop. Both times i got basically the same drops.

1x Mythril Beastcoin (both times)
1x Shall Shell (both times)
1x Mannequin Head (both times)
1x Platoon Cutter (first time)
1x Platoon Mace (Second time)
1x Horde Lullaby (both times)
(I think that is it)

Anyway, I just wondered how often the Mannequin Body and Thunder Spirit Pact dropped.

On my server (shiva) both times i've sold my mann. head for 150k, the body is worth about 400k i believe, and thunder spirit pacts have been going for about 150-160k.

If you know how often those 2 items drop please let me know.

Thank You

Soloed this on Kujata last night as SMN20/BLM10. The old record was 3:05, set by a 2-person group. New record is 2:32, by me. :)

I died the first time I tried. Was strange..

I made a mistake to begin with. Let Ramuh get right to the Sniper Pugil and they all hit him a couple times before I hit the first Judgment Bolt. Ramuh was going to die before Blood Pact was ready, so I ran off to the entrance area. Ramuh died. I resummoned. The fish came and started attacking me. Ramuh disappeared. No message came up or anything. He didn't even get hit, and I had over 100mp. I have no idea why he'd disappear. I died, obviously.

The new plan: Summon Ramuh, chug a drink, hit Astral Flow, THEN Assault, and then when Ramuh gets *half-way* to the fish, Judgment Bolt. Chug a Hi-Ether, start beating on the Sniper, slap Bio on him and wait for Blood Pact to recharge. Clean out the fish-bowl with a second Judgment Bolt. It worked wonderfully. :)

I'll likely start blowing all my seals on this. It's not real big money, but it's a break from camping Leaping Lizzy once in a while. Lol. :p Good luck to any SMN's who give this a shot. :) Good luck to anyone who goes in the intended 3-person PT too. Lol ;D

I have a question about drops in this BCNM.

If you already have a Mannequin Head in your possession, and you solo the BCNM as a SMN, is it still possible for a Mannequin Head to drop?

nope... infact, I thought: "Now that I have a mannequin head, and it will drop me a mannequin piece, it should drop me a body."

Sadly, no... I didn't even get any mannequin pieces. If you are in a solo party, and have the rare item that would normally drop, it will just not be dropped. If you're in a PT that is full of all individuals that have said rare item, then the item will go into the pool before it's removed for not meeting requirements on everyone.

My friends and I go
SMN/WHM (Mithra)
SMN/WHM (Taru)
RDM/WHM (Taru) (me)

The Smn's chug a Pineapple juice at the begining of the fight and as soon as we start to run up the hill, they summon Ramuh. As soon as we get to the top, the SMNs use Astral Flow and then the Mithra uses Judgement Bolt and then the Taru will use Judgement Bolt. That generally kills all 3 pugils, no problem. I stand back at the enterance and first time, I was just casting Fire like normal. Incase I needed my MP/to heal. Then every other time we've done this fight (about 4 or 5 times now) I've done Chainspell Fire. (Fire is the biggest spell I have at that time as a RDM.) Fire does about 50-55 damage a shot. The only time we had problems with this BCNM was when one of the Judgement Bolts got resisted and only did about half of its normal damage. The middle pugil bit the dust, but the two on the side still had about half their life left. So at that point I Chainspelled Fire on one while the two SMNs went in for hand to hand combat with Ramuh with the other pugil. My Pugil died and I was about ready to go attack the other Pugil since I ran out of MP. But we still killed all three and beat the record, again. (Our record). We currently hold the record on the BCNM on Diabolos with like... 1:55 or something. The first time we went, the record was around 3:58 and we dropped the time to 2:30... then down to 1:58 then down to 1:55.

Once i get smn to 20 the 2 of us are probably gonna do it together, and we'll just let loot go to whoevers orb it is. i doubt it's possible to loose with 2 smns. can you imagine 3? Just go in, summon avatar, judgement bolt, done. lol I cant wait to try that.

How about this?

SAM/WAR
WHM/???
SMN/WHM

I ask because I have friends who have these jobs.
Here's the plan: SAM/WAR tanks and uses her 2 hour. SMN magic bursts Diamond Dust off the SAM's self skillchain (distortion) while the WHM tries to keep the SAM alive. Then, summon up Ramuh and bust out a Judgement Bolt one minute later. I would magic burst Judgement Bolt in the first place, but... can a SAM make a Lightning SC at level 20, solo?

