Summary

Maat has issued a final challenge to test your limits. Return with the items he has requested and the trial will begin.

Walkthrough

Talk to Maat at level 66 or higher to receive this final test. He will ask you to bring him a testimony of your job. These are Rare/Ex items that are dropped by various mobs depending on job.

Prior to a March 26, 2012 software update, a job Testimony was only good for one attempt and had to be manually dropped by the player after the attempt was over. After the software update, each testimony possessed will grant players three attempts at the corresponding battlefield: Shattering Stars / The Beast Within / Breaking the Bonds of Fate / Achieving True Power / A Furious Finale / Survival of the Wisest. The item will disappear upon trading it for the third time.

After you win the fight, make sure you go back and talk to Maat one last time for a cut scene, after which your level cap will be lifted to 75.

You'll likely need a party to beat these mobs efficiently as the drop rate, as for any required quest item, leaves much to be desired. (getting flashbacks of sub job or genkai 1 yet?)

Once you bring Maat the testimony, he will challenge you to a fight to prove once and for all you have ultimate mastery over your job.

Maat assumes your job and has all the abilities of it including your 2hr. Regardless of job however, he fights with his fists and can use asuran fists which could snuff out your hopes of winning in one fell swoop if you don't play your cards right, not to mention he hits pretty hard. Oh yes, your sub job is disabled for this fight so you can expect no help from that. You have 10 minutes to beat Maat and prove yourself to him. Watch out because the old man is WAY tougher than he looks!

Some general tips

-Maat does not attack until you do. Use this to your advantage by buffing yourself and resting to full before fighting.

-melees, buy an opo-opo necklace (TP regen when sleeping) and some sleeping potions. Put yourself to sleep with the necklace on to build up TP to 100% or so.

-Maat is not to be underestimated! Make sure you have any piece of equipment you think could help, use food, carry some medicine supply and have a battle strategy planned out. Do nothing but your very best!

-I'm not 100% sure on this but I'm told that Maat has the same stats as you do when you ENTER the fight. meaning, if you strip yourself (or maybe even equip stuff that lowers your important stats) and then equip your regular gear before fight him, it will give you a statistical advantage on him. Since Maat doesn't attack until you do, there's no real harm in trying this. Can anyone confirm?

Job strategies

Warrior

You'll need the opo-opo necklace, 4 sleep potions, a meat mithkabob and an icarus wing to do this. Be a good idea to macro your warrior abilities along with using the icarus wing as you must do this very smoothly. Enter the arena, eat your food, and put yourself to sleep until you have 100% TP. Once you're all ready, head over to meet and stand right in position. Now, turn on Aggressor, Berserk, Warcry and Mighty Strikes and pull out your weapon. Hit Maat once or twice and then use Raging Rush, immediatly use your icarus wing and then another Raging Rush. If all goes well, you'll do a fragmentation SC (who says only samurai can do one man SC's?). Maat won't know what hit him! If it doesn't quite kill Maat, start praying you finish him off fast as he will whip out his big guns right away which could quickly finish you.

Monk

When you enter the arena, eat a meat mithkabob and then do the usual sleep to 100% TP trick described above. Similar to warrior, engage Maat, use your best weapon skill, icarus wing and then use it again for mega damage. This will prompt Maat to use Hundred Fists, use yours as well. Pound away at Maat until you're at 100% TP again and then quickly use another WS which should take him down.

Thief

Thieves have another option if the player has not already beaten Maat while on another job. Instead of full out assault (described below), you can win by using your Job Ability to Steal a Scroll of Instant Warp from him.

>>> Steal Strategy <<<

  • A Scroll of Instant Warp is a Rare/Ex item, which you can only have one at a time. Be sure that you do not have one anywhere in your inventory when you face Maat (including your Mog House) otherwise you will not be able to Steal the item from Maat.

  • There is a 10 minute limit to this fight, and Steal has a five minute job ability timer, so the first Steal attempt needs to occur immediately upon entering the arena if there is any hope for there to be enough time for a second chance if Steal fails (which it often will).

  • If Steal is attempted without alternate preparation for a full melee fight, this is an all-or-nothing shot and the player should not expect to survive through the job ability timer. Plan on using some form of re-raiser (Scroll, Potion, Earring, or Hairpin), rest until the job ability timer expires and reattempt immediately before the event timer expires.

  • Maximize your stealing skill (Steal+) and equip quested Artifact (AF) gear (Rogue's Armlets -- +1, Rogue's Bonnet -- +1, Rogue's Culottes -- +1, Rogue's Poulaines -- +2) along with anything else you can find that improves stealing like Thief's Kote -- +3 (replaces Rogue's Armlets), Rabbit Charm -- +1, Rogue's Ring -- +3 (effect active when HP is 75% or lower) and Key Ring Belt -- +1 (all of these items are available at 70 or lower).

  • Only items that modify Steal will influence the chance of success or failure of the Job Ability ... the results are not affected by frequency of use (cannot be "skilled up") nor by any other modifier (STR, DEX, INT, and so on). While there are items above Level 70 that modify Steal, the player cannot wear them without having previously beaten Maat and broken the level limit. (A successful Steal will not end the fight if the player has previously beaten Maat on another job).

