Battle Notes

In order to enter the battlefield you will need to bring a Cloudy Orb, which is obtained by trading 20 Beastmen's Seals to Shami at (H-8) in Port Jeuno. When you are ready, trade the Cloudy Orb to the Burning Circle inside Waughroon Shrine and choose to enter the battle Crustacean Conundrum.

Up to 3 people may enter and you will all receive a level 20 restriction. You have 15 minutes to win. You will fight 3 Crabs. Two Metal Crabs and a Heavy Metal Crab.

The Heavy Metal Crab has 35 HP and the Metal Crabs have 25 HP. Each crab has Crab Special type attacks and the Heavy Metal Crab in addition has Waterga and Blind. They cannot be charmed but are susceptible to silence and bind. Most attacks do 0-2 damage with a majority doing 0-1. All three crabs also have a Drain attack for 15 HP.

Did this 3 times with
RDM/WAR
RDM/NIN
THF/NIN

and 1 time with
RDM/WAR
RDM/NIN
MNK/THF

All were succesfull.

Tactic:
Buff with Protect, Shell, Enthunder. Food not needed, although the RDM/WAR will benefit from boiled crab :)

RDM/WAR vokes Metal Crab, RDM/NIN casts Paralyze. Metal Crab dead in ~10-30 seconds.

RDM/WAR vokes/attacks Metal Crab, RDM/NIN casts Paralyze. Metal Crab dead in ~10-30 seconds.

RDM/WAR vokes Heavy Metal Crab, RDM/NIN casts Paralyze+Slow+Blind.

All were equiped with Beestinger and/or platoon daggers. Hi-potions keep the RDM/WAR alive, with back-up Cure IIs between crabs or when current crab drains itself to full.

MNK Hundred Fists in 4th fight did SOME damage, but RDM/NIN with platoon daggers and Enthunder will outdamage this...

Current (server) record with this tactic is 3:5

body drop rate
# Mar 29 2005 at 9:49 PM Rating: Decent
I can now confirm that the body drop rate is 100% I got the drop 15/15 times for my LS the best line up for this is RDM/NIN RDM/NIN RDM/NIN with the fastest dagger you can use. (platton and beestinger work very well) EVERYTHING hits for 1 DMG in there so forget about ATK and all of that. All RDM should cast protect on themselves as well as Enthunder and barwater thats it. Do not use blaze spikes they do not work do not use dia it does not work do not use bio, yeah you guessed it it does not work. Yagudo drinks are a must in the food department and boiled crab is also very helpful. I worked really hard to figure this out so please rate up when if it helps :p

Ah yes before the flaming starts RDM can tank this you bind the heavy crab and own the other 2 with your enthunder in all of 30 seconds flat and you keep heavy silenced as long as you can do that no tank is neccesary for this at all.

sounds good, but why NIN sub? you don't get utsusemi or any attack speed added. i think maybe all RDM/MNK? more hp and counter attack ^^
i'll try it out and update this post if i remeber to ^^.... but thanx for the tip ^^

I tried this with 2 of my friends. 2 of us had rdm at 20+, but one didn't, so he could only be brd, thf , whm, blm, smn, or nin. So we figured if bind and silence are good, lullaby would be GREAT! Hume brd20/whm10 with +27 charisma (including tuna sushi) could not land a single offensive song: lullaby, threnody, or requiem. We took out the metal crabs, but couldn't do enough damage to the main one. The bard died, we rdms were getting low on mp, so we ran. Also, we did rdm/smn *2. Carby really helped on the metal crabs but didn't do squat to the heavy. He did manage to tank the heavy for a few hits to keep him off us, though.

So 2nd and 3rd rounds, we tried the suggestion put down earlier with our own spin.

Rdm/Smn
Rdm/Smn
Thf/War

Close fight on round 2 (our first try with this setup). Round 3 I died (taru rdm/smn) after the 2 metal crabs, but they barely squeaked through. We just need to go back and get our other person his mannequin body, and we'll be set.

I just wanted to post both that our one try showed a maxed charisma bard as useless in this fight, and that the 2 rdm with thf tank setup does work, even if not ideal. We used food and juices, too.

UPDATE:
We tried RDM/NIN THF/WAR MNK/THF The thief could not keep the hate, the RDM died after the two metal crabs, and I used hundred fists to finish off the heavy. Moral: hundred fists, of course, is magic in this fight. Having spent, my 2 hr, I went back and changed to RDM/NIN for 2 of those with the thf tank. I died on an early waterga, and they couldn't beat it.

Came back later with a different person that needed the body. She had MNK, so we did MNK/WAR +RDM/NIN * 2. Used mithkabobs of all things. No need for 2 hour, I didn't even use a juice. Not a record, but it was like cutting through butter two times in a row.

