Diederik has lost a painting ordered by a valued customer. He wants you to help him earn time in order to get a replacement painting before anyone notices.
In order to receive this quest your NPC fellow must be level 50 and you must have first completed A pose by Any Other Name.
Talk to Diederik in Selbina. You need to have your Signal Pearl in your inventory. He will give you the option to either go to Angelica in Windurst Waters or Umberto in Bastok Markets. Your NPC fellow will go to the one you don't.
If you go to Angelica
Speak with Angelica to get a cut scene with her, followed by another cut scene showing what's going on in Bastok. Umberto will mention a Bal Shell. Angelica will ask you to get one for her. You get the Bal Shell by excavating in Korroloka Tunnel. Once you have a shell, trade it to Angelica with your Signal Pearl equipped to trigger another cut scene. She will then ask you for an Opalescent Stone.
If you go to Umberto
Talk to Umberto in Bastok Markets to get a cut scene with him, followed by another cut scene showing what's going on in Windurst. He will then ask you for a Bal Shell. You get the Bal Shell by excavating in Korroloka Tunnel. Once you have a shell, trade it to Umberto with your Signal Pearl equipped to trigger another cut scene. Go back to Selbina and talk to Diederik for another cut scene. Make sure you have your Signal Pearl in your inventory.
Once you've completed one of the two above paths, go to Castle Oztroja and open the Brass Door at (I-8). Go up the stairs to (I-9) and into the courtyard. Proceed east until you get to a Brass Door at (I-8). Click it for a cut scene, then click it again to enter. Click on the ??? in the room to spawn a Yagudo Muralist and your fellowship NPC. After the fight, talk to your NPC and then check the ??? again to get an Opalescent Stone.
Go talk to Angelica in Windurst Waters she will give you an Old Woman's Portrait and ask you to deliver it to Umberto in Bastok Markets. Talk to Umberto to complete the quest.

Just posting this in case anyone else makes the same mistake.
What's missing? How do I get the Bal Shell?
NEVERMIND: Vana'diel Atlas maps incorrectly identifies ??? as an excavation point . They are not. Excavation points say

"Angelica created this portrait using paing made from an opalescent stone."
Since u have the choice of Angelica or Umberto route, for those of u that wish to complete the quest via Angelica instead of Umberto yourself, u must find the same item 'Bal Shell' and trade it to Angelica. This is investigated from a Japanese website and its proven correct since I just completed the quest.
I was unsure whether or not 'A question of taste' quest interferes since u can trade the 'bal shell' at any time, even tho I did completed that quest also in desperation since I was stuck for many hours. Also since trading the item triggers the vids, I m also unsure whether wearing the 'link pearl' has to do with the quest.
I would like to request an update to be done with the walkthrough because its not quite complete with 2 choice paths available to this quest.

First, the Brass Door you want in on the map that Quu Domi the Gallant pops on, up top in the middle of the eastern side.
Second, after beating this joke of an NM, don't disband your NPC, as you have to talk to them fisrt before clicking the ???.
I hope this helps someone else to not tour all the Brass Doors, as i did...
Also, I said right in the walkthrough: Once the Yagudo Muralist is dead, talk to your NPC, then check the ??? again for a key item (Opalescent Stone).
1. To open the brass door as you walk into the Castle, you need to stand in between the two levers and click on the right one. This will open the door.
2. Do not call your NPC out during your time in the Castle because it will not allow you to open the second brass door on the upper level.
I know these may sound noobish but its was worked for me.
Don't know if right after the Angelica quest he would of given me the quest or not but I know that only Chameleon Capers and Angelica's quest were the only 2 quests I did after I ding level 50. Hope this helps you all.
Set your HP near the OP warp guy in your home city (assuming you've done all the supply quests) and just use him to warp around. I did this quest start to finish in around an hour that way. You can OP to Kuzotz when you need to run to go to Korroloka (and if you're BLM, escape from Korroloka straight into Bastok when you're done), to Saruta or Gusta (if you're lucky enough to get them both) for windy and bastok, Zulkheim for Selbina, and either OP to Meriphtaud Mountains or Tele-Mea + chocobo to get to Castle Oztroja.
I know this is probably common knowledge to a lot of people, but for those who don't know, OP warping is one of the biggest time savers in the game... use it well.
what do i do ;;
I went to fight the Yag NM in Oztraja. Got the CS's; clicked the ??? and my fellow and i started to fight the NM.
PROBLEM: The first thing he did was cast sleep2 and slept me throughout the whole ??????? fight! I had barsleepra on; it didnt do ****. And since i had stoneskin on; he's AOE didnt wake me; it should killed my fellow after the third nuke.
Now i donthave key item and i cant resummon him...
Escape out of Oztroja and go back in; u'll get cs again and get to refight NM.
Anyone come across this?

Anyway, try to trade the Bal Shell to her, might work.
Get a Bal Shell from Korolloka Tunnel as stated above, - btw. 3 of 4 Exc. Points that i know are between the first 2 bridges in main tunnel on the way to e.altepa.
Trade the Bal Shell to Angelica, she mention Opalescent Stone and Castle Oztroja.
Go there and fight the Yagudo NM, return with the Key Item back to Angelica for a Cutscene and yet another Key Item: "Old woman's portrait".
Travel to Bastok Markets and speak to Umberto to finish the Quest.
