Summary

Ratihb wants you to check on his son Wasuhd, who has gone in search of his older brother.

Walkthrough

The Corsair quest begins in Aht Urhgan Whitegate. In the Shararat Teahouse, speak with Ratihb (J-12) and then after his series of cutscenes, go and speak with city Guard named Mafwahb (L-9).

Take the boat to Nashmau located at Port Ephramad on the north side of Aht Urhgan Whitegate.

This is where it gets nasty if you don't take any precautions. For one, travel through the Caederva Mire during morning and afternoon because during daylight the Chigoes (basically tiny little insects) are the only things that seem to aggro. These mobs are unmarked until they aggro. At night, the undead come out but also the Lamia (snakepeople), which have truesight. In Nashmau, it may be wise to set your homepoint there as people seem to have a tendancy to die frequently on the way to the Reef.

To get to the Arrapago Reef, you can exit Nashmau through the northgate and wind your way up to the cave at I-6.

    • Edit:

You need a Lamia Fang Key to get to the ??? in Arrapago Reef.

Before zoning into Arrapago Reef get the Lamia Fang Key by carefully getting on the ledge at I-7 in Caederva Mire; you can walk right up above it and simply fall onto it. There are some Fetid Flesh-type creatures which need to be careful when walking around. Also, walking through the muck may result in Gravity-type effect on your character.

If you travel at night, there will be one Lamia mob and two skeletons by the Arrapago Reef zone. Inside the Reef, it is unadvisable to Escape, as Escape will plop you right into aggro right inside these mobs.

Inside the reef, just follow the right wall until you come out into the open where you will find your first wrecked vessel. On the first boat, there will be a ??? which is where you can obtain your key item puppet for the PUP job quest. Through the boat (which will have undead and Lamia aboard), you again follow the right wall and up the ramp to the first gate. This is where you use the Lamia Fang Key. Past the first gate, take first left and follow until you come to the next gate.

There, on another boat, you will find the ??? for COR. This series of cutscenes are rather long. The NPC in the cutscene there will ask you to go to Talcaa Cove.

Simply return to Nashmau, exit through the west gate into the Caedarva Mire again. This time, work your way up to (E-9) to get to Talcca Cove. You will have to weave through the ruins. Imps frequent the area so be very careful as they have Truesight.

Inside Talacca Cove, simple proceed along the left wall. On a pile of rocks, you will soon find the ???. There, you will get the key item "Forgotten Hexgun". There is nothing inside the Cove that will attacks so no worries about Sneak or Invisible.

Proceed west again, find the Rock Slab and get the final cutscene. It is wise to not have bought the Corsair Die from a vendor before this because you will have to throw it away and redo the cutscene again.

Corsair can be unlocked with lv1 jobs too.^^

I was really worried a lot bout this quest because I kept hearing about real high levels dying trying to complete this quest. I myself am only a lv30 THF Mithra. So, my friend and myself decided to set our Home Point in town and change to lv1 jobs and give it a go. We both made it using nothing but silent oils and prisim powders. Just go at night so the Chigoe do not spawn. You can get past everything else except the Imps with sneak/invis on.

It's not a bad way to try to get COR or PUP if you don't have them already. If you die, you can just release and try to run it again. It will only cost you some sneak oil and prisim powders.

Hope this may help someone out there. ^^b

From what I noticed when doing this quest is that you just have to be a very high level, at least 50 if you in a strong groop, if not, then maybe 70+. Also, while your at it, you might as well get the PUP job becuase you have to go to the same area. I can't say the distance the 2 "???" are from each other, no map.

I got the key but died after using it so I lost it. I go again to get it but it won't let me--anyone know why? Do I really have to go with a party? I went alone when I got it the first time (as 31 WHM/BLM lmao).
The easy way of getting there...

If a long walk past more than ten Truesight VT Heraldic Imps doesn't sound like a lot of fun, there's a shortcut to get to the spot in Arrapago Reef you need to get to. (I can't find the source of this idea in one of the PUP forum posts about this atm.)