>>> Melee Fight <<<

  • Cap your skills for your level, particularly Dagger and Evasion and consider capping Parrying and Shield.
  • Use food -- Squid Sushi (HP +20, Accuracy +15%) and Persikos Au Lait (Regen 4 hp/tick and effect lasts 10 minutes = 800 HP)
  • Use equipment -- Opo-Opo Necklace, Blink Band, Spartan Hoplon (optional - casts Phalanx), Bomb Core / Fire Bomblet / Viking Shield (Attack+)
  • Stock up on medicines - Icarus Wing and Potions -- Vile Elixir (restores 25% HP), Vile Elixir +1 (restores 55% HP), Max-Potion, X-Potion, Hi Potion, Potion (consider using the NQ, +1, +2 or +3 versions). Carry as many potions as you feel you need and macro their use.
  • Equip as much Accuracy+ and Strength+ gear you can find. Macro in any gear that will increase Sneak Attack effectiveness.

>>> Battle Plan <<<

  • Equip your weapon(s) and the Opo-Opo Necklace, Sleep Potion x 4 (or Mary's Milk x 2) for 100% TP (do not change weapons or you will lose your TP).
  • Use Reraise, Blink, Phalanx, Squid Sushi and Persikos Au Lait.
  • Approach, use Sneak Attack, and then attack Maat from behind
  • After the first hit, immediately use Dancing Edge
  • Consume Icarus Wing (to regain 100% TP). This will give a Medicated Status Effect for two hours.
  • After gaining 100% TP, immediately use Dancing Edge. If this is done rapidly enough, it will cause a self skill chain resulting in additional damage from a Detonation effect.
  • Evaluate the situation ... If the player is in the yellow for HP, attempt Steal for best effect (Rogue's Ring is active under 75% HP) and then use a HP+ Potion.
  • After the second Dancing Edge, Maat should have used either Perfect Dodge or Asuran Fists. If Asuran Fists, use Perfect Dodge and then Flee until his Perfect Dodge wears off.
  • Re-engage Maat and build TP to 100% and use the third and final Dancing Edge.
  • At this point Maat should give up if he hasn't already.

  • An alternate strategy is to skill up Marksmanship and use Ranged Attack and land Sleep Bolts, particularly while Maat is under the effect of Perfect Dodge. This will give the player the chance to execute one or more additional Sneak Attack(s) while Maat is asleep. (Note: If you equip the Bomb Core or Fire Bomblet in the ammo slot for Attack+, be sure to macro in a safety to unequip the item before executing the Ranged Attack to avoid actually throwing the hard-to-get / expensive Attack+ item at Maat and losing it permanently.)

  • Be sure not to change weapons until after the second Dancing Edge otherwise you will waste the benefits of the Opo-Opo Necklace and the Icarus Wing.

White Mage

White mage? Solo a tough guy like Maat? Well, fortunately, White Mages don't have to actually beat Maat either. You must simply take a certain amount of damage from him and survive. (how much? It appears to be random from what I've seen, best hope you get the low end of the range). Some re-equipping will be in order here. Now you must equip yourself for defense. Some items of note are phalanx rings, earth staff (Ask your paladin friend if you can borrow his. ^^), and bat earrings. Drink a blind potion to give yourself +30 evasion from the bat earrings (you won't be actually attacking so being blinded makes no difference). Bring along a couple bottles of Yagudo drink, plenty of healing potions, some echo drops and a fish chiefkabob (heh, eating tank food. Never thought you'd see the day?) Now, when you enter, cast all your buffs. Protect, Shell, Stoneskin, Aquaveil and Blink and then rest back to full. (you need all your MP for healing so don't waste it recasting these if they wear off). Eat your food and blind yourself then use Yagudo drink and Regen III on yourself. Now cast Paralyze on Maat to get his attention (if it actually sticks, great! But don't fret if it doesn't) Maat should be hitting you for two digit damage so you should have no trouble keeping your HP up. Don't actually attack him, that gives him more TP which is not good. Don't spam lower cures, wait for HP to get somewhat low and use high end cures. More HP for your MP. Basically, you're doing what a paladin would do. But if you're a taru, mind you don't use cures that heal for more HP than you have either. Don't try to enfeeble Maat and only Cure, Silence, or Paralyze if they are cast on you. If all goes smoothly, you likely won't need Benediction but it's good to keep in mind if Maat gets lucky shots in and you need healing NOW. Just keep taking hits and healing them and Maat will eventually give up.

