Summary

A friend of Luto has used a magical costume kit to change into a child, but now he can't return to his original form. Luto wants you to help find a way to change him back.

Walkthrough

To get this quest, you must have the first 5 NPC quests completed which are Unlisted Qualities, Girl in the Looking Glass, Mirror, Mirror, Past Reflections and Blighted Gloom.

Start out by talking to Luto Mewrilah in Upper Jeuno. You will treated to a cut scene which includes a sneaky taru whose merchandise he tries to sell you fail. In order to learn more about how to fix the merchandise, Luto Mewrilah will direct you to Ru'Lude Gardens. Once the cut scene is over, head over to Ru'Lude Gardens and speak with Muhoho who is near the Archduke's Palace to get another cut scene. In this cut scene Luto Mewrilah will tell you to get a Jar of Reversion Dust to fix the taru's broken item, which is found from Gelzerio of Boytz's Knickknacks in Bastok Mines. Here, you will see another cut scene with Gelzerio and Boytz saying that they just ran out of Reversion Dust, but if you want it immediately, to talk to their supplier of the item who is Chamama of Windurst Waters.

Head over to Windurst Waters and talk to Chamama who gladly gives you the Reversion Dust after another cut scene. Once you have the dust in your possession, head back to Upper Jeuno and speak with Luto Mewrilah. She will be happy to help the taru fix his item, but he is nowhere to be found. Your npc fellow suddenly walks by and Luto Mewrilah calls him/her over and asks if they have any idea where to go. Your npc will tell you to try looking in Delkfutt's Tower.

Run to Lower Delkfutt's Tower and check the ??? on the first floor at J-9; you will see yet another cut scene. During this cut scene, your npc will walk off camera and suddenly call you on your linkpearl. Somehow, your npc is already back in Jeuno and asks you to come and meet with them at Luto's spot. Luto Mewrilah is confused how your fellow could have traveled to Jeuno that fast and suggests you follow your "other" fellow and see where they went. I chose to listen to Luto Mewrilah. Continue forward and find another ??? at I-5 on the first floor of Lower Delkfutt's Tower. Examine it and another cut scene will occur where both versions of your npc will meet up. You will ultimately have to decide which npc is the real one. Even though it's probably random, the fake npc for me was on the right and the real one on the left. Nevertheless, Luto Mewrilah thinks she hears something down the corridor and goes to check it out. After being gone for some time, everyone notices she's been gone for awhile. Follow Luto back to the first ??? at J-9 to trigger another cutscene and a notorious monster.

The Notorious Monster is a Magic Pot named Illusory Pot which I easily soloed as a 75 white mage (your npc will also come to help you fight). Once the fight is finished, examine the ??? again to trigger the closing cutscene of the quest. At the end, the taru that you helped will give your choice of one of three items: Tactics Manual of Endurance, Tactics Manual of Might and Tactics Manual of Fortitude. Along with one of the manuals, you will also be given the Costume Kit, the merchandise that the taru tried to sell you from the start.

Correction. You must speak to your NPC before examining the ??? After you kill the NM. If you don't, you can't examine the ??? & must zone and refight the NM.
Tactics Manuals

Just to address two things mentioned below about Tactics Manuals: Someone wrote that "the only way you can get all 3 is by trading with other people who have done the quest." If that was the only way at the time of that posting, it's no longer the case. Now you gain fellow points by leveling your NPC, and you may spend them on Tactics Manuals and get all three. Of course you get one of them from this quest, too. And for the person who asked how to use the manuals, just have them on you when you speak to your NPC at a Rendezvous Point and she or he will say something to effect of, "Oh, is that a Tactics Manual? May I look at it?" And then they will "read" it, learn the fighting style associated with whichever manual it is, and that's that. You keep the manual, so when your NPC learns that style you may either sell it in your Bazaar, trade it to another player for a manual you still need and don't want to spend fellow points on, or simply keep it in case a friend wants to borrow it down the road for their NPC. And as for this Chameleon Capers quest, I have to agree that it really IS super-easy. My NPC was only about level 36-38 when we did this and it was no problem. She's lvl 47 now, so I'm going to get her to 50 and then do Mirror Images, which is the final fellowship bond quest, I believe. Then we'll just have the level cap quests left. She's probably already big enough for Mirror Images but I want to get her to 50 first anyway just to be sure. Anyway, that's all. =^. .^=