I have a major issue with this bcnm. I tried it today [for the second time] since a friend of mine was providing the seals and I was the volunteering smn. We got to holaris and I walked up, summoned ramuh, astral flow'd, and sent ramuh at the sniper pug. I used judgment bolt and then quickly a yag drink. Next thing I know, ramuh is gone and my buddy and I are dead.

Here's the problem. It was lightnings day for one. Second, they were hitting ramuh for about 3-4 dmg per hit. I never released ramuh, the log testifies to this because there was no noting of the equipment change included in my release macro. So, if I didn't release ramuh, and they were hitting him for way too little to kill him, why did he unsummon while my 2hr was on?

This is severely vexing to my friend and I, especially since this is exactly what happened to me last time I did this bcnm solo. Any help is highly appreciated.

The problem is you need to pop the Yagudo Drink -before- using Judgment Bolt. With Astral Flow, Ramuh costs 0mp per tick, but using Judgment Bolt lowers your mp to 0. When you drink your Yagudo Drink before using Judgment Bolt, you're regaining mp after Judgement Bolt hits, and allows you to keep Ramuh out.

On a side note, the only 'scary' day to solo this bcnm is on watersday, and it's still no sweat, unless you're trying for a speed run. After getting your Judgement Bolt off, run like hell for the entrance of the BCNM (away from the pugils) and open your spell list and get ready to summon Ramuh the moment you see his name disappear next to your name and HP bar in the bottom right. Once your second Ramuh is cast, he'll immediately head toward the mob that's attacking you and continue where the original left off. A second Judgment Bolt and you're on your way to fun.

The biggest mistake most people make is not realizing that Astral Flow lasts for 3 minutes, and you only need to use 2 Judgment Bolts in this BCNM. You have time to use Astral Flow, then drink your drink, then actually use the first Judgment Bolt and will be fine on both mp regen as well as Astral Flow still being up when you're ready for #2.

From reading your order of events... you need to drink the Yag drink first before using your 2hr. Why? Because a SMN 2hr completely drains all of your MP in one shot. A yag drink is a form of refresh, by adding that refresh too late after using your 2hr.. you just wasted a yag drink and signed your death away.

Drinking a Yag Drink prior to using your 2hr... keeps your avatar out. Judging by your signiture and being a SMN, you would think you'd know this seen how this fight is no different than a mini-fork fight. Except rushed more. ^.~

RE: wtf...

yea, there's a lvl 20 cap... restricts you to items, spells and abilities lvl 20 and below. Thus you need a MP drink of some sort in order to prevent hitting 0 mp and loosing your avatar.

Futher more, even if you did hit release, I doubt your equip macro would change any equip unless it is a lvl 20 weapon or lower your macro switches to... if you have a light or dark staff equip change in your release macro, then the equip would not change. However, sounds like you lost Ramuh cause you didn't have MP refreshing... learn from your own mistakes, and g/l next time.

This only works for SMNs who are level 25 and higher. Below level 25, such as in this BCNM20, the SMN does not have autorefresh and Ramuh automatically disappears after Judgment Bolt unless a drink is used.

Even with the jobs refresh you would lose Ramuh because he consumes more mp than the refresh would replenish. Next time do it in this order:

Summon avatar > drink mp juice > use astral flow > attack target

We noticed someone had beaten our earlier time of 2:36, so I wanted my record back. I ran in, used my yagudo drink, summoned Ramuh, used 2-hour, and started melee'in the Sniper. Other SMN followed close behind. After his Judgment Bolt, we both started attacking like crazy, both still had Ramuh out.

Finished with a time of 2:07

Did this twice yesterday, solo'd both as 20 smn on lightningday.

The first time, at 55% moon and the start of lightningday, went without a hitch, I did exactly as shown in Nebs' video, got head, platoon gun and bow, shall shell and blaze spikes. The fish were barely touching Ramuh, he ended the fight with a little under half hp.

