Summary

Curilla has agreed to help you polish your single-handed sword skills for the upcoming tourneys.

Walkthrough

Min. Job Lvl: 71+ Min. Sword Skill: 240+

If you're ready to accept the mission, head to Chateau d'Oraguille in San d'Oria and speak with the leader of the Temple Knights, Curilla (Elvaan female in I.M. armor). If you meet the requirements, she will tell you that you have progressed sufficiently in skill level to compete in the San d'Oria tournaments, but that you need to perform one last feat of sword mastery before you may challenge San d'Oria's best.

She proceeds to hand you a key item as well as a sword, the Sapara of Trials. She instructs you to master the sword by weakening it's powers, which roughly means you need to remove the latent effect off of it by participating in skillchains and performing weapon skills. The number of SCs and WSs you need to do before the sword is sufficiently weakened goes by a strict point-based system, also please keep in mind that the monster you fight must also be EP or above:

Solo-WS or opening any level SC: 1 pt.

Close LVL1 SC: 2 pts.

Close LVL2 SC: 3 pts.

Close LVL3 SC: 5 pts.

Total Needed: 300 pt.

Participate in SCs until you've accumulated enough points for the latent effects on the Sapara of Trials to dissappear. Note: the text on the item description will remain, but the effects will expire. The best way to do this is find a SAM buddy and and do Swift Blade > Tachi: Gekko and then switch the order around on the next and so on. Chaining with a DRK and Cross Reaper would work too, but DRKs don't get TP as quickly.

After the latent effects are off of the Sapara of Trials, return to Curilla and trade her the sword. She will hand you yet another key item and tell you to proceed to Quicksand Caves.

PLD Weapon Skill NM: Girtablulu

You will Need: - Balanced alliance of 12+ Lvl70+ people, - Map of Quicksand Caves:(from Treasure Coffer), - Silent Oils, - Lots of patience.

After turning in the sword, Curilla asks you to go to Quicksand Caves, find a ??? inside and kill Girtablulu, a difficult NM scorpion. Of course, like most everything for us PLDs, it's not as easy as it sounds. If just killing the scorpion NM wasn't hard enough, getting to the ??? is an even harder task.

The Altepa Gate

You need to get this gate open before you can reach the NM. The gate is located at (I-6) of Western Altepa but is only accessible through Quicksand Caves and can only be opened when 4 columns/switches are activated. At this point, you're going to have to split up the alliance into 4 seperate groups to go after each column/switch to open the gate. Remember, mobs in Quicksand Caves will still aggro at 70+ so it's a good idea if everybody can Sneak themselves.

1) Emerald Column Send 2 party members to (D-12) of Western Altepa Desert. From there, have them zone into Quicksand Caves and head for (F-7) on the map. On the way, they may encounted a door that can only be opened by having 2 people stand on a weight-switch. Once at (F-7) they will find a sand whirlpool where they can drop through to a lower level. Once they've dropped, have them head to the zone at (H-4) on the map. Once they are back in Western Altepa Desert, they should see the Emerald Column. Have them click on the column and head back to join the rest of the alliance.

2) Sapphire Column Send another 2 party members to (G-5) of Western Altepa Desert. Have them zone into Quicksand Caves and pass through another weight-switch doorway and head for the zone at (D-8) on their map. Once there, have them look for the Sapphire Column and examine it to activate it. After they are done, have them catch up with the rest of the alliance.

3) Topaz Column Send the rest of the alliance to (J-9) of Western Altepa Desert and have them wait at this spot until the gate is opened. Send 1 party member into Quicksand Caves and have them head for (D-11). Then have them head to the farthest room on their right-hand side and fall through a whirlpool to a lower level. From there, have them zone to (C-6) to Western Altepa Desert where they can reach and examine the Topaz Column. When they are done, have them re-join the alliance at (J-9).

4) Ruby Column Once the other 3 switches/columns have been activated, gather the entire alliance at (J-9) of Western Altepa Desert and enter Quicksand Caves. Head north to (K-6) and drop through yet another whirlpool. From there, have the entire alliance zone to (N-4) on the map to Western Altepa Desert.

From here, send 1 person to activate the Ruby Column while the rest of the alliance heads north through the interconnected tunnels to the Altepa Gate at (I-6). The Altepa Gate looks like a tall set of double doors. Once all 4 columns have been activated, the Altepa Gate will open and stay open for about 15-30 mins. Make sure everybody hurries through the gate and once the alliance is gathered behind it, proceed into Quicksand Caves.

