Summary

Help nurse the chocobo back to health. It seems to have suffered both mentally and physically. Gausebit wildgrass may do the trick.

Walkthrough

The first time you talk to Brutus, he will give you the quest "Chocobo on the Loose!" After watching the cutscene, talk to him again to get the quest "Chocobo's Wounds."

You absolutely MUST be at least level 20 to do this quest. Anyone who tells you otherwise is mistaken. Brutus will not give you the quest if your current job level is lower than 20.

After talking to Brutus (or before, whatever), you need to get four clumps of Gausebit Wildgrass. You will try and feed the sick chocobo the grass. You can get the grass by killing Wadi Hares in Dangruf Wadi, or Crane Flies in Meriphataud Mountains. You can also buy Gausebit Wildgrass off of the Auction House. It is listed under Weapons -> Ammo & Misc -> Pet Items. (Yes, Chocobo food is listed under the Weapons category. -_-)

Many players often get confused and think that you're supposed to feed the chocobo Gysahl Greens instead of Gausebit Wildgrass. This is wrong. Gysahl Greens will not work. You have to feed the chocobo Gausebit Wildgrass.

The quest can take up to six real world hours to complete. You must feed (or attempt to feed) one clump of Gausebit Wildgrass to the Chocobo every game day (one game day is equal to about one hour in real life). If you feed one clump at the end of a game day, you do not have to wait a full hour to feed the next clump. You only need to wait until the next game day. However, if you feed a clump at the beginning of a game day, then you WILL have to wait a full hour, since you will have to wait for the next game day before you can attempt to feed the Chocobo the next clump of grass.

In total, you must attempt to feed the Chocobo six times. However, you will only need four clumps of grass because the Chocobo will refuse your first two attempts.

Day 1 - The Chocobo rejects the food and refuses to eat.

Day 2 - The Chocobo rejects again (1 real hour later).

Day 3 - The Chocobo will accept this time (1 real hour later).

Day 4 - The Chocobo eats again (1 real hour later).

Day 5 - The Chocobo will eat again (1 real hour later).

Day 6 - The Chocobo will eat for the final time and you will get the license.

You do not have to be logged in every hour to do this quest, and they do not have to be consecutive hours, either. In other words, you can feed the chocobo once, then log off for several hours, then come back and feed the next clump of grass. Also, you cannot go up and continuously try to feed all four clumps of grass to the chocobo at once. You must wait at least one real-life hour (or until the next game day) between each feeding attempt.

I started the first part of feeding the Chocobo last night then I had to turn the game off for the night. I have five step left to do but this will now have to be accomplished over the course of the weekend. Because of the delay in the second step will this effect the quest? I did note down the day I started it which was waterday so will I just need to wait till the consecutive next day to carry on with the feeding?
Confusion

When I first spoke to Brutus, he gave me the Chocobo on the Loose quest. I zoned out and went back to try for the Chocobo Wounds quest, but it didn't work. So then I spoke to the Galka Silver Tail, and when I went back to Brutus he finally gave me the quest.

I guess you have to try all sorts of things before he finally gives it up.

See posts by Thypointblank, Germanone, and Turnerman for how to be sure of getting the Chocobo's Wounds quest, and ZackKnightblade's post and the Chocobo Egg quest listing for how to complete that quest. Neither quest conflicts with the other, i.e. if you start either one, it does not prevent you starting the other. Neither is a pre-requisite of the other, i.e. either can be completed before the other. Disclaimer/ Credit: All this I got from looking at this section, so you don't have to. All the people who I got the info from can take credit for posting it; I don't get to. They take the blame if the info is wrong, so I don't have to.

I just wanted to clarify for everyone...

There are a few posts saying that minimum level for flagging this quest is not 20. I hate to break it to you, but it is in fact 20. And not a single experience point before can you flag this quest.

It's hella easy (btw lol) btw (lol) lol.

To do this quest you need to go all the way to Bastok then to the mines , N.Gustaberg to finally get to Dangruf Wadi Where you fight Wadi Hares at (I-6) & (G-7) To get the Chocobo Medicine

I talked to Brutus and got the Chocobo on the Loose quest first, too...then I checked all the NPC's around. Got to Silver Tail, the Galkan, and he talks about Brutus and wanting to ride a chocobo. After that, I went back to Brutus and got the quest right away! easy^^

Thanks a lot for this info. I recently got my wife playing, and she just got lvl 20. I escorted her to jeuno for her chocobo quest, and I was quite confused as Brutus gave a different quest! I asked around, and finally decided to look on alla.

