Summary

Find Stray Cloud's friend Gubokka in the Sea Serpent Grotto.

Walkthrough

Talk to Stray Cloud and he'll tell you about his friend who went to explore Sea Serpent Grotto and never came back, he'll offer a hefty reward if you go and find him. When you attempt to leave Norg, his friend Gubokka will come in and tell you about a Hume who saved him and how he feels bad about being selfish, leaving the Hume to die.

The quest objective now becomes finding the Hume who saved Gubokka. Go to (K-6) on the first map Of Sea Serpent Grotto to find a ???. Clicking it will spawn a NM Sea Monk called Glyryvilu, which is one of the new NMs. Defeat it, and touch the ??? again for a cutscene. You will receive a Key Item, which is the sword that the Hume gave you. Return to Norg and talk to Stray Cloud to receive yet another sad cutscene and receive the Light Buckler as your reward.

Just solo'd this fella. Had a giggle as I was stood at the pool with the ??? buffing and someone came by to /check my bazaar just as I popped the mob and ran back into the tunnel with it, think he about had a heart attack right there. Anyway, it did Cross Attack twice during the fight, never broke through shadows though and with Bio III/Poison II/Slow II/Blind/Gravity up and Enthunder/Ice Spikes active it was no problem to recast shadows when he did CA. Never took a hit through shadows/Stoneskin/Phalanx.

Scare someone today, stand with your bazaar up at the ??? while folk are running around doing ASA!

Did this as 75RNG/NIN. Easy fight for any 75 really, but it is a Sea Monk and you should always be careful with those. She double attacks and hit me for ~50+ damage on each swing, so don't waste too much time or things can go bad quick.

Sleep bolts didn't proc (mob is unsleepable according to another poster) so I just melee'd until I could SS > Barrage > SS and that left just a couple shots with Holy Bolts to finish her off.

I accidentally popped this NM solo while farming for Gem of the East. I had about 50% mp but I got him down to nearly 25% before his Cross Attack did me in. After that I let him despawn, reraised and regrouped.

I came back with all buffs up and 100% mp. Spawned him and pulled back a bit in case of death again. I hit him with Slow and Paralyze which both stuck and worked rather well. I used Afflatus Misery and cast Auspice to hopefully reduce his special attacks. As long as I had shadows up I had no problems. His Cross Attack would take both my shadows and I would immediately recast. His Maelstrom attack never hurt much even without Stoneskin and Blink. Eventually he caught me between shadows and Cross Attack took 553 hp. I immediately used Afflatus Solace and cast Cure 5 to recover and gain temporary stoneskin. Recast blink and kept going. I used Hexa Strike every chance I had which did damage of 550 and took about 20% of his hp. Another poorly timed Cross Attack took me dangerously low and I only had mp for Cure 3. I came within seconds of using Benediction but he finally fell.

HP remaining was 359/1002 and MP 11/939. All in all not bad. About as hard as an EP++ with a nasty TP move.

Spawned the thing... Missed me ten times in a row. I figured, pathetic.
Then it used Cross Attack... Took two shadows. I never bothered recasting, and I started to pay for it - It followed up with another, for 532 damage. It soon followed with another for 635.

I survived with 555 HP (Used Chakra towards the end)... But yeah. If you're not an idiot like me and keep your shadows up, he's pathetic. But damn that attack hurts. :3
It never hit me with a regular attack, so other than the special, it has horrible accuracy.

I had logged off in Norg last night after grabbing my Tachi of Trials and ran out to meet some freinds at a bar. Afterwards, I cam back a bit... tipsy... and decided it was time to find myself a map of Sea Serpent Grotto. Ran around for a bit not really caring about the hits I was taking, and I was down to about 1100/1352 HP when I saw a '???' and thought I'd click on it. As Glyryvilu spawned I knew I was in trouble, having read the horror stories here.

My first thought was to zone it, but when I saw it was only hitting for 52-60 damage I decided to Samurai up, 2-hour, and see what happened. Gekko -> Yuki -> Gekko -> Gekko nets you three SCs (Induration, Fragmentation, and Distortion) so that certainly helped... as did Seigan + Third Eye and capped Evasion. When the fight was over, he had only done about 300 total damage to my Elvaan butt and-thankfully- both of his attempts to Cross Counter whiffed ^^

So, it's soloable as a beat-up, unbuffed SAM71/WAR35 with a two-hour and some dumb luck...

Just accidentally solo'd this as BRD75/NIN37. Not too hard, but his Cross Counter hit me when shadows were down and did nearly 500 damage.

