Mission Orders

You have volunteered to journey into the Phomiuna Aqueducts to defeat the minotaur. It appears that Nag'molada has set off ahead of you.

Walkthough

Head to (J-3) on the second map. The Minotaur awaits your party there at the end of the hall. Once any member of your party or alliance aggros him he will draw in the entire party or alliance, so take extra care not to do so until everyone is ready. A common strategy is to have one member of the party who is good enough to avoid aggro on the way to travel to the Minotaur alone so everyone else will be drawn in without having to waste time fighting other mobs along the way. It is highly advisable that everyone bring plenty of holy waters, since the Minotaur will use mortal ray and often, not to mention that other Taurus mobs will also use the same move in the event that you end up fighting them. You will not receive a cut scene after defeating the Minotaur, so quickly move out of the room since he will respawn in about ten minutes.

Note: If you leave the zone at this point before completing the rest of the mission, you will have to defeat the Minotaur again in order to complete the mission.

Once you have defeated the Minotaur, head to the Iron Door at (G-8). The Iron Door can be unlocked by either a thief with thief's tools or a bronze key, which drops from the fomor mobs in the area. After passing through the Iron Door, proceed to (C-8) and check the Wooden Stairs. A cut scene with Nag'molada will occur. After the cut scene, climb the ladder and follow the hallway to reach a room with oil lamps. Along the way to the room, you will encounter two taurus mobs in the hallway. It's a good idea to fight only one at a time since they are quite formidable. On the other side of the door, you will encounter a party of fomor mobs, so have sneak up before opening the door. Once inside, go around the shelving and hit the ??? to open a hidden door. This leads you to the candle room.

The candle room puzzle is dependent on the current Vana'diel day. Two torches must be lit at the same time. The torches that must be lit depending on what day it is are:

  • On Firesday, light Fire and Ice
  • On Icesday, light Ice and Wind
  • On Windsday, light Wind and Earth
  • On Earthsday, light Earth and Thunder
  • On Lightningsday, Thunder and Water
  • On Watersday, Water and Fire
  • On Lightsday or Darksday, Dark and Light
Once the proper torches are lit, go through the hidden door at the western wall. Open the ornate gate and check the second ornate gate for a cut scene. Return to the Tavnazian Safehold and talk to Justinius to complete the mission.

tanking secret

ok we had a 2 prty set up and we has no holy waters. The way to do this I think is to make sure you have a PLD in party (I did this job)

I simpley tanked with my back to the mob. Using voke, flash and curing myself I held hate fairly decent..and he couldn't hit me with his Doom effect.

However he did some AoE that killed all the mages in one hit..I didn't happen to see what it was. I popped invincible and finished the fight with no healing.

Anyway this same tanking strat worked well with all the Taurus mobs in the area, the minotaur AoE was the only problem we had.

For the exact position, go UP the ramp from the midsection of the city (the ramp that leads up from the floor with the rope bridge and the altar).

Now head east and take the first hallway on your left, going northeast. He will then be on your left after you exit this hallway, standing near a wooden table at the 'bend' of the open area.

His position on this map is J-6.

ok, the first time i was in, i killed the minotaur and proceeded to the first cutscene with Naga-whatever. I never make it to the next one. So a few weeks later i comeback in with a thf friend who opens the doors, we avoid stego agro, and make it to the candle-room. problem is, the secret door is permeantly open, the candles do nothing, and the ornate door thats supposed to give cs is "sealed tightly shut" ive killed the minotaur and gotten the cs at the latter, so does anyone know why i cant get the final cs?

Which of the two room did you go to in the Library/Store Room? There are 2 to the West (F7 & F9) and 2 to the East (J7 & J9).

I was in a subligar farming party, we ended up on the Eastern 2 rooms. The torches are there, but they don't depress; the secret door was open; and the Ornate Door was "sealed tight".

