Summary

Help nurse the chocobo back to health. It seems to have suffered both mentally and physically. Gausebit wildgrass may do the trick.

Walkthrough

The first time you talk to Brutus, he will give you the quest "Chocobo on the Loose!" After watching the cutscene, talk to him again to get the quest "Chocobo's Wounds."

You absolutely MUST be at least level 20 to do this quest. Anyone who tells you otherwise is mistaken. Brutus will not give you the quest if your current job level is lower than 20.

After talking to Brutus (or before, whatever), you need to get four clumps of Gausebit Wildgrass. You will try and feed the sick chocobo the grass. You can get the grass by killing Wadi Hares in Dangruf Wadi, or Crane Flies in Meriphataud Mountains. You can also buy Gausebit Wildgrass off of the Auction House. It is listed under Weapons -> Ammo & Misc -> Pet Items. (Yes, Chocobo food is listed under the Weapons category. -_-)

Many players often get confused and think that you're supposed to feed the chocobo Gysahl Greens instead of Gausebit Wildgrass. This is wrong. Gysahl Greens will not work. You have to feed the chocobo Gausebit Wildgrass.

The quest can take up to six real world hours to complete. You must feed (or attempt to feed) one clump of Gausebit Wildgrass to the Chocobo every game day (one game day is equal to about one hour in real life). If you feed one clump at the end of a game day, you do not have to wait a full hour to feed the next clump. You only need to wait until the next game day. However, if you feed a clump at the beginning of a game day, then you WILL have to wait a full hour, since you will have to wait for the next game day before you can attempt to feed the Chocobo the next clump of grass.

In total, you must attempt to feed the Chocobo six times. However, you will only need four clumps of grass because the Chocobo will refuse your first two attempts.

Day 1 - The Chocobo rejects the food and refuses to eat.

Day 2 - The Chocobo rejects again (1 real hour later).

Day 3 - The Chocobo will accept this time (1 real hour later).

Day 4 - The Chocobo eats again (1 real hour later).

Day 5 - The Chocobo will eat again (1 real hour later).

Day 6 - The Chocobo will eat for the final time and you will get the license.

You do not have to be logged in every hour to do this quest, and they do not have to be consecutive hours, either. In other words, you can feed the chocobo once, then log off for several hours, then come back and feed the next clump of grass. Also, you cannot go up and continuously try to feed all four clumps of grass to the chocobo at once. You must wait at least one real-life hour (or until the next game day) between each feeding attempt.

The price of a Chocobo ride

I was wondering if anyone could shed any light on this subject for me. Can someone tell me what is the driving force behind the prices to rent these birds. I've heard some say it is a percentage of your total gil, but from my short expierence I found that hardly to be entirly true. Dose anyone know what factors determine the price?

The cost for rental is dictated by the actual number of chocoba that were previously rented that day - this information is listed somewhere on the official web pages because that is where I read it.
Logging Out And This Quest
# Jun 07 2004 at 5:01 PM Rating: Good
I can confirm that you do not have to stay logged in to do this quest.

I started this quest on my lunch break, RAN MY BUTT OFF to get some of the grass and back to the stables cause it was 22:00ish. Gave the chocobo the greens, he gave it back. Waited til it turned 0:00, handed greens, gave it back (with a slightly different message).

I then logged out to go back to work. Came back after work and handed it to him the third time, he took it this time with a cut scene. I have yet to finish the quest (am currently waiting for the next day), but it obviously progressed even after I logged off.

Try talking to the chocobo, then try talking to the kid. If all else fails then just try feeding the chocobo yourself.

If nothing else works then I guess no chocobo for you.

The quest is easy... I did it as follows...

Day 1 :
Feed chocobo at 23:00 hours or so.
Day 2 :
Feed chocobo at 00:--.
Go level in Quefim
Day 3 :
Continue to level in Quefim.
Head back to town ~20:00.
Feed chocobo at 23:00 hours or so.
Day 4 :
Feed chocobo at 00:--.
Head back to level in Quefim.
Day 5 :
Continue to level in Quefim.
Head back to town ~20:00.
Feed chocobo at 23:00 hours or so.
Day 6 :
You're done!

