In-Game Text

  • Starting the Quest in Bastok:
Virnage: I am Virnage, a friar from the San d'Orian Cathedral. Coming to bastok is part of my pilgrimage. I was to return to San d'Oria after praying to the crag of Dem.... But I have seen something horrible here that demanded that I stay. The statue of the Goddess in the Metalworks--yes, it's placement is deplorable, to-its paint peeling off. I cannot believe that no one here noticed! That statues paint is specifically made to endure the rigors of time! It is supposed to last dozens of years. Ah, but there is hope. I once read an account of friars carrying off a batch of paint with them as they saught a place of safety during the Great War. They stayed in a citadel on the Sauromugue Champaign. This paint may be there still! I have heard people here say you are a great adventurer. Please help the Goddess in her hour of need.
  • After clicking the ???:
You retrieved a bucket of Divine Paint from beneath the rubble.
  • Return to Bastok and talk to Virnage: Ah! You've found the bucket of Divine Paint! May the Goddess bless your soul. I would like to repay you for your deeds, but I have nothing to give you at the moment. Here, I will give you this letter. Bring it to Eperdur in the San d'Orian Cathedral. I am sure he will give you a reward. May the gates of paradise open for you.

Description

Virnage in the Bastok Mines sends you to Garliage Citadel to search for a bucket of paint. On the first level of the Citadel, search for the ??? around G-8 or H-8. It is usually hidden near a large rock. Examine it to get the paint. Return the paint to Virnage, who then sends you to Eperdur in San d'Oria to get a scroll of Teleport-Dem.

I have just completed this quest, as a 32 WHM. I have to say, this is not at all a hard quest to do. Even without the walkthrough on this page!

I got the required fame through the Selbina Moss/Corn/Cabbage quest, and by trading Quadav Helms to the Bastok NPC who asks for them (didn't trade enough Moss, looks like...). Quest given, I warped back to Jeuno, Choco'd over to the Citadel, Sneak and Invis'd up, and wandered around the first floor for a few minutes. I found the room, nabbed the paint, ran back to Jeuno, did the legwork and got the scroll. Now, to Windurst, and the Tele-Mea quest!

I did this quest as a 36 whm / blm. I got the fame for this quest by trading 50 stacks of millioncorn to Melyon in Selbina. I got the millioncorn at the regional vendor in Bastok for about 46-50gil per corn.

After receiving this quest I warped to Jeuno, took a choco to Garlaige Citadel and I followed the very simplistic guide on this site and ran to the G-8 H-8 areas. Sure enough there was the ??? right next to a large rock as it said. There were 2 wingbats in the room so I had to wait till they moved clear of the ??? so I could uninvis without aggro (if they aggro'd by sight, I wasn't gonna take a chance). But yeah I got the paint, warped back to Jeuno, returned to Bastok, and then to Selbina to get my scroll and start holla.. which is another story -_-

This quest was by far the easiest for me to complete when I compare it to my experiences doing them all.

I didn't even need Sneak/Invis.

Level 43 SAM/THF Non-nerfed sub btw.

Just walked right in, followed that helpful Guide. Major RATE UP on the Guide by Jitsch Guru.

Had a stack of Oils/Powders for Sneak/Invis respectively. Used them, touched the point in the far room, which isn't far at all, but its further than the first. Had to turn off invis to touch it.

If you can pull stuff in Garlaige Citadel, you can probably do this quest.

The only thing I was wondering about this is from what level on can you solo this without needing the invisible/sneak stuff?
I'm a level 55 monk, can I solo this?
Not sure if all the critters there are too weak for me now or if there are still some tough critters on this floor.

I'd like to point out an error in the guide up top - it says you return the paint to the guy in bastok to recieve the scoll. You actually talk to him, then he sends you to the priest in sandoria, you get the scroll there.

Just a quick note, if you're using the "Millioncorn, La Theine Cabbage, Boyada Moss" fame build route, remember that whenever you do this quest it _LOWERS_ your fame in Norg. So if you're planning on being a Ninja, be careful about this quest.

that can't possibly be right. i checked my fame in norg, did a quest, and got up 1 level, did utsusemi, then headed off to trade 40 stacks of cabbage to the hick in selby, for titan fame. the next day i escorted someone to norg and checked my fame against his, so i could tell him what he'd have to see to know if he had enough. my fame hadn't budged.
RE: A note on fame.
# Aug 14 2005 at 5:37 PM Rating: Good
I personally don't know about the selbina / norg fame relationship, but this is what I heard...

norg fame is lowered by jeuno fame. since jeuno fame is made up of the 3 major citie's fame put together, it would seem, at least from this understanding, that if you level any cities fame up it'll eventually lower norg fame to the degree that it raises jeuno fame. It is possible that you could still have the same fame after raising your fame in selbina 1 level because it might not raise jeuno fame a whole level.

I haven't researched it myself, so my post has a lot of ifs ands and buts, but hopefully someone with experience on the matter may respond to this post to clarify.

Anyway, if you have no fame in Norg (Tenshodo Fame), you can still do the Selbina quest. I believe that you cannot have negative fame in this game.