Ok folks, here you go. I recently decided to take up this bcnm and refined my original strategy. For 100% success use rdm/whm mnk/war thf/war. There is no other setup that will win 100%. We dominate with these jobs and it never takes more than 3 and a half minutes.

i mean, when u run in, who tanks what while rdm binds n silences which one?

Party Formation:
MNK/WAR Elvaan (Haven)
MNK/THF Elvaan (Rasherbman)
MNK/WAR Galka (Daywhite)

Fairly simple battle:

at beginning Buff up with Fish Kabobs, use dodge + boost, i recommend bringing 2 Hi=Potions each.

gangbang The Heavy Metal Crab with 2 hr specials (Hundred Fists), once he is dead the other 2 are easy. We still had a good 20 seconds left of our specials...

Clear Time 1 Minute 57 Seconds... we hold the record...

Did this BCNM last night and successful won the battle setting a new record. How'd you do it? Well for the most part I listened to the posts on this forum. Here is my setup.

Rdm/Nin
Rdm/Nin
Thf/War

I chose thf to tank with because for 1 I don't have pld lvl'd, nin doesn't hold shadows well by themselves vs 3 mobs, and war just didn't seem like the best choice for this one. Second, the theme of this battle doesn't seem to be about taking a hit but getting missed so they can't drain. Thf has high evasion naturally and with bone +1 gear, traveler's mantle, cotton headband, and a jackolantern as food = 23 evasion bonus without counting agi. Also, thf has the 2hr Perfect Dodge. I am not gonna talk about strategy too much except to say, bind the Heavy metal and one metal if you can (don't count on it...just little easier if bind holds). Make sure tank runs and vokes the H. M. Crab first to get hate. Then take out H. Crab (unbinded), then H. Crab (attempted Bind), then go for the H. M Crab saving Perfect Dodge for when is health is down bout half way to prevent drain near winning. The main thing that I would like to focus on is food and medicine. This battle was easy for one reason alone, I got alchemy to 60 so i made 36potions...gave ~8 to each rdm and kept ~20 (also had 3 x-potions just in case). Now these bad boys are really cheap to make so having a bunch cost me next to nothing. Then I made the following macro /item "Potion" <me> (Turned me into an evasive pld ^^). The rdm's didn't cure me once for the whole battle. This let the rdm's keep themselves alive and cast all of their enfeebles. I also had selbina milk for regen. The rdm's had the potions i gave them, pies, juices, and ethers. They didn't have to use one ether cause I cured myself and the juices kept their mp high. Becuase of this the battle was pretty easy. Also make sure rdm's have up barwater on themselves, blaze spikes, enthunder, etc. And everyone should carry a beestinger and another dagger if /nin(platoon has low delay like beestinger). Well that's bout everything...good luck and hope you get your mann. body.

theres no way this won, who tanked?the thf? this setup wouldnt last a second, perfect dodge only last 30 seconds,after that it would take maybe 15 second to kill the thf and regain all lost hp with drain. im 1/3 on this, the rdm idea doesnt work, the nin tank idea doesnt work, hundred fists with 3 mnks could take these down

My LS has a couple people that do this daily for everyone in the LS, they use smn/whm mnk/war thf/war and yes the THIEF tanks the HM once it is down to about half life, PD lasts long enough at that time to finish it off.They do not, however, like most of these posts say, kill the weaker crabs first.

Well, two friends and I did this fight twice today, each one setting new server records. Our makeup was:

Drex - Galka Mnk/War wearing Merc. sitabaki, kote, purple belt, and weilding Cougar Bangals (needed for +ice dmg).

Prymus - Elvan Rdm/Nin wearing standard gear, dual weilding platoon daggers or platoon/beastinger.

Phyra (me) - Mithra Rdm/Whm wearing priests robe, fishscale shield, platoon dagger, Saintly ring, astral ring

1. Food up. Rdms use rollanberry pie, Mnk uses boiled crab. Trade orb and enter.

2. /Whm casts Barwatera & Protectra. Rdms use enthunder and drops yag drink. Mnk chugs selbina milk.

3. Mnk provokes Heavy Metal and uses hundred fists. /Nin casts blind, slow, & paralyze then attacks Heavy Metal. /Whm cures Mnk and attacks Heavy Metal.

4. Keep hacking away and rdms keep Mnk cured. All crabs like to spam Wateraga so keep barwater up. Don't worry about offensive magic as it does no good.

5. Proceed to metal crab 1 then metal crab 2. Follow steps above remembering to debuff.

6. Rdms drop Hi-Ethers as needed and mnk uses hyper potion/x-potion if things get a bit rough.

Occasionally, Heavy Metal uses drain which restores his health. Rarely, he will spam it. Be prepared to run or die if it starts chainspelling drain.

