Summary

Walkthrough

Dietmund is at G-11, in the house right above the chocobo stables. He will come out when you open the merchant's door and ask you to bring him some night flowers. Then go to the the Upper Jeuno Chocobo Stables and talk to Shallot.

To get the flowers, you need to go to Qufim Isle and look for a path down the cliff at location F-8 (you can't get flower while invis). Wait for nightfall (22:00) and then walk down the path and look for the glowing nightflowers. The flowers is guarded by a Kraken; no worries, have Sneak casted on yourself or use a Silent Oil and you will be perfectly safe. Click on the flower and it will trigger a cut scene. After the cutscene, go talk to the sick kid at his house, then go talk to Brutus at the Chocobo house in Upper Jeuno and you will be flagged to be able to change jobs to Beastmaster. If you go back to where you first spoke to Dietmund, his now healthy son will give you a Beast Whistle and 2100 gil. After you receive the money and whistle you may go to Brutus (Upper Jeuno, G-7 at the Chocobo Stables) and speak to him.

The fact still remains that there are always a good number of very high level fishermen on the cliffs by the kraken.

I just went with my 30 WHM, and while sitting on the path, waiting for nighttime to make my move, a very nice WHM in full AF came by, took me down, and killed the thing with ease, then stayed there with me until the flowers glowed.

My case might have been particularly lucky, but either way, if you're courteous enough, it shouldn't be hard to find some help there.

If THF is your main, use Perfect Dodge and away you go. Also, you can use Flee to get away faster. Either way - that is a method I was told to use and it works with level 1 THF cuz it is 2hr.

Now-a-days, however, someone will most likely have killed or tamed the kraken by the time you get there anyway. That's how it happened for me. I couldn't get a WHM or RDM to sneak me and when I just went before time ran out, I saw a BST leading the kraken away. Free flowers.

Kraken is a level 40 mob, he's not an NM, he's an NNM much like the Rams.

I went with a 2 30 WARs, a 30 WHM and 57 PLD and killed him for fun. But you don't have to kill him, you can use sneak, grab your flower and run.

Can I make a correction?

After the cutscene, instead of going to Brutus at the Chocobo Stables first, you must go back to Dietmund's house. After you get the Bird Whistle and 2100 gil, you can now go to Brutus at the Chocobo Stables. You will recieve Beastmaster after the cutscene with Brutus.

Indeed.

I went to Brutus first. Notting happened. Went to Dietmund to get the cash and Whistle and went back to Brutus and I was flagged for Bst.

I think if you beat up an octopus with hand to hand, your title should be "Popeye".

Wow! Just did this in like 10 minutes. Mostly running. This was easier than the Dark Flag Quest. Mainly did it because needed the gil. Just got some silent oil, ran in and ran out. However the Kraken was there at 20:00, but didn't bother me:)

I finished this quest very easily. I was a level 30 WHM at the time and I cast Sneak on myself prior to following the path down to the flowers. I never saw the Kraken. It was exactly 22:02 on the clock.

After putting off beast for some time i decided to try this as a 40mnk/18war (for voke in case it agroed a low lvl trying to do quest)
I make my way there killing wights and giants and other thigns that kill people in quifm commonly. I get there and see him kinda out of place then i see sumone yell (not call) help lol. apparntly a group of 24s thought he would be good exp >.< . Any way i run down and tell them to call for help they say no its our xp just voke it so it hits you instead! I reply: i cant you ahve it engaged i cannot target it, they say stop playin and voke it thats how power lvling works u ***!! at this time their monk gets agro and goes down, so now very angry they begin yelling F*** U S*** HEAD! VOKE THE KRAKEN U NOOB!!! i again say calll for help or disengage it and i will. Needless tos ay they don't and all die i walk up and kill it then go down and begin waiting for flowers whiel calling for a raise. they get raised and start yelling at me again telling me how noob i am after the whm that raised them hears the story he walks off. they continue yelling to me when i hear HEY NOOBS LEARN TO PLAY THE GAME AND SHUT UP! i turn to see the whm(raiser) running in with a ghost a giant and a wight. then stoneskin, blink, warp ^_^. the mobs turn and destroy the group of 24s and one de lvls. i get my flowers and opt for the ride home scince ide rather not risk a very un likely but possible death. i see the group in town and 2 have de lvled :/

Do i feel bad about it? NO. lol i got bst 2100gil and a whistle and the classic "know-it-all group of noobs" got what they deserved :)

You helped longer than I would and I am one of the nicest WHM you'll ever meet.....rate up! keep up the good work and have fun with BST

Yes the quest is called Save my Son. Thing is, completing this quest also completes a quest given to you at the end of Chocobo's Wounds (chocobo license) given to you by Brutus that never appears in your quest log until complete. This is called Path of the Beastmaster. When he says "You may even be able to be a Beastmaster one day," that's the beginning of Path of the Beastmaster. Odd how that works isn't it?