All you need to raise Tenshodo fame is Gil - just trade tons of (zinc?) ores in Bastok and you're done!

What would the suggested repeatable quest besides the "Millioncorn, La Theine Cabbage, Boyada Moss" be? I'm planning on unlocking ninja soon, and I don't want to suffer the fate my LS buddy went through with yag necklaces.
Question regarding the paint
# Oct 12 2004 at 10:00 AM Rating: Default
So the area where I need to find the paint is the same level where I enter the citadel? When I read the walkthrough for this quest in my brady book it made it sound as if I need to drop down one of the holes. So if I am reading these posts correctly I just avoid dropping down the holes and go for the h/8 g/8 room areas?

I have written a guide to completing this quest which includes simple instructions on how to obtain the quest, how to check your fame level, and of course how to complete it. This guide includes maps as well.

Teleport-Dem.pdf

This, in my opinion, is the easiest of all of the teleport quests. Nothing to it really. Good luck to everyone with this quest and any other teleport quest you may still need to do.

I have been reading this thread and read that someone found the spawn point in a third room. I have never seen the spawn point in any other rooms then the two I listed in my guide. If anyone else has found this spawn in a different room please let me know. If there is actually a third spawn point I would like to add that information to my guide.

I can confirm this, too. The .pdf guide is truly excellent in every other respect, but could usefully be updated to reflect this third spawn point.

Directions may be helpful -- I died whilst looking for a way to get there, having targetted the ??? through the wall. Go straight ahead (instead of left) at the first "cross-roads", turn into the first room on the left and go through it into the one beyond. The spawn point is on the left of the entrance.

Finally, that room seems to be routinely inhabited by Fallen Evacuees, but they aggro to sound, so sneak can remain on whilst you target the ??? and receive the paint -- this point took me a long time to decipher from the confusing information elsewhere in this thread.

Hope that helps someone!

Well done, one edit you need to make though:

You state that skeletons aggro to sight and low HP, this is incorrect. They aggro to sound and low HP. The only thing in Garlaige that aggros sight on this level is beetles. The bombs in the lower tunnels also aggro sight.

Thanks for the guide.

Your fast, I just posted this guide! Thanks for pointing out the error, I guess I don't know my bats from my beetles and vice versa. What I meant to say was that beetles aggro sight, bats and skeletons aggro sound, skeletons also aggro low HP. I have already corrected this in the pdf document.

Once again I appreciate you pointing out the error so quickly! Thats worth a rate up.

RE: T_T God Damn Dem

I started with 0 Bastok fame. I now have the quest, finally. Here is what I did.
I set my hp at my mog in Bastok, cuz I have Warp as blm sub. After my trip to Selbina, I just warp back and buy at the AH again. Here goes:
1. Bought 1 stack of Boyada Moss (spelling)
This ran about 8-9 k per stack. You only get 600 gil back per (1) moss, so that's 7200 gil in return. If the price was above 8.5k a stack, I waited till it dropped again, as ppl love to drive the price of this up. After (2) stacks of moss, my fame was around 2.5 +/-
2. The price for another stack was driven up to 9.3k+ so I wasnt gonna lose 2k on the damn moss. Time for cabbages. I bought 20 stacks of cabbage in South Sandy, for roughly 45g a piece. Took me cabbages to Selbina and sold them to the same guy next to the sheep. I Warp back to basty, check my fame with Flaco in Port Bastok. I'm at fame level 3+. I check the AH, and the moss is still high. I don't feel like going back to sandy, so I decide to farm Bernie for some xtra cash.
3. I kill Bubbly Bernie 15 times, for a total of 7.5k gil free and clear. I check my fame with Flaco again, still at level 3 fame. Son of a. So, I do the Warp quest (I got a Warp scroll from an LS member for free, so I never did this) and my fame level is now: 3. WTF!
4. My fame must be sooo close to being 4, I'm not gonna mess with cabbages or corn or moss at this point. I go check with the NPC who gives the quest just to see if I get it, he's in Bastok Mines. I didnt get the quest. In the room right to his, there's a guy (forget name) who wants you to put some flowers at a grave for him, in North Bastok. I figure, I can only be 1 or 2 quests away. So I do it, and get the dang quest finally. w00t. Now, I just have to get the scroll.......

If you have checked both of the rooms where the paint is said to be, then someone had just beaten you to the location and got it before you. I'm not sure what the respawn time is. but I would guess that it is atleast 15 minutes, it may be much longer. Just run by again later and see if the ??? marker you are looking for is there.

Also, the correct two rooms are the northern most rooms in cell (H-8).

I'd almost swear I got this quest with level 3 fame. I was going around with really high windy fame and I'd just completed my 31st Sandy quest, but I had only done 10 quests in Bastok. I was going to Bastok to pick up some quests and I hit this one and got it. I had repeated the Gormet quest a few times (probably through 3 or 4 stacks of Treant Bulbs) and completed 9 other quests, but I doubt I could have had great fame when I got this.

EXPLOITING THE SUMMERFEST SOME MORE!

