Summary

Maat has issued a final challenge to test your limits. Return with the items he has requested and the trial will begin.

Walkthrough

Talk to Maat at level 66 or higher to receive this final test. He will ask you to bring him a testimony of your job. These are Rare/Ex items that are dropped by various mobs depending on job.

Prior to a March 26, 2012 software update, a job Testimony was only good for one attempt and had to be manually dropped by the player after the attempt was over. After the software update, each testimony possessed will grant players three attempts at the corresponding battlefield: Shattering Stars / The Beast Within / Breaking the Bonds of Fate / Achieving True Power / A Furious Finale / Survival of the Wisest. The item will disappear upon trading it for the third time.

After you win the fight, make sure you go back and talk to Maat one last time for a cut scene, after which your level cap will be lifted to 75.

You'll likely need a party to beat these mobs efficiently as the drop rate, as for any required quest item, leaves much to be desired. (getting flashbacks of sub job or genkai 1 yet?)

Once you bring Maat the testimony, he will challenge you to a fight to prove once and for all you have ultimate mastery over your job.

Maat assumes your job and has all the abilities of it including your 2hr. Regardless of job however, he fights with his fists and can use asuran fists which could snuff out your hopes of winning in one fell swoop if you don't play your cards right, not to mention he hits pretty hard. Oh yes, your sub job is disabled for this fight so you can expect no help from that. You have 10 minutes to beat Maat and prove yourself to him. Watch out because the old man is WAY tougher than he looks!

Some general tips

-Maat does not attack until you do. Use this to your advantage by buffing yourself and resting to full before fighting.

-melees, buy an opo-opo necklace (TP regen when sleeping) and some sleeping potions. Put yourself to sleep with the necklace on to build up TP to 100% or so.

-Maat is not to be underestimated! Make sure you have any piece of equipment you think could help, use food, carry some medicine supply and have a battle strategy planned out. Do nothing but your very best!

-I'm not 100% sure on this but I'm told that Maat has the same stats as you do when you ENTER the fight. meaning, if you strip yourself (or maybe even equip stuff that lowers your important stats) and then equip your regular gear before fight him, it will give you a statistical advantage on him. Since Maat doesn't attack until you do, there's no real harm in trying this. Can anyone confirm?

Job strategies

Warrior

You'll need the opo-opo necklace, 4 sleep potions, a meat mithkabob and an icarus wing to do this. Be a good idea to macro your warrior abilities along with using the icarus wing as you must do this very smoothly. Enter the arena, eat your food, and put yourself to sleep until you have 100% TP. Once you're all ready, head over to meet and stand right in position. Now, turn on Aggressor, Berserk, Warcry and Mighty Strikes and pull out your weapon. Hit Maat once or twice and then use Raging Rush, immediatly use your icarus wing and then another Raging Rush. If all goes well, you'll do a fragmentation SC (who says only samurai can do one man SC's?). Maat won't know what hit him! If it doesn't quite kill Maat, start praying you finish him off fast as he will whip out his big guns right away which could quickly finish you.

Monk

When you enter the arena, eat a meat mithkabob and then do the usual sleep to 100% TP trick described above. Similar to warrior, engage Maat, use your best weapon skill, icarus wing and then use it again for mega damage. This will prompt Maat to use Hundred Fists, use yours as well. Pound away at Maat until you're at 100% TP again and then quickly use another WS which should take him down.

Thief

Thieves have another option if the player has not already beaten Maat while on another job. Instead of full out assault (described below), you can win by using your Job Ability to Steal a Scroll of Instant Warp from him.

>>> Steal Strategy <<<

  • A Scroll of Instant Warp is a Rare/Ex item, which you can only have one at a time. Be sure that you do not have one anywhere in your inventory when you face Maat (including your Mog House) otherwise you will not be able to Steal the item from Maat.

  • There is a 10 minute limit to this fight, and Steal has a five minute job ability timer, so the first Steal attempt needs to occur immediately upon entering the arena if there is any hope for there to be enough time for a second chance if Steal fails (which it often will).

  • If Steal is attempted without alternate preparation for a full melee fight, this is an all-or-nothing shot and the player should not expect to survive through the job ability timer. Plan on using some form of re-raiser (Scroll, Potion, Earring, or Hairpin), rest until the job ability timer expires and reattempt immediately before the event timer expires.

  • Maximize your stealing skill (Steal+) and equip quested Artifact (AF) gear (Rogue's Armlets -- +1, Rogue's Bonnet -- +1, Rogue's Culottes -- +1, Rogue's Poulaines -- +2) along with anything else you can find that improves stealing like Thief's Kote -- +3 (replaces Rogue's Armlets), Rabbit Charm -- +1, Rogue's Ring -- +3 (effect active when HP is 75% or lower) and Key Ring Belt -- +1 (all of these items are available at 70 or lower).

  • Only items that modify Steal will influence the chance of success or failure of the Job Ability ... the results are not affected by frequency of use (cannot be "skilled up") nor by any other modifier (STR, DEX, INT, and so on). While there are items above Level 70 that modify Steal, the player cannot wear them without having previously beaten Maat and broken the level limit. (A successful Steal will not end the fight if the player has previously beaten Maat on another job).

