it seems batwings give a lot more fame than rabbit hides, and you get 200gil back for every 2 wings..

just a little FYI.

After looking at the prices of the Warp and Drain scrolls at AH, I decided there was no way my poor WHM could afford these spells, so questing was in order. Found out about the quest here, and did as follows:

1. - Bought 9 stacks of bat wings from AH in Windhurst for 1500-1800 gil a stack
2. - Traded 5 stacks (2 wings at a time) of bat wings for the Fear of the Dark Quest
3. - Checked my fame by Namonutice at the tavern in Southern San d'Oria
4. - Found I was still only fame level 2 (Terfy...? Hmm... I might have heard that name before. Then again, maybe not. You are not famous yet. Keep your nose to the grindstone and work for the people. Soon, they will know you better!)
5. - Went back and traded 2 more stacks of bat wings to bring the total to 7 stacks, or 42 hand-ins
6. - Rechecked fame and found I had hit level 3 ( Ah, Terfy. That is a name I often hear. People speak well of you! Your deeds for the kingdom have earned you much honor.)
7. - Went to AH in Southern San d'Oria and bought Beastman's Blood vial for 3000 gil
8. - Went to Chateau d'Oraguille in Northern San d'Oria, made first right into open doorway guarded by Ferdechiond, turned left and ran to the end of the hall, then right, past the open dooraay guarded by Aladoverre, and followed the path down to Bostaunieux Oubliette
9. - Didn't have a map of Bostaunieux Oubliette, so I just walked south from the entrance until I came to an intersection where there was a right turn but no left. Took the right turn and further down ran into Novalmauge, triggered the cutscene where he asks for the blood, traded him the blood, and got the scroll
10. - Went back to AH in Southern San d'Oria and sold extra 2 stacks of bat wings for 2200 gil apiece

Total Original Spending: 14,600 gil
Total Money made back from quest: 8,400 gil
Total Cost: 6,200 gil
Total Time: about 1 hour
Reward: level 3 fame, ~20,000gil Drain Scroll

um sorry to say it but your WHm wont be able to use those spells anyways...those are BLM spells.. so you might want to level BLM first ;)

It's much easier to get the spells early and then sell them for spending gil to make leveling at low levels go easier, then go back and buy them once other jobs are ready for them. I just did the same with the Warp II scroll quest, even though my BLM is only currently lvl 29.

Ok many contradictions so here is my question

I have an Elvaan "Mule" (Not my main Character)in Sandoria prolly level fame 1 and rank 1

1)Can i enter the castle beeing a Sandorian to do the quest?

2)Do i need also the rank 2 in Sandoria?

3)If i just level my fame by doing the repeatable batquest will i be able to complete it?

Thanks

I just made an elvaan San d'Orian mule as well, and at level 1, rank 1, you cannot even get inside the Chauteau d'Oraguille, the guards yell that you have no business.

I checked my fame and it's level 3, so it's not that I'm not famous enough. I'm going to try doing the missions and seeing when I'll be allowed inside the Chauteau...

I'm pretty sure you have to be at least rank two. I've got near max (lvl 8) fame in Sandoria and I still can't get into the Chateau because I'm only rank 1.

You definitely have to be Rank 2 to be allowed into the Chateau to do the quest. Tried after each mission, but wound up having to level my mule to 10, beat all 3 NMs for Mission 1-3, and then deathwarped back to San d'Oria, collected rank 2 and can now stroll in the castle anytime I please

I went to talk to Novalmauge. He said i had no business in the area. I decided it was due to lack of fame. Went and bought 2 stacks of bat wings for approx 1.5k each on Diabolos server in sandy. Went and did the batwing quest 12 times. Checked my fame and he said "Ahh Xbc, ive heard of you, everyone speaks well of you" Went back down to Novalmauge and he gave me the quest. Bought the vial for another 1k. Brought it to him, and recieved the scroll.

Yes. I farm bats in Inner Horutoto Ruins in Windhurst. I usually get about 2 wings every 30 minutes. I run around till they all link on me, and cast the spell. Not a bad way to get wings for gil.

to get into here, you must be rank 2 in San D'oria or be on mission 2-3 after giving the letter to the consul if you are another nationality

RE: clearing up any confusion....
# Apr 23 2004 at 10:03 AM Rating: Excellent
Just to confirm what Nebudara said

I have my Taru BLM at level 16, and my WHM at 21, and am a citizen of Windurst.
I travelled to San D'oria to acquire the Drain scroll form my BLM. At the time I first went to San D'Oria I had completed the rank 2-2 mission, but had not started the rank 2-3 mission.

When I got there, I was unable to enter the Chateaux. I spent some time turning in bat wings to up my San D'orian fame. I got to the fame level where everyone in San D knew my name. (I think that's level 5 or 6 fame?)
Once again I attempted to enter the Chateaux, and was still not allowed to do so.

Ergo, fame cannot be the deciding factor on ENTERING the Chateaux if you are from another nation, though it probably influences wether Novalmauge will give you the quest.

Further evidence to this fact, I made the long Chocobo ride back to Windurst, and began the rank 2-3 mission. After talking with everyone I needed to in my home country, I travelled back to San D'oria. I spoke with the Windurst consulate there, who then directed me to speak with Halver in the Chataeux. This time, the gaurds did not stop me from entering the Chateaux when I approached, and I was able to find Noval while inside and collect my Drain scroll.