Black Mage

Do this right, you'll win easy. For good measure, get your INT as high as possible with food and equips. Enter Area, cast your favourite ancient spell, quickly use elemental seal-sleep II on Maat before he can retaliate. Now get him with another ancient spell while he's asleep. Now, bind him so he can't smack you around for nuking him and fire off a regular elemental spell (best one you have). That should finish him off. If all goes well, Maat will never get a shot off at you. ^^

Red Mage

Very commonly considered the hardest of all the Maat fights and for good reason. Chainspell in the hands of an enemy is never a good thing and this time, you don't have the chainspell-stun solution to fall back on. I guess the best defense against a master of cheatery is another master of cheatery. ^^; What's a red mage to do? Luck plays a big role in this fight so say your prayers before doing this. First and foremost, get a wind staff. You'll need it. Get your INT as high as you possibly can, every last point counts. Enter, dash towards Maat, dispel and sleep him immediately. While he's asleep, cast your own buffs, and dispel any and all he has on himself. Nuke Maat with Aero III until you're out of MP, convert, heal youself back up with hi-potions. Now the big guns. Chainspell aero III as fast as you can, Maat will do the same. Chainspell should finish him off. If it doesn't, continue to nuke and hope it's enough. Good luck!

Paladin

Time to show Maat who's the real defender of truth and justice! Mwa ha ha!! (Yes, I'm a paladin. How'd you guess?) Like white mage, some changes in equipment is in order here. You'll want damage dealing equipment instead of tanking but keep the sword and shield, you'll need them. Bring along an Opo-opo necklace, sleep potions, hi-potions, vile elixer or two, yagudo drink and meat mithkabob. Now, when you enter the arena, do the usual routine. Sleep yourself to 100% TP, drink your drink, eat your eats, cast your buffs and move in. Use Sentinel as soon as you engage Maat and then use Rampart when that runs out. Like warrior and monk, use your best WS right off the bat, use the icarus wing and then immediatly hit Maat again with another WS to get some good early damage. But watch out! If he flashes you right away, hold off the WS until the blindness wears off. Now, duel Maat, healing yourself along the way and shield bashing him if he tries to cast Banish III. Maat will eventually use invincible, flash him and kite him when he does this. (don't disengage, that takes too long. Just push L3 to break targeting and run around the room) Just try to stall until Maat's Invincible runs out. If you get a chance to nuke him, do so but watch your MP. When his invincible runs out, now it's your turn! Activate your own invincible and fearlessly charge back in! Attack Maat mercilessly and take this chance to heal yourself up with items. (wouldn't it just rock if Maat used Asuran fists right now? Heh heh!) By the time invincible runs out, you should have another WS ready. Use it and hopefully it will finish him off. If it doesn't, hopefully you brought enough medicine to hold your ground until another WS is ready.

Dark Knight

This is a pretty straightforeward fight actually but it's very important to carry lots of hi-potions and macro them. You'll be using a lot. Like the other melees, use an Opo-opo necklace, sleep yourself to 100% TP, use ws, icarus wing, ws right away. Use def or atk food, your choice. Most of your spells won't be very effective against Maat so don't bother. Just focus on hacking Maat up good. (but always hope he wastes turns using stupid spells like Absorb-CHR) Drain might come in handy but I wouldn't bank on it. Use your hi-potions to keep up your HP as you fight and your attack up skills should be done at your own discretion. The biggest threat is Blood Weapon. When Maat activates it, push L3 to break target lock and run around the room to reduce the number of times he attacks you. You DON'T want him regaining lost HP. once his blood weapon runs out, activate your own take back some of the punishment he's dealt you. (if your HP are still in good shape, this wouldnt' be a bad time to use souleater too) Use WS when they're ready and you should be okay as long as you are ready for anything Maat throws at you. Just beware not to use Guillotine when soul eater is activated or you could very well end up digging your own grave.

Ranger

Another fairly straightforward fight. Only thing to take note of is that Maat will either use Eagle Eye Shot right away or in retaliation to a WS. Moral: if he hasn't used Eagle Eye Shot yet, be careful not to use a ws if you haven't got the HP to take it. Your best bet is to try and tempt him to use it right away while you're still at full HP. Use Shadowbind so he can't melee attack you (and thus possibly use Asuran Fists). Other than that, do the usual Opo-opo necklace sleep to 100% TP, icarus wings and stock up on hi-potions. Fill him up full of firepower and be done with it. A Tracker's Earring helps.

Beastmaster

Not too hard. Bring along a Panzer Ghalad for this fight along with the usual Opo-opo necklace, sleep potions, hi-potions and some def up food (I personally like fish chiefkabobs as a dedicated tank but it's up to you). Okay, sleep yourself to 100% TP, summon your pet and sic it on Maat while you fight Maat's pet but don't use your WS on Maat's pet, that's for Maat himself. once you kill Maat's pet, run out of range, heal yourself back up with hi-potions and let your pet fight Maat to the death. Now run in and hit Maat with rampage. That should send him packing. (as for your 2hr, I suspect using it will prompt Maat to use his as well which could give you trouble. If you don't need to use it, then don't. No need to risk it)

Bard

Max out your sword level for this as Spirits Within will be your best friend here. Bring along the usual melee stuff, Opo-necklace, sleep potions, hi potions along with def food and a stack of Selbina milk. When you enter the arena, watch Maat and see what he's buffing himself with. Eat your food, sleep yourself to 100% Tp and then use your icarus wing which should bring you up to 200% (yeah, little different set up this time). Now, drink your Selbina milk. This is your "finale blocker." If Maat finales you, it will remove the milk effect instead of your songs. Drink another milk if Maat finales you. Use soul voice along with your best songs. Now, use finale on Maat if he has any potentially threatening buffs on (that's why I said to watch what he does when you enter.) and debuff him. Now, hit him with Spirits Within for a strong early hit. Now it's just a matter of fighting him, using WS as they come up. Finale any buffs Maat puts up and drink milk if he finales you.

