Summary

Curilla has agreed to help you polish your single-handed sword skills for the upcoming tourneys.

Walkthrough

Min. Job Lvl: 71+ Min. Sword Skill: 240+

If you're ready to accept the mission, head to Chateau d'Oraguille in San d'Oria and speak with the leader of the Temple Knights, Curilla (Elvaan female in I.M. armor). If you meet the requirements, she will tell you that you have progressed sufficiently in skill level to compete in the San d'Oria tournaments, but that you need to perform one last feat of sword mastery before you may challenge San d'Oria's best.

She proceeds to hand you a key item as well as a sword, the Sapara of Trials. She instructs you to master the sword by weakening it's powers, which roughly means you need to remove the latent effect off of it by participating in skillchains and performing weapon skills. The number of SCs and WSs you need to do before the sword is sufficiently weakened goes by a strict point-based system, also please keep in mind that the monster you fight must also be EP or above:

Solo-WS or opening any level SC: 1 pt.

Close LVL1 SC: 2 pts.

Close LVL2 SC: 3 pts.

Close LVL3 SC: 5 pts.

Total Needed: 300 pt.

Participate in SCs until you've accumulated enough points for the latent effects on the Sapara of Trials to dissappear. Note: the text on the item description will remain, but the effects will expire. The best way to do this is find a SAM buddy and and do Swift Blade > Tachi: Gekko and then switch the order around on the next and so on. Chaining with a DRK and Cross Reaper would work too, but DRKs don't get TP as quickly.

After the latent effects are off of the Sapara of Trials, return to Curilla and trade her the sword. She will hand you yet another key item and tell you to proceed to Quicksand Caves.

PLD Weapon Skill NM: Girtablulu

You will Need: - Balanced alliance of 12+ Lvl70+ people, - Map of Quicksand Caves:(from Treasure Coffer), - Silent Oils, - Lots of patience.

After turning in the sword, Curilla asks you to go to Quicksand Caves, find a ??? inside and kill Girtablulu, a difficult NM scorpion. Of course, like most everything for us PLDs, it's not as easy as it sounds. If just killing the scorpion NM wasn't hard enough, getting to the ??? is an even harder task.

The Altepa Gate

You need to get this gate open before you can reach the NM. The gate is located at (I-6) of Western Altepa but is only accessible through Quicksand Caves and can only be opened when 4 columns/switches are activated. At this point, you're going to have to split up the alliance into 4 seperate groups to go after each column/switch to open the gate. Remember, mobs in Quicksand Caves will still aggro at 70+ so it's a good idea if everybody can Sneak themselves.

1) Emerald Column Send 2 party members to (D-12) of Western Altepa Desert. From there, have them zone into Quicksand Caves and head for (F-7) on the map. On the way, they may encounted a door that can only be opened by having 2 people stand on a weight-switch. Once at (F-7) they will find a sand whirlpool where they can drop through to a lower level. Once they've dropped, have them head to the zone at (H-4) on the map. Once they are back in Western Altepa Desert, they should see the Emerald Column. Have them click on the column and head back to join the rest of the alliance.

2) Sapphire Column Send another 2 party members to (G-5) of Western Altepa Desert. Have them zone into Quicksand Caves and pass through another weight-switch doorway and head for the zone at (D-8) on their map. Once there, have them look for the Sapphire Column and examine it to activate it. After they are done, have them catch up with the rest of the alliance.

3) Topaz Column Send the rest of the alliance to (J-9) of Western Altepa Desert and have them wait at this spot until the gate is opened. Send 1 party member into Quicksand Caves and have them head for (D-11). Then have them head to the farthest room on their right-hand side and fall through a whirlpool to a lower level. From there, have them zone to (C-6) to Western Altepa Desert where they can reach and examine the Topaz Column. When they are done, have them re-join the alliance at (J-9).

4) Ruby Column Once the other 3 switches/columns have been activated, gather the entire alliance at (J-9) of Western Altepa Desert and enter Quicksand Caves. Head north to (K-6) and drop through yet another whirlpool. From there, have the entire alliance zone to (N-4) on the map to Western Altepa Desert.