Yeah, I just did this today, pretty easy, although the travelling is a pain . My advice to anyone doing this is to plan uot how you are going to get around quickly - saves a lot of hassle :)

no it isnt repetable the only way you can get all 3 is by trading with other people who have done the quest and on that note just did this with 54PLD/27WAR and took me less than a minute to kill it used sentinel once and berserk no need for invincible or anything else was too weak i reckon you could do this at lvl 45 easy maybe even 41 if your a RDM/NIN
easyyyy
# Dec 12 2006 at 5:27 PM Rating: Decent
did it today and it was easier than I expected. I'm a taru rdm/blm lvl 50. I went there with my npc lvl 38 set as attacker. did the usual buffs before the fight ( Protect , Shell, stonskin, phalanx, haste, blaze spikes, enspell.)
I started the fight with 300 tp and it lasted maybe 2 minutes. the only damage I took was when stoneskin was down, maybe for about 100 damge (casting kept being interrupted)

Dont forget to apply silence on the nm. its not necessary but it save some trouble for ur npc ( a-ga spells). The mob started the fight with Thundherga. did 0 damage on me but 200 on my npc (he didnt have shell on) hehe.
Overall, very easy fight and capable of solo at lvl 45ish

WEll this was easier than I thought it would be.....
I took got this 1 rl week after doing Blighted Gloom (dont know if that actually means anything as I had been away a week but knew it didnt give me this quest straight after anyway and I did nothing in that week I was away) Now my NPC buddy is only lv.32 and I'm only lv.45..... I thought it was going to be tough, but I think the NM is based on the lv of your NPC buddy as I used my DRK45/THF22 and I didnt use any potions but my buddy was set to healer. The NM died fairly quickly and I still had 238/830 HP left. In all respects this was EP for me with no problems at all.

So just go out there and kill the damn thing I say and on to the next quest!!

Just to say i beat this last night as RDM65/BLM32, and my NPC was lvl 40.
Got hyped up and did my normal overrating by casting protect 4, shell 3 , haste, phlanx and stoneskin. And well took about 2 mins and got hit for 0 the whole fight. i would say it is doable at 50ish

Illusory Pot HP
# Nov 14 2006 at 9:27 AM Rating: Decent
I finished this with a friend of mine and we did it twice. He's been waiting all summer for me to get this so we finally did it. I believe that the Illusory Pot's HP is dependent upon the level of your NPC. I noticed that the first time we did it (my NPC is 37), that after a Barrage and then 300% TP Flaming Arrow that I had knocked off over 50% of the pot's health, but then when my friend click his ??? and we did it again for him (his NPC being 42), the same tactics and EES seemed to bring it down only a bit more then when I did it for mine. Has anyone else done this with a friend and noticed a difference in difficulty from one pot to the next? Thanks.

I just finished this quest last night - but I picked the wrong Tactic XD I wanted the healing one but I accidentally picked the defensive one... i thought endurance meant the ability to endure an attack or whatever... ah well... if anybody on Remora has TM:Endurance they'd be willing to trade for a TM: Fortitude I'd be a very happy camper :/

Well,I just finished this quest. It was way too easy. Here i was thinking that I might have some trouble with it because my highest job is a 60WHM. I used P3 and S3,stoneskin twice and blink once, and ice spikes for paralyze.Oh yeah, i hasted myself and my npc once. This fight,(if you could call it that), was a total joke. I pawned the NM very easily. For all you whm's out there that think you need help with this sort of stuff...just go out and give it a try and you will find out that you have alot more versatility than you think.
Kinda easy... at least to me X

Solo this as a 50DRK/20NIN, NIN for the sake of Utsusemi XP Use Arcane Circle at the start of the fight and everything go smoothly bcoz since my NPC (currently lvl36) is healer type, she paralyzed the mob so most of the time the mob is paralayzed ^^ had 2/3 HP left.

I beat the NM for this quest yesterday as 51WAR/17nin. (Yes I am lvling ninja b4 lvling WAR anymore. I have been /mnk thus far.) and I didn't have much of a problem with him. He started with Firega which killed my shadows off the bat and he hit fast so I couldn't put them back up till it was casting. Once I did they went down pretty fast again. My npc is at 41 and has a great katana lv5 and was set to attacker. She was also the one on the left during the cutscene b4 the battle. I had some hi potions and hi pot+1 I used 1 or 2 but I think I would have survived without them. I did not have to use 2hr. I decided to chose T.M. Might so if anyone is on Hades and wants to trade for either of the other 2 even just to learn them and trade back let me know.
Meh...Not so bad
# Jun 06 2006 at 11:35 PM Rating: Decent
This quest isn't so hard, just annoying because of all the airship rides you have to take...Then a bunch of CS's and one NM and you're done. The most annoying of all the annoying NPC quests though...