The ??? to spawn Girtablulu is at (I-6) on your map once you've entered Quicksand Caves. Be careful, the mobs in this area should check Decent or Even to 70+ and there is an NM that lurks around the center area and it detects through Sneak. Clear the room at (I-6) of all mobs and prepare for a fun fight.

Girtablulu

Girtablulu can be fought like any mid-level NM. The scorpion has rotten accuracy but hits hard when it connects. There's not much AoE to speak of but keep your mages well away for safety. The only thing to really worry about is to watch the tank's hp when Girtablulu performs it's special attack, which can cause significant damage. Make sure to bring adequate healing power and this fight should go by without a hitch. Once Girtablulu is dead, check the ??? again to receive yet another key item.

Now head back to San d'Oria and speak w/ Curilla again. After a short cutscene where you learn a bit more about Curilla and her eye, you will receive your long-awaited prize: Savage Blade!

Use the Records of Emmescense challenge number of kills. Charts 200 kills. you should be able to WS or chain at least once on every mob.

It says you can trade the sword to NPC to check your progress, however after book burning in the sewers under sandy from 78-80 and then earning 21 Merit Points, i traded the sword to her and she still said i have a long road ahead.......i had full aurore doublet armor for haste/ store tp and used ever time i hit 100. Can you break the sword in an ally? Also what is the text for this check?

You could start by running to the room of the three gargoyles. Push in the right tongue and a door might lead you down a staircase into the wall climb. Here, you must choose your next path. You could race up to the observatory, spin the sundial and pass into the room of the golden idols. Once there, push down on their bases to release the doors, that may take you below or lead you into the shrine of the silver monkey. Assemble the statue there and you may be headed for the torch room. If the elevator is up, you could jump into the elevator and descend into the mineshaft. You might climb up the ladder or plow through the stone wall. Find the key and it may unlock the tombs of the ancient kings, allowing you to climb into the spider's lair. If you escape, you may have a chance to sit upon the throne of the Pretender. If the correct door is unlocked, you'll be able to crawl into pit of despair and finally make you way through the cave of size, back to the temple gate. The choices are yours; and yours alone. Good luck!

The NM was an absolute joke. As for the weapon skill itself, I never see ANYOEN ever talking about it. from my experiance, the damage seems to be a bit TOO random, I TYPICALLY do in the 300's to easy prey as rdm, but once in a while, I will see around 500, or as low as 70 @.@ and yes, vs the exact same mobs and exact same gear. No logical reason why this is, but it's definitely a better ws than fast blade if you are playign rdm without a sub that gives you vorpal blade, otherwise, vorpal does WAY more damage.

Well this Message is for Mrbuff. Salvage Blade is a nice WS, However without the multipliers it will be random, Try this.... (Modifiers: STR:30% ; MND:50% from your base) this will help with the STR and Acc of your Savage Blade.
can i?

My only guess is you may have had another WSNM quest active. That also will keep you from getting the quest.

So do solo skillchains count? I mean, as long as you have the weapon in your main hand, are you aloud to use chain affinity to break the latent or can you only use weapon skills?

1mob=?points
# Dec 28 2006 at 2:45 AM Rating: Decent
If you do more than one SC/WS on a single mob does each one count? I sure as hell hope it does...

I'm just scared because I thought when I helped my mnk friend break latent for Asuran Fists it actually broke at the end of the fight, so maybe it only counts at that point... but then maybe he killed w/ WS, or maybe it still counts all the points you should have gained.

Anyone know?

I've done two WSNMs: Retribution and Savage Blade. The first time, I didn't bother counting because I figured it would take so long to get the Pole of Trials clean I'd lose count.

But the second time, I did count. Thus, I can tell you that the number of mobs doesn't matter, only the number of WS/SC. In addition, you only get the points for an SC if the SC actually goes off. If your WS kills the mob before the SC happens, you only get the point for a single WS. =\

Put simply: Multiple WS's per mob are just fine.

The monsters in Dynamis certainly are higher than EP to everyone, yet they don't give XP. Has anyone "broken" their sword during dynamis?

For those who counted their points, did you try it out in Dynamis and did you get points there?

