The spell also drops of high lvl skeleton mages in Gustav Tunnel and King Ranperre's Tomb. The fact that there are MNK PT's clearing KRT like 24/7 makes this spell the easiest and cheapest to get.

worth ?

Pro: this spell is definitely devastating for lvl50(ish). In xp pt it can finish off a mob at 50% HP. In solo or BCNM's it is a very nice opener if your target doesn't attack unless you hit it first.

*MP cost: You can regenerate MP quite fast as blm50+ and the dmg isn't bad compared to the MP spent, BUT it still eats around 50% of the max MP of a BLM50. This >can< take your ability to sub in healing, deal with adds (sleep) or escape (125MP. . .). Also you will like the resists, tossing 300MP for 200dmg is fun (though this extends to all spells).

*HATE: Some ppl like to randomly cast it midfight. . . .no matter wether MB or random spell, the unresisted dmg of this spell is more then any tank lvl50 can handle with ease. This > can < be a big problem resulting in a dead blm (who cares) or a dead healer (dmg-> cure-> healer tank = big problem)

*CAST TIME: Ancient Magic spells have a cast time that only compares to raise spells or escape. Hitting the MB requires quite a bit of timing and reliable ppl. Apart from hitting a mob as MB or non-MB without killing being not in the BLM's favour. . . if your pt happens to dish out some impressive dmg you might find yourself tossing 300MP to kill a mob with 50HP. . .Also leaves you unable to toss a quick cure or stun something nasty to save some butts.

Ancient magic does work for some pt's, totaly fu'cks up other pt's and doesnt change anything in whatever pt is left. In generell for XP and endgame use, the Ancient Spells are toys for your fun. -ga2 and tier 3 spells are easier to time and more reliable and less risky, tier4 and -ga3 stronger.AM is only a MUST HAVE for BLM70 Maat, some BCNMs/ENMs and some PM's (must as in "makes it really better").

just shy of 1000. With my rdm main seeing numbers like this makes me very happy that i chose to bring up blm.

freeze is worth the mp, with a dark staff i dov=nr even have down time, i just heal when pulling and the first min of fight (to let the pld get hate) the i start with poison 2 and bio2 theb nule a litte(not much) then Mb and its dead. i do like 1120 with freeze, mb with blizzarga 2 is not worth it and it is not safe.

this is my opinon.
freeze vs. blizzard II
# Mar 25 2005 at 8:51 PM Rating: Decent
here are the facts.

Freeze is 307mp 1200dmg average for me on MB.
Blizzard II is 77mp @ 270 damage for me on MB.

so to equal the damage that one freeze costs it would take over 4 blizzard II's. 4 of those cost 308mp. so it is basically the same.... if you can get four skillchains off in a party. and my stone 3 spell does more than that. Freeze is better. i dont know any Black Mages that have a problem getting mp back after a MB, provided that there is a rdm in the party.

hope this helps resolve this old issue...

You only do 280 with a Blizzard II MB? I do well over 350 consistently. But I do agree, at 50, Freeze is quite useful if your party is competent.

#REDACTED, Posted: Mar 24 2005 at 7:53 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) With 720 MP, Lv52 BLM/SMN I can say proudly...I love Freeze! Freeze = great manaburning. But when in a party, I don't like to burst with it A LOT. I do burst, but not all the time. I usually get arrogant people that want to start chain before I start casting (which would be missing the burst) and sometimes my Poison II doesn't stick, still need to level enfeebling, so on occasion that costs 100-200 MP, and I never like being left with under 300 (in case of an emergency)

I've seen people argue over this for so long. I was in a party for several hours where we did Freeze MBs, and one where we didn't. Here's my rulings:

Robber Crabs were our targets. Honestly, yes, the fights without a burst took *so* much longer then the ones without it. We did a .. umm.. Vorpal Scythe >> SATAVB >> Distortion >> Freeze chain, and could take a crab from just over half life to 0 95% of the time (sometime we had abit left over, PLD covered me and we did well) I did a whole set of enfeeblings before each chain (Blind, Frost, Bio II, Poison II, Paralyze, and Slow) and one Blizzard II before either I had just enough for a burst (thanks to conserve MP) or healed for just abit before the burst. I immediately healed as soon as the burst went off and the thief went to pull. By the time we got another one, I had mre then enough to burst. And it conserve MP saved me some, I had enough to do a full set of enfeebling again.