A 75 RDM buddy of mine died to this.. he was rdm/blm at the time and underestimated its Cross Counter attack. Needless to say, he switched sub to nin, and of course I'm rdm/nin when i'm running around, and we totally smashed it into pieces. IMO, I think my wife coulda soloed it with my rdm pretty easily. I took most of the hate and ate maybe 200 dmg from the cross attacks, which it used like 3 times. Used standard buffs and debuffs during the fight. Not too bad if you keep ur buffs fresh and zerg his ***.

Decided to try this as 75RDM/BLM since I was in the area. I read all these posts saying that the NM is dangerous and likes to spam Cross Attack, and I was a little worried.

This thing is a total joke. It uses five TP attacks the whole time, and didn't "spam" anything in particular. It switched between Maelstrom, Whirlwind, and Cross Attack, and the only time it ever managed to break my Stoneskin was with Cross Attack, which did about 250-300dmg on average, but that's by no means scary. Toward the end, I even just started playing with it to see if the "TP Regen" theory was correct, and...it's not. This thing might gain TP from you hitting it, or from hitting you, but calling it "spam" is very inaccurate. Even at 10% health, it wasn't using TP attacks if I wasn't actively hitting it. It hits like an old lady, and is just about as accurate. If you have access to Stoneskin/Utsu and you can heal what damage Cross Attack does, you have nothing to be afraid of.

Good luck to everyone wanting to try this. You'll be fine!

Ok i was heading through SSG and saw a ??? so i click it and spawn this thing as a 69pld/war(forgot i had the quest activated). I start fighting and not long in it does a Cross attack for 458 i cure 4 and was kinda worried. i kept fighting doing swift blade when its ready. It does Cross Attack again for 317 then again not long after for 569. I used invincible and then sentinel when it ran out and used the rest of my mp to heal. i was getting very low on HPs about 370 left with no mp. It used cross attack again for 226 and then i used swift blade and finished it off with 19hp left. My word of advice is dont go clicking ??? when you dont know what it is for.
gross attack

Got the cut-scene while entering Norge. Thought lets try it. Though I'm only level 54 I've always got my NPC-buddy to rely on. But with two cross-attacks on my NPC-buddy (one hit her for 863 the other for 882) which caused her to die I decided to warp out. I'll have to wait a few (understatement) levels.
easy

killed this mob twice never once used its cross attack, it did maelstrom once and whirlwind once dealing a total of 200dmg to my 68nin... easy fight

Ok I killed it again cause I forgot to the loot the spawn point and noticed that the reason I thoguht it was not using cross attack is because it never dealt damage. It would take off two shadows from utsusemi and thats it. Frankly any melee/nin should be able to take this mob @65+ w/o much trouble at all. and could duo it many levels below that (as in a DD and healer)

While seeking for party as Sam72, I brought my taru npc fighter out and fighted Sahagin to lv up her. Out of curiosity I clicked on ???, bam I saw this white and blue Kraken pop out. In my mind I thought this thing was a piece of cake because I was Sam72/nin36 (HP: 1118)with 300tp ready. Engaged the mob and Gekko his butt, then I used mediate. Out of nowhere, Cross Attack did 594 dmg on my taru's butt and that much dmg freaked the hell out of me; also that attack ignored the blink I had on. Then I did Gekko x4 (meditate + 2hr) and took it down to 10% HP. Fun part coming, it went crazy and used maelstrom on me and that move took my blink off, and then finised me off with it final fataliy move "Cross Attack" 600 dmg, my taru's butt went upside down. Two hours later, came back as Mnk75/nin37 with 300tp, then woop the hell out of this NM.

watch out for cross attack spam at low HP. rips stoneskin off it does, and cross attacks you again before you can get stoneskin up again in time.
so very very close... ><
should have spammed thunder at the end if I knew it'd do that.

I came prepared... i am a lvl 66 thf/nin... came with 3 X Potions, ate sole sushi, used a scroll or reraise, got Protect and Shell IV from a PLD fishing nearby wich helped alot... had sleep bolts but i only used bloody bolts... i didnt call my npc, and i built up full TP before the fight. I used Dancing Edge at the begining of fight and at about 86% TP it used Cross Attack for the first time, and i guess i only had one shadow up it did 700 damage, and was left with about 350hp... it has bad accuracy so keeping shadows up wasnt that hard, but i used a X potion then and kept spaming bloody bolts, Dancing Edge, and kept shadows up... i was around 700-900 HP the rest of the figth untill it was down to about 5%hp and went alittle nuts, and got me down to 400 HP by using Maelstrom followed by Cross Attack, at wich point i decided to use Perfect Dodge cuz losing at that point would just suck... killed it 15 seconds later... used all my X potions and about 40 bloody bolts. Just wanted to share incase anyone was thinking about soloing it. It was a fun fight. Sorry i should have posted this in the NM section of the quest not here... forgive me...