I believe that you HAVE to go to the Western 2 room in order for you to finish the mission. So far, all the walk throughs I've read takes you to the Western rooms.

I don't believe you can easily make it solo to the candle room. The reason why is that you need to run past several Stegotaurs (which have true sight). Even if you do get really lucky and are able to make it past the one in the open rooms. There are 2 of them in the corridor that leads to the Store Room/Library. The hallway there is too narrow to make it past them both without them noticing you (and killing you).

The other difficulty is getting past the locked gate. Unless you have a key or are a Thf, you will be stopped there.

But if you have a Thf that you don't care to loose a bunch of xp on, you can try this:

0. Get a Instant Reraise scroll, buy/make a Reraise Potion, buy/make a Hi-Reraise Potion.

1. Read Instant Reraise scroll

2. Run past any Stegotaurs you can without getting aggro

3. Pick the lock on the gate

4. When you get to the 2 Stegotaurs, just run as fast and as far s you can before it kills you

5. Wait for the Stegotaur to move far enough away

6. Accept the Reraise and move on. If you are not near the Store Room/Libarary, drink the Reraise Potion.

7. Repeat steps 4 to 6 as needed

If you are lucky you can get by with may just the Scroll and you don't have to use the potions.

Oh, and bring an Instant Warp scroll, so you can get out quick.

Good luck^^

I guess the other thing to do is to "coat tail" another group that is doing the mission... or join a JSE farming party

Important Note: If you plan on having a Thief pick open the Iron Door, they MUST have Thief's Tools! Living Keys and Skeleton Keys WILL NOT WORK.

I did not know this, and when I went to do this with my LS I only brought Living Keys since that's the only thing I use. If you click on the Iron Door, it specifically says you must have either a Bronze Key or a Set of Thief's Tools to open it. Don't make the same mistake I did! We actually had to have someone warp out back to the safehold, buy a set of keys on one of his mules, send them to himself and then come all the way back.

This guide should be updated to reflect this.

How to sneak past stegosaurus!

Lakshmi server LS EternalSlumber got to this mission last night. Barely prepared. Only 2 others and me had read up on it.

Went as Thf/nin.

Follow directions in posted map.

Alot of enemies(Fomor and maybe stegosaurs) do Drown magic. Please bring someone with erase.

Minotaur.
Messy fight. 12 people and ~5 got killed. U must prepare prepare prepare. If u see the minotaur! u r too close and it will aggro and pull entire alliance. If 1 person cant keep hate then many will get Doom and die. We won by sheer luck.

I cant stress enough the importance of reraise in whm. U can get killed on a whim. Reraise saved us from disaster many times.

Near the end of journey after u get near storage room there is a L shaped hallway and 2 stegosaurus are patrolling them. 12 people can take them 1 at a time easy. 6 people can take them 1 at a time OK.

At the end of hallway(in storage room)are 6 fomor mobs that work in teams of 2(to my experience). We were also looking for subligars so we fought them. We won but 8 members died cause all 6 enemies aggroed. Please note that is possible to engage them 2 at a time and its not a bad fight w 12 people. Easy to note that with so many dead people around(in a narrow hallway) the stegos had a field day w us!

Everyone warped or deathwarped except me.

So i found out how to get past the stegos. They are trusight but sight nonetheless. And a very narrow field of view. So i stood in the inner corner of L shaped hallway right behind a column(there are multiple columns at the walls of hallway). The passed me by and i even walked right by the side of one of them. U can get very close from behind and they wont aggro(Close enough for sata). Beware they like to patrol and turn around quickly. They also tend to move rather predictably. U have like ~ 10 second window between their movements. And this works if both stegos are moving close to each other.

I passed the fomors w sneak. However i found that the "candle" room needs at least 2 people to open the door. Simultaneous pullin for oil lamps. ORZ!

Have to return w a buddy!

Heya Ulrath!

Great job finding out about the Stegos.