When we didn't the fight took alot more time, honestly. We lost the chance at more crabs. I dunno.

That's my say. I think the freeze bursts did *fine*. I dont know why people complain its such an MP waster! Either I used all my MP throwing spells at it over and over, or we took half as much time and I did one burst. *shrug*

(Oh - for any BLM with a want to know here is my macro )

/equip Body "Com.Cst. Cloak +2" (this is most likely spelt wrong><)
/equip Main "Ice Staff"
/p Starting {Freeze} {Burst}! Wait for my mark!<call4>
/ma "Freeze" <bt>
/wait 5
/p Use first {Weapon Skill} now! <call>

the first weapon skill had a /p announcement, /wait 1, then the vorpal scythe. thief immediately did SATA as soon as the weapon skill hit. Burst rarely rarely missed the skillchain and if it did, it was usually the 2 people with weapon skills off'ing the time. ^^

Hope this helps!

Note: I also used a dark staff and seer's tunic while healing for that serious MP boost. Party only got better with the rdm/brd doing refresh and ballad 1 on me later in the night! (Always had full MP by the end of that with him...such a good combo!!)

RE: Freeze

It's true, it is a good combo, but once you have access to Blizzaga II, you can inflict quite a lot of damage for much less mp then Freeze. Of course, freeze is a good choice when you don't have blizzaga II, and freeze will most likely inflict more (150-300) on a MB then a blizzaga II MB, but @ lvl 61, (current lvl) a Blizzage hits on average, 850 damage for the properly equiped blm, and us melees can pretty much use the skillchain whenever since the cast time isn't so long.

We just get the mob down to about 75% hp left, and the skillchain kills it off, most of the time. This is on Velociraptors, pugils, and crabs.

Well, BLizzaga is only an option in a clear and safe camp, and when there is no link to sleep.

I look at -aga's as nice to use when I can, but not an option to build a SC around.
# Feb 10 2005 at 1:46 AM Rating: Decent
I have seen many many people say that Freeze is a waste of mp. It is, but then it isn't. Freeze is less MP effecient than Bliz2 or Thunder2(main nukes around level 50 when you get freeze), however, freeze does get the battle with quickly. Also, a HUGE point I think many miss is you get hate when the spell hits, not when you start casting. This means if your freeze MB is going to kill the mob when it has half of its life left, you are not gaining hate while casting it. This can help a lot with NIN tanks that can't hold hate as well as some other tanks(not saying NINs are bad, just poorly played NINs are worse than poorly played PLDs).

Also, a Freeze MB can be very useful when you are competing for mobs, maybe an area has many people camping it, if you freeze MB and end the battle quickly, you will have time to rest up the wated mp while waiting on a pop, and your puller can get out there faster to find another pop. If you are at a camp with very little competeion, use other nukes to get the most damage for your mp, so the party has less downtime(although, I regularly mb freeze and it is almost never me the party is waiting on for mp, remember 1 level after freeze you get dark staff)
307 MP...ouch
# Jan 03 2005 at 8:03 PM Rating: Decent
Is this worth the MP during xp fighting? I'll get it anyway for Maat and west ronfaure fun, but I'd like to know if 800+ damage is really worth the downtime.

I've been in refresh-heavy parties, with taru blm/smn, where casting that spell worked. They also did their usual enfeebles, and a little nuking, but half the fight was spent resting. If you don't have those resources at hand, figure on casting only AM for MB, and resting. It usually isn't worth the downtime, except at the lower levels where you exp in boyhada tree.

/p Start [Skillchain] Now!!!!

Yes, something similar to that macro can be used in all AM/high tier elementals spells. Tailor the wait time to the casting time, and be sure to allow for some leeway. Skillchain should take 5-8 seconds, and you get about 3 or 4 seconds to finish casting your spell after the SC animation goes away.

Its also a good idea to include a short call, on both warnings, in case for some reason (and it happens often) your <call> doesn't go off 'cause of other sfx. Melee who are seasoned skillchainers (sam, nin, thf, rng, etc) will notice the text right away and probably not depend on the <call>.

i was blabbering on about the usefulness of ancient magic in the flare thread- you should check it out. Use -ga spells instead of AM if you have the room. its much more efficient most of the time.