Doing it this way I got to level during the time... and only had to run to town twice. If you don't feel like doing it this way.... you can always feed, go AFK, feed, go AFK... etc. It doesn't have to be consecutive games days, you can feed the chocobo a year later game time and it will still take it.
Chocobo 6 hours?
# May 17 2004 at 11:59 AM Rating: Decent
Does it mean that you have to be logged in 6 hours in a row. Can I do like 3 hours one real day then do the next 3 hours the next real day and it will still go in order? Thanks!

I did this quest in one day but I read in one of the threads that you can do it even if you log off and resume on a later day.

Im surprised no one answered this question..

Can you complete half of the quest and log out for a couple of days? Or do you need to do it day after day consecutively?

Thanks...

No, you do not have to be logged on the entire time, you can start it, log off for a week (real time)
log back on and continue the quest.

Thas a lie... U can be lower than 20, although not much.. but as long as you have a liscense, you can ride it lower than 20. ALl the NPC will say is You won't be able to ride as long because of your level. AND You can only rent a chocobo from town... non of the teleports
RE: choco
# May 07 2004 at 7:50 AM Rating: Good
Ok lets clear this out.
You need to be 20 to obtain the chocobo license, but if you change job you can ride a chocobo at level 15 if you ALREADY have a chocobo license.

The level 20 listed here is the level requirement for performing the quest.
In a patch that was released a few months ago, they added the ability for people at level 15 to ride chocobos, with the restriction that the riding time is lowered and you can only rent the chocobo from the 3 main towns.
But, you must still be at least level 20 to activate/finish this quest and get your license.

if your high enough to do quest your high enough to get the grass.if you lazy people would actually kill mobs and get items for quest and quit buying them from AH. prices will actually DROP.why do you think prices are so frigging high??look at items anything that deals with a quest goes for 2x the price of items of same level.

# May 15 2004 at 11:50 AM Rating: Decent
If I can farm for an hour and get 3K of loot, why would I bother spending more time and dying to get 3K worth of quest items? They sell for 800g each on my server and I can earn the cash way faster than I can get the drops. Work smarter not harder...

Went to Jeuno my first time as lvl 15 WHM (small misunderstanding about what lvl to ride Choco). The way I always go is canyon, mountains, champaign. Champaign is the hardest are because there are Mobs EVERYWHERE. BE Careful. I know that going as lvl 1 means no EXP loss but it could take hours to get to jeuno that way. Good Luck to all though and dont listen to what ppl say I made it all the way to Jueno at lvl 15 with no maps of the mountains or champaign YOU CAN DO IT!

It's a sucky quest just because it takes a long time? Man i'd hate to hear what you have to say about mission's that require time!

I made the run today from Valkrum --> Konschtat Highlands --> Pashlow Marshlands --> Rollanberry Fields --> Jueno as a level 19war/9whm w/out a map. My guide died and I just kept running. Wasn't to hard, just had to tread lightly.

Quickest way to do the choco quest is to just buy the grass at the AH, currently at Jueno (Unicorn Server) the grass is going for around 1k gil. And as someone stated, quickest way to knock out two hours is to start the quest right before midnight and wait the minute or two and get the second hour done.

Go out, do some PTing, level, come back and take care of the quest some more.
why the hate?

What a sucky quest. I spent an hour or so just to get to Jeuno only to wait another 6 hours to get my chocobo. That's fine an all, you have to do what you have to do, but as a THF, you can imagine my surprise as I watched the storyline. "We don't house Theives" "Get out of here you Theif," and so on and so forth. Well, as soon as I heard that I popped myself on /anon so that little kid wouldn't take the chocobo away from me! ;) Come on now, don't us Theives get any love?
RE: why the hate?
# Oct 17 2004 at 4:14 AM Rating: Default
first off all, you don't need to stay on for the entire 6 hours, nor do the 6 game days have to be consecutive, but it won't let you attempt to feed the chocobo more than once in a game day, and for the record, 6 hours is nothing compared to most missions.
Besides, the the time it takes to get a chocobo liscence is well worth it, i mean, its a freaking CHOCOBO..

Now... off to petition to make moogles a playable race...

