ok, good way to build fame is "Gourmet" quest. And before you start swearing at people, maybe you guys should look a bit more at yourselves.... Warp IS a lvl 17 BLM spell... ALTHOUGH, you can get a scroll of instant warp (i use only) through the trade-in of conquest points at your local signet dude at gate.

Being from Windhurst (and hating Bastok - no offense :P) I did only 7 Bastok quests with no repeats and got slime oil quest. I only tried since another friend of mine had done the exact same thing. So I can tell you that SEVEN unique works quite well....

Fame is dependent on quests only. Missions you receive ONLY from your home country, from the gatehouse, while you can do quests in every city. 1 unique quest done = 1 fame. Repeats give fame, but I dont know how much - I have heard 1/2 a fame, but others have led me to believe its 1/3 a fame. Anyway, you check fame in every city at a tavern. There will be someone in them that will say your name, and tell you how famous you are.

Hope this helps, and please... don't resort to being rude guys....

Not true. I'm from Sandoria and was able to complete the "Mean Machine" quest after doing the "Mom, the adventurer" quest 20 times. No other quests were completed. If what you said is true, I would have only had 7-10 fame.
Repeatable

Is this quest repeatable?
ya
# Dec 25 2003 at 2:31 PM Rating: Default
fame isn't shown on the status screen and u will never probably know your exact fame it just exsists and can be estimated by how many quests you've done. :)
RE: ya
# Jan 07 2004 at 6:59 AM Rating: Default
Right Fame isnt shown but you can find out your fame from special NPC's in every Major city.
In this case it's the NPC outside the Tavern in Port Bastok, he will indicate your level of fame by how well the people of that nation know your name.
Max fame is "You are regarded as a Hero to this nation, I doubt there is anyone here who does not know your name."
I'm paraphrasing but it's very close to that.Enjoy.
Be nice!

I believe people may get the misconception that warp is a level one spell because they purchase the one from the guards that allows everyone to use it even tho its a one time deal.
For those that know, you really ought to help others to know and get a knew derogitory adjective to your vocabulary other than "moron".
For those that dont know, NOW ya do. :)

As a traveller from Windurst, I had to complete 16 quests before I could get this quest.
RE: number of quests

Also from Windurst, in my case I got it after doing 15 other quests while not getting it yet after 13 quests. Some quests presumably give more fame than others.
Best way to do the quest

A really useful post from Kulden about this quest was under the Black Mage forum, and I thought I'd post a link to it here.

Easier way?

What happens when someone without enough fame, tries to Trade the Slime Oil to the guy, before getting the quest?
RE: Easier way?
# Dec 05 2003 at 12:37 AM Rating: Default
if you try to trade him the slime oil without the required fame nothing will happen.

Do the quests Ecchi listed below and then you can get this quest. I did all he said except

The Wisdom of Elders

but had done
Groceries
A Foreman's Best Friend
Hearts of Mythril

Was he11, but warp is a really cool spell.
It is a BLM spell, it isnt the instant warp scroll. Thanks Ecchi!

Is it an instant one like you get for conquest points or just the BLM spell?
Get this quest..

OK... Let me just help you with this quest, cause apparently quite a few of you have a bit of a problem with this. To do this you'll need fame.. which you get from QUESTS.. not missions.. THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR RANK... You will need 11 (ELEVEN!!) quests done to get just enough fame.

These are the ones I do.. (Go back to all the quests and look for what you need.. If you make me explain it, I'll have to kill you for wasting my time and showing me you guys are really 'TARDS)

1. A Lady's Heart (You'll go to each district easier with this)
2. Siren's Tear
3. The Stamp Hunt (See.. told you that you'll need to go around faster..)
4. Beauty and the Galka
5. A Flash in the Pan (If you don't want to wait for night, then do "Minsweeper"
6. Mom, the Adventurer?
7. The Elvaan Goldsmith (BTW, Syn this, don't buy at AH, you'll just lose money..)
8. The Bare Bones
9. Smoke in the Mountain
10.The Wisdom of Elders
11.Gourmet (You don't HAVE to wait a certain time for this one...)

After this.. you should a lil bit of gil to buy the "Slime Oil" (AH: Others, Misc.)needed, plus, have a few things to put up for Auction. Now run, like you're trying to zone before that monster kills you (LOL), to the MetalWorks in the Cermet Refinery.. and you should be able to get the quest.. if not.. WTF you think.. DO MORE QUESTS! :P

Talk to Falco outside the pub in Bastok Port. He says something that varies depending on your fame level. For Fame 2, he says

<Name>? Hmm...sounds familiar. Who was it again? Oh. Well, uh...not many
people know who you are, but if you work hard enough, word will get around
about your good deeds.
quest for fame
# Nov 21 2003 at 2:46 PM Rating: Decent

My homeland is Windhurst, so I had to build up enough fame for this quest from scratch.

This is by far the best way to do it:

http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/quests.html?realm=Bastok&fquest=155

I had to repeat this other quest 19 times before I got to fame level 2. As soon as I finished my 19th run, Nbu Latteh started offering a different quest instead:

http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/quests.html?realm=Bastok&fquest=156

The 19 runs took me a grueling 3 hours... but once you do it, the Warp Spell quest can instantly be finished by buying Slime Oil from the Auction House.

In the meantime, I made about 2k gil, and built up almost 2 12x stacks of Fire Crystals. The 2nd quest you get from Nbu gives you the Linen Robe, which you can sell at AH in Windy for about 2.5k.

good luck... it was one of the most painful things I've done.
Not working
# Nov 19 2003 at 2:56 PM Rating: Default
Um... I'm level 18 BLM and Rank 2 (highest you can be without doing emissary quest).. he wouldn't do anything for me except tell me he liked his job. Why would they not let a level 18 BLM do the quest when the reward is a level 17 BLM spell?

You are probably not famous enough yet to be given this quest. If that is the case go about town and complete as many other quests as you can and try to get the quest again.