Samurai

Get ready to amaze even yourself with some fancy WSing. Bring along a few pear au lait, meat mithkabob and some hi-potions. Enter the burning circle and use meditate, making sure to wait for it to recharge before you enter to confront Maat. When you enter, use third eye and use your food and drink. Now, use the following skills: Tachi: Yukikaze > Meikyo Shisui > Tachi: Gekko (Fragmentation) > Meditate > Tachi: Yukikaze > Tachi: Gekko (Fragmentation) > Tachi: Gekko. After the smoke clears, simply continue to duel Maat, drinking potions to keep health up and drink another pear au lait when the first one runs out.

Ninja

Cast Utsusemi: Ni, sleep yourself to 100% and eat your food as normal. The biggest threat is Maat's 2hr for which you must keep your HP above 700 in preparation for. Enter the arena. Maat will have Utsusemi: Ni on so don't unleash your WS until you've killed his shadows. Hit Maat with Blade: Chi or ten then proceed to Paralyze, Slow and Blind Maat. At all times, keep your HP above 700 so Maat's 2hr doesn't kill you. Once that's past, it's straightforward from there on.

Dragoon

Bring along a fish chiefkabob, a stack of hi potions, sleep potions and some Selbina milk. Use the sleep potions and Opo-necklace to get your TP up like always. Summon your wyvern and use your food and drink. Now, engage Maat and hit him five times or so and he will summon his wyvern. By this time, you should have 100% TP. Penta thrust Maat's wyvern but don't change targets, this will prompt your wyvern to breath on Maat. Jump and high jump, hit Maat a few times then use super jump and then immediatly break target and turn away from Maat (so you're engaged still but not attacking Maat). Maat and your wyvern will be locked in battle and with some luck, your wyvern will finish him off for you. If it doesn't, turn around and take him out yourself. He should be near death by now.

Summoner

Short fight but it's all or nothing. When you enter, use Earthen Ward and Aerial Armor on yourself and get your MP back to full before confronting Maat and drink a Yagudo drink. Bring out whichever avatar is strongest on the current day (or Fenrir if you have him) and immediately use Astral Flow, refill your MP with ethers quickly and use Astral Flow again as soon as it's ready. That should take out Maat. If Maat uses Astral Flow himself, you will not survive. You simply have to be quicker at the draw, nothing more to it.

Red Mage fight with Maat

Posted this on another board, thought I would post it here also.

It took me three tries to beat Maat at lvl 69. I defeated him on November 23, 2004.

I should have defeated him on the first attempt, but I converted at the wrong time (I actually didn't need to) and died instantly when stoneskin failed.

The second fight, he slaughtered me. Sleep failed every time, and I had to use chainspell to be defensive...which spelled the end. It was the most costly of the fights also, since I used expensive medicines to try and get back into the fight. But Asuran fist for 687 ended that.

The third fight, I went in mad and determined to defeat him. So I rushed him, cast stoneskin and blink and refresh (forgot yagudo drink), dispel and started to chainspell/Aero3 right away. He didn't have blink or shell up either. Each one of my Aero 3's hit for 358 the entire fight. When my mp got low and he hit his chainspell, I cast stoneskin/blink, sleep 2 (it landed) convert, Cure 4 x2 and immediately started casting Aero3 again. A total of 7 Aero 3's for 358 each took him out (2506 total damage). My setup was the following:

Warlock's Chapeau
Wind Staff for Aero 3, Dark Staff for Sleep 2
elemental torque
Morion earrings x2
Zircon rings (+3int) x2 for casting
Electrum rings x2 in convert macro
Warlock Tabard
Warlock Gloves
Royal Knight's Belt
Red Cape +1
Warlock's Tights
Custom Slacks (in convert macro only)
Custom M boots

I ended the fight at 2 mintues 21 seconds with 387hp/24mp and never used the vile elixir this fight. The record on Unicorn is 1 minute 13 seconds.

I didn't feel like waiting to buy the Phantom Tathlum or the Marine gloves. I used a pumpkin pie +1, but due to my anger, I forgot to use it before entering the burning circle . I entered with 585mp without food. With food and int gear, I had +27 int going in.

I've studied up on this fight since April, as it’s been one of the main challenges that I've been looking forward to. I've seen many strategies for red mages to try and defeat Maat. And while every piece of input was helpful, it’s best to not try and focus on doing too many things in fighting Maat. The first attempt, I tried the buff to full with protect and shell 4, stoneskin blink, etc., watch his buffs and dispel, bind, sleep, etc. It worked well the first fight, but not at all the second fight. To me, there’s just too much chance for error in doing this. My two suggestions would be this:

1. Speed. If you rush toward him, cast stoneskin and blink (and use yagudo drink if you want), and he doesn't cast shell or blink, I'd suggest hitting chainspell and start using Aero 3 right away, at a distance. When in chainspell, please make sure that stoneskin and blink haven't failed on you. That's very important. If you get low on mp or he hit his chainspell, try to sleep 2 or 1 him. Hopefully it will land, and you can rebuff, convert or medicate to your liking. with a renewed mp bar, continue to blast away with Aero3 till he falls. My chainspell lasted until he fell, but it was close.