To sum up, if you are not a member of the Kingdom of San D'oria, fame has NOTHING to do with you being allowed into the Chateaux. You must be, at a minimum, to the point in your rank 2-3 quest where you have to speak to Halver.

As far as what is required for members of San D'oria goes, I can not speak. This is aimed more for those Taru's and Humes and what not from Bastok and Windurst, to help them avoid waisting too much time upping their fame beyond what is necessary. (ie: get into the Chateaux first before you start in on the batwings, so you don't turn in as many as I did before realizing it isn't going to help).

If you are San d'Orian you don't have to be on mission 2-3 to get into the castle. I have a San d'Orian character that was abe to get into the castle before mission 2-3.

No, you do not have to be on rank 2-3 if you are San d'Orian. I did this quest a long time back, and was able to do it without even starting my rank 2-1 mission. The only thing required, if you are San d'Orian is fame level 2.
Not high enough fame?
# Apr 09 2004 at 7:24 PM Rating: Decent
When i talked to Novalmauge he started talking about Dragons and Dragoons or whatever and told me to talk to some guy in the Cathedral. I imagine this is because My fame isn't high enough?

Actually, the number of quests done doesn't directly influence your fame, it's what quests you've done. Just doing 20 quests isn't necesarially going to get you enough fame.

(Edited)Really, to get inside the Chateau D'Oraguille, and you are not SanD'Orian, you need to be Rank 2-3, not 2 as stated before, in the Strategy Guide. Now, this is a big problem. Because, fame level is required, too. Probably level 3, or more.... I tried today, have done like 15-20 San D'oria quests, still, Novalmauge won't accept the Blood... Need to do more quests, I will try the 5 easiest I can find....

Quote:
You need high San D'Oria fame to do it. Windurst, Bastok and Sandy fame (not to mention Selbina, Jeuno, Mhaura and the rest of the cities) are all separate, although there are a few quests that will give fame to multiple nations/towns

Actually you aren't fully correct here. Selbina fame DOES connect to San D'oria and Bastokian fame.
The fame requirment for San D'oria wasn't that incredibly high as noted by the person from Windhurst that came to your town with no fame for San D'oria.

Using a number for fame is horrible, people of different races and nationalities will get different fame for doing the same quest. You get more fame for doing quests for your home nation, and the race for a nation gets more fame than the others (San d'Oria - Elvan, Bastok - Hume and Galka, Windurst - Tarutaru and Mithra)

You get your fame from checking a specific NPC in an area. They have different sayings depending on your current level. The specifics can be found here:

I am from Windurst, and did no quest in Sand'Oria.
With 0 fame, can't even do "the sweetest thing" quest.

The following is what I have done to get enough fame for "The Rumor" quest

Repeatable:
Fear of the Dark - about 5 stack bat wings

The Sweetest Thing - 20 honeys (require fame level 2)

Starting a Flame - 1 stack flints

The Merchant's Bidding - 2.5 stacks rabbit skins

The Seamstress - one time 3 sheep skins

Non-Repeatable:
Waters of the Cheval - 1 Cheval Water

Undying Flames - 2 bee wax (require fame level 2 at almost level 3)

I came Sand'Oria with fame level 1 - "Unfortunately, I have never heard of your name before"
And I was able to do "The Rumor" quest at level 3 - "I have heard of your name before"

Since I was there as blm30/thf15, there's no reason not to farm for items.

Bat Wings - dropped by any bats
I went "King Ranperre's Tomb" and go underground, I poison one bat and run thru the cave. (Mouse Bat link) In the end of tunnel, I cast Firega and all bats are down. (about 10-20 bats) I get lots of bat wings together with bat teeth. Isn't that nice :)

Honey - drop by insect type like bees
I came here with two stack of honey in my inventory, didn't farm it.

Flints - drop by worms
I killed a number of worms while waiting bats to re-spawn in "King Ranperre's Tomb" for it.

Rabbit Skin - drop by rabbit types
I did similar thing as I did for bat wings on this one. I cast poison on Wild Rabbit and Hare, (the poison most likely will kill wild rabbit) and run, cast poison on another when I spot one. My firega is hitting about 20 mobs for this. :)
And the result, plenty rabbit skin and meat ;)

Sheep Skin - drop by sheep
I poisoned some sheeps as I saw it when I was farming for rabbit hides. only get 3 skins coz it doesn't stack.. :(

Cheval Water - from river
I followed "Waters of the Cheval" quest faq for it

Bee Wax - craft: 3 bee hive chip & 1 distal water & fire crystal
I came here with a stack of bee hive chip, used 6 of them, brought fire crystal from AH, distal water from some NPC

I spend only 175gil on two fire crystal, and 10gil for empty bottle, 30 gil for two distal water, 1500 for beastman blood, and I got drain spell! :)

Time Spent = ~3 Hours
Gil Spent = 1910 Gil
Income while gaining fame = ~ 9000 gil
Total Cost = ~ -7090 gil

Total Payoff = ~ 26090 gil
(Drain Scroll was about 19000 gil to 22000 gil at AH on my server)

3 hour for about 26090 gil at level 30, I guest I am doing very well :)))))

(Note: The bat wings is really fast gil gainer)
You need Emissary mission.