Also want to add that Fomors do aggro to sound, at least out in the meadows. It is entirely possible that they also aggro to low HP (being undead). The additional 2 (BRD.THF, not 4) did not link I believe until someone into red from the first pair (SAM.WAR). Also when Elea (reraised WHM) was resting they did not aggro immediately (out of range) and she was not moving (no sound). They do move and aggro in pairs, but they're pretty easy to sleep (WHM elemental seal would do).

To tell the truth though, everyone in Guardians was told that it was to be a subligar farming trip only, hence no one was really that prepared to fight the Minos or go in that deep.

Anyway, good lesson learned, better luck next time!

Ok i did this mission this morning with a walkthru i found on the net the walkthru was not complete so i have created 1 that is complete.

Walkthru
Level cap of 40
In the Aqueducts, Stegosaurs have true sight which sees through Sneak/Invis so be sure to stay clear of them as much as you can. Otherwise, cast Sneak or Silent Oil is sufficient in the aqueducts. The boss, Minotaur, is located at (J-2) of the 2nd map (refer to Lonely VanaDiel). Beware that if anyone approaches near J-2, the whole alliance MAY be suddenly teleported to the Minotaur without warning. Useful medicines to bring along: Echo Drops, Holy Water. Alliance fight possible. After the fight, backtrack towards (G-8) where you will be blocked by an Iron Gate. This gate can be opened either with a EX/RARE Bronze Key or with Thief's picking tools. Bronze Key are rare drops from the Dark Stalker types mobs. Check the Wooden Ladder at (C-8) for a cutscene. After the Cutscene climb the ladder it will lead to area B on the map. Follow the path to the left and down the hall beware there are 2 Tarus type monsters here with true sight kill them both then sneak party. After party is rested enter the next room make sure all in party have sneak there are 9 Formor type mobs in the next room. Once inside next room head to the bookcase on right side and there is a ??? examine it to open secret path in the wall there. (DO NOT EXAMINE THE ??? STRAIGHT AHEAD IT WILL OPEN A WRONG WAY WHICH IS A 1 WAY EXIT THAT YOU CAN NOT RETURN FROM). Once in the right room you will find an area with targetable Oil Lamps. Check what elemental day it is currently and then get to the lamps of that element and its opposing element. Pull them both simultaneously to reveal a hidden door and enter. Check the 2nd Ornate Gate for event. After the event, head back to Tavnazian Safehold and talk to Justinus to end the mission.

Fomor Mobs and "Posession" levels.
# Dec 21 2004 at 2:14 PM Rating: Decent

1,189 posts
If your going to camp Fomor mobs for the JSE Subligars, you should be aware that Fomor mobs are like Tonberries in that they are "group-hating creatures". The more Fomor mobs you kill, the more the Fomor will hate you. As you continue to kill them off, their spirits will "possess" you (for lack of a better term). The higher your "possession" level is, the more aware the Fomor mobs will be of your presense. Eventually, with a high enough "posession" level, the Fomor mobs will see/hear you even if you have Sneak/Invis on.

The only way to lower your "posession" level is to kill Orcs and Giants in either Lufaise Meadows or Misareaux Coast. I don't know the exact formula, but I think it would be safe to say 2 orcs/giants for every 1 Fomor mob killed.

If you talk to Desparache (the old man you spoke with before), he'll tell you what your "posession" level is at.

Easy to read, easy to understand, full directions to the Minotaur and to the Gates. Some additional tips -

* Your alliance doesn't have to reach the Minotaur. One member can sneak up, walk to him, and make him use the Draw In attack. The entire alliance will be teleported to the Minotaur's location.

* You don't have to leave and talk to anyone before going after the gate at G-8. Thieves can pick the lock on the gates. If you don't have a thief ...

* Fomor drop the Bronze Key. They're worth fighting anyway because of the job-specific subligars they drop. The NIN type also gave an item for Gobbiebag 6.