Casting Escape in Arrapago Reef drops you at the entrance you need to go into for both BLU and PUP. Which has Lamias (sight aggro), and two skeletons (sound aggro) at night as mentioned in the OP.

So, use these directions instead:

Head out the west gate in Nashmau. Go west and then north to the entrance of Talacca Cove. Once inside Talacca Cove, head north across the rocks, and then northeast to zone into Arrapago Reef. Now, either wait until morning/afternoon, or buff up, equip all your high-VIT/Def gear, and cast Escape.

It'll drop you back in Caedarva Mire right near the entrance to Arrapago Reef you need to enter. Which is directly to your West, start running as soon as you can see the compass if it's nighttime.

At this point, you can proceed with the directions from the OP, "Inside the reef, just follow the right wall...", etc.

I did this yesterday, and it took a fraction of the time, and you only run across two EP Imps (to a 75 char) the whole way.

And just to be 100% clear about aggro from the mobs here:
Imps aggro sight, and see through Invisible. They can be bound and gravitied, but Sleep doesn't work without Elemental Seal.

Lamia aggro sight, Invisible works though. They can be bound and gravitied, but Sleep doesn't stick without Elemental Seal.

Skeletons aggro sound and low HP, Sneak prevents sound aggro, Deodorize does NOT prevent low HP aggro. Skeletons can be slept with Lullaby.

Chigoes aggro sight, and are Invisible before aggroing. Invisible works on them. They can be slept easily with Sleep and have approximately 1k HP. If you need to drop Invisible, I'd cast Phalanx and/or Stonesin if possible first.

I'm a 75BLM with 264 Enfeebling and HQ staves, so RDMs and BRDs (and better equipped BLMs) might have more luck with landing Enfeebles like Sleep. If you follow the above route you shouldn't have much difficulty with these mobs, however.

Lamia are not True Sight
# Apr 25 2006 at 9:41 AM Rating: Good
I can confirm that Lamia are *not* true sight. Walked up to the one by the Iron Gate in Arrapago Reef with Sneak/Invisible -- no aggro. Unless the ones in the mire aggro differently, they are *not* true sight.

Next test is whether Imps are true sight or scent aggro. Gonna walk up to one with Sneak/Invisible/Deodorize and see if I catch aggro or not. I've already deleveled, what's one more death? ^.^;

And confirmed. Sneak + Invisible + Deodorize does not prevent Imp aggro. Imps are indeed true sight, as originally thought.

And here I was thinking we'd found a use for that {Detects by sound} auto-translate... ^.^

I was under the impression that smell aggro is initiated by HP being in the yellow. As in "they smell blood" lol. Was i mis-informed??

Deodorize helping against blood aggro is a myth and does never ever work.

you were misinformed. :)

however, some monsters (like Tigers or Crawlers) track by scent. if you did not use any offensive actions on them (i.e. you got aggro or a link but didnt attack/cast/etc on it), then you can run away and use Deodorize when you are out of its range. Or simply run through water.

Just a note. If you get overzealous like I was, and buy COR dice in anticipation from the vendor in Nashuruuuulilululu, when you get the final CS before unlocking COR, it will not let you obtain the key item because of an Inventory error.

Once I figured out that I wasn't full and it must be the dice, I tossed the dice, but had to watch that long cutscene all over again.

Is there a way to re-obtain the die after getting it once? I don't plan to level cor anytime soon, but eventually I might. I have noticed people selling them on the AH, but right now they are overpriced considering you can get it for free.

The NPCs that sell all the other dice also sell the Corsair's Die. I don't recall the exact price, but I remember thinking it was very cheap. As far as I can tell, this would be the only way to re-obtain the die if you threw it away or sold it.

