Mission Orders

Gather information on San d'Oria and Windurst.
The Bastokan consulates in those two countries will provide you with a detailed briefing.

Walkthrough

Speak to any Bastokan Gate Guard to accept this mission. The Gate Guard will spend you to speak with Naji at (J-8) in the Metalworks, near the President's Office. A cutscene will play and they will escort you to President Karst. You will then be able to ask him questions about various topics and once you are done he will ask you to head to San d'Oria or Windurst.

Visit San d'Oria First

If you choose to visit the Bastok Consulate in San d'Orian first, head to (K-10) of Northern San d'Oria. Enter the Bastok Consulate and speak to Helaku. He will send you to speak with Halver in the Chateau d'Oraguille, north of the Bastok Consulate.

Halver will then send you to Ghelsba Outpost. To get there, take the northwestern exit of West Ronfaure. Once there, your task is to defeat Warchief Vatgit. The Warchief is at the top of Ghelsba Outpost (H-7). After defeating the Warchief, return to Northern San d'Oria to speak with Helaku again.

Helaku will now send you to the Bastok Consulate at (E-5) in Port Windurst. Once you arrive, speak to Melek, who represents the Bastok Consulate. Melek will send you to Heaven's Tower in Windurst Walls. In Heaven's Tower, you will need to speak to Kupipi to receive the Dark Key Key Item. After obtaining the Dark Key, travel to West Sarutabaruta, where you will find the entrance to the Giddeus. Once inside Giddeus, head to Balga's Dais. Here, you will face two monsters (see the The Emissary Spoilers page for more information).

Note:A full party of level 25s is suggested if this is your first time.

After defeating the monsters, return to Port Windurst and speak to Melek again. He will give you a Kindred report Key Item to take back to Bastok. Return to the Metalworks and speak to Naji again, who will reward you with 3000 gil and Rank 3.

Visit Windurst First

If you choose to visit the Bastok Consulate in Windurst first, head to (E-5) of Port Windurst. Speak to Melek, who will send you to Heaven's Tower in Windurst Walls. Once inside Heaven's Tower, speak to Kupipi. Kupipi will give you a Sword offering Key Item to give to the Yagudo as a peace tribute. Take the Magical Sword back to the Bastok Consulate in Port Windurst and speak with Gold Skull, a Galka, located in the 2nd room to your right. He will exchange the Sword offering for a Dull blade.

The offering to the Yagudo must be taken to the Treasure Room, which is located in the tunnels of Giddeus at (F-7). The Treasure Room is guarded by Uu Zhoumo, a Yagudo. Speak to Uu Zhoumo and he will tell you that you weapon is not a good enough offering, and that he'd rather have the blade used by Eyy Mon the Ironbreaker. Eyy Mon is a Notorious Monster that spawns at (G-7), not far from where you are. Eyy Mon will drop an Aspir Knife 100% of the time. Trade the knife to Eyy Mon to complete this part of the mission, then return to the Bsatok Consulate in Port Windurst and speak to Melek, who will send you to the Bastok Consulate in San d'Oria.

The Bastok Consulate is located at (K-10) of Northern San d'Oria. Speak to Helaku who will send you to speak with Halver in the Chateau d'Oraguille, which is seated north of the Bastok Consulate. Halver will tell you to head to the Yughott Grotto, deep within Ghelsba Outpost. Once inside the grotto, you must head to the Horlais Peak, where you will enter a Burning Circle fight against two monsters (see the The Emissary Spoilers page for more information).

Note: A full party of level 25 players is recommended if this is your first time doing this mission.

After defeating the monsters, return to Northern San d'Oria and speak to Helaku again. He will give you a Kindred report Key Item to take back to Bastok. Return to the Metalworks and speak to Naji again, who will reward you with 3000 gil and Rank 3.