Hello, used a DC crab from the room where mindgazers spawn. Buffed with stoneskin and blink, spawned the mob. . . crab did so well he was @50% HP after the fight and thats after he got hit with that crossreaper attack that did 700+ dmg. I did melee, but the crab did most of the damage, I didn't even get enough TP to use weaponskill.

Did this quest while completing the Utsusemi: Ichi quest.

I guess I was misled by the many negative reports below, and grossly overestimated this mob.

I'm a very run-of-the-mill RDM75 at present; no HNMLS, so no God/Sky gear, and only a handful of merits. I activated the quest by chance and thought "a tough solo fight, sounds like fun -- let's go for it". After all, Glyry is a shade more photogenic than the average Vana'diel villain! Taking into account the gory descriptions below, I geared like a mini-PLD -- VIT +28, DEF 297, Ogre gear, RSE2, Cheviot cape and Jelly ring (the only mildly interesting item) for physical damage down of 10% or more -- and ate a Taco which raised DEF to 440. Went /BLM as I am still working on /NIN, and used a Misericorde since that has some useful defensive stats. It was not hard; most mobs find RDM as easy to hit as the side of a house but, even without Blind, Glyry was missing more than she hit me, and in this setup, Phalanx absorbed most of those hits. The only significant damage she was able to do was with Cross Attack. I forgot to hit the ??? after the first time fighting her, so had to go back for a second round. She used Cross Attack two or three times per fight, didn't always connect with them, and the worst by far was for 650 when Stoneskin was down. My dagger was hitting for 30-40, plus 17 from Enblizzard each time. I got one Evisceration in on each fight, at 200% for about 400 damage. In both fights, Aquaveil wore just as the fight closed, so they took five minutes each, plus or minus a few seconds, and in both cases I finished with full HP and more than 50% MP; there was no need to Convert. Obviously, I could have geared for attack or nuked her and got the fight over a lot quicker.

During the first fight, I re-geared for Enfeebling/INT and tried twice to sleep her with Pluto's staff; capped enfeebling, of course, but no luck. It seems reasonable to assume she's unsleepable.

This mob isn't a complete pansy, as whoever is tanking it needs to be able to take a Cross Attack or two. I can see that, with bad luck, a solo 75 melee without the means to heal himself could land up going down to her; and since she's an insomniac, a solo BLM might struggle a bit as he would need to Bind rather than Sleep her. But with appropriate subjob and preparation, I would think most 70+ and all 75 jobs would be able to solo her.
Not so hard!
# Sep 21 2006 at 2:47 AM Rating: Decent
I was also led to believe that this was unusually difficult.

75MNK/37NIN, been working on an evasion build. I would have went /War and just {Hundred Fists}, but the posts had me somewhat worried about Cross Attack so I decided to go /Nin and straightup fight it.

Well, this thing hits about as hard as Valor from my 8-1 and with about half the accuracy >.> Only hits it landed were a ~500 Cross Attack and ~30 Maelstrom.

Very good story for a quick quest, Id recommend doing it (too bad you can't repeat it -_-)

Just solo'd this NM as 75 Mnk w/ no merrits (yet) got a Protect 3 and Shell 3 no food and a haste ~.^ (whm said he couldn't help himself w/ the haste but I had no heals during the fight) NM had a hell of a time landing normal hits never missed a special thoe hit me with malstrom and whirlwind a total of 5 times never doing more than30 or 40 pt of dmg each, I started the fight w/ 300 TP and finnished him with Asarian Fists (or so I thought) slight mis caculation left mob with a sliver of life enuf get one last hit on me with the dreaded Crossreaper for 806 (and i was zerked O.o I waited to Zerk and Warcry just b 4 last ws) then I dropped him. I had 512/1700 hp after fight and my chakra is good for 276 (which I didn't use until after I killed NM but it was nice knowing it was there if I needed it). All in all pretty easy fight. Obviously having buffs was a big help but I could have easy won using just Dodge, Focus, and Hundered Fists and no buffs or Haste (I think) GL^^
