Maybe you should actually read his post. He was talking about a general situation.
"If the mages in the party are doing their jobs, there should be no need to cast Bio."

According to the Spring 2004 Strategy Guide, the Prime Element table on page 30, shows the "Rock, Paper, Scissors" effect of the elements in Final Fantasy.

I think this chart clears up the whole "Damage Over Time" (DoT) spell controversy.
Also my experience in watching the Battle Spam in parties seems to show the same flow of elements.

These Spells are as follows;
DIA (DEF down effect)
BIO (ATK down effect)
BURN (INT down effect)
FROST (AGI down effect)
CHOKE (VIT down effect)
RASP (DEX down effect)
SHOCK (MND down effect)
DROWN (STR down eefect)

Charts reads as follows;

Light Cancels Dark
Dark Cancels Light

Fire Cancels Ice
Ice Cancels Wind
Wind Cancels Earth
Earth Cancels Thunder
Thunder Cancels Water
Water Cancels Fire

so if we replace the Element in the chart with a DoT spell;

DIA Cancels BIO
BIO Cancels DIA

BURN Cancels FROST
FROST Cancels CHOKE
CHOKE Cancels RASP
RASP Cancels SHOCK
SHOCK Cancels DROWN
DROWN Cancels BURN

According to the chart the only 2 spells that can cancel each other are DIA (Light) & BIO (Dark)
All others follow the "Rock, Paper, Scissors" Rule (Frost Cannot cancel Burn, Choke Cannot cancel Frost, etc.) (although some believe Dia & Bio are based on which ever spell is the higher level stronger one cancels the other & there is validity to that claim)

So I hope this helps clear up some things. Please don't rebutt this post with more hearsay & unconfirmed theories. I got this all out of the game rules, if you think its wrong or not entirely correct, test it for yourself. All I know is that when a fellow BLM casts BURN, my FROST "Has no effect" which according to chart, follows the game's logic.

Happy Nuking.

The parent post is wrong on the effect of dia and bio.

In short:

Bio II > Dia II > Bio > Dia

See my post on the Bio II page for details.

Read carefully, before you say I'm wrong about Dia Vs Bio

Now this is just my opinion, but as a 71 RDM, i don't like Bio. Sure it takes off a slight amount of damage, but i think that it is more important to weaken an enemies defense rather than its attacks. If the mages are doing their jobs with the Enfeebs, things shouldn't hit incredibly often, and if a tank is doing their job nothing you XP off of should be dealing life-threatening damage. (That is to say, if they are being cured well by mages). Bottom line is i prefer Dia over Bio, and if you're in my party and you want to bio, do it to skill-up, and realize that when i see it, i'm gonna Dia right over it ^^. If anybody has a good argument for Bio over Dia, let me know. I'm open to discussion ^^.

# Jun 20 2005 at 7:32 PM Rating: Decent
they dont "Cancel" just overwrite.
i got a better question though. how much HP doees Dia II reduce? i think 4HP/3sec.
worth the mp?
# Jul 30 2004 at 1:11 AM Rating: Default
im only a 28 so ill be getting this soon and it costs 59 mp to cast which seems like a lot since i only have about 250 right now as a mithra. so im just wondering if it lowers defence that much more than just a regular dia spell to be worth the downtime

I've heard that this particular spell lowers 25% of the enemies defense. Whether this is true or not, I do not know, I haven't personally done any tests, but it wouldn't surprise me considering things a few lvls above that have monsterous defense to begin with (robber crabs pop up to mind) so the ratio between dia and snippers'def and dia II and robber crabs' def should come out to be about the same.

Something interesting about your test, I am sure most people didn't notice:

It appears as though dia doesn't overwrite bio. In your test when you did bio then dia... u didn't get the message dia wears off. You only got bio wears off.

It should just be common sense that these two spells wouldn't stack. Why? Because Dia is a white magic light spell, and Bio is black magic darkness spell, naturally the two would cancel each other out.

I was in the dunes on my lvl 30RDM/15BLM, a leecher cast dia on my, I put it to sleep, and then a gambler tried bio, and I got the immediate xp loss of 0... but the spell didn't stay on me, instead dia did.

Thanks for the actual first visual proof of a test. Hopefully, more people will bring forth their own experiments and present the data. It has always been my opinion that they do not stack and examining your data only strengthens that belief. Great job! Smiley: smile

Do the two 'Dia' spells stack?

Can anyone confirm this? I'm about to get it and I'm just curious if they stack (if it's ever necessary)

Thanks.

No, Bio and Dia do not stack, but if you want to have almost the same effect you can stack Dia and Poison.

I heard someone in one of the other threads say that Bio and Dia do indeed stack... his proof was that if you cast both on a given mob, that you can then later see each of the individually expire via the status update.... but having the spell active on the mob doesn't necessarily mean it's having an effect... I guess.. :) was that clear?

Probably what happened is that when the second of the two spells was cast, the moment it landed the previous spell effect wore off to make way for the new one. In all of my experiences, any form of Bio and Dia do not stack. However, Dia and Poison do.

No, in my experience it does not stack. Bio overwrites Dia, Dia II overwrites Bio, Bio II overwrites Dia II. So I believe it's safe to assume that Dia II overwrites Dia.
A Must Have

This spell *must* be acquired by any aspiring Red Mage - it will make battles turn from hopeless or nearly impossible into a much more manageable altercation.

Pass this up at your own, and your parties, peril.

Anyone know where this is sold? Can it be found in Jeuno? Windhurst? My Windhurst, Jeuno and Sn'Doria fames are good... Seblina is kind of low so even if it's sold there I'd prefer getting it for cheaper at a town I've got good fame in
Seems to really be worth it.
# Jan 14 2004 at 9:42 AM Rating: Good
I've heard all the arguments that DiaII isn't worth the MP because it's just "10 more -DEF than Dia I", so I passed it up and stuck with Dia1 all the way to 40. Well, the other night my group as fighting very high DEF mobs in Gustav Tunnel, and try as we might they were not taking much dmg. I would end each fight down 80% of my MP (out of 415).

Then the RDM starts casting Dia2 on the mobs and WHAT a difference. I began to end fights only 20% down. The amount of dmg our melee were dishing out almost tripled.

So I say to all ye WHM/RDM, get this spell and start using it! See if you can notice big differences and report back!

10 defense is a huge difference! Just think how much more you'd pay for an armor with 25 defense instead of 15 defense. This game is all about differences. If your offense and defense is 5 points below your opponent (say fighting a tough) you're a goner, even if it's 95 vs 90. Similarly, Bio II + Dia II can transform a certain death into an easy fight.

umm.. how exactly would someone know that this takes only 10 more defense away..

Finding out how much is easy, just find a mob that throughs it on ya. As to the Post ur replying to, I have both, I only use Dia 2 in special situations. ea ITs that were a little to IT and for speacial fights. Othen then that i usually stick to Dia 1. If the partyy is that insistant the white mage can through it since there MP comes back faster.
how we know Dia II takes 10 from monster defense?

ok, i figured out the answer to my question. if anyone is interested:

i didn't understand how ppl found out Dia II's effect. of course! if a mob casts Dia II on you, you can just check your own Defense to see how much it was affected.

only i'm not sure if it's -10 points or -10 percent def. this thread says -10, but Ririkai's spell spreadsheet lists it at -10%.

you can buy this at the federal magic reserve every so often. does it really make a difference? i cant really tell. however, since RDM gets it first, and you are most likely going to be in th citadel or crawlers nest, it is worth picking up.