2. Macros. To me, this is the key to defeating Maat. I found it very, very important to properly set and test my macros before the fight. I normally use 2-3 sets of macros (40 plus macros total) when partying, so I had to streamline the ones that I needed for the fight. During the first fight, I made a new macro bar set just for Maat, but rearranged the locations of certain spells in the new bar (In this case Dispel). When I went to look for Dispel, it wasn’t in the normal place I have it at, and it cost me time due to panicking. If you make a new set of macros for Maat, try to make it emulate what you are used to, so that it feels comfortable to you.

If you plan to cast elemental enfeebles and have the corresponding staffs (paralyze+Ice Staff for instance) put your staff and INT rings into the paralyze macro. Same thing for Aero3, Sleep 1 and Sleep 2. Here’s what my Aero3 marco looked like:

/equip main “Wind Staff”
/equip ring1 “Zircon Ring”
/equip ring2 “Zircon Ring”
/echo Aero 3 <bt>
/ma “Aero III” <bt>

My sleep macros were very similar in setup, except I equipped the Dark Staff. This allows you to focus on fighting Maat and not worrying about your equipment during the fight. Many don’t want to chance converting during Maat fight, and I found out why first hand in the first attempt. I’d only suggest converting right after you sleep him. But if you ‘ve landed 4 to 5 good nukes on Maat and have vile elixirs or pro ether, use them! He’s very close to falling, so don’t give him a chance for a cheap win. And macro your elixirs. I tested them while in auto run. If the macro works it will start up, but it won’t activate since you are running. Here is my convert macro:

/equip ring1 “Electrum Ring”
/equip ring2 “Electrum Ring”
/equip legs “Custom Slacks”
/ja “Convert” <me> (don’t know if <me> is necessary for Convert)
/wait 1
/ma “Cure IV” <me>

Have a separate Cure IV macro that also uses <me> in it. And lastly on my talk of macros, I had the important ones lined up as so: chainspell-Aero3-stoneskin-blink-cure4. I wanted stoneskin and blink closer to Aero3 so I could find them quick. But that’s my personal preference.

That is the basically how I finally over came Maat. But in the end, try to focus on one method, and stick with it. If you prefer to sleep-Aero3-sleep method, go for it. If you plan to rush him, that’s fine too. Just make sure to stick to your gameplan and don’t abandon it if it doesn’t go right. It is easy to panic in this fight, but you've fought many battles to reach this point, so have trust in yourself that you can pull it off. I'm happy to be done with the fight, and also to be done with Beadeaux (I soloed Ruby Quav 8 times for the three testimony drops).

Before I go, I'd like to thank every single red mage that has posted their attempts against Maat. Even though it seems that he might have a bad reputation now, I'd especially like to thank Airspirit. His post was the first time I'd ever seen equip macros, and I've been using them ever since. And from ffxionline.com, I'd like to thank Grendal, Bono, and all others that I haven't mentioned by name. Every single one of you gave me hope in my quest, and now I hope to give back just as you have.

Good luck to those that will take Maat down in the future.
Samurai vs Maat

I STILL cannot believe what I did... I wore Optical Hat, Haubergeon, RSE2 boots, Phalanx rings, rest AF and basic exp gear. I ate my tonosama riceball (enhanced by AF gloves), entered the circle, used Meditate, drank a Persikos au Lait (6k drink /cry) and had about 10 hi-potions on me. I then realized my 2 hour was 1 hour from being ready as I had helped with the Black Halo WSNM prior to this. I felt SOOO stupid and was very angry. When Meditate was a minute from being ready, I used Third Eye. When Third Eye was 10 sec from being ready, I engaged Maat, hit him once, then hit Tachi: Yukikaze. Third Eye absorbed some of Combo and it only did like 140 damage to me, I was able to then use Third Eye again on his 2nd WS which it absorbed. After he was done, I healed using my Vile Elixir +1 (got from Hakutaku while getting Optical Hat... 20k from AH {No, thanks}) which gave me around 600HP back. Then I used Tachi: Gekko, used my Icarus Wing, Tachi: Gekko, Meditate, then just spammed hi-potions while he hit me, and when TP was full again, Tachi: Gekko and he was pretty low... one finaly hit and he gave up. I could NOT believe I beat Maat without using my 2 hour... my heart raced and I stared at my screen in awe. If I had my 2 hour ready, it'd prolly have gone over faster (duh).

Well... since the WHM Maat fight is won by the amount of damage you take, wouldn't it benefit you NOT to have evasion+ from bat earrings? It'd just slow down the fight... right? Get some stumbling sandles along for getting hit. :D

I beat Maat last night (yay!) wearing Medicine Earring, Medicine Ring and with an Earth Staff equipped. Yes, you do want him to hit you, but not too hard or you can lose HP very quickly if a Cure gets interrupted.

