According to the Spring 2004 Strategy Guide, the Prime Element table on page 30, shows the "Rock, Paper, Scissors" effect of the elements in Final Fantasy.

I think this chart clears up the whole "Damage Over Time" (DoT) spell controversy.
Also my experience in watching the Battle Spam in parties seems to show the same flow of elements.

These Spells are as follows;
DIA (DEF down effect)
BIO (ATK down effect)
BURN (INT down effect)
FROST (AGI down effect)
CHOKE (VIT down effect)
RASP (DEX down effect)
SHOCK (MND down effect)
DROWN (STR down eefect)

Charts reads as follows;

Light Cancels Dark
Dark Cancels Light

Fire Cancels Ice
Ice Cancels Wind
Wind Cancels Earth
Earth Cancels Thunder
Thunder Cancels Water
Water Cancels Fire

so if we replace the Element in the chart with a DoT spell;

DIA Cancels BIO
BIO Cancels DIA

BURN Cancels FROST
FROST Cancels CHOKE
CHOKE Cancels RASP
RASP Cancels SHOCK
SHOCK Cancels DROWN
DROWN Cancels BURN

According to the chart the only 2 spells that can cancel each other are DIA (Light) & BIO (Dark)
All others follow the "Rock, Paper, Scissors" Rule (Frost Cannot cancel Burn, Choke Cannot cancel Frost, etc.) (although some believe Dia & Bio are based on which ever spell is the higher level stronger one cancels the other & there is validity to that claim)

So I hope this helps clear up some things. Please don't rebutt this post with more hearsay & unconfirmed theories. I got this all out of the game rules, if you think its wrong or not entirely correct, test it for yourself. All I know is that when a fellow BLM casts BURN, my FROST "Has no effect" which according to chart, follows the game's logic.

Happy Nuking.

This is absolutely correct and can be easily tested.

Yes, I have tested this myself. With regard to Dia and Bio, you are simply wrong.

Testing on a Dhalmel which checks as high defence naturally, but only just so dia takes it down to normal defence:

Cast Dia -> No HD so dia effect is active
Cast Bio -> HD so dia effect has been removed
Cast Dia -> HD so dia had no effect
Cast Dia II -> No HD so dia is active
Cast Bio -> No HD so dia was not removed
Cast Bio II -> HD so dia was removed
Cast Dia II -> HD so dia had no effect

I've repeated this several times, and it is always consistent.

Thus, Bio overwrites and blocks Dia.
Dia II overwrites and blocks Bio.
Bio II overwrites and blocks Dia II.

This spells DoT is based on dark skill, and the initial damage is about 50 when you first get it.

Attack is lowered by 10%

If my LS is right on this, I think it now stacks with Dia
Bio 2

Dia and Bio are the smae spells .... only differences I see is this:

1) Bio is Dark element, Dia is Light
2) Bio drops Atk, Dia drops Def
3) Bio cancels Dia out.

You Choose....

patch changes

the 9/13 patch made this a lot stronger. the DOT is determined by your Dark magic skill now. I just tested this and killed a goblin smithy with 2 castings of bio II. looks like it drains 15-20 hp per tick with 240-ish dark skill.

MP costs was also reduced... 36 or so...? i forget

Dia II is preferred over Bio II because Dia II decreases the MOB's defense by 10%, allowing the melee to deal more damage. Also, Dia II is less expensive (in terms of MP cost) than Bio II. Decreasing attack does not help much because it does not speed up the killing of the MOB. You can argue that it saves MP, but I'll just say that Dia II saves MP also, because the faster you kill a MOB, the more MP the main healer can save.

I also prefer Dia over Bio in most cases, but I wonder if Bio (or Bio II) would be better against mobs with killer special attacks such as spiders with sickle slash, and bats with jetstream, since neither mob has that great a defense to start with.

At least, I think I'm going to start asking our RDM if she'll use Bio II on certain mobs since I can use Acid Bolts to lower defense. I'm assuming this would work, but correct me if I'm wrong since I believe it is understood that Bio overwrites Dia but I doubt it would overwrite an Acid Bolt affect.

This may be true in almost all cases except MOBs that are weak to Dark elements. A perfect example would be Crawlers, and since many of us start XPing in the Crawler's Nest at level 35-36 (when this spell is available to BLM and RDM), it would seem that Bio 2 would be more preferable than Dia 2 in this case. Seems like a necessary spell for BLMs and RDMs as soon as they get it.

Drops attack by 10%, does intial damage of 50+ (with decent dark skill) unknown how much damage over time it does.
what it does
# Mar 12 2004 at 12:31 AM Rating: Decent
I'm told it does ~ 60 dammage when cast, lowers attack by 10 %, and deals 2 dammage a tick

Anyone have any idea exactly how much damage this spell does over time and how much it drops ATK?