I treid taking the trip to Jeuno (la Theine > Jugner Forest > Batallia Downs > Jeuno) solo as lvl 20thf/10war and got aggroed and died in batallia downs. I decided to take the advice and switch to a lvl 1 (RDM, I believe). I made it there with no problem at all. I even spent a few hours fishing in Batallia Downs to pass the time and the only aggro i got was from the mobs i fished up. It almost seems as if the mobs check us the same way we check them. If we're too weak to be worthwile, then they just leave us alone. I wouldn't stake my life on it, though.
Running from the mob to Jeuno
# Apr 21 2004 at 3:57 AM Rating: Decent
Well I tried to go to Jeuno at level 19rdm/9whm through Jugner Forest. I just about made it. I aggroed a Gob while healing and a highlevel thief saved me. I quickly gave them a thanks and ran. Low and behold a damn Jungle Tiger aggroed and killed me. So I decided to go through Mhuara. I caught the boat in Selbina. I ran into a level 20 redmage trying to make it. We quickly made a party of 5. I believe it was 2 rdm, thief, 2 war. I asked my LS if I could make it with the party. They just ltao at me. They said the raptors aggroed a screen away. I then did search of area and a high level Pld was there, I believe around level 46-48. He was polite enough to give escort to Jeuno. We targeted and did /follow and took off. We made with all but one. Mobs aggroed bad. Pld could kill anything, just we couldnt keep everyone alive when aggroed. We only fought the mob twice. So I believe anyone can be lucky and make it...But it is good to get an escort.

I have just chrono'ed the real-time to Van'Diel time realtion!

1 Vana'Diel hour = 143 RL seconds = 2minutes and 23 seconds RL

1 Vana'Diel day = 2324 RL seconds = 57 RL minutes and 12 minutes, approximately........

1 Vana'Diel week = 457.6 RL minutes or 7 RL hours and 41 minutes, approximately.....

These approximations are not exact because, as you know, the more variables we introduce into an equation, the more possibility for errors increases. (Let's not get into mathematics right now, I am a Real-Life chemist, I should know.)

Oh, I wish there was Alchemist available as a new job!
Trip to Jeuno

I made the trip from Bastok to Jeuno by foot as a L16 Monk (no subjob).

Took off from South Gustaberg to North Gustaberg by way of the Fumaroles (outside Dangruf Wadi). Entered Konschat Highlands to Pashhow Marshlands to Rolanberry Fields right into Jeuno.

Boy did I ever feel out of place seeing every PC there L36 and over.

Not knowing my way around Jeuno, I ended up in the tunnel that leads to Qufin Island and just stood watching all the mobs. Fortunate for me a Tarutaru approached me to ask why I was there and offered to teleport me back to Crag of Dem. Luck for me I guess, but it was a nice journey. Interesting scenery and lots of fascinating creatures dotted the byways.

Fortunate still that I aggroed nothing as I ran without stop except to get my berings, and when I did encounter Q's and Gobs I just hugged the walls/cliffs of the surrounding area.

It was fun. Whoohoo! I plan on doing it again, only for a personal quest to collect all the Crag keys and on foot ... forget the boat, no scenery that way.

Wish me luck!

This might be a pretty obvious tip, but you can cut an hour off the time it takes to do this by starting it just before midnight (Vanadiel time). Get the first 2 done in a matter of seconds.
Dont take the marsh route
# Apr 08 2004 at 3:04 PM Rating: Decent
I made it as a lvl 20rdm/10blm but only cause of good old bind. The marsh/fields path is covered with mobs that went from tough (stuff in the marshes) to everything being Incredably Tough (Rolanberry fields) and most things tend to aggro. If you keep your eyes open though you shouldnt have to much of a problem getting to juno.
Easy..

I made the run as a 20 WHM/7 BLM with absolutely no troubles, even without sneak and deodorize. I went from Valkurum Dunes --> La Thiene --> Jugner Forest --> Battalia Downs --> Jueno

Runs through the dunes and la thiene were a piece of cake, and much of jugner was easy/decent challenge mobs. The only things you need to be careful of are tigers, gobs, orcs, and the occasional walking tree [You cant miss this guy if you see him], but all of that can be avoided if you stick to the path.

Battalia downs is a bit more dangerous, but mobs are widely spaced so it shouldnt be too much of a trouble to avoid them. Once again, just avoid the goblins and sabertooths.

The timer isn't exactly how you think it should be, if you look at the Vana'diel clock, a minute on there is about 2.5 seconds to us. 1day in vana'diel is just under an hour for us (58.4 minutes)