As soon as she talked to Silver Tail, the quest immediately flagged.

Thanks again!

Just thought people would like to know that the minimum lvl to start the quest is 18 not 20.

I think you are confusing this with the quest to unlock a subjob. Both are very important quests earlier in the game and are flagged AROUND the same level. but this one's level minimum is definately 20.

Chocobo Wounds and Chocobo on the Loose Quest
# Jan 01 2007 at 9:32 PM Rating: Decent
You get the Chocobo Wounds quest and the Chocobo on the Loose quest from Brutus. Just keep talking to him. You can do both at the same time, of course doing the Cocobo Wounds quest first will make the Chocobo on the Loose quest a lot easier.

Slight clarification
# Oct 10 2006 at 11:06 PM Rating: Decent
The feeding should be done each Vanadiel day. While it is true that each Vanadiel day is roughly 1 earth hour, it is not necessary true that the first 2 feedings should be an hour apart.

For example: suppose that you make your first feeding on Darksday 22:34 time. Then, your next available feeding time is on Firesday, any time. Thus, technically speaking, you can have first 2 feedings only few minutes apart.

Now suppose, after the second feeding you are done for the day and log out. Next time you log in (assuming at least an hour has passed since your last log in) you are good to feed the chocobo. If you plan your log in time close to the end of Vanadiel day, it is possible to have another few min apart feeding times based on the same principle.

I hope this helps a bit.

Chocobo on the Loose
# Sep 12 2006 at 7:08 AM Rating: Decent

Chocobo on the Loose

Now this is not a new extension of the old Chocobo Lisence quest. This is a new quest that allows you to start raising Chocobos and gives you your first egg.

When speaking to Brutus you will be given these two options:
(Choose to Feed)
(Wait for Brutus)

If you select (Choose to Feed) your chocobo will run off and Brutus will suggest La Thiene. Now this is were most of us got stuck because of info.

E4 La Thiene. A set of "Chocobo Tracks" sit next to the mountian. When you click on them a cut scene will begin. The chocobo from Jeuno meets a mysterious wild chocobo in the field. When he sees you he comes back to you and the wild "Bo" takes off.

From here you return to Brutus to bring the Bo back and tell him what happens. From there another Cutscene begins and word or a meeting in Sandoria is brought up.

Next on your things to do list is travel to the Chocobo stables in Southern Sandoria. Inside the stables to the left and up a flight of stairs is an Elf named Hantileon. A meeting will begin and after a bunch of debating you will be given three options. Dispite what you say all your ideas will be shot down. You'll have to select all three.

Go back to Jeuno and talk to Brutus and he will give you a (bit)Chocobo Egg.
Don't Worry....

Don't worry - if you chose to free the chocobo, just talk to Brutus a few more times until he asks you if you want to ride a Chocobo. You will then use the details on this quest and it will tell you to keep trying until the choco trusts you. And YES - it's gausebit grass.

I need help with the quest "chocobo on the loose"
I talked to Brutus in Jeuno Upper and I had the option to free the chocobo or wait for Brutus. I decide to free the chocobo! The chocobo ran to La Theine Plateau and I have no idea where I can find it! Now i have the quest "Chocobo on the loose". Does anyone know where can I find the chocobo?
Later I talked again to Brutus and I got the quest “chocobo’s wounds”

Yes, I think a lvl 20 war can handle a Wadi rabbit. I just got back from a hellish trip in getting those Gausebit grass clumps - and I'm at 21war/10mnk. The rabbits can link, so watch out. Go to Dangruf Wadi...go into an area that has geisers...and ride the geiser up to the next level. You should find the Wadi rabbits there. Be sure you can handle Goblin Tinkerers and Ambushers, because they patrol the area. The place is crawling with them. Also, you have to be patient in getting the grasses...the rabbits don't drop them all the time. If you have a whm friend, take them along. Oh, it helps if you have a map of the Bastokan region...I winged it without a map. I thing you DO NOT want to do.

Wrong. Those are Gyashi Greens sold by the Chocobo Stables merchant. The only places you can get Gausebit Grass are Meriphataud Mountains from Crane Flies and Dangruf Wadi from Wadi Hares.

During the Chocobo's Wounds quest, you cannot turn in Gyashi Greens (or any other type of Greens for that matter). The Chocobo at the stables will only eat Gausebit Grass after the 2'nd attempt (2'nd day).
