In-Game Text

  • Starting the Quest in Bastok:
Virnage: I am Virnage, a friar from the San d'Orian Cathedral. Coming to bastok is part of my pilgrimage. I was to return to San d'Oria after praying to the crag of Dem.... But I have seen something horrible here that demanded that I stay. The statue of the Goddess in the Metalworks--yes, it's placement is deplorable, to-its paint peeling off. I cannot believe that no one here noticed! That statues paint is specifically made to endure the rigors of time! It is supposed to last dozens of years. Ah, but there is hope. I once read an account of friars carrying off a batch of paint with them as they saught a place of safety during the Great War. They stayed in a citadel on the Sauromugue Champaign. This paint may be there still! I have heard people here say you are a great adventurer. Please help the Goddess in her hour of need.
  • After clicking the ???:
You retrieved a bucket of Divine Paint from beneath the rubble.
  • Return to Bastok and talk to Virnage: Ah! You've found the bucket of Divine Paint! May the Goddess bless your soul. I would like to repay you for your deeds, but I have nothing to give you at the moment. Here, I will give you this letter. Bring it to Eperdur in the San d'Orian Cathedral. I am sure he will give you a reward. May the gates of paradise open for you.

Description

Virnage in the Bastok Mines sends you to Garliage Citadel to search for a bucket of paint. On the first level of the Citadel, search for the ??? around G-8 or H-8. It is usually hidden near a large rock. Examine it to get the paint. Return the paint to Virnage, who then sends you to Eperdur in San d'Oria to get a scroll of Teleport-Dem.

Let me start of by telling you that if you're going to be questing for the teleport scrolls... be prepared for death. Or beg some high level friends to go protect you. I know the maps for most of these zones are 3K a piece at Jeuno, but it's well worth it.

You'll be coming back here, after all.

A word of warning about Garlaige itself -- mind the holes. Holes = death. If you are unfortunate and fall down by mistake, warp out of there or prepare for a swift beating. I've "seen" a level 33 MNK Elvaan with 700 HP get slaughtered in 3 hits. Baaaaaaad places.

The first time my friend and I tried this mission we ended up both dying when Sneak/Invis ran out and all sorts of fun things aggro'd. There are bombs and pot-family mobs near enough as well, and they're much more unfriendly than the bats and beetles. For those that don't know, undead aggro when your HP is less than 75%; in other words, in the yellow. They will see you through sneak/inivisble. It'd suck to figure that out by getting killed.

Okay, onto the actual quest.

The best directions, and the ones that ended up leading my friend and I where we needed to go were the ones posted by Jyneefur. To repeat -- throw up sneak/invisible when you get to the bottom of the stairs (unless there's a mob train). Make the first left, the first right, and another left. Mind the holes again, I wasn't prepared for them and almost fell down one. The first left you make will be a very precarious path.

For those of you doing this quest in pairs, or randomly doing the quest when another WHM is doing the quest, be prepared for the ??? to move. It doesn't go far; it simply swaps rooms. If you see the ??? but it's out of range, you have to essentially go to the other side. I can't think of concise way to explain it, but if it happens to you, you'll know what I mean.

[_ rm2 _][_ rm1 _]

RM1 is the room that the directions lead you to, RM2 is the room that's directly "behind it". You'll have to go around a wall to get to RM2 from RM1, but it's really not that far.

It's worth the CP to buy a scroll of warp, or just warp out of there with the spell. Not as absolutely necessary as Gusgen, but the sooner you get out of there the better.

ALSO! Yet another clarification!

When you go back to Bastok to talk to the starter NPC Virnage, he will tell you that he DOESN'T HAVE ANYTHING FOR YOU. He gives you a Key Item, "Letter to Eperdur" and you must return to San d'Oria and go to the Cathedral in N. Sandy to get the scroll.

I'd also like to confirm Vanex's cabbage fame building guide. It took me roughly the same amount of cabbages to get the required fame (I could hold more stacks, having done Gobbiebag I, that helped a bit). This is a very time consuming thing as simple as it sounds, so be prepared to spend all day and a good chunk of gil raising your fame in this manner.

I hope this helps someone else in the future ^^ I'm just so happy I got it over with.

...now to do Mea. Ugh.

ugh...went left right left.....empty room with bats....other directions say to go straight at first opportunity to turn.....which is correct?