We got total of:
2x Platoon dagger
1x Platoon Cesti
1x Platoon Scythe
2x Mannequin Body
2x beetle quiver
5000 gil (each)

First time was 3:50, second time was 3:10
w00t beat them down!

Well, I was able to successfully complete this BCNM battle yesterday. My party arrangement was as follows:

WAR/NIN <me>
RDM/NIN
RDM/NIN

Like perviously mentioned before the enfeebles are a must. Basically our plan was to start off by having the RDM's binding the heavy crab and one regular crab. Next, silence and paralyze the heavy crab. Meanwhile, I went and voked the "unbound" normal crab and just started whacking away at it. The RDM's of course had Enthunder and Blaze Spikes up. After the first normal crab drops, we move to the next normal one, than finally take down the heavy crab last.

Well, we attempted this BCNM battle 3 times. First two times went great. Everything went according to plan (mostly) and we were able to win! Drops included Mannequin body, platoon mace, mythril beastcoin and some other crap (can't remember everything). However the third time in, we just got raped. The heavy crab resisted bind and it was all down hill from there. We didn't even get one crab killed.

In our first attempt I ended up using two X-Potions because the heavy crab went a little drain happy. I HIGHLY recommend that the RDM's use Yag drinks and than I'm not positive for food, our RDM's used Rolanberry pies for the extra MP. I used a jack-o-lantern for extra evasion (which helped). Also I used a pear al lait for some extra HP regen. Bring some potions is also a good idea just incase the situation gets a bit sticky.

Good luck to everyone that tries this. With some planning and a little luck you can turn these crabs into appetizers.

*PS* With my newly accquired mannequin body, I was able to complete the quest and I now have a completely sick looking mannequin standing in my Mog house ^^

Wow finally all this discussion about this bcnm. I am actually the person who posted on somepage which is where the info for this thread came from. I did this back in September to get my mannequin. Don't overthink this, that was our mistake in our first few attempts. It worked for us about 90% of the time as mnk/war rdm/nin war/nin. Evasion food and equipment are useful and the enfeebs are a must. Let me add that there is no way to win this bcnm 100% of the time. Anyone who posts that they did it easily had luck play a role. I've done it where we went in and the crabs went down like dominoes. I've also done it where the crabs get add effect drain like 90% of the time. If that happens, run for the exit because you cannot win.

It was tough back when we did it, there was no mention of this bcnm anywhere on the net. Congratulations to those who have completed this, it's still tough even when you know how to do it. Good luck to those who attempt and don't give up if you fail the first couple of times.

I just did this bcnm today with this setup:
Rdm/nin Rdm/whm Rdm/war. this was too easy...
all rdm had enthunder and blazespikes on. We went in, bound the heavy crab, and weaker crab, silenced the heavy crab, killed 3rd crab within seconds, then killed other normal crab within seconds, then took out the heavy crab. What will make this easier is that the crabs are susceptible to every enfeeblement besides DOT. the heavy crab was paralyzed most the battle, so it was no problem. did this a few times, sold the Mannequin bodies for 500k each... =D

Equipment, - alternative strats

Well, a few questions and ideas I have... Id like some feedback. NOTE: Most of these are wild speculation that I need help testing. If you want actual proven stratagies, then look at some of the posts below. Im just looking for alternatives and some new strats.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Most important:
First, how big of a role does att and base weapon damage matter? Has anyone tested? Does 'real' damage delt by a weapon affect the chances of it being a 1 more?
For instance, which is better... PLD with a sword at 280 delay, 15 damage... or dagger at 170 delay, 8 damage. If the chances of getting 1 damage are about the same, Id think the lower delay is what mattered.
Also, for the MNKs. WHich is a better choice? Cougars at 6 att, 51 delay, small chance of added Ice damage? Or tropical punches that are only +1 damage, +0 delay, and +10 accuracy? (100 fists with a +0 delay weapon should be quite impressive.)
IF DAMAGE AND ATT DONT MATTER: (if it does matter, ignore the following)
All melee classes should use the fastest weapon they can equip. In most cases, that will be dagger. Ignore polearms, axes, everything. WS dont make all that much a difference.
NIN could still possibly tank this. Just dont dual wield. Go with a weapon like platoon dagger in your main slot, and eat jack-o-lanterns. Thats 150 delay, +10 acc and +10 evasion. (Technically, I suppose a NIN could go with 2 platoon daggers for the same delay, that is 2 attacks every 300... But I'd prefer 1 attack at a faster pace for this fight. You never know, the mob might have 1 hp left, and in the time you are waiting for your dual attack to come... it could drain you for 25 hps.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Second question, is there a way that SMN could get fenrir to tank for them? (I know there arent many SMN that HAVE fenrir... but assuming they do...)