I did this fight last night with a 75 Pld(me), 75 Pld, 72 Pld, 75 Rdm, 75 Drk, and 70 Whm. Getting there was fine. the 72 Pld and 75 Rdm knew exactly where to go and how to get there so they lead.
I tanked because I had highest base defense and I was the only one that had a taco. Everything went smooth until the Drk pulled hate. He had done alot of Absorb spells. So he was the only one doing alot of damage and was weapon skilling alot. It turned and 1 shotted him. The mob bounced around us then the 72 Paladin went through his spill of abilities to tank it. It hit him a few times then WS'd and killed him(about 900 dmg). The mob was close to dead so I 2 hr'd just to be safe. We killed it, Whm raise 3'd the Drk and 72 Pld. We touched the ??? and then went on our merry way.

After 3 months of asking for help and not getting ANY from my cowardly ls (Horizons on Alexander, now dropped, fair warning), I finally have this done, from joining a random pick-up party. Getting there took a while, but if everyone knows their specific task, getting there isnt so bad. Once there, clear the room and pull it into the hall. Save your tp for spirits within, and with full tp, and a party of 6 volleying it, it will die in a few seconds, lol. I'm curious, this weapon is equipable by a 71 rdm, so say I was to activate the quest as my 75 warrior(with capped sword), and then try and get points as my 71 rdm, even though skill wouldnt be high enough for the weapon skill at that lvl, would it work?

I don't see why not. The game probably takes into account the weapon you're WSing with, not the job.

ok... i activated this quest as 74 rdm, and got my sword

at this point i never checked my quest log to see if the quest was open.. i just assumed it because i got the sword

i spent a couple of hours with a mnk friend in one sitting and about an hour with a sam friend breaking the latent

i am absolutely 100% positively sure the latent is broken... i no longer gain the bonus of the latent effect (+20HP and +10 fire/aero resist)

but i am told all i have to do is trade the sword back to the starting NPC and get a key item... however, trading the sword back does not do anything and when i talk to the NPC with the sword equipped or in my inventroy... she gives me the starting CS again... and at the end it tells me i cannot obtain the Sapara of Trials, come back after sorting my inventory... it says this obviously because i already have one.

ive tried everything... zoning... logging out... trading the sword... talking to her with and without the sword equipped

and also... how is it possible that i have been through the CS and gotten the sword... but the quest is not in my quest log?

hellllpp meeee... is this a glitch? or am i missing something?

k well i dunno why... but it wouldnt let me edit my post...(lifes just full of glitches past couple of days i guess =\)

but anyways... just wanted to fill you in
I talked to a GM about this and yes it was a glitch... however, the GM did what GM's do and just said {That's too bad.} and that i need to DROP my broken sword... yes drop it.... and redo the quest from scratch....

i am quite P/O'd

but i try to keep my cool because the GM is being nice about it atleast and i know its not his fault.... so i ask him to take a screen shot with me lol... so he pops in Ghelsba Outpost (sp?) next to me (dont ask why i was there)
and we take a series of screenshots together... however the last one is the best... check em out.
(it was the least i could do for all the times GM's helped me out *cough*)

felt a lil bit better afterwards i guess =\

This is /hurray from us...

2 questions, one do you have to get points in one session or you can log off and come back and the points will still be intact and can you do more then one ws quest at a time?
RE: key item reward

Yes your points get saved
No you can only quest one WS at once
You can cancel the current quest though, completely losing the points, if you want to start another

You don't need a "Balanced alliance of 12+ Lvl70+ people" for this. We did it with just 3 people, WAR75,* WHM75 (me), and RDM75. It was a little bit difficult but we still beat it first try. Good luck. :)

*edit: Yeah, it was a WAR75, not a NIN75. Thanks for correcting me, Inia. XD

It was WHM75, RDM75/BLM37(me) and WAR75/NIN37 actually^^

WAR/NIN spammed Rampage, Bigguy kept him cured, I did standard RDM stuff (Refresh, Haste, debuff, back-up cure, etc).

I now have Savage Blade :D

And Bigguy has Black Halo, and the WAR - also a BST75 - has Spiral Hell. WSNM 3x3 Aw, yeah. The Black Halo pot was harder than this scorpion.

I'm a rdm and I've been so disappointed by this...71rdm I thought that savage blade was 230, I get there and look here to find I'm wrong, but no problem I'm 232+2+2=236 sword skill when I leveled, and I would get 4 levels next time. I spend a long time trying to get 240 since I was in a skill up pt with 8 people and I was the only mage...hard to skill up...I finally get it and no quest. so lame...merits don't work for getting your trials weapon, you have to have 240 base skill, just trying to save some from the same trouble I had
um...
# Jan 06 2006 at 5:05 PM Rating: Decent
nevermind... this NM is ridiculous easy... it's soloable with top notch nin or thief gear. It's definetly duoable with blink tank and red mage.