>>> Melee Fight <<<

  • Cap your skills for your level, particularly Dagger and Evasion and consider capping Parrying and Shield.
  • Use food -- Squid Sushi (HP +20, Accuracy +15%) and Persikos Au Lait (Regen 4 hp/tick and effect lasts 10 minutes = 800 HP)
  • Use equipment -- Opo-Opo Necklace, Blink Band, Spartan Hoplon (optional - casts Phalanx), Bomb Core / Fire Bomblet / Viking Shield (Attack+)
  • Stock up on medicines - Icarus Wing and Potions -- Vile Elixir (restores 25% HP), Vile Elixir +1 (restores 55% HP), Max-Potion, X-Potion, Hi Potion, Potion (consider using the NQ, +1, +2 or +3 versions). Carry as many potions as you feel you need and macro their use.
  • Equip as much Accuracy+ and Strength+ gear you can find. Macro in any gear that will increase Sneak Attack effectiveness.

>>> Battle Plan <<<

  • Equip your weapon(s) and the Opo-Opo Necklace, Sleep Potion x 4 (or Mary's Milk x 2) for 100% TP (do not change weapons or you will lose your TP).
  • Use Reraise, Blink, Phalanx, Squid Sushi and Persikos Au Lait.
  • Approach, use Sneak Attack, and then attack Maat from behind
  • After the first hit, immediately use Dancing Edge
  • Consume Icarus Wing (to regain 100% TP). This will give a Medicated Status Effect for two hours.
  • After gaining 100% TP, immediately use Dancing Edge. If this is done rapidly enough, it will cause a self skill chain resulting in additional damage from a Detonation effect.
  • Evaluate the situation ... If the player is in the yellow for HP, attempt Steal for best effect (Rogue's Ring is active under 75% HP) and then use a HP+ Potion.
  • After the second Dancing Edge, Maat should have used either Perfect Dodge or Asuran Fists. If Asuran Fists, use Perfect Dodge and then Flee until his Perfect Dodge wears off.
  • Re-engage Maat and build TP to 100% and use the third and final Dancing Edge.
  • At this point Maat should give up if he hasn't already.

  • An alternate strategy is to skill up Marksmanship and use Ranged Attack and land Sleep Bolts, particularly while Maat is under the effect of Perfect Dodge. This will give the player the chance to execute one or more additional Sneak Attack(s) while Maat is asleep. (Note: If you equip the Bomb Core or Fire Bomblet in the ammo slot for Attack+, be sure to macro in a safety to unequip the item before executing the Ranged Attack to avoid actually throwing the hard-to-get / expensive Attack+ item at Maat and losing it permanently.)

  • Be sure not to change weapons until after the second Dancing Edge otherwise you will waste the benefits of the Opo-Opo Necklace and the Icarus Wing.

White Mage

White mage? Solo a tough guy like Maat? Well, fortunately, White Mages don't have to actually beat Maat either. You must simply take a certain amount of damage from him and survive. (how much? It appears to be random from what I've seen, best hope you get the low end of the range). Some re-equipping will be in order here. Now you must equip yourself for defense. Some items of note are phalanx rings, earth staff (Ask your paladin friend if you can borrow his. ^^), and bat earrings. Drink a blind potion to give yourself +30 evasion from the bat earrings (you won't be actually attacking so being blinded makes no difference). Bring along a couple bottles of Yagudo drink, plenty of healing potions, some echo drops and a fish chiefkabob (heh, eating tank food. Never thought you'd see the day?) Now, when you enter, cast all your buffs. Protect, Shell, Stoneskin, Aquaveil and Blink and then rest back to full. (you need all your MP for healing so don't waste it recasting these if they wear off). Eat your food and blind yourself then use Yagudo drink and Regen III on yourself. Now cast Paralyze on Maat to get his attention (if it actually sticks, great! But don't fret if it doesn't) Maat should be hitting you for two digit damage so you should have no trouble keeping your HP up. Don't actually attack him, that gives him more TP which is not good. Don't spam lower cures, wait for HP to get somewhat low and use high end cures. More HP for your MP. Basically, you're doing what a paladin would do. But if you're a taru, mind you don't use cures that heal for more HP than you have either. Don't try to enfeeble Maat and only Cure, Silence, or Paralyze if they are cast on you. If all goes smoothly, you likely won't need Benediction but it's good to keep in mind if Maat gets lucky shots in and you need healing NOW. Just keep taking hits and healing them and Maat will eventually give up.

Black Mage

Do this right, you'll win easy. For good measure, get your INT as high as possible with food and equips. Enter Area, cast your favourite ancient spell, quickly use elemental seal-sleep II on Maat before he can retaliate. Now get him with another ancient spell while he's asleep. Now, bind him so he can't smack you around for nuking him and fire off a regular elemental spell (best one you have). That should finish him off. If all goes well, Maat will never get a shot off at you. ^^

Red Mage

Very commonly considered the hardest of all the Maat fights and for good reason. Chainspell in the hands of an enemy is never a good thing and this time, you don't have the chainspell-stun solution to fall back on. I guess the best defense against a master of cheatery is another master of cheatery. ^^; What's a red mage to do? Luck plays a big role in this fight so say your prayers before doing this. First and foremost, get a wind staff. You'll need it. Get your INT as high as you possibly can, every last point counts. Enter, dash towards Maat, dispel and sleep him immediately. While he's asleep, cast your own buffs, and dispel any and all he has on himself. Nuke Maat with Aero III until you're out of MP, convert, heal youself back up with hi-potions. Now the big guns. Chainspell aero III as fast as you can, Maat will do the same. Chainspell should finish him off. If it doesn't, continue to nuke and hope it's enough. Good luck!