Second time was 8.5 hours at about 78% moon and nearing the end of lightningday, as I'd had to hurry from an excruciatingly painful pt for my blm in kazham.
Did everything exactly the same, but on the first Judgment Bolt I guess I gave the command a little late as I got a bit of hate and got shot once when i used JB. Didn't matter too much, as Ramuh nailed all 3 and got hate. This time though, either they were hitting a bit harder or for some reason Ramuh had less hp. (I think a bit of both). It seemed like I was gonna make it, but with 3 seconds left on blood pact Ramuh went down and I wasn't able to recast in time, died.

So if this is any indication, as close to mid-moon as you can get is best for soloing.

BTW, for me, the fish were actually Pugils, not Leviathans like Nebs' videos. Did something change in any updates or is there some other explanation? ^^;

Touching on the moon phases:
Moon phases don't seem to affect the battle in any way. I've soloed them at 90% Full Moon, and have been completely anhialated at 57% with 2 a tank to back me up in case Ramuh died. I'm just going to assume that at anytime they are incredibly hard and start killing Ramuh almost instantly that it will most likely drop the Mannequin Body, so it would be wise to calm down, and always bring spare Ethers and Yagudo Drinks.

The pugils attacks will go right through Utsusemi, dealing the damage and knockback. Really all you would need is SMN, if you had to have the NINs you would want one to melee the Sniper right after Ramuh's Judgment Bolt. The other NIN could just wander around and take in the sights...
2 judgment bolts will usually take out the Archers, and with just about any job meleeing the Sniper, the second Judgment Bolt will kill it too. If the Archers live(becuase a Judgment Bolt didn't do as much damage for some reason) Ramuh should still have enough health to tank the little bit of health it has left.

As a summoner, this BCNM is a breeze. As of the time of this writing, I actually hold the record for it, solo, at 2:15.

However, even on Lightningsday and with fairly impressive gear, I've never killed the pugils with just 2 Judgment Bolts.
RE: I did it
# Apr 25 2005 at 6:19 PM Rating: Default
Uhmm... not calling you a liar, but this is nearly impossible to do. First, you'd need a hermes quencher... and even then, you will still probably get over 3 min. The clock starts counting when the first person trades the orb and selects "Shooting Fish". So the clock time includes the short CS animation as well as the run to the platform. Summoning Ramuh takes a few seconds as does a yagudo drink. After this, it'll still take you 5-15 seconds to line up and get Ramuh attacking. First JB, a min later 2nd JB... I would believe 2:35 seconds... but not 2:15. Further more, the clock does not stop till you've opened the chest. Sorry, but a smn duo has to bust *** to get below 2:30 and that's with both smn's using astral flow and standing in the dead center of the arena to wait for the chest.

Mind telling us how you managed to shave a full minute off the time that all other smn's solo it in?

It is true that it is nearly impossible to do, and I firmly believe that it is impossible without using macros. However, 2:15 is very attainable by one person.

There was an ongoing competition between me and another LS member as to whom could trump the other's record. He had held it at the beginning of the week solo; I barely beat it by 2 seconds with a blm friend. Then he soloed it roughly 20 seconds faster than us. When I went to try again, a party of 3 had the record somewhere around 2:31. My next try was roughly halfway between the group and his, so there was no proof of my beating his time. On his next try he died, on mine I used the macros and cut the corners I knew I could, hitting 2:15 and having my name, alone, greet everyone else who tried for the remainder of the week, until the record was reset (which I didn't realize until the time was back up around 3:20 the next time I did it).

Being as I'm not currently on the game at the moment, I don't have the exact rundown of every macro, verbatim, in the macro set I made exclusively for this bcnm, but the following is near exact:

1: /ma Ramuh <me>
2: /ja "Astral Flow" <me>
3: /item "Grape Juice" <me>
4: /pet Assault <t>
5: /pet "Judgment Bolt" <t>
6: /item "Hi-Ether" <me>

For some reason, I believe I used 7 macros, but I can't remember which one I'd be missing.