Well, I've been long on the lookout for more ways to exploit the Summerfest, and here's my newest:

You can do this quest by engaging in the Summerfest event and making it to Garlaige Citadel. Once there, simply use your infinite invisible/sneak (and I should hope your map) to make it very easily to the point, then get your paint bucket in the (G-8)/(H-8) area, and be done with it. You can even still complete the Summerfest event!

My condolences to those of you who stumble across this simple quest solution a tad too late to take advantage. :(

I have posts regarding this for several other quests, the Paladin Flag Quest "A Knight's Test", as well as a tough Davoi-related quest called "To Cure a Cough". Both of these are in Southern San d'Oria. Both are made CAKE easy by exploiting the nature of the Summerfest.

Enjoy the knowledge, should you choose to use it.

Just one thing about the quest itself: if you start walking around Garlaige, you will probably see a lot of "???" in dead-ends. These are not the ones you are looking for (people from my linkshell told me these are related to NM fights).

So, keep looking for a "???" that is inside a room; that's where I found mine.

When I did this quest I already had the necessary fame, and it was not difficult at all because I had a PLD62 with me in Garlaige. However, for those who need the fame, I will tell you exactly what I did to raise mine.

I am from Sandy, and there is a grocery in South Sandy that sells millioncorns for a very cheap price (as far as I remember, ~40 gil, the price varies with fame). There is a quest in Selbina called Only the Best that is *the* quest to increase your fame. The only reason for that is: in 2 trips to Selbina you will max out your fame in Sand'Oria, Bastok and Jeuno at the same time. Just follow my steps:

1) Go to South Sand'oria.

2) Free as much inventory space as possible; I recommend having 25 free spaces.

3) Buy the millioncorns (in my case, 25 stacks). You will need some thousands of gil to do that, something around 10k-15k. If you don't have that money, buy all millioncorns you can, but save some money for the chocobo.

4) Go to Selbina. If you have Warp (or a scroll of Instant Warp), set your homepoint in South Sandy before heading out (it will save you a lot of time). If you have a WHM friend who can teleport you to Holla or Dem, you will also save time going there, but it's not really necessary; just grab a choco and go.

5) Talk to Melyon (I-9) in Selbina to get the quest and start trading the millioncorns. You must trade 3 units each time, so each stack corresponds to 4 trades. Note that 25 x 4 = 100 trades (!!), that is, everytime you go to Selbina you repeat the quest 100 times.

6) Go back to Sandy. Now, if you are not a BLM, you will regret it, because Warp will save you the whole travel back (BLM is a job that makes us a lot lazy). If you don't have Warp, don´t have a BLM 40+ friend with Warp II, and neither have a scroll of Instant Warp, well, you will have to go by foot to Holla and take a choco there. This way, in step (2) you should consider keeping your weapon, for example, in case of getting aggro in dunes by a gob, bogy or something like that.

7) Repeat steps 3-6. Note that the quest pays you back 120 gil for each 3 millioncorns, that is, you get back almost all the money you spent before! So don't worry about spending more gil, you will have it ^^.

I did this thing only two times, which means 200 trades in the Selbina quest. That's why I strongly recommend having 25 free slots in your inventory, for a total of 100 quests per trip.

The total time spent doing this will depend on a lot of things. If you are like me and have Warp (or scrolls) and can get rid of your equipment to have 25 free slots, some 2 hours will do. If not, double this time.

The good news: this will raise your fame to level 9 in Bastok, Sandy and Jeuno. I have checked it myself, in all 3 cities the fame-check guy tells me something like "You are a legend in this city and all people love you". From this time on, you will be able to get all fame-related quests in these places. For example, if you are doing this for Teleport-Dem, you will also be able to get Teleport-Holla quest in Sandy.

I hope you enjoy your trips to Selbina as much as I have ^^. I'd like to thank Valen of my linkshell (the PLD who helped me in this quest and many others) for the idea of doing this quest to raise fame (lol, I did it but he didn´t)

WOW - I did this and I am a goddess in Jueno, Bastok and Sandy. You earn most of the gil back doing the trades and only takes about 2 hours to trade 50 stacks. Now I'm questing for fun instead of being a slave to fame. Thanks for the awesome tip - it really works.

Heres another tip that i know works for Sandoirans(not sure about other countrys tho) as long as Zulkiem is under control by your home country;

1. Buy your stacks of Millioncorn or your La 'Thein Cabbages.

2. Go to a Gate Guard and ask to do a supply run to the Zulkiem Outpost.

3. Hop on your chocobo and go to Selbina.

4. When you get there turn the Cabbages or Corn into the guy.

5. Set your home point in Selbina.

6. Then go and give the supplies to the guy at the outpost. You can then teleport to your home country from the outpost.(Granted your server is allowed to do this)

7. Talk to the guy at the Outpost that sells the potions and such, and ask him to teleport you back to your home country.

8. Buy more Corn or Cabbages.

9. Warp to Selbina, and turn in the corn or cabbages.

10. Repeat steps 7 through 10.

Note: This way will only work if your Server has unlocked the ability to teleport from Outposts to your Home Country

Hope this helped...