From here, send 1 person to activate the Ruby Column while the rest of the alliance heads north through the interconnected tunnels to the Altepa Gate at (I-6). The Altepa Gate looks like a tall set of double doors. Once all 4 columns have been activated, the Altepa Gate will open and stay open for about 15-30 mins. Make sure everybody hurries through the gate and once the alliance is gathered behind it, proceed into Quicksand Caves.

The ??? to spawn Girtablulu is at (I-6) on your map once you've entered Quicksand Caves. Be careful, the mobs in this area should check Decent or Even to 70+ and there is an NM that lurks around the center area and it detects through Sneak. Clear the room at (I-6) of all mobs and prepare for a fun fight.

Girtablulu

Girtablulu can be fought like any mid-level NM. The scorpion has rotten accuracy but hits hard when it connects. There's not much AoE to speak of but keep your mages well away for safety. The only thing to really worry about is to watch the tank's hp when Girtablulu performs it's special attack, which can cause significant damage. Make sure to bring adequate healing power and this fight should go by without a hitch. Once Girtablulu is dead, check the ??? again to receive yet another key item.

Now head back to San d'Oria and speak w/ Curilla again. After a short cutscene where you learn a bit more about Curilla and her eye, you will receive your long-awaited prize: Savage Blade!

What level do the mobs have to be? Someone in my LS just told me they have to be EP or higher and if that's the case...
1. It should be added in the guide ASAP.
2. I just wasted a lot of time.

Just to add my info. I broke latent on my Trials weapon on all EP+. When I broke the latent on my +6% Crit weapon, I tried doing it on TW mobs, and it did not in fact work.

I'll have to disagree. My latent effect finally wore off in upper delkfuts tower. I was skill chaining with my npc fellow on <too weak> gigas.

allright... my party attempted to get to Girtablulu last night, but we got stuck.
After you hit the sapphire and emerald switches, what the hell do you do? the guide says wait at j-9 for a gate to open and send someone inside, but at j-9 theres a normal entrance to quicksand caves, and theres an iron door type of thing. is the iron door the gate the guides talking about?
if so, how does the damn thing open? i hit sapphire column, then someone else hit emerald column, but nothing happened. my party just could NOT figure out what to do.
i asked my linkshell, but they didn't help, killvoid didnt help, somepage didnt help, mysterytour didnt help.
i just want to know exactly what you're supposed to do after you hit sapphire and emerald columns.
is there a certain order you have to do it in, like emerald then sapphire to get the gate to open? any input is... much needed

There is some shortcomings in the guide, obviously. I think its best to turn on the 4 columns simultaneously, the A gate will be opened for some time after that obviously.

Since you have located the Sapphire and Emerald columns, try to find the Topaz column using the link I post below. I believe there are 2 ways to gain access there:

(a) 2 ppls enter quicksand via West A desert D-12 and go to K-8 to proceed to next map (go thru 2 weight machines), drop at I-8 and exit to West A desert at L-5;

(b) Enter Quicksand Cave via East A Desert H-10, drop at E-11, exit to West A Desert at C-13 (can likely access column via a tunnel), this route can be soloed.

Route (b) confirmed, it can be soloed ^^)b

You can access the Ruby column via J-9 and can be soloed.

The following route maps are relevant:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v237/dragon_rdm/SavageBlade-TopazColumn_1.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v237/dragon_rdm/SavageBlade-SapphireColumn.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v237/dragon_rdm/SavageBlade-EmeraldColumn.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v237/dragon_rdm/SavageBlade-RubyColumn.jpg

So likely 6-7 ppls are required to position at all columns at the same time. Engage them all simultaneously.

The person at Ruby column can then put sneak on and run for the A gate. The gate can be opened inside as was told below. So the rest of the alliance will gather at j-9 and make the run to A gate themselves with one player inside to open the door for them if they cannot arrive on time.

Is the suggested routing leading to the Topaz Column in the guide wrong? The columns locations are as indicated in the following map:

Finally got Savage Blade today.
The fight was very very easy.
We went as: 75RDM/BLM (me), 75PLD, 75NIN, 75WHM, 73WAR and 71MNK
None of us used 2hr and the fight ended in less than 10min.!
Obviously the long part would be getting there but luckily we had a mule waiting inside to open the door for us!! ^^ - nice trick! (Thanks Yoshidrgn! and Monkeylord O.o!)