Paladin

Time to show Maat who's the real defender of truth and justice! Mwa ha ha!! (Yes, I'm a paladin. How'd you guess?) Like white mage, some changes in equipment is in order here. You'll want damage dealing equipment instead of tanking but keep the sword and shield, you'll need them. Bring along an Opo-opo necklace, sleep potions, hi-potions, vile elixer or two, yagudo drink and meat mithkabob. Now, when you enter the arena, do the usual routine. Sleep yourself to 100% TP, drink your drink, eat your eats, cast your buffs and move in. Use Sentinel as soon as you engage Maat and then use Rampart when that runs out. Like warrior and monk, use your best WS right off the bat, use the icarus wing and then immediatly hit Maat again with another WS to get some good early damage. But watch out! If he flashes you right away, hold off the WS until the blindness wears off. Now, duel Maat, healing yourself along the way and shield bashing him if he tries to cast Banish III. Maat will eventually use invincible, flash him and kite him when he does this. (don't disengage, that takes too long. Just push L3 to break targeting and run around the room) Just try to stall until Maat's Invincible runs out. If you get a chance to nuke him, do so but watch your MP. When his invincible runs out, now it's your turn! Activate your own invincible and fearlessly charge back in! Attack Maat mercilessly and take this chance to heal yourself up with items. (wouldn't it just rock if Maat used Asuran fists right now? Heh heh!) By the time invincible runs out, you should have another WS ready. Use it and hopefully it will finish him off. If it doesn't, hopefully you brought enough medicine to hold your ground until another WS is ready.

Dark Knight

This is a pretty straightforeward fight actually but it's very important to carry lots of hi-potions and macro them. You'll be using a lot. Like the other melees, use an Opo-opo necklace, sleep yourself to 100% TP, use ws, icarus wing, ws right away. Use def or atk food, your choice. Most of your spells won't be very effective against Maat so don't bother. Just focus on hacking Maat up good. (but always hope he wastes turns using stupid spells like Absorb-CHR) Drain might come in handy but I wouldn't bank on it. Use your hi-potions to keep up your HP as you fight and your attack up skills should be done at your own discretion. The biggest threat is Blood Weapon. When Maat activates it, push L3 to break target lock and run around the room to reduce the number of times he attacks you. You DON'T want him regaining lost HP. once his blood weapon runs out, activate your own take back some of the punishment he's dealt you. (if your HP are still in good shape, this wouldnt' be a bad time to use souleater too) Use WS when they're ready and you should be okay as long as you are ready for anything Maat throws at you. Just beware not to use Guillotine when soul eater is activated or you could very well end up digging your own grave.

Ranger

Another fairly straightforward fight. Only thing to take note of is that Maat will either use Eagle Eye Shot right away or in retaliation to a WS. Moral: if he hasn't used Eagle Eye Shot yet, be careful not to use a ws if you haven't got the HP to take it. Your best bet is to try and tempt him to use it right away while you're still at full HP. Use Shadowbind so he can't melee attack you (and thus possibly use Asuran Fists). Other than that, do the usual Opo-opo necklace sleep to 100% TP, icarus wings and stock up on hi-potions. Fill him up full of firepower and be done with it. A Tracker's Earring helps.

Beastmaster

Not too hard. Bring along a Panzer Ghalad for this fight along with the usual Opo-opo necklace, sleep potions, hi-potions and some def up food (I personally like fish chiefkabobs as a dedicated tank but it's up to you). Okay, sleep yourself to 100% TP, summon your pet and sic it on Maat while you fight Maat's pet but don't use your WS on Maat's pet, that's for Maat himself. once you kill Maat's pet, run out of range, heal yourself back up with hi-potions and let your pet fight Maat to the death. Now run in and hit Maat with rampage. That should send him packing. (as for your 2hr, I suspect using it will prompt Maat to use his as well which could give you trouble. If you don't need to use it, then don't. No need to risk it)

Bard

Max out your sword level for this as Spirits Within will be your best friend here. Bring along the usual melee stuff, Opo-necklace, sleep potions, hi potions along with def food and a stack of Selbina milk. When you enter the arena, watch Maat and see what he's buffing himself with. Eat your food, sleep yourself to 100% Tp and then use your icarus wing which should bring you up to 200% (yeah, little different set up this time). Now, drink your Selbina milk. This is your "finale blocker." If Maat finales you, it will remove the milk effect instead of your songs. Drink another milk if Maat finales you. Use soul voice along with your best songs. Now, use finale on Maat if he has any potentially threatening buffs on (that's why I said to watch what he does when you enter.) and debuff him. Now, hit him with Spirits Within for a strong early hit. Now it's just a matter of fighting him, using WS as they come up. Finale any buffs Maat puts up and drink milk if he finales you.

Samurai

Get ready to amaze even yourself with some fancy WSing. Bring along a few pear au lait, meat mithkabob and some hi-potions. Enter the burning circle and use meditate, making sure to wait for it to recharge before you enter to confront Maat. When you enter, use third eye and use your food and drink. Now, use the following skills: Tachi: Yukikaze > Meikyo Shisui > Tachi: Gekko (Fragmentation) > Meditate > Tachi: Yukikaze > Tachi: Gekko (Fragmentation) > Tachi: Gekko. After the smoke clears, simply continue to duel Maat, drinking potions to keep health up and drink another pear au lait when the first one runs out.

Ninja

Cast Utsusemi: Ni, sleep yourself to 100% and eat your food as normal. The biggest threat is Maat's 2hr for which you must keep your HP above 700 in preparation for. Enter the arena. Maat will have Utsusemi: Ni on so don't unleash your WS until you've killed his shadows. Hit Maat with Blade: Chi or ten then proceed to Paralyze, Slow and Blind Maat. At all times, keep your HP above 700 so Maat's 2hr doesn't kill you. Once that's past, it's straightforward from there on.

