Requirements: 230+ staff skill to start quest, Lv.71 to wield Trial weapon.
Once you meet the requirements, go talk to Shantotto in Windurst Walls. She will give you the Pole of Trials which you must use until the latent effect disappears. *NOTE: The actual text will not disappear, simply the effects* If you unequip and re-equip the Pole, and you do not get the bonus stats, you are done.
How to remove the latent effect: -You must perform Weapon Skills and Skillchains on monsters that con Easy Prey or higher. -You must accumulate 300 total points. (1 point for a solo weaponskill, 2 points for creating a Lv.1 Skillchain, 3 points for creating a Lv.2 Skillchain)
You cannot create any Lv.3 chains at this point using a staff, so those are the only options you will have. So at the absolute minimum, you will need to do 100 Lv.2 Skillchains on Easy Prey+ monsters to remove the latent effect.
Once you no longer receive the latent effect bonus, head back to Windurst Walls and trade the Pole of Trials back to Shantotto. She will take the weapon from you and give you a Map to the Annals of Truth Item and tell you to head to Ifrit's Cauldron.
Take the East entrance of Ifrit's Cauldron. If you are familiar with the shortcut to the Cloister of Flames, it will help here. Make a right at the first junction, head past the first Flame Spout, straight through the cave and follow the path around the crater to the drop point at I-7/8. Enter the cave immediately to your left. Sneak and Invis will be needed the entire time. Follow the path until you reach a large room with Bombs, Bats, and Ash Lizards (H-7). 2 ???s will be in this room. The ??? in the middle of the lava bridge will be the one that triggers the NM Skeleton Cailleach Bheur.
The best place to camp is at the far tunnel, past the 2 ???s. Clear the 2 bats and the bomb if necessary, then pull to the tunnel. You have 16 minutes before enemies start respawning.
Once the NM is dead, re-examine the ??? to obtain the Annals of Truth Item. Bring this back to Shantotto and you have yourself a shiny new Weaponskill!

you get 3 points per sc with this one instead of the 2 points for the reverberation sc with carby and poison nails to sunburst. I'd rather only do 100 of these instead of 150 of the other. Either way it works fine...
/pet "punch" <bt>
/ws "fullswing" <bt>
this worked great on the collibri in thre first areas from Al Zibi
just thought id let you know, i went back and got my staff to 230 with no merits and i have the quest, so it seems merits do not work at all.

Just completed the WSNM fight with 3 summoners (75, 75, and 70). We used Titan. Be sure to use Barlightning before the fight and have Stoneskin on.
/pet "Poison Nails" <t>
/ws "Sunburst" <t>
works rather fast and is really easy
duoed decent challenges, even matches and toughs.
we did gravitation for a lvl 2 sc on everything, which i closed with sunburst.
one should think after 5 hrs the effect would have disappeared, which did not happen.
so i asked around various ppl who have the ws already:
"what about switching weapons to rest etc etc?"
noone could tell me whether i am allowed to equip another staff for resting for mp for example or not between the fights.
and if that is the mistake i made: YAY GO ME for wasting five hrs. <.<""
edit: after sleeping a bit, and 4 more mobs it went off :D

And for those that havent seen it, Retribution is the coolest looking WS I have yet to see in this game, beating even Knights of the Round which I have seen in person and isnt all that great imo.
EDIT: It can easily be silenced

We owened this NM in about 2 1/2 minutes was fairley easy
Had the latents broke for 4 months now. what the hell you gotta do to get help sheesh. lol
My BST friend and I helped people kill this twice after they wiped. He's pretty tough. Seems like a lot of people underestimate him. Could probably kill him with 3 BSTs like the Scythe, Dagger and Gun WSNMs though. right? hmm.
I don't know . . . but I may be finding out.
I'm on the quest as a 73SMN/WHM and have been doing "Spirit Taker." Last count I have about 180 of them to my credit.
A friend just sent me a tell saying the "Magical Weapon Skills" don't count.
I'm looking for the answer/truth. Anyone know?
I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt Spirit Taker is valid.
Not sure with you didnt get! Are you killing mobs with Magic? Shouldnt matter anyway just as long as you count the WS as 1 solo :(
PLD75/WAR37 Hibuki LS
BRD 75. Unfortunately, you have to cap Staff on bard before you can open the quest for this WS.
For caps for this, or other jobs, the following link provides these caps (as of 09/29/05):
but very doable! RDM or Bard is a must to dispel it's icespikes!
Getting the points on the staff was a pain in the ***.
I ended up gathering 9 people. Ranging from 70-75. Getting to the ??? is no problem at all. Just remember to bring Silent Oils, and Prism Powders and an Ice Cluster to get past the Flame Spout.
The actual NM fight was cake with 9 people. We dropped him like a sack of ****.
party setup was
pld, pld, blm, whm, rdm, rdm, brd, mnk, sam.

I have ifrit doing punch and I do Full Swing = fusion.
I'd try it out, but I don't wanna go use Spirit Taker 300 times, just to find out since it doesn't chain, it doesn't count towards points.