The main problem I encounterred was when he did Shoulder Tackle on me (I think he did this three times during the fight). Aside from the damage I took, it also stunned me for 2-3 seconds, thus preventing me from curing myself. Of course, all the time you are stunned he is still hitting you, or worse, casting BanishgaIII which lands for 200-250 damage (now that's a spell I would really like, but of course it is a mob only spell). I managed to cast Benediction with 67 life left O.O

Take plenty of ethers, preferably hi-ethers or pro-ethers and spam these whenever you are not curing. You should also take a Vile Elixir and/or a Vile Elixir+1. Yes, I know these are very expensive, but better to go into the fight well prepared than have to keep begging your linkshell for help farming another Testimony.

Oh, one other hint which worked for me and another WHM in my LS if you subscribe to the notion that it is the amount that you cure yourself that matters, not the amount of damage you sustain. When you are ready for the fight, go out to Battalia Downs and pull a mob back to the Upper Jeuno zone. Allow it to beat you down to 50-100 HP, then quickly zone back in, run to Maat and start the fight. After buffing and eatting your food (I ate Steamed Crab, a popular tanking food), run up to him, cast Flash and immediately cast Divine Seal + CureIV on yourself. With Stoneskin and Blink on you and him being temporarily blinded, he won't hurt you and you will have a good head start in your curing. Good luck.

If you have any other questions regarding WHM strategy, please feel free to ask me. I'll check back from time to time.

In theory, yes...the evasion bonus is to help keep your Cures from getting interrupted, as he's probably gonna hit you most of the time anyway even with the bonus.

Maat was disgustingly simple.

Tried him first time at lv 70 (as RNG)
Slept until 150% TP
Sharpshot + Barrage
Fire Barrage
Spam Shadowbind (as fast as possiable)

At this point Maat fired his EES for 125 dmg.

Maat is bound, I slug Shot.
Maat is bound, I Icarius Wing
Maat is bound, I slug shot.
Maat is done.

He hit me all of once, and it was for a pethedic 125 EES.

Monk Advice
# Nov 23 2004 at 6:29 AM Rating: Good
Hey, I just thought I'd toss my couple of cents, seeing as there's not a TON of monk info I've seen.
Really, just recapping the things I learned on my 1/3 record.

I actually found, for me, sleeping to tp, using an icarus wing, and using a Second ws, didn't help me. It caused Maat to Hundred Fists too soon, and by the time mine was activated, I was smoked. It cut out the part of the battle where he Wasn't HF'ing, rather than when he was. Leaving me to endure his full wrath.

For my third (winning) try, I disregarded the things I had read and went with pure mnk strategy.

Sleep too 100tp. Boost to full.
Engage him, don't punch yet. Focus, dodge, COUNTERSTANCE, Hundred Fist, Chi Blast.

Let the Chi Blast start your battle.
I used my ws (Raging) to End the battle, rather than open it. The sleeping just Ensures you'll have the tp ready. You still get your damage, but you cut out the time he's Hundred Fisting, rather than leading him to it.

Last key worth noting: Activate Hundred Fists BEFORE you engage him, yes. The battle will end Long before it wears out. (Our battle is SHORT.) Remember, Hundred Fists has a sort of a warm-up time, and you want that done by the time he's punching you.

(Yes, counterstance was key for me. I countered a good 60% of his shots. Hundred Fists seems to be countered FAR more than a normal punch.
Learned that one HF'ing Sabotender Bailarina ><; )

I was actually just going to add some things to the DRG vs. Maat strategy when I saw your post iviijin, you mentioned some of the things I already was going to say, but I'll go ahead and add them anyways in hopes that I'll be able to help some people out. First, bring a Vile Elixer and a Vile Elixer +1 incase things go wrong, they the Vile Elixer saved me. Also bring an incarus wing as it will be a great help. And as you said in your post, DO NOT use an item after you super jump; I found this out the hard way. Anyways, my fight went like this:
1. Buffed up and everything.
2. Attacked Maat.
3. Used Hi-potions accordingly.
4. Maat summoned his Wyvern.
5. Penta Thrusted his wyvern using the switch target command. My Wyvern breathed on Maat.
6. Jump, High Jump.
7. He used combo on me and I went below 100 health.
8. I paniced and used Super Jump and turned away.
9. Used Vile Elixer and he started attacking me again.
10. Used incarus wing and Penta Thrusted him to finish him off.
11. Finished with 48 hp...close fight.

I hope this is a help to anyone who will fight him in the future. Don't panic and you should be fine.

Alright, I tried this at 66, missed both sidewinders, and died miserably.

Did it again at 70 using the Hellfire and the better War gear. Close call, but killed him

Basic strategy was to sleeping potion up to 200 TP, barrage, sharpshot, slug shot, shoot the barrage effect, hit eagle eye shot if I was low on TP, slug shot a second time. Then if he still wasn't dead I'd pop an icarus wing and hit one more slug shot.