  • Warcheif Wrecker - awarded after killing Warcheif Vatghit.
  • Black Dragon Slayer - awarded after killing the Windurstian monster.
  • Dread Dragon Slayer - awarded after killing the San d'Orian monster.

level 25
# Dec 15 2003 at 7:46 AM Rating: Decent
I have seen a few references to a max level of 25. What is that about? Can you do the mission if you are higher then 25?
RE: level 25
# Dec 28 2003 at 12:30 AM Rating: Default
when you fight the dragon, your level is capped at 25 (which makes the dragon an even match, since it's a lvl 25 NM).. this means if you're lvl 27 and go to fight the dragon, you'll be lowered to lvl 25 in the burning circle...

if you're lvl 24, you'll stay lvl 24

I didn't start the Mission yet but i got the palborough map and the burning circle is on it. Im from Bastok so shouldn't the circle should be on Giddeus map or Yughott map? Again i didnt start it yet so how can this be. Is the circle will appear on other map when i start it? cause it's not on my Giddeus map but on Palborough map.

Black Dragon helping rules

Ok the dragon in Windurst. Who can help out with this part? You need to be lower the 25 but what are the other rules? Do you have to be on this mission? Can you be from another nation? Basically what are all the rules helping?

No, he isn't. I have the same problem.

After doing Windurst, I went to San d'Oria, and got this part of the mission.

It says: Investigate Yugott Grotto.

But the only thing in that damn cave is bats, lizards, orcs and mining points, as well as a suspicious peek-hole (where those orc machine hide in) but nothing is in there.

I ran the length and width of that cave, tabbed through everything selectable, even gotten a few levels, so now it's all easy prey and toughs for 20, nothing in between...

The Windurst-first mission description above was made by someone who didn't do this version, so the Yugott Investigation isn't mentioned.
What to do...
# Dec 09 2003 at 4:33 PM Rating: Default
Okay, it's pretty simple. If you are from Bastok, and you did the Windurst one first. All you have left to do is kill the dragon is San d'Oria. To kill the dragon, you must find the burning circle.

If you did San d'Oria first. Same rule applies, you don't have to get the Yagudo's knife, you just have to kill the dragon in Windurst. Pretty simple eh ;).

Started this mission in Windhurst no problems there...Now am in SD and got the rest of the mission to find out who is the smart Orc. Went with a group and killed Vitgat, got nothing from it, and went back and they tell me the same thing and that I need to come back when i do it....Should I go kill him again or am I supposed to talk to someone? Did I have to get credit for the kill, because the rest in my group were not from Bastok. I am a Lvl 22 WAR/MNK.

Repeatable?
# Dec 08 2003 at 5:36 PM Rating: Default
What a blast this was! Me(21 whm) and 3 others took down the Giddius Dragon yesterday.
I was wondering if this mission is repeatable, because i'd like to be able to help my friends complete this mission. If it is, do I need to redo the whole quest? Or can I just walk right on in with them? Thanks in advance.

# Dec 06 2003 at 5:38 PM Rating: Default
I started this mission in Windurst. I got the good sword, traded it for the dull, then got the aspir dagger and gave it to the guy at the treasure chamber. I no longer have the key item and the guy at the treasure chamber doesn't want to talk to me anymore. If i go back to the consulate, Gold Skull tells me that I need to go back down there and give him the sword. What am I doing wrong? Should I just go back to Bastok? It seems weird that he doesn't say anything different, now that I've given away the sword.

The guy at the treasure room told you what weapon he wanted instead. Kill the NM in the dungeon that he told you to kill and give the dagger he drops to the "treasure guy"
Best way to find party

When I'm ready to take this on - is it easier to find a party in Windhurst or in Bastok to fight the dragon?
Clearification
# Dec 01 2003 at 10:05 AM Rating: Decent
War chief is he simple to kill? I was going to take some lower level friends to help them along in the mission I am a 24 rdm should I have any problems?

Dragon what are the parameters for people helping with this mission? Can people from other nations help? If they can what must they have completed to be able to help?