Dragoon

Bring along a fish chiefkabob, a stack of hi potions, sleep potions and some Selbina milk. Use the sleep potions and Opo-necklace to get your TP up like always. Summon your wyvern and use your food and drink. Now, engage Maat and hit him five times or so and he will summon his wyvern. By this time, you should have 100% TP. Penta thrust Maat's wyvern but don't change targets, this will prompt your wyvern to breath on Maat. Jump and high jump, hit Maat a few times then use super jump and then immediatly break target and turn away from Maat (so you're engaged still but not attacking Maat). Maat and your wyvern will be locked in battle and with some luck, your wyvern will finish him off for you. If it doesn't, turn around and take him out yourself. He should be near death by now.

Summoner

Short fight but it's all or nothing. When you enter, use Earthen Ward and Aerial Armor on yourself and get your MP back to full before confronting Maat and drink a Yagudo drink. Bring out whichever avatar is strongest on the current day (or Fenrir if you have him) and immediately use Astral Flow, refill your MP with ethers quickly and use Astral Flow again as soon as it's ready. That should take out Maat. If Maat uses Astral Flow himself, you will not survive. You simply have to be quicker at the draw, nothing more to it.

7)party time!!cure(xpotion) gang upon maat with your pet befor emaat calls 3rd pet!
8) maat calls 3rd pet just, just when i used my icarus wing and about to do rampage maat falls down begging! so i never used icarus wing!
it didnt really matter much strategy i think! it was normal beast instinct! sic pet on maat you fight maat's pets that's all.
*note I spammed sic on maat's pet while i was fight vs maat pet! it helped alot!
* the real key to victory was having vitality +8
and high defense.maats hits were weak vs my pet and me. so my pet lasted long in fight!
my 2nd pet had 90% of life remaining when i defeated maat.
* so in conclusion, i dint need 30-40 million gear..like most in the videos i saw of beast vsmaat fight had.
* my gear is probably about 3-4 million.
* so if you are poor go with ogre
* vitality+8 makes your pet last long in fight!
*I counted every hit! lol maat has about 1550hp-1600hp!!hope this helps!my beast was more like a paladin lol in this fight. 1/8 vs maat but 1/1 vs maat using ogre gear and boosting my defense!

Just beat Maat as 67 Blm. All I did was this: Aeroga 3 - Elemental Seal Sleep 2 - Aeroga 3 - Bio 2 - Thunder 3. Got lucky on Thunder 3 as he began casting Flare and we all know how slow that spell is. Went on Darkday. Full af, hq staves, elem torque , crimson jelly, Blink Band & had Reraise Hairpin ready if needed. If you die before the thunder 3, reraise up and manafont and cast spell. Ancient magics take up too much mp and precious time. You also have no guarantee of second sleep or bind working after elemental seal. Good luck to you all.

Ok, I go in naked, get changed with all my steal gear and use instant-reraise. Get behind him and bingo steal: stole instant-warp !!!
Then I start combat and he kills me and I figure might as well get more evasion skillup from him so yes to reraise, die again after a few more pts up.
Then nothing, talk to him in jeuno, quest still active.... WTF ????
Was it because I stole before engaging in battle?
Was it the reraise? Help me out here please.

Woot, finally got this done. This time started out to melee him (with all the usual preparations). Started out SA, DE, icarus wing, DE (woot SC). From there went downhill fast, was getting my *** kicked big time so with 250hp left figured got nothing to loose and hit steal macro (equip. change: Rabbit Charm and Thief's Kote) and bingo got a scroll of Instant-Warp. Slept like a baby that nite, good luck to all.

Exactly the same thing was reported in the THF forums since the steal/despawn tweaks. This may be a byproduct of that and should be reported both to a GM and emailed as a bug report.

Hopefully this is a mistake and SE will fix it.
.... ... .. .. Hmm BSTs said that too... ><;

just beat maat as elv 70SAM. followed guide on here pretty strictly. i opened the fight with a 560 yukikaze and maat popped SAM 2hr and started weapon skilling like crazy. he pulled off a liquefaction to fusion SC which brought me down to 94/1178 HP luckily i was able to pull off a 595 yuki > 563 gekko > 334 fragmentation SC which ended the fight for him. he does hit hard and combo hit me for 400 damage. all his other WS are weak and under 150 dmg. he never used asuran fists though. my advice to any SAMs out there is to follow this guide and bring potions. u will need them and they do help. if you play right you should be able to end the fight pretty quick. intense fight all the way but relatively easy

I was thinking of all the ways people try to trick Maat into having lower stats, and it just occured to me:

What if, before the fight, you were to die, get raised, and enter the battle still weakened?
Would Maat only have, like, 250 hitpoints??

.....

Unfortunately, I'm too afraid of burning my testimony to find out.....

But I am tempted....
Story of the Super Paladin vs. Maat
# Jan 03 2006 at 9:13 PM Rating: Decent
If you read no other Maat story, read this one.

Gather closely my friends and I will tell you the tale of Maat vs. the Super Paladin (me).

So I go in, put myself to sleep for Tp with Op Necklace...

...OH WAIT, my sword in not equiped.

So I do that and put myself to sleep again...

...OH WAIT, I never cast Protect IV on myself and rested for Mp. So I do that. Takes me 8 Sleep Potions before I get myself 100 TP and am ready.

I go into fight 1/2 way through fight...