I'll summarize the steps within Garlaige Citidel:

  • You enter Garlaige and proceed down the steps.
  • At the first intersection, turn left. You'll have to negotiate a rather perilous set of holes in the floor. Take your time, it's not hard.
  • At the next intersection, turn right. This is only a three way intersection.
  • The next intersection isn't so much an intersection, but two rooms across the hall, in which you are walking, from each other. The room on the left is supposedly one of the two rooms in which the paint may be found.
  • If you don't find it in that room, go back out, turn right, and follow the right wall. You'll be going back the way you came until you reach what was the 2nd intersection.
  • Eventually, as you follow the right hand wall, you'll come to another pair of rooms across from each other, similar to the first. The room on the right, here, is the room where I found my pain.

  • Here's my stab at a quick map:
    [link=homepage.mac.com/bena/.Pictures/ffxi/garlaige_tele_dem_quest.gif]garlaige_tele_dem_quest.gif[/link]

Good luck to all! The hardest part of this quest is getting the fame for the non-Bastokans!

    Peace

I want to stress that this posted map, while of the right area, does not have ALL the spawn points on it. Like someone else has previously posted, I found my ??? in the 3rd room from the left in the top row of 6; the map/post I'm replying to only has rooms 4 and 5 marked.

Now here's the catch: when I went in, I had to search the entire set of 12 cubes and I DID NOT FIND THE ??? after 45 minutes. In particular I was in the three rooms just mentioned 3-4 times. I gave up from the stress (there are bombs and magic pots and jellies in some of those rooms in the second row!!!) and left, and came back later with a buddy. We took another 5 minutes to find the ??? So, I don't know whether someone got it while I was looking and it moved or if there's a re-spawn time or what, but be prepared for this quest to not be a 30 second cakewalk.

I had absolutely no fame when I started this:

I traded 87 stacks of La Theine Cabbage to Melyon in the "Only the Best" quest.
This took me from level 1 fame ("[Name]? What is that, some kind of snail? Oh, that's your name. You must be a rookie adventurer, right?") in Bastok.
I had probably done about 5 quests total when I started trading.
    So I guess that's about 208 quests in Selbina I just did…
This took me up to level 4 fame ("Hello there, [Name]. Quite a few people are talking about the things you've done for Bastok. People are starting to talk about you. Keep on doing whatever you're doing!") and I have received the quest.

That's three trips to Selbina with 29 stacks of cabbage. I kept my pearl on so I had someone to talk to ;)

I was getting the cabbage for about 24 gil each, so I lost only about 7656 gil on the cabbage. Plus three Chocobos for about 90 gil each. I don’t have Warp yet so I was forced to buy scrolls of Instant Warp for 750 CP’s each.

Just thought people that have no fame might want to know how long it's going to take :)
Sorry I wrote this fast, I hope it all makes sense.

I did the same thing, kinda.

I had lvl 4 fame in Bastok, so I bought 25 stacks of million corn, and traded away.

Spent 43g on each millioncorn. so it was about 12.9k gil for 25 stacks, and you basically make your money back for every 3 you trade him, 120gil, that's 40 gil a piece, not too bad.

I got dem quest, and I'm doing it right now, just resting in rolanberry at the moment.

Anyway, good luck to everyone who tries this quest.

I had done about 15 unique quests in both Selbina and Bastok, and repeated the zinc ore Tenshodo quest about 15 times or so. I could not get the quest until I did the zeruhn soot quest in Mines about 10 times (leveling my warrior from level 1 - 7 in Zeruhn Mines gave me plenty of these), the boyhada moss quest in selbina about 15 times, and the silver name tag quest in Mines about 20 times. (I'm too lazy to actually go to Palborough to kill Quadavs for the name tags, but if you buy from AH in SanDoria or Windurst, you're looking at paying 200-400 per name tag. The quest reward is 550. I made quite a few hundred on this quest.) Then silly Virnage finally gave me the Teleport-Dem quest.

As for the quest itself... after following the entrance of the Citadel as it curves and goes down steps, make sure you start casting Sneak (for Citadel bats and undead) and Invisible (for beetles). I can't count the number of times I've seen beetle and bat trains at the zone. After entering, I made the first left, the first right, and the first left into a room. That is where I found my ???.