Thx

# Dec 03 2003 at 10:41 PM Rating: Default
The Warchief is very easy. He spawns on a little bunny slope on top of the mountain, close-to but not in the room with the throne-looking chair. He's level 16, and your biggest concern is bringing a band-aid for the paper cut he might give you.

I didn't go through any caves to get to him. It's just a matter of 'finding the path that goes up'.
Eh?
# Dec 01 2003 at 4:31 AM Rating: Default
I did the Windurst part first. I got the Yag the aspir dagger, I talked to the consulate, who said "The weapon is on its way to Bastok, it will serve Bastok well...blah blah". I walk back to Sandy and The Consulate there says I still have unfinished buisness with Melek and I can't proceed until I talk to Melek. I head back to Windurst and Malek tells me the same thing; "The weapon is on its way to Bastok, it will serve Bastok well...blah blah". I think i'm caught in the Twilight Zone... Any suggestions?

you have to talk to the Galka called Dark gold or gold skull or something like that. Hes in the room next to the desk in the consolate house. Hes the one that swaps the swords

I started mission in windurst so end of mission was to kill dragon in sandoria. I went with 5 people, only 3 could enter battlefield... All limited to level 25 (thief, warrior, redmage). It was very hard fight we just survived. After that kill I went to bastok consulate in sandoria... but how do i finish the whole mission in bastok? where must i go?

I like how when I get the mission the description says 'go visit the consulates in sandoria and windhurst' when it really means 'go talk to the president first.' It's always fun walking to Windhurst only to have to walk back to bastok and do it again.

I am doing the windhurst first, sand second, version of the quest with 3 others.

Our levels were, 23 whm, 23 war, 20 mnk, 22 war

You can find the cursed dragon if you climb all the way to the top of the orc hill in ft ghesba, and then go through the hut that is at the top. You'll be in the yughutt Grotto, just go through the NE exit and you'll find a room with the cursed seal. Just select it and it will ask if your ready. Everyone who is able to accept it will appear in a new zone after a cutscene and you can buff/rest before moving up to actually fight the dragon.

Cursed dragon was an easy fight for the first minute or so, having a large ammount of health but only dealing around 10-15 per hit to our level 23 warrior. However, once its HP reached about 1/10th it did a body slam for 250-300 to the entire group, I couldn't keep up with he heals before he did it again and whiped out our whole group.

We plan on trying again, but this time get our distance and use ranged once it gets low hp.
RE: Dragon
# Nov 24 2003 at 3:06 PM Rating: Default
We went a second time for the cursed dragon, this time the warrior gained a level and is 24, and we added a 21st level rdm.

This time no body slam, but the spotter did cast a powerful curse on both our warrior and our redmage dropping their max HP to 90 and 70. We barely won, but our warrior died in the process (he still got mission completed). Our cursed redmage was cursed the entire trip home and was only cured of it after he went into his moghouse.

So I suggest killing the spotter first.
RE: Dragon
# Nov 24 2003 at 9:20 AM Rating: Default
I've heard about the Body Slam. I've been told that the best thing to do is hold onto your TP when the dragon starts to get low & then go nuts before the Body Slam.

If your crew is in synch, you can possibly see if a skillchain will work.

That offensive move guarantees that a WHM is a necessity for this mission. BHM's that save a huge nuke prolly could help, too.
Dragon fight
# Nov 22 2003 at 11:24 PM Rating: Default
I went with a full party of 20+ and fought the dragon the other day. We ended up killing the thing with 3 members alive but the Searcher was still alive afterwards. We thought all you had to do was kill the dragon so we exited the area. Unfortunately we did not get credit for the Mission, although my title was changed to Black Dragon SLayer. Do you have to kill the Searcher too? Our WHM tried silencing him but failed and the thing just kept casting on us after the Drag was dead. Anyway, just wondering what we did wrong.