...OH WAIT, I forgot to eat +defense food. So I do that and then Maat uses invincible. And then I try to use my Invincible...

...OH WAIT, I have 45 min left on my timer before I can use my 2hr again.

This stupidity cost me 5 Hi-potions, 1 Vile-Elixer, and 2 Yag drinks.

It's a miracle I won it at 9 min 47 seconds.

My raw stupidity could not cause me to loose this fight.

You may be asking yourselves "why is this idiot known as a Super Paladin" Well my friends it is because on my worst day, reguardless of my vast stupidity, I just couldn't loose this fight.

That's nothing, I got to fight Maat today (I'm a DRK) and he owns me in 7 hits.

I sleep to 100% TP, didn't miss weapons or anything like that, I've got all my gear and macros ready and equiped. I run in, use Spinning Slash for over 500 dmg, get a normal attack for about 150, he's at 3/4 HP

then, I'm stupid enough to listen to this site and use my Icarus Wing... Spinning Slash for 770+ he's a half HP, probably not even 30 seconds into the fight.

So I'm thinking I'll be alright, he's only hitting for as much as I am, even with his Fists, it's only hitting once. But, then he uses Blood Weapon. I try to run away, but he's fast for his age...

With Blood Weapon, he starts hitting me for over 250! Three hits and I'm dead...

Now I need another G.D. DRK Testimony... damned undead...

Word from the foolish, make sure you have good equipment like Epsidon +1, Rosenbow thing, and some of the level 70 Pld armor. I had +27 Vit going into fight.

Things like using Coral Rings for -18 accuarcy, and +5 Attack -5 Evade Earrings made a huge difference.

Ok, I finally beat the old fart and all you blm's out there who keep losing to him here's some advice:
best thing to do is to of course get in there nakked lol, equip blink band and use it and then equip full AF, not your black cloak, and have macros set up.
Best combo is Burst, ES Sleep II, Freeze, stun (you may not have to use it, I didn't) and Firaga III (Freeze will lower his resistance to fire).
Don't use another AM spell as your third spell, you won't have enough time for that before he whoops your behind.
You may not beat the record like this but who cares lol
Use Manafont at first so you will not have to worry about it midfight (put it in the same macro with Burst), RIGHT after the spell hits him RUNNNN as far as the 2 torches in the back. That will force him to chase you and stop his casting. When he's within range again ES Sleep II him. Run back towards the starting point and when he's about to be out of range cast Freeze, don't stun him now, just keep running til you hit the wall and Maat will come after you again. If he stops and starts casting, stun him and cast Firaga III, if he just walks to you to hit you, no need to stun, blink should take care of him until you're done casting Firaga III.
If you do this right you should take no dmg, but if he gets a spell off on you before you sleep him have a Vile Elixir+1 macroed and use it after you sleep him before you start running again. No ethers, no potions, they take too long to use.
I'm sure that whoever beat the record did it another way, but if you don't panic this should be a guaranteed Maat mashing experience XD
All the guides I read said the same thing, spell, sleep, spell, stun, spell yadda yadda bla bla bla. If you cast and just stand there he WILL do a gaIII spell on you and kill you on the spot before you can turn around and sleep him. I lost count of the testimonies I blew up like that then I met a fellow blm in beaudeaux while trying to get my 1235867543827540985th testimony (thank you Rizzer)and not only did he show me how to solo the Sapphires, he also shared this Maat strategy with me.
Hope this is helpful to you guys and GL with Maat m(^-^)b
btw, I found out why some people get to beat him without moving. It's pure luck, if he casts a crap spell (burn, frost, choke etc) as his first spell you're good to go and you can ES sleep him np, if instead of doing that he starts off with a ga spell and you don't run after casting your first AM spell you're doomed, that's all there is to it.

Just did this fight as 66 WHM. Record time on my server (Midgardsormr) was 6min 19sec. I finished at 7min 33sec, a decent time. :) Parsing the damage I took, it totalled 5,826 not counting Dia. From what I understand this is a tad on the high end of required damage taken for WHM, and pretty scary to handle as a Taru. Last page of fight log included Dragon Kick, Holy and Banishga III. He had it out for me and I had to use my Vile Elixer that I had on standby ><. But it was money well spent, and now I have a 75 lvl cap. I used 1x Bat Earring (coudln't find the other, swapped in Dodge Earring), all Crow/Raven gear for eva, Spirit Torque, 1 Phalanx Ring and 1 Medicine Ring. Used Phalanx effect from Spartan Hoplon, ate Shallops Tropicale, drank Blinding Potion, Persikos Au Lait and Yag Drink, cast Stoneskin Prot 4 and Shell 3. Equipped my Light staff (kept it on for rest of battle, more HP restored vs minimal def boost from Earth staff) and cast Para on him (stuck). He opened w/ Banishga III :O He tried to follow it w/ Holy but Para caught it. Then I would just let him get me to 50% constantly for latent on Medicine Ring and cast Cure 3 to nearly fill HP. W/ my eva gear, he was missing a good 1/3 of the time. Kept Regen up when possible, spent a lot of time casting Paralyna on myself and using Echo Drops. After I bene'd (with literally 1 HP left), he started really going to town on me and I was forced to use my Vile Elixer, which restored 3/4 of my HP/MP. Fight won, new title and level cap, and a great weight off of my shoulder. After I hit 75 and get some merits and Hexa under my belt, I wanna go back and do WHM battle again and melee the old fart. ^^