Avoid frustration
# Jul 25 2005 at 8:22 AM Rating: Decent
yes, it is 73 for rdm. As for what to do about the gate, a PLD on my server had probably the smartest idea I've seen. He actually had a level 1 mule (the guy has skills, what can I say) hiding behind the door ready to open whenever. He's already used it to help 2 other rdm from my LS. So my suggestion is, if you want to avoid getting annoyed at an alliance or pt, or just want to save some time once you actually start, find a way to get an extra character there days/hours/weeks/wheatever in advance

I have a question...

...How do you get a level 1 mule or level 1 anything to Altepa? Can't access Korroloka Tunnel (level too low...) Can't teleport there without first having the crystal key item... So how do you get a lv. 1 mule there?

If you can, hit these before your alliance is even built. I hit them about 3 hours before I even knew I was going to be doing this and they were still hit when I came back.

Trying to get to the Green Pillar, and read that 2 hume/elvaan/mithra can stand on the switch to open the door. Well I am down here with a PLD Elvaan friend just trying to scout out the area, and when we both stand on the switch, nothing happens. Maybe its because we are different race? I am a small hume... I wonder if that is a factor... Can anyone enlighten me on it?

You dont really need 12+ people lvl 70+ just did this with a party and it was no problem the fight was easy.

PT set up was 75 pld, 75 rng, 75 drk, 74 rdm (me), 69 whm, 70 mnk. The fight went smooth, we waited till pld gets enough hate then boom rng 2hrs, drk 2hrs, mnk 2 hrs, and I 2hred and spam Blizz 3, fight was easy and all went well now off to a mob to try my new ws ^^

{Hmmm...}
If you were to get this WS with another 71+ job(71 is only necessary to equip the sword), then I believe PLD hits 240 sword skill ~level 68 or 69.

I'd like to add something about the doors.

The guide up top says that you need two people to open these doors. This varies.

They are weighted doors. You dealt with these on ZM6, remember? Fun^^

Three Tarutaru, Two Mithra/Elvaan/Hume, One Galka.

Two Tarutaru will not open the door. They aren't heavy enough. And in response to a post made a long time ago: Yes, the doors can be opened from the inside.

Yes, this may not be the most powerful sword skill. However, it is extremely useful for its ability to open & close a light skill chain.

The faster u can do to get the 300 points, is bring a sam and close darkness sc all time...

You will know when u have the 300 points when the lattent effect disapiar, but it dont disapear in the sword, u have to look at ur hp, the sword give u +20hp +10 fire and +10 wind resist, when u have the 300 points it dont give u nothing.

Hope it helps ^^

The hardest part...
# Feb 26 2005 at 3:24 PM Rating: Decent
Looking at all the other WSNM quests, I'm a bit disappointed that of course the sword WSNM is the -hardest- to get near. I pity the poor soul that had to figure out the Altepa Gate in the first place.
At any rate, we got this done last night. Frustrated many a person, and for that, I'm sorry. Some tips you may want to consider:
--Have 4 people in your alliance (at least) who know exactly where they are going (one for each pillar, though the last pillar is on the way to the gate. Have that group stand *in front of the gate* while someone else activates the pillar. The gate can be reopened from the inside, but first someone has to be in there). Much of the frustration was borne of the fact that we had one "leader" and people just had a hard time listening to her (for whatever reason; they were fighting, they weren't paying attention, whatever).
--Make sure everyone is committed to the task at hand, i.e. don't have people that will just not sneak themselves and insist on fighting their ways through...everything. This causes problems such as unnecessary death and missing your task instructions.
--Make sure you make it VERY CLEAR that everyone *must* stick together. There are dropoffs and pits and such where if you make a wrong turn, you'll have to start over again or get left behind. Don't be that guy.
Remember: people will ***** up, and people will get frustrated. Is it worth it? I think it was. And I think it's worth it to help anyone.
Did they make this too hard? Possibly. Getting there is a nightmare. But be calm, be patient, and hope that everyone in your alliance has a level head.
ya... right..
# Feb 23 2005 at 10:59 PM Rating: Decent
finding members for this is nearly impossible. harder then finding a tank for fenrir. It's making me sick just thinking about it, shouting in jeuno for 7 hours only to get 1 member that ends up falling asleep at his keyboard. Somtimes i wish i had a linkshell..