    How I get the fame

I trade 50 stack of cabbage to selbina quest - Only The Best, and I got this quest. About 3 hours running around.

My bastok fame was at level 2 (warp scroll quest fame level)
And afterward my bastok fame was at level 4 (teleport scroll quest fame level)

    Cost Of Fame
cabbage cost 22 gil in south sandoria, Raimbroy's Grocery.
    cabbage cost: 12 * 50 * 22 = 13200 gil
    quest income: (12 * 50 / 5) * 100 = 12000 gil
    cost of fame: 13200 - 12000 = 1200 gil

1200 gil for two level fame in bastok and two level fame in sandoria (perheps selbina 2 level fame as well), I think it is quite cheap :) 3 hour for two level fame, I don't think I can get fame that fast with unique quests.

after buying 50 stack cabbege from Raimbroy's Grocery, the cabbege was grayed out and price dropped to 21 gil.... maybe I brought out all stock!? lol

The price dropped because Selbina fame increases both Sandoria and Bastok fame and vice versa.

The reason the price had dropped for you is that your fame went up. As your fame increases in a city, store vendors and regional vendors (but not guild shops) drop their prices. This only affects the city you raised your fame in. The reason it was grayed out is probably because you had some in your inventory.

but it should not gray out since my inventory had no cabbage when I check it

I think it's like arrow wood, which gray out almost all the time for it's short stock

It seems as if the location of the ??? is random. I think it is always in one of the rooms on the floor. I had to go to the 3rd hallway from your right into the room on the right.

Also, a cheap lesser mentioned way for fame towards San d'Oria and Bastok is repeating the La Theine Cabbage quest in Selbina.

Cabbages are quite cheap. 24 gil a pop at Rambrioy's (sp?) Grocery in Southern San d'Oria. Just mog your equipment, and take a ton of stacks with you. =)

if you do the boyahda moss quest in selbina quest enough times you will recieve this quest. you need to give him 15 stacks total for level 6-7 fame. depending on your server you can make anywhere from 200gil or a loss of about 100-800 per stack thrown in. this also levels sandoria, rabao, selbina and bastok fame at once. so go go go.

about 25 stacks will get you Hero Fame. Also after your return for trading them the total cost for Hero Fame is approx. 6k-10k because you get about 80 cents on the dollar return for it. So personally thats not a bad price tag for Hero Fame in those cities. So when you think fame, think Boyhada Moss.
It may take some cash on hand but you get about 80% of it back so no worries.

This is extremely easy with sneak and invisible.
walk straight all the way until you hit the wall and turn left into the room.

tab until u see ??? which is under a rock slab.
cast cure to yourself to remove invisible, inspect and Key item obtained.

You don't have to cast cure to remove Invisible. Hit + on the numpad a couple times until it targets status effects, move to Invisible and Hit enter. You can get rid of most positive status effects this way.

People say how many they have done but that number can vary. Your fame rises faster if you belong to that country and if you are the right race for that country.

Personally I'm Bastokian, but I'm Elvaan (wrong race for Bastok) so my fame will rise faster than an Elvaan from Sandoria, but slower than a Galka/Human from Bastok.

For the record I got the quest and I have 35 unique and about 30 repeats - I know I didn't need that many repeats (I probably needed 10), I just did bubbly bernie for the gil

My recommendation is for you to do this at 34 with a BLM sub.

This way you will have both Sneak/Invisible and Warp to get you back to town when you've checked the ????.

White Mage 36 + teleport + Black Mage 18 with Warp is better than airships. :)

it is possible at level 33 if you can use sneak+invisble as the mobs in there will eat you for lunch if your alone.

I partied in there up to level 38 and it was still slighty difficult for a full PT if thats any gauge of difficulty.

However here is some info about the area:

    Aggro mobs:
Citadel Bats (Pray to god you don't **** one of these off they have eaten level 40s for appetizers)
    Beetles
The Fallen Evacuee (I think thats the name)
A ghost type monster (i cannot remember its name, sorry =( )

Although all of the above seem to aggro by sound sneak+invis should both be used.

    What items to bring:
A scroll of instant warp in case you fall down one of the holes.

Hopefully my huge blurb of info can help you out, and good luck with the quest.