This was so very easy. Took my lvl1 THF (glad now i didnt level it) and a pair of Bronze Subligar to Qufim and waited just out of the reach of the Kraken for nightfall. Activated Perfect Dodge and got the cutscene. It wore off not long after and the Kraken smacked me for 260 dmg :D

Since i found out the last days in Quifim i'm not going to be happy with my NIN (lvl22)/THF i decided to do the BST quest before leaving Jeuno. Read all info here, changed to THF (lvl31) and sj NIN. Being exited about doing an AJ quest all alone for the first time i did Utsutsemi: Ichi on me just to make sure ^^ Got the quest and went over to F-8 at daytime, then looked where the path is, and went back to a spot above where i was able to look down the cliff and see the kraken there. A 60+ SAM was fishing down there in front of the kraken (I thought "woot, he will help me", but he left around 21:30 lol).
I just stood there and waited for time to go by. When nighttime started, two banshees spawned in sight and i watched them closely, ready to take silent oil if needed. When the clock hit 21:55, i took silent oil, went by the banshees, down the path, right into the kraken (who didnt take notice) and clicked the flowers which were already blooming (was down there around 22:05 i think).
After the cut scene my sneak had not wear off, and i just ran back to Jeuno, sneak lasted until like the last third of the tunnel. Secs later i was in Jeuno and finished the quest.
I LOVED the story btw., real cute how the Choco and Dietmund the beastmaster acted in there ^^
After writing this i'm going to try out my new profession :-)

Sorry if this has already been covered. My experience was a such:

When our Qufim party broke up the other night our SMN wanted to go complete the BST quest. I also needed the flower so I told him I'd go with him. We strolled down there and found the Kraken to be at home. I had utsemei up and enough of a buffer to stand dying so I just ran in there. The Kraken took out one of my shadows as I clicked the flowers to get the cutscene. As soon as I was into the cutscene I lost aggro of the monster. When the cutscene ended I got aggro back but was able to not only successfuly run from the Kraken, I also lead him far enough away for a few other people to get the flowers too :-)

In short, this is an easy way for several people to complete the quest at once without sneak and without buying silent oil. Alternately I guess you could sacrafice a summons or something to keep him busy while you get the cutscene *shrug*.

First get the quest, .. blah blah blah then go to Qufim.
Get thru the first big tunnel with the dancing waeapons etc etc until you see a big giant open path with giants crabs worms and so on. go Left and all the way left.you should be at the sea. then go fowawrd until the path splits up into left and right. go left. keep on going until you see a way down(its on the left side) then wait for 21:00 - 22:00 then check the flowers(itll be real shiny and glowy and cool looking. then go back to the dietmands house, get your rewward, go to Brutus(the guy who gave you the chocobo lisense) and you have finished the quest :)

Note: there may be a octopus in the way(when you get the nightflowers)
Note#2:the quest is considered on your quest dialog, complete once you get the beast whistle and 2.1k gil, but you need to go to the brutus person to get BST

I am a lvl 43 drg/war with pretty good equipment on. I wanted to try bst so i went to do the quest. When i got the kraken he checked easy prey low evasion and defense, boy was that wrong! It started off fine, i hit it for 120 and dragon hit for 40, he hit me for around 50. I was gona win then it used power cross..... BOOM 290 life gone. It got very close then i missed and he got a critical... one dead dragoon and a kraken with 10 life left dancing over my dead body. I do not suggest soloing this until past lvl 45 for a meele job. Theres not much real point anyway with sneak but if you want to solo i think you should wait until past 45.

40drg/19thf at the time -- thinking it would be a tough fight, I killed a bunch of snips, wights, bats in the area till i had near full tp and hp. Took a while, but it happened. Piddled around until night time, then went down to where the kraken spawns. I engage immediately, hit it once, turn around and high jump, wait for it to turn around toward my wyvern. Sneak Attack Double Thrusted it for about 1/4 of it's health and then i con it and it's only a decent.

Yeah, it wasn't exactly a hard fight. Didn't even use food.

1. I have done the chocobo quest.
2. I am level 33.
3. I picked the flowers at night with silent oil.
4. I witnessed the Dietmund-Chocobo cutscene where the Chocobo digs up the flowers.
5. I did not get transported back to Jeuno, I had to warp back
6. I went to Dietmund's home, clicked on the door, and The boy gave me the beastwhisle and ran off.
7. I was awarded 2100 gil, the beast whistle.
8. The quest shows as completed in my quest list.
9. The house now appears empty.
10. I do NOT have a beastmaster selection in my Job Levels nor can I change job to beastmaster in my moogle house.
11. What can I do?

I figued it out. You got to talk to Brutus in the Chocobo stables to get the flag.