ok, so im a lvl 70 thf on alexander, im 0/5 trying to steal from maat and its getting annoying. so on my last maat run, i stole and failed, and figured wth, i may as well actually fight back instead of letting him kill me, reraise, and try again. i got him down to 1/8 w/o any of my soloing equip, then he used asuran fists and when i used the potion i thought restored full HP, it only gave me 250 lol, so i died. but everytime i lose, i learn sumthing, i guess its the point of this? anyway, so now im pissed, i spent 4 mil on evasion equip that im just going to sell right after this including a bat cap. after i put all my previous solo equip on, i have a total evasion of 612 (228 skill + physical evasion bonus job abiliy, evasion torque, survival belt, bat cap, empy hairpin, scorp. harness, war gloves +1, battle boots, raven hose, elusive earrings and a rogues earring to toss on incase it goes bad. im just gonna go in there and kick him in the nuts as hard as i can, i just hope i can dodge asuran fists :\ ill let u guys know how it turns out. my advice, if ur a thf and u cant seem to land a steal on this guy, stop taking the easy way and try it another way! if this works, ill post a stragegy for any thfs in the same predicament as me.
RE: this guys pissed me off one too many times.
# Dec 28 2005 at 10:41 PM Rating: Decent
OK guys, i got him that time wooo hoo now heres my stragegy as promised. it worked very well for me lvl 70 mithra thf

for the fight you'll need:
1.) marksmanship capped or close to capped
2.) evasion capped or close to capped (if you dont have these, forget it, ull have to steal from him)
3.)trailers kukri
4.) Merman rings or the NQ ones
5.)3 stacks of bloody bolts, a stack of blind bolts and a stack of acid bolts
6.) Vile elixir+1, NQ vile elixir, and 2 x potions
7.) as much evasion gear as u can get, no matter what, re-sell it after fight if u have to borrow **** if ur on alexander, ill lend u sum stuff /tell me at Praetorian for a deposit unless i know u XD. i reccomend:
-evasion torque
-elusive earrings x2
-rogue's earring (this is a must)
-survial belt
-nomads mantle (i used +1, a bat cape would be better)
-scorpion harness
-Ohat (empy hairpin will do)
-battle boots +1
-raven or crow hose
-war gloves or crow gloves +1s are even better
-jack-o-lantern (food under vegetables)
8.) reraise hairpin
9.) blink band
10.) all ur steal equip
11.) spartan hoplon

okkkk now that that is out of the way, heres the stragey in list of events that i eccountered them

1.) ENTER ARENA NAKED, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!! or better yet, get stumbling boots if AH has em.

2.) once inside the ring, equip rr hairpin and all ur gear, use jack-o-lantern, and hairpin and spartan hoplon when rdy. then equip blink band, use that when rdy.

3.) be sure u replace ur blink band with evaion head piece then move forward

4.) this is very important, maat will not start fighting until u hit him, but he will start moving around shortly after u get close enough to melee. b4 u enter the circle part, use sneak attack, flee and run behind maat, engage and hit him. if timed correctly, u should get a great head start.

5.) this fight consist out almost little to no melee. keep him blinded and def. down, spam bloody bolts until ur TP is full and use dancing edge. if on the off chance u have him blinded, def down, and full HP, melee for a bit, but keep ur bloody bolts rdy.

6.) at about 50% HP maat will use perfect dodge, dont panic, u can still drain HP from him for some reason... dont use ur perfect dodge save it, u will need it.

7.) continue spamming bloody bolts, eventually maat will get u down to red HP, the first time this happens, use ur vile elixir +1, continue as normal. equip your rogue's earring.

8.)the second time ur HP gets down to red, use the NQ elixir and BOTH xpotions, keep spaming bloody bolts and using dancing edge when u get full TP.

9.) you should have wayy more HP than maat by down, unless he has used asuran fists... this is the most deadly thing he has to offer i lucked on, he only used one inch punch and dragon kick on me, if he does use asuran fists and u survive, ull be in red HP. use perfect dodge now and hope for the best, it should be close enough that ull survive and win, maat doesnt need to be KO'd for u to win, hell give up at abt 1/8 (this pisses me off cuz i HAD him at abt 1/8 b4 lol).
WARNING: the most dangerous thing this old fart is that he can score double attack WS. this has happened to me, so its true. i went to steal from maat, failed meleed him for a bit, died, reraised, and when i engaged to steal again he used asuran fists as i ran away, he got the distance error >:D; then he used it again >:(

10.)if you unfortuatley, do die then wait a few seconds for maat to turn yellow and reraise. he wont aggro you even if hes right on top of you. equip all ur steal equip and as a last resort try to steal. if it fails, then re-equip all ur evasion gear as quickly as possible, i recommend a macro example:

/equip Legs "War Gloves +1"

+1 items need a space and words have to be capitalized

11.) continue fighting as best u can, hopefully u got him close enough to win ^^ just be sure you dont wait TOO long because he recovers his HP FAST a couple 100 every couple seconds.

12.) if u do die again, then you can homepoint from inside arena w/o any EXP loss, i swear. i did it 4 or 5 times and i didnt lose a single EXP. you wont lose any EXP from reraising inside arena either.

Overall, i highly recommend this over stealing. stealing sucks b/c u have no say in the matter... after taking abt 8 stealnig attempts at him and failing and succeeding at this the first time i dont see why every thf doesnt do this. the only downside is that it took a HUGE chunk out of my wallet... over 1 mil...

GOOD luck guys and i hope u kick his old, wrinkly a$$.

if you need any extra advice, post question here, ill check it. or if ur on alexander, /tell me at Praetorian

I've heard, numerous times, that Maat's stats are based on your own when you enter the BC, so equipping stuff that lowers your stats before going in, then re-equipping your good stuff will give you an edge.