# May 30 2006 at 12:00 PM Rating: Excellent
For more clarification:
1. When you head to Ru'Lude Gardens, head to the top of the palce to the balcony and speak with Muhoho.
2. The shop that Gelzerio works at is in Bastok Mines.
3. Chamama is in the Rarab Tail Hostelry in Windurst Waters.
4. When you kill the pot, talk to your NPC buddy and then click the (J-9)???. If your NPC buddy disapears before you can talk to him/her, or the (J-9)??? will not give you the cutscene: rezone to Qufim and then back to Delkfutt's Towere, click the (J-9)??? again. (You will have to fight the pot again.) Hope this helps.

Getting the quest
# May 22 2006 at 1:06 AM Rating: Default
My NPC is 35, I talk to her every time I fight with her and very often in Jeuno, sometimes 5 times a day.
I just finished Gloom, but can not get this quest yet.
It was suggested that a Windy quest (see Post down below) might need to be done. I completed that quest a very long time ago and know it can not be that.
I did not get Gloom until my NPC hit 35, I guess this one is 40? Before my NPC leveled to 35, I talk to Lute and got the standard blah, blah, blah. I then took my NPC out and she leveled, then left a little while after. I talked to her while fighting/healing. I had NOT talk to my NPC in Jeuno since she was level 34, but I got the Gloom quest anyway. Anyone know for sure what is required to get the quest(s)?
It's not just affinity because I am sure mine is very high. My NPC has stayed out longer than others I've NPC partied with, regardless if their NPC was higher, lower or same level. Mine has even leveled and stayed longer. I have only seen a few ppl's NPC last longer than mine. Though I'm not positive that the length of time your NPC stays out has anything to do with affinity, but it does seem that way.
I will post a reply to this post if I get this quest before my NPC gets to level 40.

check this guide ... also it doesnt matter how MANY times you talk to your npc a day only that you do so once a day, your "friendship" will only increase 1 perday each day you talk to them... doesnt matter if you call them 200 times a day . also make sure you do all the quests up to it .. they allow your max fame that you can have with your npc to rise.

I zoned and had to fight the Pot again. And YES you DO NEED to talk to your NPC as soon as the battle is over cuz, they say the creature dropped something. Which lets you check the ??? for the ending CS.

I'm pretty convinced that the question of "which one is your fellow" is NOT random. If you pay *close* attention to the cutscenes, when you see the Chameleon and your NPC walking in, pay attention to WHO was WHERE.

In the guide above, it says the Fake was the one on the right, and the Real one was the one on the left, that's the way it was for me too. Like Isaid, pay close attention to who is where in the cutscenes and you'll realize why its the one on the left.

npc just hit 46 today. returned to jeuno from my npc training site and talked to luto as i do every couple of days. For two weeks now, if luto hasn't been talking about weapon upgrades, she has been talking about the little girl. Today, she initiates the quest. Specifically, the person in Ru'Lude to talk to is on the Ducal Balcony.
Specifics:
.1. on 5th weapon upgrade
.2. completely used tactics pearl once
.3. completed all the prereq. quests
.4. talk to "my" NPC once a day for about a month
.5. on 4th headware change
.6. have 1st armor lock available
finishing the quest after the maintence cycle completes... but as for the difficulty of the fight? do i be sporting and try my L34 RDM, L39PLD, or just go for the win w/64drg?

Hey everyone, just wondering if someone could give me a hand. I was reading the walkthrough above, and it claimed that the only prerequisite for opening this quest was having done the first five- which I have. However, when I talk to Luto, all she will say is that "Palometa still hasn't opened her eyes..."

My NPC is level 41, and I have given him a new weapon and also done the Promyvion quest. Any guesses as to why this is happening?

i was stuck here for quite some time myself... there seems to be one other prerequisate. In the norther section of windurst waters, in the upstairs part of the rarab tavern place you will find a painter that asks you to put on a certain armor then return to her. I was told this quest needed to be done by a couple ls members so i tried it out and directly after completing this quest i was able to get the Chameleon Capers quest.

btw, the name of the quest in windy is "A Pose by Any Other Name"
RE: Stuck -_-
# May 22 2006 at 12:19 AM Rating: Default
I have already done that Windy quest and still get the line about the girl not openning her eyes, so it's not that.
I talked to Lute immediately after finishing the last quest, so I'm going to talk to NPC, and if that don't work, I'm taking her out to fight and then try again.

YOu probably need a certain amount of npc fame as well. Such as talking to your npc or bringing them out to exp. I'm sure you're close to the fame needed (if that's the problem) since you have already completed the first 5