/wait 5
/p (Ready to begin skillchain!)

If it works, you can MB for quite a bit.

I've been using 3-4 myself. I haven't MB'd with it since I got my Ice Staff, so things should be interesting =P.

It's really party-dependant, but I find on average 5 seconds after I start casting freeze, the first weapon skill should go off.

For all those black mages coming up on Freeze... you won't be disappointed. The first time I casted it, I did 854 damage to Seeker Bats. Depending on the mob, it'll do anywhere from 700 on up to 850 damage... it does about 835 on Exorays too ^^ (Found out helping with Genkai 1)

EDIT: Just wanted to add some more magic burst info....

With an Ice Staff on Robber Crabs, I was doing 1126 damage. To make things better, it became Ice Day... so Ice Staff + Ice Day = 1250 damage. We were taking down Robber Crabs extremely fast, and no mana problems with a RDM's refresh and strong dark magic for good aspirs.

I read thru all posts for this topic, one person said:

"Freeze - Start Skill Chain in 2 SECS!! <call#>" Once you start casting, the 1st TP hitter should wait about 2 secs to release TP."

and the other person said:

/ma Freeze
/wait 11
/p Renkei Star!<call3>

SO, what should be the proper delay value for /wait that I need to put in my macro?? Thank you

at 54, capped elemental, with an ice staff, and closer to 100 INT, and no Mouldavite, my personal best is in the area of MB 1200 damage.
When we do it though, its prety consistant, but the odd resist will be in the 1000 area.
Its all good.

Most of the time for me this spell is never resisted and gives me very little hate. A couple of times I cast it right in the middle of a fight, it did 800+ damage and the monster didnt even notice me. My first 3 MB all did 1007 damage at lvl 50. I duno how much damage Flare does but I would say that Freeze is up there, coming close to being the highest damage spell in the game. Quake because its earth does crap damage and Tornado is usualy around 700 damage. Burst does alot so I'm not going to count that out. Over all its an awsom spell.

don't underestimate the power of earth-based spells. use them on the right mobs and they're as or more effective as ice/fire/thunder spells. only reason earth-based spells seem nerfed is because we don't often exp on mobs weak vs stone.

personal favorite = burst >XD

I just started to use FREEZE in SC/MB's now, and man... now I know how powerful the BLM is!!! MB = 950

How to use ancient spells in battle:

1st- ONLY! cast when you know FREEZE will kill (or almost kill mob) for the MB. You should cast when the mob's HP is about half way down. If you SC & MB in the beginning you're gonna get all the hate and if you dont have a PLD to stand behind (cover), you're skrewed. =\

Get your ELEMENTAL SEAL ready or if it's not ready cast SHOCK for -MND. This ensures more chance of nonresistance to magic on the mob.

2nd- YOU will be the STARTER of the SC (make a macro for it), once the mob's HP is close to half gone, ask party's TP. If they're all at +100% postition yourself behind the PLD then use ELEMENTAL SEAL or SHOCK, then cast FREEZE using a macro that says something like "Freeze - Start Skill Chain in 2 SECS!! <call#>" Once you start casting, the 1st TP hitter should wait about 2 secs to release TP, then the 2nd TP hitter will go, DISTORTION will be made, then hopefully you'll land the MB on time for mega hp pts!!! I've maxed at 956 hit pts =) lvl 50

3rd- REMEMBER to stand behind the PLD if you have one in the PT, if your MB doesnt kill the mob, you will get all the hate! So, by standing behind the PLD and him using COVER when casting FREEZE the PLD will protect you from unwanted blows. Be right behind the TANK!!!!

4th- NOW you see the real power of a BLM!!!

freeze = 840 damage
freeze + Ice staff = 885
freeze + ice staff + MB = 1080

this is as 51 blm with 163 elemental skill, 50 +22 int.

have /equip main "Ice staff" as part of your macro for this spell.

also, the MB for Blizzard II should be over 300. i do about 310 with my ice staff on (also macro'd)

Hard to MB unles you set it up as a macro with your tanks. It takes almost 18 seconds to cast. So make a macro something along the lines of.

/ma Freeze
/wait 11
/p Renkei Star!<call3>

You're tanks will have to renkei at the end of your macro. I've MBd for 1020dmg with this spell though. Usually does high 700s for dmg without MB.
