Summary

In order to become a truly great hunter, one must be accepted by mother nature. In order for that to happen, one must gain the fang of a tiger, the fanged king. But it does not sound like any old fang will do...

Walkthrough

Note: You must be level 30 in order to begin this quest.

Speak to Perih Vashai at (K-7) in Windurst Woods. She wants you to watch an old sabertooth die and bring his bones back to her.

Head to the Sauromugue Champaign. Walk up the hill at (L-8) and find the cave located at (L-10). Three sabertooth tigers roam around outside the cave, so it's probably best to ride a chocobo there and bring a form of warp with you.

Examine the old bones and Old Sabertooth will spawn. Wait for him to die naturally, then examine the bones again to receive the key item: Old Tiger's Fang and bring it back to Perih Vashai and you will be flagged to change jobs to Ranger.

THIS WAS SOOOOO EASY!!
# Dec 14 2008 at 8:28 PM Rating: Decent
I was farming Leeches for my Ruby in Buru, and once I had it I figured I would flag this quest while in Windhurst triggering my SMN quest. Had some time before logging off so I set my HP in Windy, picked up a scroll of instant warp, and choco'ed to Saromugue Champaign. Found the bones, waited, picked up the fang, and warped back. Less then 30 minutes. This was by far the quickest additional job I've unlocked (so far DRK, PLD, BRD, and BST)
THIS WAS SOOOOO EASY!!

I Think BST was easier do to not having to go so far.

I came to the area, clicked the bones, the Old Tiger spawned, I killed him and I got nothing. What am I missing here?

EDIT: I clicked the bones to pop it then waited for it to die. Got the old fang, easy peasy.

I just did this quest with my warrior lv 34. Took me 15 min. to get there. Just bring a instant warp scroll and you will be fine
New way?
# Jun 19 2007 at 8:42 PM Rating: Decent
I think Square-Enix changed the way this quest is done. I did it the old fashioned way of waiting for the tiger to die and then touching the bones. But apparently, a new player from LS that uses Xbox 360 sat there for 30 minutes and the old tiger never popped. He then touched the bones and it claimed-popped the tiger.
Ridiculiously easy...

This was just by far the easiest extra job to get, I think the basic jobs are harder, I probably spent more time figuring out what I wanted my main job to be when I first started FFXI then I did getting this job.

I set my HP in Jeuno, took airship to Windy(had my Blm subbed for warp), flagged it. Warped back to Jeuno, grabbed a choco, went to the cave. Waited the five mins or so to let the Tiger die, got my key item. Warped back to Jeuno, took airship to Windy. Got my Ranger, and necklace, warped back to Jeuno, took airship to Basty, and got 6 levels in an hour.

So far it's an extremely fun job though, I didnt think it would be but so far it is. :)

You can't cure the poor old kitty...

Trivial? Yes... but don't go in there expecting to save some lives.

That kitty is gonna die. Plain and simple.

(Or at least, cures have no effect.)
Very simple

I just did this quest since I was in the area for The Holy Crest (Dragoon Flag Quest). I am playing a lvl 36 thf/18 mnk. I took a choco from Jeuno & rode into the back of the cave. There were 3 sabertooths who all read easy prey to me.
Clicked on the bones in the back, watched the old guy die (took screen shots for my LS). Clicked on the bones again. Got the tooth (it's a Key Item btw). Hit flee and ran out then south for Meriphataud Mountains to continue with the Dragoon flag quest. None of the sabertooths aggroed on me. Done in less than 20min. :)
So i got this crazy idea to save some time...
# Aug 12 2006 at 6:46 AM Rating: Decent
What i did was go to windy by way of airship and i did the fame quest that you return the item to the guy recieving 500 gil minus the cost of ride 200gil huh i made 300 gil. i went to talk to Vashi, took the airship back to jueno accepting the fame quest to return the dropped item again. making another 300 gil. hopped a chocobo to Sauromugue Champaign. watched the tiger die and then warped back to windy and finished the quest took a total of like 30 minutes. and i made 600 gil of of riding the airship prety much for free.
If you DO kill it...