What actually happened was: Forgot to use sharpshot. Slug shot hit, Maat EES'ed me. Shot the barrage while Maat ran up and meleed me once then shot me once. I was down to 200 HP (one hit from death) by this point. Barrage got me enough TP, I hit slug shot. He died. Three shots. Slug. Barrage. Slug. Never had to use the icarus or EES.

I am Elvaan, so keep this in mind. It was a close call, so someone with less base STR might have more trouble killing him in three shots. Regardless, if you shadowbind him first before starting any of this, he won't get the melee attack in that he got on me. That being the case you can survive long enough to EES too, and kill him.

If two or more weaponskills miss, you lose. Simple as that.
uggg... I hate Maat
# Nov 13 2004 at 11:51 AM Rating: Decent
Maat is pure evil. I thought I hated him before, with all the other limit break quests from 50-60 (65 being delightfully easy for once, thankfully), but I've developed a newfound animosity for the final limit break. I tried him last night, using all the tactics I could find from web resources and advice from other BLMs who have beat him, and he still 1-shotted me unexpectedly. The key is, I believe, not to ever move towards him while he's casting -- I followed the standard strategy: Flare, Elemental Seal+Sleep2, Burst, Bind, then 1 more high-damage spell. My mistake, was that he resisted my Bind, then started casting another ancient spell; I moved out of range, and waited for him to move closer. HOWEVER: he moved closer and started casting another ancient, but he was too far away for me to read IN THE LOG that he was casting an ancient. Stupid me, I sat there puzzled for 8-10 seconds, then moved in and got slaughtered by him casting Burst.
The bottom line: Don't move towards Maat if he's not moving! I got antsy because I had used Manafont by that point, and didn't want it to wear off. Bring Hyper-Ethers / Yagudo Drinks / Etc to keep your MP up, just in case Manafont or Elemental Seal wear off before you can effectively use them. I'll be trying again as soon as I get another BLM Testimony, and will post my results. Good luck everyone! Give Maat a /slap for me when you see him ;

Edit: Oh, and if you can afford an Enfeebling Torque at the AH, it will help if you Macro it in for your Sleep2 and Bind spells -- my Enfeeble skill isn't capped, and I will probably try this next time. They cost around 300-400k on my server, but if you have the cash, it never hurts, as you can sell it back for the same price if you're lucky. Or keep it and add it on to the ever-growing Inventory stockpile that is your macro-swapped equipment, like me :(

PLD Maat
# Nov 06 2004 at 11:41 AM Rating: Default
ok..most important thing for PLD is Accuracy...so try to get as much as u can get.heres how i did it.
Armor:
Espadon
Generals Shield
Haubergeon+1
Peacock Charm
Life Belt ( got Speed Belt in my first try...life belt seems to be better for maat fight )
rest PLD AF
Items:
12 Hi-Potions ( used just 8 )
12 Eye Drops ( for every Flash one Drop )
Vile Elixir+1
Vile Elixir
2 Yagudo Drinks
4 Sleeping Potions ( for Opo-Opo Necklace )
Icarus Wing
and a Meat Mith/Chiefkabob ( i forgot food ^^ )
The Fight:

Ok,enter battlefield and buff up ( protectIV sheelIII )take a Yag.Drink now. then sleep till got 100TP ( 4 sleeping potions needed ) then Food ( that i didnt have -.- ) ok,so far so good.
start the fight with maat. he will flash u pretty soon...or flash u directly after u hit him once. take a eye drop, and use Swift Blade ( i tried Vorpal Blade too,but Swift Blade seems to be stronger ) now flash him,and use some Hi-Potions ( try to save ure MP ) now use Sentinel and keep on fighting him. he will make a lot of dmg to u..like 80-100 dmg per hit ^^;; but dont get paniced. when sentinel wears off,use Rampart. during that time u can use some cure3s. ok..u should have 100TP now..so give him another Swift Blade. he will use Invincible. means, its half time ^^ nice uve come that far XD ok ok. when he uses Inv run out of his hit range...he will do Banish3 ( im sure he did before and u did Shield Bash didnt u? ^^ ) when he casts the speel there enough time for u to take a Vile Elixir ( gives u 25% HP and MP back ) that should keep u alive till his Inv goes off. ok,now its ure turn. u use Invincible and fight him again. take some Hi-Potions and cure ureself while he cant interrupt u when ure Invincible. u have to hurry a bit,so use ure Icarus Wing while ure Invincible. do another Swift Blade. he shouldnt have much HP left...but u dont have too much time left till he will use Asuran Fists ^^. ok,if ure HP and MP is kinda down ( mine was at this time ) take the Vile Elixir+1. make sure he wont interrupt u ( Flash should help u by this ) the rest should be easy. fight him till u got 100TP,use another Swift Blade and he will give up.

thats how i did it. took me a bit more than 7 minutes...no new record...but i won, thats more important ^^.

and as i said..make sure u got enough Accuracy,or else u will miss a lot and will loose.