If you could keep the crabs focused on fenrir... seems to me you could use him to avoid that nasty drain. Being a dark aligned summons, he should resist the drains (theoretically). It might even be better to go on lightsday, as that will weaken the potency of drain. And since you arent really needing Fenrir for any massive bloodpact damage, then it shouldnt matter that hes a little weaker that day.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Do poison and dia and such actually do damage over time to these crabs?
Ive never seen anyone mention one way or another. Its suggested that they dont (which would make sense), but never proved one way or another. Its also suggested that its still worth casting, for the damage it does at initial casting. Fast, cheap damage spell and all...
If poison DOES affect the crabs, AND if damage rating doesnt matter... then that low level, not good for much of anything wasp sting gains new power.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

-EXTREME RADICAL IDEA FOLLOWING-
(chances are, this is a bad idea... but then, if we dont take chances, we'll never know... Please dont insult me for suggesting subbing SMN and using the pet... I understand that in normal circumstances, this is insane. But this BCNM is not a normal circumstance.)

If the number of people attacking is what really counts here... And this one is very out there, and might not work at all...

Perhaps subbing SMN for any jobs that dont get a pet, and that dont have a 'needed' sub, would be useful?

Since 20 is still relatively low... I suppose acc is the biggest problem. A level 10 carbie might miss alot... or then, it might not. Doesnt matter if its only pinging the mob... All damage is 1 or 0 anyways.

So... assuming that carbie is able to hit the crabs even subbed SMN... You could always go in with several ether, hi-ether, and mulsums. Even non-mage jobs (that arent tanking) might benifit from popping a rolanberry pie, and lots of MP regen items. Sure, this is rather gil intensive... But it MIGHT be an option.

Like I said, competely radical and probably doomed... but maybe? Its worth a shot if someone has 20 seals, and wants to try something for giggles. Might turn out to be useful, never know. And if it does work... that would make a strong sub for RDM. Dagger + elemental + Carbie = 3 damage per round.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Anyways, any answers that could be provided would be useful in working out alternate strats. Might even find a way to work DRK into it (assuming they could use a dagger and carbie).
I would appreciate if there was actual testing to back them up. I dont want people saying they are invalid, cause we all know DRG should use polearm, and that SMN sub should never rely on pets for damage. Please help me out with first hand knowledge. Thanks alot.
As a fellow drk who has tried this (sub nin dual wielding swords) drk is in all honesty one of the worse jobs for this bcnm. I would say rng and mnk are best here. IF souleater wasnt a lvl 30 skill then i could see drk doing well topping maybe 5HP per hit but this is after all a BCNM20
In all honesty... Id say probably not.
This fight is all about the fastest hits. Not the strongest.
A darks massive damage output with long delay... yeah, that doesnt work when ALL damage is reduced to 1 or 0.
Sadly, as many DRK leveled WAR first... Not gonna be much help either. MAYBE if the war equiped the beestinger or platoon... some dagger with the lowest absoulute delay... And their 2 hour guaranteed every hit was a critical 1hp of damage?? But...
I think either you are going to need to level a new job to 20 to do this BCNM, find a friend who is willing to do it for you, or go buy the mannaquin body off someone else. >< sorry.
I've managed to do this BCNM 2 times, here's my experience:
RDM/WAR Xorathaa
RDM/THF Kristal (me, RDM/BRD might have been better for Dia+Requiem combo.)
SMN/WHM Princesstb
The Drain Attack from the crabs is actually much higher, I've seen up to 28.(on our low DEF SMN who managed to draw agro.) It's an additional damage-type, so Slow, Paralyze and Blind are very helpfull. The crabs can cast Bio, Blind and Waterga, as well as the normal crab abilities.
Drops: (2 rounds)
Mannequin Body x2
Platoon Mace
Bronze Ingot
Bronze Sheet
Beetle Quiver
Crab Shell
Land Crab Meat x3
Mythril Beastcoin
Fish Oil Broth
Suggested party:
any 3 jobs that can enfeeble(Slow, Para, Blind and especially Dia), cure(or hi-potions) and deal double damage at lvl 20. This means, RDMs(at least 2!), with a 3rd being BSTs, SMNs and DRGs, preferable with a fast dagger (platoon dagger!)
Other jobs can ofcourse take the 3rd spot, or use 2hrs, but the trick is to do as MANY hits as possible before the crabs' drain kicks in.
Dual wielding ninja are not fast.
Depending on the number of drains, this fight can be easy or tough. Take at least 2 yagudo drinks/hi-ethers, and 4 hi-potions, as well as tank-food. Chances are, you will not need the hi-ethers or hi-potions, but they will help a LOT if the Heavy Metal Crab goes drain-happy.
Finished this in 4'04 first time, 6'31 2nd time
