shock is the way to go. and while i realize that most of this seems like heresay, i recommend you test it for yourself. you will find that lowering your <t>'s int does little to resist your spells. and if you think about it whm's have high mind traits. they also have the job trait magic def bonus. blm as you may now have high int attributes, and thusly magic att bonus. wish i had auto-translate right now...

According to the Spring 2004 Strategy Guide, the Prime Element table on page 30, shows the "Rock, Paper, Scissors" effect of the elements in Final Fantasy.

I think this chart clears up the whole "Damage Over Time" (DoT) spell controversy.
Also my experience in watching the Battle Spam in parties seems to show the same flow of elements.

These Spells are as follows;
DIA (DEF down effect)
BIO (ATK down effect)
BURN (INT down effect)
FROST (AGI down effect)
CHOKE (VIT down effect)
RASP (DEX down effect)
SHOCK (MND down effect)
DROWN (STR down eefect)

Charts reads as follows;

Light Cancels Dark
Dark Cancels Light

Fire Cancels Ice
Ice Cancels Wind
Wind Cancels Earth
Earth Cancels Thunder
Thunder Cancels Water
Water Cancels Fire

so if we replace the Element in the chart with a DoT spell;

DIA Cancels BIO
BIO Cancels DIA

BURN Cancels FROST
FROST Cancels CHOKE
CHOKE Cancels RASP
RASP Cancels SHOCK
SHOCK Cancels DROWN
DROWN Cancels BURN

According to the chart the only 2 spells that can cancel each other are DIA (Light) & BIO (Dark)(although some believe Dia & Bio are based on which ever spell is the higher level stronger one cancels the other & there is validity to that claim)
All others follow the "Rock, Paper, Scissors" Rule (Frost Cannot cancel Burn, Choke Cannot cancel Frost, etc.)

So I hope this helps clear up some things. Please don't rebutt this post with more hearsay & unconfirmed theories. I got this all out of the game rules, if you think its wrong or not entirely correct, test it for yourself. All I know is that when a fellow BLM casts BURN, my FROST "Has no effect" which according to chart, follows the game's logic.

Happy Nuking.

I have a question:

Do shock/choke/burn/frost/rasp/drown stack with all of the drk's ABS spells?
Shock vs Burn

I'm confused does casting burn or shock allow your spells not to be resisted as much or allow you to do more dmg? When i'm casting burn it seems like my spells arnt being resisted nearly as much. but when i cast shock i dont notice anything. and the posts on the burn forum say that burn does lower the chance of mobs resisting your spells. but all these posts say otherwise. i'm really confused...
This is why this spell is awesome. . .

To anyone who tells you otherwise. . .

Shock is crucial. Since it decreases MND, it will decrease the chances of your nukes getting partially or fully resisted.

This becomes very important when you're dropping >100 MP for a tier 3 nuke in a magic burst. If the mob's MND isn't debuffed, your burst can go off for 300 dmg instead of 650...even worse if you're casting ancient magic and you get 500 dmg instead of 1250.

It is important, as a BLM to know how the elemental debuffs work. Some stack, some don't:
Shock/Choke/Burn stack. (Magic-Friendly)
Frost/Rasp/Drown stack. (Melee-Friendly)
For the most part, until you understand which elements are strong to which (helpful to know. read a BLM guide in the forums) don't mix Magic and Melee friendly stuff, as it will cancel out. (Like bio and dia. And no, they don't stack either. :D hehe)

Other comments:
1. Not worth casting on easy prey mobs. Your Elemental Magic skill (assuming it is capped) will dominate the mob's resistance easily, for the most part.
2. Definitely toss this one on before a skillchain! Your MB must go unresisted.
3. Don't try to burst an elemental debuff. You will just be dissapointed. They don't do damage. That's not the point. ^^
4. Sometimes Melees like to fire off their weaponskills before shock and burn are up on the mob. This is not good for your burst. Communication is crucial. When you see the last chainer get up to 85% tp, toss up your debuffs, and put something in your macro that says so! This way, when they see you start your debuff macro for skillchains, they'll understand what you're doing.
/p (Skillchain Debuff Set) Shock >> Burn >> <bt> ^^
/ma "Shock" <bt>
/wait 6
/ma "Burn" <bt>
/wait 2
/panic motion

Sorry this post went on for a long time. I hope that this info is helpful to the people who are sorry they bought this spell. :D

PS: if your melees are missing a lot, try tossing up Frost to drop the mob's evasion via dropping its AGI. ^^
PPS: put up shock and burn ASAP as the first thing you cast if your RDM's debuffs are getting resisted every time. . .you'll like the results, and so will the RDM.

It seems this spell is rather useful against tougher mobs - decreasing their MND means that nukes have less chance of being resisted for half-damage, as well as better odds of debuffs sticking.

Easy and Decent Challenge mobs don't resist spells often in the first place, so decreasing their MND isn't as useful.

Just to inform all of you making this post... Shock is THE only useful (for BLMs) debuff spell of the frost/choke/shock line of spells. This is simply because of the fact that it lowers the MND of the target. Sure it may do Damage over Time, but that damage is insignificant to the increased damage that your spells will do to VT/IT mobs since they dont get resisted as often. Since MND contributes to both healing magic and your magic defense, lowering an enemies MND will make your offensive magic spells more effective, and decreases the chance that they will get resisted (or do half of the damage they should be doing). So my point is... DONT SKIP THIS SPELL!!! ALL blms should have this spell and use it at the start of a fight against T/VT/IT mobs. hope this clears up some stuff that i was seeing on the board

Shock vs Burn

Some people have mentioned that debuffing INT helps against blm spells instead of MND which is resist for whm spells. I have always believed that MND was magic resist for every spell so I have always used Shock as a debuff in groups.

Is there any truth to the theory that INT is resist for certain spells and MND for others? It would certainly make Burn more useful.

INT. lowers the damage BLM spells do. When INT is lowered, the spells don't do as much damage. So, if you lower a mob's INT and it cats a BLM spell, it will not hurt you as much as it should.

When I do shock it does +25hp damage and keeps on doing damage each turn for 2-3hp.

i've used it today, it does do DoT (Damage over time) and my spells seem to do a little more damage with it on. as mind is the defence against offensive magic.

i am dissapointed though that we dont get real lightening spell untill much later, though i belive since it is technicly a lightening spell you can chain it with skill chains of electra stuff. not sure if it will do any damage though, meh i'd probably say save your money for blizzard and warp.

Shock appears to do more dmg than poison, slightly less than bio, and doesn't last as long as bio either.

As far as the MND down goes, I can't really tell that much of a difference...

We get thunder at lvl 21... thats only 4 lvls later than shock. I can wait, especially since we get blizzard at 17 as well.

Does this spell do damage?

Shock doesn't appear to actually do any damage... ??
Anybody else use this spell? Also, when you use it, does it give the target negative MND stat effect?

#Anonymous, Posted: Jan 29 2004 at 8:50 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I think this spell sucks. At a 30 mp casting cost, you'd be much better off using a more damaging spell. The initial damage is weak as is the DoT. I can't tell how much MND is debuffed, but there was nothing noticible. At 3k for the scroll and the high casting cost, this spell should stay in the AH.

MND down reduces the chances that an offensive spell will be resisted. EP mobs will be unlikely to resist a BLM frying it with a capped elemental skill.

You might want to use this spell prior to nukes on party mobs. You will find your nukes far less resisted by T, VT, and IT exp party mobs. This spell is even better when used in conjunction with other mages, as this effect will benefit all offensive magic spells.
