Summary

In order to become a truly great hunter, one must be accepted by mother nature. In order for that to happen, one must gain the fang of a tiger, the fanged king. But it does not sound like any old fang will do...

Walkthrough

Note: You must be level 30 in order to begin this quest.

Speak to Perih Vashai at (K-7) in Windurst Woods. She wants you to watch an old sabertooth die and bring his bones back to her.

Head to the Sauromugue Champaign. Walk up the hill at (L-8) and find the cave located at (L-10). Three sabertooth tigers roam around outside the cave, so it's probably best to ride a chocobo there and bring a form of warp with you.

Examine the old bones and Old Sabertooth will spawn. Wait for him to die naturally, then examine the bones again to receive the key item: Old Tiger's Fang and bring it back to Perih Vashai and you will be flagged to change jobs to Ranger.

If anyone wants to know how this job fairs with others, if you have the best ranged weapon and the best ammo (probably a gun and bullets) you can do the most damage in the game, even more then blm's, warriors, samurai etc. The downside for Rangers is that they always have to buy ammo; bullets are really expensive.
One thing..

I just did the quest and it worked fine except for one thing: If a high level is killing the sabretooth tigers near the Old Sabretooth, it will link with them and attack the player...once this happens you cannot get the quest that time (even if nobody hits old sabretooth) and have to wait for old fang to spawn/die again.

I had spent a fair amount of my MP prior to reaching the cave with the old tiger. Since there was a high level thief killing the tough tigers near by (makes you wonder what's so great that they drop), I figured I'd be relatively safe to heal and recover my MP. Even with "too weak to be worthwhile" aggressive mobs will still attack you if you /heal near by. My partner and I were forced to kill him so he'd stop hitting me. The next one only took a minute or so to spawn.

Regardless of where he dies, just check the bones in the back. This quest was retardedly easy compared to certain others (*cough*samurai/ninja*cough*).

Just FYI, sabertooth tigers drop Black Tiger Fangs, which are very profitable when used towards a certain San d'Oria quest. I don't have enough San d'Oria fame to turn them in yet, so I sell them at the San d'Oria AH; on my server (Midgardsormr) I get about 9k per stack.
Question

I suggest getting a potion of Invis/sneak, as opposed to using a warp scroll. You will need those conquest points later.

yeah.... walking ALL the way back to windurst is really annoying, seriously suggest getting a scroll of insta warp... but anyways, the quest is as easy as it sounds, just run there on your chocobo and hang out in the cave till the Old Sabortooth spawns... im not sure if he agros, but hes VERY weak, so people don't kill him if their hunting for exp

I went there (30th Monk/15th Thief) thinking I might have to 100 Fist the sabertooths, only to see two 40-50ish level Japanese players camping there, killing the spawned sabertooth tigers for me. So I just waited until the Old Sabertooth died and i picked up the fang. I thanked the players and left with a big smile on my face. How easy is that!
So Easy!

This is without a doubt the easiest of all the job flags. Anyone willing to rent a chocobo and use a Warp scroll can do this in about 20 minutes, pretty much risk-free....

I think BST is easier if you have sneak.

I agree, both of them are easy.

But I believe the BST flag quest is easier (if you have sneak) because you start in Jeuno, and the flowers are in Qufim.

Very short walk. ^^

soloing - bring a warp scroll, or flee/perfect dodge

Just finished the quest today, solo as a Mithra 30THF/15WAR. Of course I ignored the advice to take a Warp Scroll... just rode a chocobo in, waited for the Old Sabertooth to die, dismounted, got the key item, and then ran out and aggroed all three tigers. But Flee, followed by Perfect Dodge when the tigers caught up, was barely enough to get me back to the Meriphtaud Mountains zone. (Zoned with 110/499hp left.)

If you don't have some form of Warp/Tele, or can't Flee/Perfect Dodge (and even that is kinda risky), then I don't see how you could survive at L30 versus three tough-con fast-moving tigers.

It's possible to avoid them. I did. No Sneak/Deo/Invisible, either. Just plain old Metal Gear Solid style. Though I probably was lucky.

... Of course, I then completely ignored the Yagudo and dino thingies ahead of me and died on the way to Jeuno anyway. Figures.
is it good ?

Took less than 5 minutes for him to die for me from 3/4's HP. It's not a long time.

2nd easiest quest to BST Quest.

I did the quest solo by myself and never got touched, everyone is right so far on where the quest is done, in teh campaign area outside of jueno(windurst side). If you look at a map you will see a small piece of land sticking out near the bottom south east side(it will be on the east side itself) it is in the very corner, there you will go off hte map and into a cave.

Do not get off your chocobo until you see the old sabertooth die(there are bones already there these aren't hte ones you want) once the old one dies you will go to hte back of the cave where there are bones lying on the ground. From here you will dismount your chocobo and examine the old fangs(or whatever it is called) then you will obtain the key item. Simply warp back to windurst (if you aren't a citizen of windurst have 1500 conquest points handy).

Go back to L-7(windurst walls I believe, has souther AH there) talk to the person who gave you the quest, she will then give you the rangers necklace and you will obtain the ranger job at mog house.

Very simple to solo just don't get off the chocobo until the old sabertooth dies naturally.