Ok... I dont know if it was because of who I was accompanied by or what... but we tried this quest with a party of 6 including a few lvl 75s, eventually we allianced with another party (75's)
I must say... More people is not better. More stops for sneaks and invis.. if you do go in a party bring items. Also I did not get to finish this.. another part due to a mass of people. More confusion and chances of getting lost. Go with people who know a general area where this is. And whoever posted this thankyou

Just a few notes relating to the map. When it says exit the north gate. Once you do and move along the path just a bit. You will come to a large pond. Head left, keep hugging that left wall and eventually you will come to a tunnel with leeches. ffxi-atlas.com/ is great. the only part that i didn't like about this map is for all other areas it has a listing of Numbers that reference exit/entrance but the town has three exit and they are not listed here. Granted they can be sorta given away if you study the map for a bit and notice that the north exit out of town puts you at (H-9), The East exit puts you at (H-10) and the West exit puts you at (F-10)

If for some reason you exit out the north gate and head right instead of left you will end up back in town. Technically you shouldn't be close to the pond/lake once you exit the north gate out of town. KEEP HUGGING THAT LEFT WALL and into your first tunnel and you will be fine. The second is all up to you. I went straight to the cave. Granted i could have gotten my key but on the guide itself it tells you to head to the cave and if your ingame and reading this bit by bit once you hit the cave then it says To get the Key, I would reverse the order and send them to the key first and explain that the cave is just north of the key. There is lots of ppl doing this quest.

The other benefit of hitting the cave fist is you can wait till morning.

idk if Lamia are true sight, I ran by a bunch with sneak+invis+deoderize and no aggro. Maybe I was just lucky ran by a few imps too (didn't know all this stuff was true sight at the time) No death here so far.
aggro

i went though it a few times and nothing happened with aggro except imp, but other people in my pt got blood aggro from the skele, so only imps have true sight i think maybe somother things deeper in

I do not think the Chigoe are smell because I was standing right next to one. I had sneak and Invisible on. I did not get aggro. The real problem is that you cannot target them until after they attack. I saw a few 75's get wiped out by these things. It was most likely the element of surprise.

If you're struggling with the Chigoes then just wait in the tunnel. As bad as this sounds, just wait for someone else to run past and aggro them. They'll usually all link and you can quickly seize the oppurtunity and run past.

I have attempted this quest only once, with 7 other people ranged lvls 50-70. They finished it (I had to log, unfortunately) but he had a hell of a hard time getting through Arrapago Reef- do the Lamea (sp?) really have true sight? We were under the impression they do, but it would be much easier if they didn't. Can someone shed some light on this?

Few notes of my own:

Use these maps: http://www.ffxi-atlas.com/

Use <pos> to figure out where you are

Use a RR item! Just be careful of RR around undead.

If you get aggro from an imp -try to zone. If you have no clue where the zone is, die far away from any mob and reraise.

To get into that door for the COR cutscene, only one person needs to open this door! Even if its someone not in your pt. It will remain open for about 30 secs. If someone is already behind the door they can open it free of charge (no key required from the other side). As a THF, it took me 4 living keys to open this door. As soon as you go in, follow the left trail.

After the graveyard, you are looking to zone into Talacca Cove - that is the name for the final zone for COR.

As a last note - as a THF / WHM, I was detected by a snakelady while not wearing sneak or invis. She Wateraga III'ed me, taking me to 300 life. As she was preparing another spell, I cast deodorize on myself and then used hide. I lost aggro from her! She slithered away (although 5 seconds later a skele blood aggroed >< so I fleed to zone). Moral of the story is I am not sure these are 100% truesight - if they are truesight at all.

1 or 2 extra things that were missed out, mob info.

Imps - have truesight, they can see through sneak and invisible

Chigoes - roumour has it they agro smell, please confirm this someone. Cuzz they agro when you have sneak and invisible on, and link badly too.

Well, my dumb *** is about to try this quest by myself (67RDM). I'm bound to make a mistake somewhere but I'll but the idiot that tests Deoderize =D But... I must say its probably going to fail seeing as Deoderize has always been basically just to "lose" aggro after you've run far enough away from the mob. If someone has a correction to that statement, lemme know, lol.
RE: Few Notes

they do not aggro smell, I ran by many with only sneak & invis on. they are SIGHT aggro

It is not just sight. They agro to sound, too as I found out omw to get the Automaton for PUP as a WAR/NIN. I had tonko activated and was separated from my Sneaker. Ran to that cave and got agroed by the Chigoe.