If you DO happen to be silly enough to kill the tiger... like I just did. Wait a few minutes and click the bones again and wait for it to die this time. :) You do NOT have to zone to reset the sabertooth.
You dont have to touch it twice

{Ranger} {Quest} {easy prey}
# Apr 16 2006 at 1:06 AM Rating: Decent
This quest was so easy. Me=30War/wateva i had as sub at the time. Anywho, i grabbed choco from windy, ran through sarabuta, tahrongi canyon and metithraud mountins (sp?)then i zoned into saromague champain. so i typed in /p <pos> and kept using that everyso often to check that i was on course. i soon realised i had to go up to near the top of saromague champain then turn around to get to the cave. upon getting there, there were three tigers (remember now, choco=no aggro) so i went to the back of the cave, dismounted and clicked "Tiger Bones." the message thing came up, and so i waited. He finally came and then died in front of me. I clicked "Tiger Bones" again and BAM key item recieved: "Old Tigers tooth." Getting out wasnt even a problem for me one tiger was near entrance to cave so when he turned i ran, the other two were having a staring contest or sumthin so i kept to the left and ran past. Then i just ran all the way back to windy. (And i got a new element thingy from Mountains for smn quest). This was all about 5 mins ago and may i say it: {Ranger} {Quest} {easy prey}
WAR(30).... BLM(18)
# Apr 12 2006 at 11:26 AM Rating: Decent
I hate when people post a message about how a mission was so easy and then they do not give any information about what level they were and what they did to accomplish it. :P

I got this quest done last night on my newest character. His 2 highest levels are WAR-30 and BLM-18. So I started out in Windurst (Windy) last night and I went to start the quest as my WAR-30 (sub MNK). After talking to the girl that gives you the quest, I changed to BLM-18 and set my home point to Windy so that I could warp back after getting the tiger fang.

After that I got on a chocobo and being only level 18; it only gives you so much time until you are kicked off of it. I took every short cut I knew and I just barely got in the cave before I lost my chocobo. Then I walked to the back of the cave where I clicked on the bones and then the old tiger spawned.

I did want to test if a level 18 would get agro'ed by the tiger, but I did not. I clearly walked in circles around him taunting him to test that out and I definately did not get agroed by him... although keep in mind that the tigers outside of the cave will surely tear you to shreds if you go running out there.

After the tiger died, I clicked on the bones again, got the fang and warped out of there. I went back to the girl that gives a quest (still as a BLM 18) and she gave me the RNG necklace and said that I could now become a RNG. Therefore you only really need to be level 30 to unlock the quest and from there on it appears that that does not matter.

this quest is VERY easy if done with a little thought. i did it as 30THF/10WAR. It took me LESS then 20 minutes

head to Perih Vashal's residence, and talk with her. you WONT get a little box asking if you accept the quest, youl automatically get it. she will ask for the "Fang of the king of the beasts".

Set your HP in windy, at the crystal in windurst woods. grab an instant warp scroll, and ask a whm nicely to give you a Teleport-Mea.

Get a chocobo at mea, and make your way through Meriphataud Mtns. (follow the path for the easiest route through). Sauromuge is in the northwest corner.

to get to the cave, keep to your right when you zone into Sauromuge from Meriphataud. eventually youl be able to go south, UP a slope, go up it and stick to the left wall now.

there is 3 little groves on the left, but the last one is where you want to go. there will be THREE tigers there, and will be rated Tough at level 30. They aggro to SIGHT. head allll the way o the back of the cave, and dismount your chocobo.

examine the bones and see "You hear the roar of a distant tiger", and the tiger will instantly pop at the entrance to the cave claimed. DO NOT KILL IT, YOU MUST WAIT FOR IT TO DIE ON ITS OWN. He will wander back and forth for about 4 minutes, then eventually make his way to the area with the bones. THIS TIGER WILL NOT AGGRO.

when he dies, examine the bones again and obtain a Fang. use that handy little instant warp scroll you brought, warp to windy, and talk to Perih Vashal again to obtain the ability to become a ranger and the Ranger's Necklace.

this is an outstanding description. i would like to add that, when i went through it, i was lvl 30thf/15war. the lions registered decent challenge for me. i defeated one of them, they're difficult, but another aggro'd me, and i soon discovered that you can't flee from them. they're just as fast as a thf using flee.

Instant Warp
# Aug 13 2005 at 1:51 PM Rating: Decent
I di this quest easily. I rode my choco through the cave and made the tiger spawn. If u target him u can watch his life go down until he dies. I got the fang and used A scroll of instant waro to get back to Windurst quick. That saved a lot of time.
need help
# Jul 26 2005 at 12:20 AM Rating: Good
I'm having a problem with the quest and I'm hoping someone might have some insight about it.

I spoke with Perih Vashai when I was just starting ages ago and she said stuff about the ranger code and everything. Now, after level 30, I spoke to her again and she said "Have you hearrrd, adventurer? Our world is once again in an uproarrr." etc

Figuring that I already got the quest erlier, I went to the bones and touched them, and... nothing. I just says "There are many tiger bones here..."

I'm going to go back to windy and talk to perih again, and if the problem is solved I'll post and say so. Otherwise, any insight would be greatly appreciated.