Is there ANY truth to that? 'cause I've heard both yay and ney several times, and I'd like to know.

Went in, blinkband, meat chiefkabob, 7hi-potions, icarus wing, 2 yagudo drinks, 2 pear au laits, cast protect and shell on myself, ran up and got flashed causing me to wait until it was gone before i WS (Swiftblade). It hit for 247. Then i used the icarus wing and hit WS (Vorpalblade) for 111 damage (really weak). We traded blows for 2 minutes before he invincible, i waited 4 seconds and hit my invincible. After invincible wore off we duked it out until i had 100tp and hit vorpal blade for a huge 57 damage. he then proceded to tell me to "wash my face and come back when i'm ready" before he started spamming asuran fist like it was going out of style (regardless of tp, he kept using asuran fists over and over and over and over again) luckly i cast flash before the first one and he missed most of his shots leading me to watch the insane amount of asuran fists for a few more seconds. I'm thinking i should kite him during his invincible and then wait for the 8 minute mark to hit my invincble to absorb his insane asuran fist parade (and also pray that my WS hit for 250+ every time, those last 2 WS didnt even equal my first one o.O). Don't take PLD Maat fight as lightly as everyone says, they just lucked out. I'm heading into my next fight with 9 X-potions and 2 Hi-ethers to see how much longer i can last.

Im now 0/6 on rdm maat fight ; ;

First 4 tries were between level 67 and 69...
Couldnt sleep him at all, even with all the recommended equip, including enfeebling torque and capped magic skills =(
Just had to sit back and watch myself beaten to a pulp in no time.

last 2 attempts were at level 70.
These were close fights at least, but it is really starting to suck!!!
I had him to only needing the chainspell aero3's and what happens?
He pops asuran fists 4 TIMES!!! Yes, 4 in a row, with no tp gain no nothing! (bind wore and he resisted first sleep attempt)
I managed to get off 3 aero3's in between beatings, but after the first one ripped through stoneskin and blink, it didnt take long for the other 3 (XD) to take me down.
When this is supposed to be a test of your job ability against the same skills as you should have, then how in hell can he pop a WS 4 times in a row, then hobble off in to the distance laughing at you >.<;

Nevermind strategy for this fight, 90% is luck and only 10% is skill.

EDIT: W00t^^ Sent Maat packing off to the retirement village last night =P
I'll tell you where I went wrong! I was focusinf too much on getting Maat slept, and thinking if he doesnt sleep then ~I'm screwed....
Wrong! Sleep plays a big part in getting the win, but the most important spell for red mage is BIND!
He cant get near you to Asuran Fists your ***!
Every chance you get bind Maat, and then run so you're just in casting distance, and sleep.
Follow the standard strategy for this and you should be good to go. I was always binding when I went in, if I got sleep to land, but I was forgetting to do it after that when I was getting psyched about getting him slept and everything goes well....if he gets ANYWHERE near you while hes awake you lose, its as simple as that!

"If your initial attempt fails, you have little chance of surviving until steal recharges but there is one solution. You could use a reraiser, wait 5 minutes, revive yourself"

This is total lie, tried it and got kicked out of Burning Circle after 3minutes. Do not use this bogus strategy, if steal fails on 1st attempt then fight for your life.

Or maybe you're just incapable of understanding how it works.

If Maat didn't aggro you when you first approached him, then he won't aggro when you reraise. Meaning that you reraise after just a few seconds and go find a place to wait for the timer again.

Wait...so you already beat Maat with MNK? 'cause that's the only way you could have reached 75.

RE: Repeating with another job

1) testimonies are Rare/Ex. Can't sell them
2) He beat maat with his first job; as with all genkais you only have to beat them once, your second job up does not have a level cap.
3) to OP: take him on with MNK; then every other job for your Maat's Cap. However, if you lose with MNK you WILL lose exp.

Only time you dont lose EXP with Maat is when its for your genkai, if your doing it again for fun/completion/maats cap, then you'll lose exp

I just beat Maat as Elvaan Whm 68 </cheer>

It was my first try so I pretty much followed the guide above. Went in cast Protect IV, Shell IV, Stoneskin, Blink, Aquaveil, ate a Tavnazian Taco and rested to full.... then ran over casted Regen III poped a yagudo drink and pulled Maat with Slow, which didnt stick XD
He was hitting me really fast for 70-90 Dmg, Stoneskin and Blink went down quickly, I tried over and over to get them back up, but Maat decided to cast Haste and kept interupting my casting dispite Aquaviel and Flash, so i took the hits and only bothered to cast Cure IV when my HPs went under 300... He liked to spam Holy and Banishga III which did 192 Dmg, more than his WS One-Inch Punch which only did 97 Dmg.
Half way through the fight i used a Pro Ether which gave me back 250 MP and I used another Yagudo drink. That kept me going to the end of the fight where Maat did another Banishga III smacked me one last time, then he decided to give up! I took a total of 3646 Dmg, the fight lasted 8 mins 3 secs. That old geezer hits HARD!! D:

I mostly went with Defense equipment (total of 400 Def with food) I couldnt buy Bat earings like the guide said so i got Vampire Boots instead which give Evasion +10 at night (obviously i went in at night <.<) and a Mithran Stone Evasion +3

Equipment:

Earth Staff <-- must have!
Nobles Tunic
Nobles Crown
Blue Cape
Light Gauntlets
Phalanx Ring x2 <-- must have!
Holy Phail
Enhancing Earing
Drone Earing
Phantom Tathlum
Vampire Boots
Mithran Stone

I was so nervous that i ended up going a lil crazy and buying 7 X-potions a Vile Elixir a Vile Elixir +1 a Pro Ether 3 Yagudo drinks and a Tavnazian Taco...glad i didnt use the Potions and the Elixirs XD

On the whole i'd say go for Def gear... Evasion is nice, but it will just make the fight longer for no reason... Maat has to hit you for a set amount of damage for the fight to end so its better to let him smack you around and get it over with.
Don't bother to cast spells like slow and Dia on Maat, save your MP for healing cause you'll need it!!