The run-down of the actual fight:
- Trade the Cloudy Orb to the Burning Circle in Horlais Peak, select "Shooting Fish"
- Type out /ma Ramuh <me> and ignore the red message declaring the action cannot be performed, do not type anything else afterward
- Mash on the button you use to advance through windows of text (X button on the PS2 controller)
- Once camera returns to normal playing angle (be it first person or third), spam hitting spacebar >> up key (in order to insert last line of text) >> enter in order to start casting Ramuh as soon as the game allows, again ignoring the red 'That command cannot be processed' that appears
- Start running forward at about 80% completion of the summon, moving forward a few feet before Ramuh is actually cast, pausing momentarilly while he's casted, and continue running on
- Hit the Astral Flow macro mid-stride while heading toward arena
- Run to the outer lip of the arena and use the Grape Juice macro, Ramuh still lagging behind
- Target Sniper pugil and inch forward, spamming the assault macro (L1+4 on my PS2 controller) [as you do the bcnm, you become more familiar with the exact point of aggro and assault's range]
- While Ramuh is roughly 1/3-1/2 of the way toward Sniper Pugil, hit Judgment Bolt macro; Ramuh will connect with it as he reaches the Sniper Pugil (I found that if you wait until the 2nd wave of knockback breath to use Judgment Bolt, Ramuh often gets knocked out before the fish)
- Use Hi-Ether macro
- Cast bio on Sniper Pugil, run behind it and start meleeing
- Eye Blood Pact recast time, start spamming Judgment Boly macro around 10 seconds left on timer (L1+5 on my PS2 controller)
- (in my experience, the Sniper Pugil was never dead by this point, however the 2:15 run had Ramuh perform one last melee hit roughly 1 second after 2nd Judgment Bolt)
- As Sniper Pugil dies, immediately start holding in the over key (with camera over the left shoulder of my character, I hold in right on the D-pad on PS2 controller)
- Being that there are no longer any mobs left, the selecting arrow targets the chest that just dropped, and meleeing behind the middle fish has it already in clicking range.

The timer seems to stop the moment you click the chest, and there is another small lag period similar to pre-fight, where the data is compared to the server's pre-existing data for the record.

Not only is the time of 2:15 attainable, but with better gear, pre-fight food, general luck, that time can also be shaved off by at least 2-3 seconds. I've often taken a friend with me, who entered the battle while I was already running toward the fish, and who just helped Ramuh take down the Sniper Pugil, where the 2nd Judgment Bolt finished off all 3 fish instantaneously. The 2-man record was 2:13, which was hit twice in the same week. I've also seen an extra few dozen dmg sustained by the two Archer Pugils on lightningsday, but have yet to see the Sniper Pugil succumb to it.

/End Fight Summary

Now, addressing a few other sections of your post:
1. - I've never used a Hermes Quencher for ANYTHING, bcnm or not; The only potions I used were 1 Yagudo Drink and 1 Hi-Ether, before I realized that the fight is short enough where a single Grape Juice can be used. (For those not already aware, Grape Juice is the same 2mp/tick as Yagudo drink, but is roughly only 2/3 the duration of 1 Yagudo drink. However, at roughly 1/3-1/4 the price, I wound up spending closer to 600gil per fight on the drink, as opposed to 2000)

2. - I cannot fathom how 2 summoners who are both using Astral Flow cannot break 2 minutes, if they are busting *** in time attack mode. Granted, it could be that I'm a taru with somewhat decent gear for the cap, subbing /blm, etc.. However, when 2 Judgment Bolts kill off the 2 Archer Pugils, the 2 remaining avatars hit the Sniper Pugil twice as hard as I can solo, plus both summoners can nuke as soon as their mp is back from a Hi-ether, as opposed to waiting 40 seconds for Blood Pact to be reusable.

3. - The chest spawns in the middle of the arena; once you beat it once you know where it spawns, and positioning yourself within range of clicking it is an incredibly easy task.

4. - I've never been one to assume that the average experience of other players should prevent me from trying out any schemes I've come up with. Because of this, I beat every lvl 20 avatar on the same day, a few without food pre-battle, using only 3 total potions for each fight, all of which I was told was impossible. I've also found that Eco-warrior quests, which can and do annihilate entire alliances, can be defeated with -2- people. Sure it's not the norm and many people can fail at trying it, but once you're comfortable with a job, the only person that limits your potential is yourself. If you have an idea that's outside of the norm, go for it; that's having fun with a game, and not following a cookie-cutter task assigned by other people no more qualified than yourself at telling you how to behave/play.