Godd Luck ^.^y

Ok, I'm 1/6 vs Maat. First fight I went in with defence enhancements. 2nd fight I used more magic enhancements. 3rd fight I lasted 15 secs. 4-5 came close but forgot to recast Blink and Stoneskin after chainspell. 6th fight I killed him easily.

Practice:
Fight Ruby Quadivs till they become easy to kill.

Days of week:
I fought him on Dark Day, with dark staff I had a greater chance sleep would stick.
If you fight him on Wind day, use your dark staff for sleep.

Items used:
Yagado Drink
Rolanberry Pie
Vile Elixer and Vile Elixer +1
Full AF
Dark Staff

My Plan:
Eat Pie before entering. Enter battle and run up to him. See what buffs he cast, you need to get rid of blink, stoneskin, and shell with dispel. Quickly Buff with Protect/shell, blink and stoneskin, No refresh, use Yagado drink and heal to full.
Keep your distance from Maat at all times. Sleep II maat, if miss, pray that Sleep I sticks. Dispel till all major buffs are gone. Aero III>sleepII>blink till low on MP. Use Vile Elixer Aero II>SleepII>blink. Should be close to half HP. SleepII blink convert Cure IV Cure III . Use Chainspell, Stoneskin then AeroIII>blink>AeroIII repeat till low MP. Maat should have used chainspell by now. Blink then use Vile Elixer +1, Aero III till you finish.

This is my plan, others used wind staff, Ice staff, used no vile elixirs and still won. Its all luck.
Ah, before I forget...

DRK Maat, at the very beginning, I'd advise standing out of his range and pulling him with Absorb-VIT, since you won't need MP during the fight most likely. After you pull with Absorb-VIT, he'll most likely cast his own Absorb, so you might have time to get off a Bio II to lower the damage you take even more...I did. Also, use Phalanx rings and Steamed crab. With all that stuff on, he oughta only average 100 a hit, so you'll be fine. Then it's just praying he doesn't use a high power Weapon Skill...

Bard Maat:

Basically follow Mysterytour's advice with the following changes:

1. Any weapon is fine - Sword dosn't have to be your main source of damage and you can do just fine w/o spending hours getting sword up to 175. Something up to 175+ is good though - Dagger is my fav (because of lvl 70 stun dagger)

2. FOE REQUIUM 6 + SOUL VOICE is your main weapon at about 50 damage/tick - by the time soul voice runs out maat will have lost around half his life to requium (and some to your weapon). Mysterytour dosn't stress the importance of landing and keeping both requium and elegy enough. landing them is easy, but don't forget to re-cast them.

3. Paeon is better than Minne. I only fought him 3 times, but Paeon worked MUCH better at keeping me alive than Minne did.

4. Opo-opo + sleep potion + icarus wing... very expensive and dosn't help much. But, any damage helps so if you have the cash go for it, if not, don't worry about it - the fight will be a whole 5-10 seconds longer, buy another Hi-potion or two to survive.

------

Oh and maat DOES NOT copy you. dosn't matter if you take your gear off or whatever he will be the same strength.

I did the gear down thing, lost then did it again w/o removing all my gear first... the fight was the same dificulty, I even got a lot closer to beating him the 2nd time than I did the first.

It's my experience tha removing all your gear before entering then putting it back on for the fight after entering *DOES NOT* help... but it dosn't hurt either if you'd rather play it safe.

The level up trick is a unique idea, but it seems to me that maat was very hard to fight at 68 but much easier at 70, making it possible in my mind that he is a set lvl (say lvl 67) no matter when you go in and fight him.

You're a person who obviously hasn't made it far enough in the game to have encountered boss Ninjas before. When a NM ninja uses its 2-hour, it doesn't die. It doesn't even lose life. It CHEATS! So...a mob using Mijin Gakure is basically using an instant attack that deals hundreds of points of damage to you, at no cost to itself. A monster Ninja's 2-hour is essentially identical in result to a Ranger's 2-hour: instant, massive damage.

This is probably a goofy question, but...

Do you have to beat Maat with each job to get that job to 75, or do you only have to beat him once and the cap is removed for all jobs?

After you clear Genkai 5, I'd advise fighting him again, even for fun. If you plan to beat him, you'd just be wasting cash on potions, if you plan to lose to him, you'll lose exp. For the SMN Genkai 5:

He will use Astral Flow no matter what, the best idea is to run up to him and see what avatar he has out, then run back and buff up, then choose the avatar strong to his, and run in, fire off astral flow and then run back. Chances are he'll resist it a bit so you wont get full damage in, which is okay. He will eventually resummon his avatar and then astral flow, just make sure you're far away when this happens or you will die.

Other than that just keep astral flowing to win. That comment about if he uses it the match is over is wrong.

Now you 2-hr and self-skillchain on him. Fight over. SAM genkai 5 is perhaps the easiest around (but you must have on all your millions of gil of +accuracy equip)

If you have money to spare, buy a stoneskin torque and a blink band. Equip them after you sleep up your TP. This gives you a HUGE advantage for any job. Blink is the cheaper one at around 60-80k, stoneskin may cost alot, maybe 300k. When I did ranger, EES did 0 dmg to me cause stoneskin ate it. You can bet I pwned maat big time.