I'm the first to admit it seems silly going back to Justinius right after killing the Minotaur. At least... in hind sight it seems silly. The reason my group went back to Justinius right after killing the Minotaur is because the mission is to kill the Minotaur. There is no mention of finding Nag'molada or examining strange doors in the Aqueduct. No cookie to SE... as there is more to the mission than just killing a Minotaur. **lol**

Sorry, oberonqa the Malevolent, I mis-understood what you were trying to get at when you stated that part. It would have been clearer to me if you had just stated to go kill the Minotaur and go to tbe Iron Door. Since you were writing the guide, I wouldn't have expected people to go back to the NPC after killing the Minotaur.

Thats what I was trying to get at when I wrote this paticular guide. When my group did it, we went back to Justinius after killing the Minotaur. Obviously we were wrong and had to go back through to the Iron Door. Thats why when I wrote this guide, I specifically mention what happens if you should go back to Justinius without first meeting up with Nag'molada.

Quote:

You will not get a cutscene once the Minotaur is dead. Additionally, your mission log will not update. If you return to Tavnazian Stronghold and speak to Justinius, he will not believe you killed the Minotaur unless he hears from Nag'molada as well.

You do not need to talk to Justinius after you kill the Minotaur. You can go straight to the Iron Door. This will save you a 2nd trip through the Aquaducts.

You time spent in the Aquaducts can be reduced significantly if everyon brings an Instant Warp Scroll or have a Blm40 in your party (with Warp II, of course).

The pugils and Diremites don't aggro. I have heard that the Fomor don't aggro unless you've killed them before (kind of like Tonberry hate); so, it probably best to have Sneak up for them just in case.

When I did this mission, the person who had finished it previously told us that we didn't need Sneak in the Store Room, but as we got in there, the Fomor's aggro'ed. The person who they aggro'ed admitted that she had killed Fomor before (in Lufaise Meadows and Misareaux Coast).

I have also read that there is a ??? in the Store Room; and if you click on it, you will get a map of the Aquaducts.

And speaking of the map, as of this writing (23-Nov-04), the map of this area shown on this site is incomplete. There is a 3rd map which is not shown. Also, there are non-mapped areas in the maps that are shown. Example: the Minotaur is at J3 (or J2) which is not shown.

Here is the path that we took:

1. When you enter, you are at J11 (by Tavnazian Safehold label)
2. Make your way to the octagon room at G7
3. You want to go F6 in this room; to the tunnel not shown on the map
4. Head north, the tunnel will turn left (east), then right (north again)
5. Head north until you reach the T intersection at E4(also not shown)
6. Turn right (east) until you enter the octagon room at K10 (shown on map)
7. Drop down into the octagon room when the path is clear
8. Head to the large room at J8
9. Head to the North West corner and out the (not shown) tunnel
10. Follow the westward tunnel until it turns north and ends up at a T intersection at H5
11. Turn right (east) until you run into another octagonal room (also not shown) at K5
12. Head north K4 until the T intersection at K3
13. Turn left (west) and head partly down the hall
14. Around the next right is the Minotaur
15. The party should rest until full for the fight
16. Head towards the Minotar; your party/alliance will get "Drawn in".. a bit disorientating
17. If you manage to kill the Minotar, head back the way you came
18. That's East on the hall to K3
19. South to octagonal room at K4
20. South to the hall at K5
21. West all the way to G5
22. South to large room at G6
(if you don't have a thf with you, you will need to kill Fomor is the room E5 until you get key)
23. Open Iron Gate at G8
24. Head off to D8
25. Once you climb the sairs, head north
26. The hall turns eastward to the Store Room
27. Once in the Store Room, find the ??? and go to the torches
28. After the correct torches are clicked enter the hidden door
29. Click on Ornate Gate for Cutscene
30. Warp out

I did not include all the traveling up and down ladders since I didn't remember them all. The graphics for climbing the ladders are poor at best..