Hope this helps, Good luck everyone!

REDMAGE MAAT FIGHT TIps you may want to know

Most of us know that rdm's dont have an easy time with maat. My battles with him were no exception to the rule. I fought him 9 times trying different things each time and studying each fight. So I will cut the chase about my discoveries about maat and tell u what it took for me to win.

For Starters! the plan is very basic go in
Sleep bind nuke , rinse and repeat. and throwing up some buffs.

I fought Maat 9 times and won on my 9th try as redmage hume. my first 8 battles I tried it with the text book strategy, jack up INT bring food elixers and such buff up with capped magic skills at lvl 70 and go at it.

my armor
astral aspis
full af
astral ring, ether ring, 2 zircon rings
phantom tathlum, phantom earring and moldavite earring
royal knights belt and redmage cape +1
enhancing torque
windstaff,darkstaff

food: INT potion , yag drink
items vile elixer +1 and vile elixer

first 8 battles days : firesday, ice day, and windsday, and darksday.
2 times on each day

1st day firesday : sleep would stick and over all
i had a fighting chance till he resisted sleep and asuran fisted me. the other 7 I never really stood a chance and sometimes just managed to hang in there long enough for the time to expire.
that being said i had a better time with firesday then darksday . ODD?

Anyway, I studied each fight and seemingly enough the only spell that stuck with any sorta consistency was bind. my astral aspis has -5 wind. I also took a look at each fight realizing that each time i went in maat was either a bit weaker or a bit stronger then the previous fight. prolly why my first fight went better then the next 7. I also heard something about maat takin stats from your armor. Myth or not I had to take the under consideration. Then I took a look at my spell list ... I noticed sleep was an enfee spell. I forgot all about that. everyone says jack up your INT for maat but how often do you hear Jack up your enfee.

so my 9th battle I said to myself this gonna be my fight I am gonna take all this stuff into consideration.

9th battle I win

armor I used in fight

af full set
darkstaff
astral aspis
astral and ether rings
royal knights belt
redmage cape +1
phantom earring and tathlum

food : crimson jelly , yag drink

my plan
I take off my af gloves, my belt, and my cape I talk to maat. (if he does copy gear stats I was unsure when he does, like when u enter or when u trade tesimony to him, and i took off gloves cuz of the dark+10 stat which the the element behind sleep, and +13mp wasnt much to lose, and the other 2 pieces i took off cuz of the mind stat which = magic def) I wasn't about to go in naked cuz thats too much mp to replace but I wanted to take off some things just incase people were right about this.

so I talk to maat I get teleported.
I trade testimony to circle, I go in. Then I reequip and buff up( stoneskin phalanx blink), eat my jelly and yag drink.

I run to maat and shoot sleep II, he sleeps then I dispel lookin for any important buffs of his to fall. after that I hit bind and then aero III then put him back to sleep he literally stood no chance and all buffs stuck to him.

after sleepin again i dispell again droppin him to no buffs. then the next part of my plan was very important. I sleep bind nuke without using my 2hr lookin for him to use his. I stayed away from him easily cuz my spells stuck ( I am like go enfee torque) my mp is gettin a lil low. But he finally 2hrs so I sleep him with his chainspell on. THATS VERY IMPORTANT. with my blink and stoneskin on that wasnt hard to do. after that I convert cure4 myself. I wait a bit for chainspell to wear off then I bind and hit my chainspell and let em have it. I use aero III 3 times and then sleep . I then use bind aero III again and then sleep to pop my vile elixer +1. u eat it really fast thus I was able to finish maat off with aero III a few more times easily. I win down goes maat.

NOTES: I saved my vile elixer +1 for near the end of my fight cuz i didnt wanna waste it it cost me 170k. moved away from maat everytime i slept him. I didnt use my chainspell till after he used his. I didnt wanna waste my 2hr watchin him sleep waitin for his to wear off I wanted the most of my chainspell. with vile elixers in my inventory I could use convert when I needed too waiting for him to 2hr. you can carry vile elixer +1 and the normal one just one at a time. Finally, in my winning fight i never switched outta my astral and ether rings INT didnt seem to be as much of a difference as the enfee was. the only thing i switched was the shield to my darkstaff. and I didnt change outta that shield until i had entered and buffed up to prevent wasting mp. I hope this strategy works for all of u and please reply to let me know if it had worked or with any questions you might have

SMN Questions
# Nov 23 2005 at 3:01 AM Rating: Decent
Ive been having some trouble with Maat lately. Im a 70 SMN and people have been telling me its not that hard. Well some people are ignorant but thats not the point. Anyways I have some questions about SMN Maat.
1) How many times can he use astral flow?
2) Can he use fenrir as one of his elementals?
Also as a sort of unrelated question
3) How come my Light Spirit Never casts Tect or Shell IV when im in the BF or basically anywhere?
If anyone knows the answers for all these questions or just one plz answer.
Thank you
